  • Buhari commiserates with Gusau over wife’s death

    President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with former Minister of Defence, Gen. Aliyu Gusau (rtd), on the death of his wife, Hajiya Binta.

    In a condolence message by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja yesterday, Buhari said the death of Hajiya Binta came to him “as a great shock.”

    The President said: “A wife occupies an important place in a man’s life, a bond so strong that we treat our wives like our own flesh and blood.

    “My heart goes out to Gen. Gusau at this emotionally trying moment.

    “Death is inevitable and we are powerless against the will of God. No tears can wipe away our grief, the best tribute to the dead is to pray for them.’’

    The President prayed Allah to comfort the retired army general and members of his family and grant them the fortitude to bear this great loss.

    “May the soul of Hajiya Binta rest in peace, May Allah reward her good deeds with al- Jannah, amen,” he said.

     

  • Man sues board for wife’s death

    Mr James Ojogbane and family has sued the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) before an FCT High Court, Jabi for allegedly causing the death of his wife, Mrs Mary James, on September 1, 2015.

    Join in the suit by Ojogbane, a retired Police officer, were  Isah Umar, Ibrahim Ahmed, both workers of the AEPB, and Chima Emokah, a neighbour.

    The plaintiff had told the court through his lawyer, Mr Emmanuel Onoja, that the push on his wife by the environmental staff led to her death.

    According to Onoja, Emokah lodged a complaint at the AEPB against Ojogbane and family, saying their goat was disturbing them.

    Onoja said Emokah particularly complained of his car park, which he said the goat usually defecated on.

    He said the AEPB staff began  investigations on the premises following the report.

    According to Onoja, one of the AEPB task force officials pushed the deceased under the guise of enforcing environmental law in the FCT.

    Onoja said the push on the woman made her to fall and she was immediately rushed to the Wuse General Hospital where she died same day.

    However, AEPB counsel, Mr Azih Collins, told the court that an earlier notice was issued to the Ojogbane family to remove the goat from the premises.

    Collins said the notice was given to the family on August 25, 2015, after the AEPB taskf orce carried out investigation on the premises.

  • Corporal held for wife’s death

    A police corporal Yinka Oloko of the Lagos State Command is being held for the death of his wife.

    He is being detained at the Ikeja Police Division for alleged taking home his service pistol which accidentally discharged and killed his wife on Tuesday.

    According to a source, the incident occurred around 9.30pm in his house at Egbeda, Lagos. The suspect, the source added, allegedly went to Police Officers Wife Association (POWA) market to relax after closing from work before going home.

    “When he got home, his wife helped him to hang his clothes. She kept the gun on the bed while helping him with his dresses. The pistol suddenly exploded and the bullet hit the woman on her lap. The corporal rushed her to a nearby hospital but all efforts by the doctors and nurses to save her life failed, “the source said.

    Police spokesman Joe Offor, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) described the incident as an accidental discharge.

    Offor described Oloko as a “fine gentleman.”

    Investigations, Offor said, showed that the couple’s families are not quarrelling.

    The Nation learnt that Oloko’s case has been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

    Obasanjo in road mishap on anniversary of wife’s death

    SHORTLY after attending activities marking the 10th anniversary of his late wife Stella, former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday had a tyre blowout in the vehicle conveying him to the Murtala International Airport in Lagos.

    Sources close to the Federal Road Safety Commission confirmed that it happened at the Sagamu interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan Express road.

    The former president was on his way to Lagos to board a flight to Abidjan. The tyre was changed and he has since left for Abidjan to commence election monitoring activities for Cote D’Ivoire’s Presidential Election holding tomorrow.

    At the memorial Obasanjo lapsed into the past fun memory of life with his late wife when she was alive and said with solemn tone that he would continue to miss her greatly.

    He added that other members of his family and that of the Abebe in Ishan, Edo State, still miss Stella, a decade after her demise.

    Stella died as a sitting First Lady in October 23, 2005 following surgery at a hospital in Spain.

    He said, “I won’t say much about her today because much had been written already in my tribute about my late wife in the book, ‘My Watch’ and part of it says, she will be dearly missed by me, my family and the Abebe family.”

    Also, Mr. John Abebe who spoke on behalf of the Abebe family said their sister and daughter would be missed.

    For the Deputy National chairman,  All Progressives Congress (APC), South, Segun Oni described late Stella as quintessential woman, who was born and raised in family reputed for  humility and integrity.

    Oni who spoke with reporters, said his close interaction with the Abebe family gave him insight into the late the  Stella’s whose pedigree could not be over-emphasized.

    The officiating clergy,  Pastor Yussuf Obaje in the memorial service sermon titled “Keep her memory alive,” described Stella as an epitome of womanhood and urged the family to continue to keep her legacy alive while Senator Ben Murray – Bruce described her as an unusual and global woman.

    In attendance at the memorial service are Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Ogun state governor, Sen. Ibikunke Amosun, Mr. Funso Kupolokun among others.
