Manchester City have a chance to get revenge over Wigan Athletic for their 2013 FA Cup final defeat after being drawn against the third-tier leaders in the fifth round of the competition.

Wigan snatched the only goal in the final against City with Ben Watson’s late header to lift the famous old trophy, though they were relegated from the Premier League that season.

Manchester United visit Huddersfield Town or second-tier Birmingham City while Chelsea, who lost to Arsenal in the 2017 final, host Championship side Hull City after Monday’s draw.

Carragher happy to see son James sign for  Wigan

Former England and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has spoken of his pride after his son James signed a youth contract with Wigan.

Carragher made over 500 Premier League appearances for the Anfield outfit before hanging up his boots in 2013 — and his son is on course to follow in his footsteps.

The Sportsmail columnist posted a picture of the delighted youngster signing academy terms on his Instagram account.

Carragher, who also won 38 caps for the England senior side during his successful career, captioned his post: ‘Proud of you son well done.’

James, who signed for Liverpool in 2011, will now ply his trade in the academy ranks at Wigan.

The Latics were recently relegated to League One after just one season back in the Championship.

Carragher junior will be hoping to emulate his father’s professional career, which saw become a fans’ favourite at Liverpool.

During his trophy-laden spell at Anfield, Carragher helped the Premier League club secure two FA Cup victories, three League Cup wins and he played a starring role in the memorable 2005 Champions League triumph.

The 39-year-old, who is now a football pundit for Sky Sports, also represented England at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

…qualify for Europe, faces relegation battle

Ben Watson’s injury-time header won the FA Cup for Wigan for the first time as they stunned hot favourites Manchester City in the final at Wembley.

Watson headed Shaun Maloney’s corner high into the net to sink City, who were down to ten men following the late dismissal of full-back Pablo Zabaleta for a second bookable offence.

It was a deserved triumph for the Latics, for whom Callum McManaman was outstanding, and fulfilled a personal dream for chairman Dave Whelan, who broke his leg while playing for Blackburn against Wolves in the 1960 final.
With the victory, the Lactics qualified for the Europa league but faces relegation battle in the English premier league.

But for City it means a trophyless campaign, and raises further questions over the future of manager Roberto Mancini, with speculation suggesting he could be replaced by Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini in the summer.

    Ighalo targets EPL switch

Granada forward, Odion Ighalo, is eyeing a move to the English Premier League at the end of the current season, as former club of Victor Moses Wigan and Swansea are keen on getting the services of the player.

The 23-year-old is Granada’s top scorer last season, and currently on loan at Spanish side after finding his first-team chances limited at Udinese, Futaa.com reports.

Swansea and Wigan are both thought to be weighing up moves for the skillful forward and Ighalo believes he is perfectly suited to the style of football in England.

“I would be very happy to play in England and it is a dream for most players to play in the Premier League,” Futaa.com quoted Ighalo as saying at Sky Sports.

“It has been one of my dreams to come to England and I hope that can happen this summer.

“I have heard some clubs are interested in signing me and we will see what happens at the end of the season.

“I think my style of football would be suited for England and I think I could be a success there.

“I have played in Italy and Spain, but England is where is want to go and play having heard so many good things about the country.”

Ighalo failed to add to his tally of three goals scored so far in the Spanish League, as Granada again spurned goal scoring chances in a 1-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao last Monday.
