Wike: Supreme Court’s confirmation has restored confidence in judiciary

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has said the Supreme Court judgment on his election has restored people’s confidence in the judiciary.

He added that it confirmed the will of the Rivers people.

Wike alleged that if the Supreme Court had nullified his election, he wouldn’t have contested the rerun because of the plot to use security forces to instigate loss of lives.

He spoke yesterday at a thanksgiving service at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Port Harcourt.

It was attended by Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) leaders across the country like Governors Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State.

Also present were ex-First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili and national and state legislators.

Wike noted that God worked for him by reversing what people thought was irreversible, considering the previous judgments of the Election Tribunal and the Appeal Court.  He said: “Nothing is impossible with God. Clerics prophesied a few days to the Supreme Court verdict that the judgment will confirm the mandate given to us by the Rivers people.

“We won the election clearly as has been confirmed by the Supreme Court. If there was a rerun, I wouldn’t have contested because there would have been bloodbath. I resolved not to be part of anything that will cause bloodbath.”

The governor said a plot had been hatched to arrest and detain him to discourage Rivers people before the legislative elections earlier scheduled for February 6.

According to him, the political powers were already indiscriminately  arresting PDP members and leaders across the state, preparatory to the rerun.

He assured the people that he would use the mandate to advance development.

Wike reiterated his earlier declaration that he would not allow the rigging of the rerun, noting that any Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official who attempted to rig would be treated as an armed robber.

He said: “I am the executive governor of Rivers State and a strong one for that matter. We will support INEC to conduct credible elections.  Any official who plans to rig will get the treatment reserved for armed robbers.”

Wike noted that the failure of the evil plotters meant that Rivers people would return all the lawmakers whose elections were nullified by the Appeal Court.

He called for a fight against corruption, urging support for the prosecution of those who stole Rivers money.

He said his administration will recover stolen funds.

Wike assured the Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside, that he would be accommodated in the process of developing the state.  He said Peterside is not an orphan “I will be a father to Dakuku Peterside. He is not an orphan.”

The Archbishop of Niger Delta Province, Dr. Ignatius Kattey, said Wike’s victory at the Supreme Court has brought peace to the state.

He advised the governor to be father of all the people.

  • …CNPP congratulates Wike, Umahi, Amosun

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has congratulated the four governors, whose elections were recently upheld by the Supreme Court,  describing the development as another milestone in the strengthening of Nigeria’s democracy.

CNPP described the affirmation of the elections of Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Ibikunle Amosun of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, as a confirmation that the judiciary is playing its role as the arbiter in the nation’s democracy.

A statement issued by CNPP Chairman, Alhaji Balarabe Musa said: “all parties to the litigations that led the rulings should now team up for the development of their respective states since their contest for public office was to serve the people in the first place.

“CNPP will continue to demand for improvement to the electoral process to ensure that those who win elections are able to concentrate on governance instead of spending several months or even years distracted in courts.”

The statement disclosed that CNPP is keenly watching to see how the Supreme Court will rule on other pending governorship elections petitions before it as it will not accept anything that goes contrary to the will of the people.

Supreme Court okays Wike, Amosun, Umahi

The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the elections of three governors.

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun and Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi were cleared by the apex court to continue in office.

The court, in three unanimous judgments in the appeals filed by Wike, his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), set aside the concurrent judgments of the Rivers State governorship election and the Court of Appeal, Abuja.

The appeals were all heard yesterday by a seven-man panel headed by Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Mahmud Mohammed.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who read the lead judgments in the three appeals, upheld the return of Wike as winner of the election.

She said: “I find and hold that this appeal is meritorious and it is allowed. The judgment of the lower court delivered on the 16th of November 2015 and the judgment of the tribunal delivered on 24th October 2015 are hereby set aside.

“The petition of the petitioners is dismissed. The return of Nyesom Wike as governor of Rivers State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is restored.”

Justice Kekere-Ekun said she will provide reasons for her decision on February 12.

Justices Mohammed, Ibrahim Mohammed Sylvester Ngwuta, Kumai Akaahs and Amiru Sanusi, who were members of the panel, agreed with Justice Kekere-Ekun’s lead judgment.

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dakuku Peterside, and his party had gone before the Rivers State Governorship Election Tribunal to challenge Wike’s return by INEC as the winner of the April 11, 2015 governorship election.

The tribunal, which sat in Abuja, held in its judgment of October 24, 2015, in favour of the petitioners, voided the election on grounds of widespread violence and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

It ordered a rerun election within 90 days.

Wike, PDP and INEC appealed the tribunal’s decision at the Court of Appeal, Abuja. The appellate court, in a unanimous judgment by a five-man panel on November 16, 2015, upheld the tribunal’s judgment.

Both decisions were set aside yesterday by the apex court in the judgment given around 6.30pm.

Supporters of Wike and his party, who were in court, broke into jubilation as Peterside’s supporters looked mournful.

In a unanimous decision, the court dismissed the appeal by the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Adegboyega Isiaka.

Isiaka had challenged the judgments of the Court of Appeal and the Ogun State Governorship Election Tribunal, which upheld the election of Ibikunle Amosun as governor.

Justice Akaahs, who read the lead judgment held that the appeal lacked merit and dismissed it.

The apex court equally dismissed the appeal by the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Ebonyi State, Edward Nkwegu.

Justice Chima Centus Nweze, who read the lead judgment, held that the preliminary objection raised by Umahi succeeds in part.

He resolved the two issues on the main appeal against the appellant.

“No merit in this appeal. Umahi is the duly elected governor of Ebonyi State. Reasons will be given on Friday, January 29,” he held.

    It’s for democracy, says Wike

Rivers State Governor  Nyesom Wike, has said his victory at the Supreme Court will lead to greater delivery of democracy dividends in the state.

Immediately after yesterday’s judgment by the apex court, Wike trekked on major streets of Port Harcourt, before returning to the Government House. He was greeted by joyous people..

During the trek, he told reporters that his victory at the Supreme Court is for the rule of law and the people of Rivers state.

He noted that the apex court’s judgment was a victory for democracy and a confirmation that the will of God would always prevail over the machinations of men.

The Rivers governor noted that the judgment that validated his election was a confirmation of the mandate freely given to him by the people.

He extended a hand of fellowship to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, to join hands with his administration to develop the state.

Wike lauded Peterside, a former member of the House of Representatives, for approaching the judiciary, rather than resorting to violence.

He assured that Rivers people would continue to benefit from the pro-people projects and programmes of his administration.

  • Wike’s political howler

As if from the blues, Governor Nyesom Wike suddenly woke up one day to do what he is normally expected to do: accuse his sworn enemy, Minister of Transport and Aviation, Honourable Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, of hosting Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, to a birthday dinner. A former Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, had explained why Rotimi Amaechi’s administration hosted the Nobel Laureate for a birthday dinner (“Why Amaechi hosted Soyinka”, Nation, January 11, p7). According to her, the decision to honour Prof. Soyinka “had a link with his role in the naming of Port Harcourt as the UNESCO world book capital city 2014”. Obviously, this is a legacy Amaechi left for Wike to cherish and adore as the current Governor of Rivers State whose capital city, Port Harcourt, of all capital cities in Nigeria, was so enviously honoured by a prestigious international organization like the UNESCO. The honour did not come by Wike’s influence or Amaechi’s, but by Soyinka’s personal achievements and robust international connection.

Now, as expected, Semenitari’s successor, a Dr. Austin Tam-George, speaking for Wike, not only alleged that ¦ 82m was “wasted” on hosting the Nobel Laureate, but threatened that Wike’s extremely shaky administration would involve the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in probing the expenditure on the programme. However, Mrs. Semenitari had replied. According to her, “¦ 82 million was not spent on the dinner alone as Tam-George, PDP and their cohorts would want the world to believe”. She then challenged Tam-George to release the entire documents as contained in her (Sementari’s) memo, reference MOI/com /c./82/vol iii/227 “to cover dance, drama by University of Port Harcourt Arts Village, Great Singha and his highlife band; set design, stage lighting, costume design and stage property, dinner, transportation and accommodation of guests from outside the country and those outside Rivers State, among others”.

She said that instead of putting into proper context what necessitated the honour for the Nobel Laureate, the detractors exhibited “a sinister motive” of referring to Prof. Soyinka as “a friend of Amaechi”, thus reducing the state honour to a personal non-issue. She noted that having turned down several other honours for his enormous contributions to the growth of the literary industry in Rivers State, “it was a decision of the State Executive Council to celebrate a man who had been a strong voice in the birth of Garden City Literary Festival (later Port Harcourt Literary Festival) which catapulted the state to a global player in the arts”.

On his part, Professor Wole Soyinka had graciously “honoured” Wike with a reply which would not have been necessary if Wike had not attempted to bring his friend, Rotimi Amaechi, into the picture as his main target. Hence, instead of a probe for his friend, Rotimi Amaechi alone who organized the dinner in his honour, what we read as Soyinka’s reply was “¦ 82 dinner probe: Soyinka dares EFCC, knocks Wike”, (The Punch, January 8, p7). Soyinka sees Wike’s “present level of abominable distractions as causing despair”, anticipating his warning to the nation that when you fight corruption “corruption strikes back”. He continues, “The unprecedented call by this governor is prescient of a warning I recounted in my recent pamphlet ‘The republic of liars’, and was taken from my address to an anti-corruption global conference that took place in Tunisia two years ago”. Describing Wike as wikeleaks, Soyinka agreed with his (Wike’s) call for a probe into the money for the dinner in his honour: “I do however fully support the wikeleaks call for multi-directional probes”, he said, but more importantly, “I recommend further that he involves the services of the INTERPOL to guarantee its extension to all international organizations and governments to whom I owe accountable events of recognition – including birthday luncheons, dinners, cultural receptions and events of real, fictitious, or simply opportunistic flavouring – to which I have submitted myself”.

Now, with all the honours accorded Soyinka by international communities, he might just as well have asked “what then is the big deal about Wike’s howler concerning Amaechi’s addition to the many similar honours given to him at the international level?” Hence, in my judgment, this matter, certainly, is simply making a mountain out of a mole-hill. As for Amaechi, now Minister of Transport and Aviation and Soyinka’s friend who was really Wike’s target, he simply asked Wike “to go to court instead of peddling lies against him and Soyinka”. He said it was “unfortunate” for Wike to peddle lies against him and Soyinka, the Nobel Laureate, in order to “criminalize legitimate government transaction”. Amaehi continued, “Since Wike is blind to his responsibilities as the governor of Rivers State and has insisted on attacking the person and reputation of Amaechi as his one and only project, then let him go to court to prove his allegations and stop the nefarious insinuations”. Period!

But the Rivers State APC has apologized to Soyinka on the N82m alleged expenditure (Daily Trust, January 12, p.20).  Describing as unfortunate the embarrassment caused him by the recent allegation by the state government that former Governor Chibuike Amaechi spent a sum of N82m to organize a birthday “dinner” in his honour, the Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC), in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanga, said: “On behalf of the good people of Rivers State, we hereby tender our unreserved apology to Prof. Soyinka and we assure him that Wike’s vile attempt to link him to an imaginary corruption will fail.  This accusation is nothing but the ranting of a drowning man looking for whom to pull along into the sinking pool but Wike has over-reached himself this time because Prof. Soyinka is globally renowned as a man of impeccable integrity who has never been associated with corruption in his 80 years on earth”

That Wike could descend so low as to indirectly attack Soyinka on the well deserved honour accorded him by a governor who is well educated on a matter of that nature, like giving honour to whom honour is due, clearly shows the semi-illiterate and primitive mentality of Governor Wike. Let him, at least, be reminded that the saying might be true after all that a prophet is not honoured in his own home. For Wike, he should be told, out of his ignorance, that Prof. Soyinka had been accorded more celebrity dinners of similar qualities abroad than the one he is making so much noise about.  My judgment is that the man, Nyesom Wike, is destined to misadventures and misfirings most of the time.

It should be noted that once again, in his tragic political adventures, Wike’s hoopla has turned to Wike’s political howler. On his blind and misguided attack on the duo of Amaechi and Soyinka, Wike, the irritant Governor of Rivers State, has goofed again, as in his character, and probably beyond redemption. Perhaps he, like many undisclosed others, needs deliverance.

Wike’s ex-Media Adviser: why I defected to APC

The immediate past Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, yesterday in Port Harcourt stated that he decided to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on account of the love shown him by APC leaders when he recently escaped assassins’ bullets in the state and took ill afterwards.

Inko-Tariah, who is publisher of the Port Harcourt-based Hard Truth newspaper, disclosed that former Rivers governor and now Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Rivers APC’s governorship candidate, Dr Dakuku Peterside; and an ex-Sole Administrator of the Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority, Ade Adeogun, all APC leaders, cared for and assisted him in his trying period, when Wike, of the PDP, abandoned him.

In defecting to the APC, he noted that it was natural for him to reciprocate the kind gesture of leaders of the party, thereby supporting Peterside to emerge as Rivers’ next governor in 2016.

The former media adviser stressed that although he criticised Amaechi in the past, it was reinvigorating to note that the transportation minister called to sympathise with him and gave his widow’s mite.

Inko-Tariah declared that to reciprocate Amaechi’s gesture, he would do his best to ensure that Peterside emerge as governor of the state in the event of a rerun.

He said: “It was surprising that a man I censured, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, CON, the Hon. Minister of Transportation, was the same person who showed unsolicited love and care.

“It was reinvigorating when he called to sympathise and also gave his widow’s mite, while I was already in the United States for medical treatment, after reading my resignation letter. How compassionate can a man be!

“On my support for Hon. (Dr.) Dakuku Peterside, it is only natural that one reciprocates gestures. Therefore, I state my support for Rt. Hon. Amaechi and Dr Peterside for the love they have shown.

“Moreso, Dr Peterside is a man whose refreshing initiatives and articulated policy options will help refuel the ethos of good governance in Rivers State.”

Inko-Tariah, while giving further insight into his reason for resigning from Wike’s government, noted that he sustained head injuries from falling in a bathroom, after earlier escaping assassination, declaring that the Rivers governor did not show concern for his plight.

  • Amaechi’s, Wike’s face-off deepens

    Amaechi’s, Wike’s face-off deepens

THE face-off between Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike over alleged N82 million spent in hosting Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka to a birthday dinner has deepened.

Amaechi hosted Soyinka to a birthday dinner while he was the state’s helmsman.

Wike’s camp said yesterday that his administration would write to Prof. Soyinka to return the money, if he was given any cash during the birthday bash.

The governor, through his Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, claimed details of the N82 million was made available to the state police command, adding that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would be involved.

But Amaechi, through his media office in Port Harcourt, said his administration never misappropriated N82 million in hosting the Nobel laureate.

The minister warned Wike as well as his “coterie of court jesters and attention-seekers”  to desist from peddling lies, making false allegations and criminalising legitimate government transactions in their desperate bid to discredit his person and reputation.

The former governor asked his successor to go to court, if he had any case of fraud or misappropriation of the state’s funds against him.

The N82 million allegation by Wike and his people, according to the Transportation minister, is aimed at “distracting Rivers people from the incumbent governor’s massive electoral fraud, which different tribunals and appellate courts confirmed, as well as Wike’s gross incompetence and abysmal performance in Rivers State”.

Amaechi’s media office said: “Wike must stop these silly distractions. Rivers people are not interested in his lies and witch-hunt. Rather, Rivers people want to know what will happen to their children that he stopped and cancelled the funding of their scholarships abroad. Rivers people want to know why the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) set up by law, is no longer functioning. Why, instead of quality education, a standard set by his predecessor (Amaechi),  grasses and weeds have taken over the beautiful schools built by Amaechi.

“Rivers people want to know why the standard health facilities and services put in place by the Amaechi administration are rotting away. Not this petty rambling.

“Rivers people want to know why Wike’s government does not care about the security of life and property, as violence and criminals have taken over. Rivers people want to know why it feels as if there is no government in Rivers State, and this is despite the billions of naira accruing to Wike’s administration and the tens of billions of naira borrowed.”

Amaechi warned the governor against dragging the names of respected Nigerians, who had made the country proud globally and known internationally to be honest and forthright like Prof. Soyinka, into his attacks.

His media office urged the governor to go to court to prove his allegations.

Stability of Nigeria depends on judiciary, says Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has stated that the stability of Nigeria depends on the judicial arm of government.

Addressing a cross-section of people at the state’s New Year banquet held at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on Friday night, the governor urged them to always respect the judiciary, irrespective of the judgment which sacked him and state and federal lawmakers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The governor added that his administration has been respecting the full separation of powers, which he said had led to the independence of the judiciary and the legislative arms of government.

While expressing happiness of living up to his promise to revive the judiciary, the governor said: “You do not need to control any arm of government. What you need is mutual cooperation to develop the state.”

Listing the achievements of his administration, including roads, school development, empowerment programmes, health and agricultural schemes, the governor further assured that the New Year would witness more development projects in all sectors, in line with his vision for the state.

Vowing never to be distracted by criticisms, Wike said the bank loans his administration secured from some banks were to finance projects that would impact positively on the lives of the people, saying “If I take a loan, I will use it to the benefit of Rivers people; I will not use it to play politics.”
