    • By Zayd Ibn Isah

Sir: The news of Herbert Wigwe’s death, alongside his wife, son, and another prominent Nigerian, Abimbola Ogunbajo, in a tragic helicopter crash in the USA, hit Nigeria like a bolt from the blue, leaving the nation reeling in shock and sorrow.

Wigwe was one of the great Nigerians who rose to the top by sheer dint of hard work and determination, a man with an insatiable appetite for knowledge. Until his demise, he was the co-founder of Access Bank and the Chief Executive Officer, Access Holdings Ltd.

In an emotional video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Herbert Wigwe was captured addressing his people, offering reassurance of delivering top-tier education through his envisioned institution, the Herbert Wigwe University. His demeanour and words painted a vivid picture of a man who had achieved significant success in life yet remained deeply rooted in his community. Tragically, his death has dashed his aspirations of realizing this noble dream.

Herbert’s death is no doubt, a national tragedy of immense proportion. It came at a moment when Nigeria required every hand on deck to navigate its course towards progress and prosperity. As the saying goes, “In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity,” but his departure leaves us bereft of one of our brightest beacons, extinguishing a flame that once illuminated our path forward.

The death of a philanthropist like him can be described as a loss that leaves a deep void in the fabric of society, similar to the falling of a mighty baobab tree, whose shade provided shelter and sustenance to all who sought refuge beneath it. In times of need, such individuals are like pillars that uphold the community, their absence leaving a gaping hole in the communal support system, akin to removing a vital cog from a well-oiled machine.

Their departure also serves as a timely reminder of the transient nature of life, urging us to cherish and appreciate the contributions of those who dedicate themselves to the betterment of others.

Just as he said in a tweet posted on his official X handle three weeks before the tragic accident: “Today and always, let us remember that life is a precious gift – a chance to breathe, feel, love, experience and connect.

“Let’s honour this gift by living with purpose, kindness, and gratitude, making every moment count. Let us number our days.”

I agree with everything he said. Life is truly a precious gift. Let’s appreciate it because it has an expiry date. And we can truly appreciate it by being a source of joy and blessing to others.

Wigwe, Ogunbanjo, RIPP; Valentine’s; Osundare’s Poem

The tragic loss of CEO Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, founder of Wigwe University, his wife Chizoba, a child and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, chairman, Nigerian Exchange Group Plc in a helicopter crash is a terrible blow to the family, friends and the intellectual Nigerian business community. May they RIPP.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all Nigerians. Congratulations to Nigerian football players, families, coaches, sponsors for overcoming the chronic underfunding of Nigerian sports, and other challenges. Number two is really good and not bad second out 16 teams. Some people died watching you, including football colleagues renowned and respected High Chief Osunde and an NYSC member, unbelievably dead to family and friends at the start of his adult life. Tragic. That sacrifice must count for something? How many governors have bought even one football for schools or complete sports equipment-hurdles, high and long jump, all the balls – table, tennis, etc. etc. like schools worldwide?

Please Google and read Emeritus Professor Niyi Osundare’s latest poem ‘Corruption weds Incompetence’. A masterpiece as usual, it speaks to our problems and the easily identified solutions. Pray it is read to every Nigerian and acted upon by every corrupt Nigerian. ‘TO SURVIVE, NIGERIA NEEDS A YEAR OFF CORRUPTION’.

Everywhere our ‘CINS’ –‘Corruption, Incompetence, Negligence, Selfishness’ destroy our currency, our country.

It is time we all listened and acted  to stop more greed-above-need, complete contract theft and frustration of every well-intentioned government effort, often by officials responsible to deliver the project to the ‘h-angry’ poor, the children in ‘rubbish’ schools, the women in ‘ill-equipped and undermanned’ hospitals, the traveller on the ‘potholed, poorly secured’ road or the entrepreneur drowning in ‘multiple taxation’ from federal, state, local government, area boys and local terrorists and bandits.

For over 70 years, our brightest minds in journalism and every discipline have filled every newspaper with articles, reports and research clearly identifying the problems and solutions to Nigeria’s seemingly irreversible backwardness in  stepping up to success. Let us not forget the army of the public in the ‘Letters to the Editor’ section. In addition, every administration starts with a glossy, well-researched, never implemented manifesto-now called ‘fake manifesto’.

By the end of every administration, military or civilian, there has been almost uniformly failure to bring the manifesto to mature fruition. The country is one-step-forward-five-steps back in economic and other yardsticks of growth. Often the incoming regime, even from the same political party, is too politically petty or corrupt, to build on and finish past administration’s uncompleted projects and strategies. These projects, costing billions rot away, bleeding society and reducing the collective financial inheritance of all citizens. Yet there is no punishment for failure to spend money wisely or finish a project. The country is choking with uncompleted projects costing trillions of naira-an economic crime.

Daily I twice drive past an abandoned NEPA seven storey 100metre long building and see-through monstrosity which could have been completed to make a magnificent office, school, hostel or single flat housing scheme if NEPA had no need for it and the contract smelt of corruption rat. It is exactly like Ikoyi with the ‘now infamous’ abandoned and stripped naked shell of a once proud and hugely costly [to Nigerians] Federal Government Secretariat.

It annoys every honest Nigerian because such monuments were conceived and raised up, as our own pyramids of Egypt, to our glory and future economic advancement, but have mutated into monstrosities testifying to our failure in governance systems. It is our Nigerian citizens’ money abandoned since long before Uncle Bola Ige was murdered 23-12-2001. I know because I took photographs from the top of the abandoned NEPA building of the Educare Trust Gallery that Uncle Bola commissioned.

The entire country is disappointed by the abandoned unfulfilled promise of TINAPA, a major government contribution to Nollywood, strangled and abandoned by subsequent governments. Citizens’ money wasted.

There are thousands of failed projects taunting and tormenting Nigerians nationwide. The worst case is probably Ajaokuta. Conceived between 1967 and 1973, started in 1979, 84% completed by 1983, 98% completed by 1994 and corporate and government quagmire with buyouts and buybacks and stalemates followed. The loser? Nigeria! How much lost? Billions of dollars. Result = zero so far.

The mention of Ajaokuta Steel Mill, is a metaphor for Nigeria’s failure, and annoys most Nigerians as it has hung around Nigeria’s neck like a never-ending chain of financial loss and no steel.  This has disappointed the entire Nigerian population since 1979, 44 years of political and legal problems and failed promises with no solutions. This government is active on the Ajaokuta Steel Mill. When will our losses end and income begin?

The courts are frustrating EFCC and Nigerians. Today’s court success become tomorrow’s court failure. Criminals go free with really petty fines for really major crimes. Massive multi-billion naira crimes with successful initial prosecution rendered ‘null and void’ on the technicality of whether investigation was initiated before or after the then jailed party was in or out of employment. It used to be a ‘thief is a thief’ especially after returning more than N2billion, no matter which court or employment.

It has been reiterated that statutory fines in the laws should be erased from all laws as they are out of tune with financial reality. Fine size should be at the discretion of the judge and relevant to the crime and should not be ‘jail or a fine’ but ‘jail and a fine’.

Wigwe: Nigeria to collaborate with US agency on helicopter crash

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) said on Monday, February 12, that it is offering its full cooperation to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the investigation of the tragic Airbus Helicopter EC130B4 crash that resulted in the death of Dr Herbert Wigwe, Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings and five others who were onboard.

NSIB, the multimodal transport agency in Nigeria responsible for promoting transport safety and conducting objective and thorough, investigations into transport accidents, said it is compelled to ink the collaboration with the US body as a State with a special interest in the accidents involving its citizens.

In a statement, the NSIB said since the accident occurred, the Director General of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, Captain Alex Badeh has established contact with NTSB, in accordance with Chapter 5 subsection 27 of ICAO’s Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation – Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation, which grants a State (nation) special interest in an accident involving its citizens.

Citing the ICAO provision, Badeh said state that has a special interest in an accident by virtue of fatalities or serious injuries to its citizens shall be entitled to appoint an expert who shall be entitled to: visit the scene of the accident; have access to the relevant information which is approved for public release by the State conducting the investigation, and information on the progress of the investigation.

He said Nigeria can also receive a copy of the Final Report.

Badeh said: “ICAO’s Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil therefore grants Nigeria, through the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, the prerogative to appoint an expert to actively participate in the investigation.

“This participation ensures access to relevant information and facilitates cooperation with the investigating authorities, towards ensuring the investigation reaches a conclusive outcome.

“The ongoing discussion between the NSIB and NTSB has highlighted the diligent investigation efforts of the NTSB. NTSB investigators were present at the crash scene in Halloran Springs, California, on Saturday to collect evidence and conduct initial on-scene documentation.

“The documentation process included aerial mapping of the wreckage with a drone, and site measurements.

“Correspondence between the NSIB and NTSB further revealed that the NTSB investigation into the crash is being led by Aaron Sauer as the investigator in charge, supported by Mark Ward as the deputy investigator in charge.”

He said several other NTSB investigators will also be examining various aspects of the accident including airworthiness and maintenance structures, operations, meteorology, and air traffic control.

Notably, the airworthiness investigation group, he said has initiated a meticulous examination of the debris field, which spans approximately 100 yards.

He added: “All significant components of the helicopter, including the main transmission, engine, and various avionic elements, were identified and accounted for at the accident site.

“In tandem, the operations investigation group has commenced gathering crucial company information, including pilot records, flight dispatch records, and aircraft maintenance records.

“Moving forward, coordination is underway by the NTSB to transfer the wreckage to a secure location on Tuesday for in-depth examination and analysis scheduled

“Parties to the investigation include Orbic Air, LLC, and the FAA. As the investigation continues, other parties could be named. Additionally, the Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA), the French aviation accident investigation agency, will also serve as an accredited representative, due to France being the state of manufacturer the Airbus helicopter and Turbomeca Engine. “Both Airbus Helicopters and Turbomeca Engines will serve as technical advisors to the investigation.”

Badeh said the duration of the accident investigation being conducted by NTSB is expected to take approximately 18 to 24 months to complete.

He said:” The actual duration depends on many factors. Each investigator carries a caseload of many accident investigations which they work on concurrently and each investigation presents its unique complexities.

“The NTSB accident investigation process typically comprises three major milestones. The first is the preliminary investigation report, which contains information gathered by investigators during the on-scene examination.

“This report is expected to be released within 14 to 21 days following the date of the examinations. The next milestone involves the compilation of the public docket, which includes a collection of information gathered throughout the investigation. This typically includes photographs, interview summaries, documentation, and other relevant data.

“Finally, the third milestone is the publication of the final aviation accident report, which serves to conclude the investigation. This report may take up to two years to complete and usually contains analysis and a statement of the probable cause of the accident if determined.

“The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau reaffirms its commitment to collaborate fully with the National Transportation Safety Board, aiming for a thorough and conclusive investigation that will enhance transport safety in both Nigeria and the United States.

“The Airbus Helicopter EC130B4 crash has brought a colossal loss to our dear nation Nigeria. Our hearts go out to the Wigwe and Ogunbanjo families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. We extend our deepest sympathies to them during this difficult time. Updates on the investigation will be provided as information becomes available.”
