  • Group calls for Wike’s arrest

    •Plans mega protest

A group, the Rivers Peoples’ Forum (RPF), has called for the arrest and prosecution of the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, for openly threatening the security of the state.

It is also planning the “mother of all protests,” to ensure the prosecution of Wike by the police.

RPF, through its President, Charles Bekwele, yesterday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, described Wike’s statement of making the state ungovernable and life uncomfortable for Governor Rotimi Amaechi, as threats to democracy.

The government said Amaechi, who doubles as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), would not lose focus over provocative statements by members of the opposition.

The Chief of Staff, Government House, Tony Okocha, said Amaechi remained committed to developing the state.

“We refuse to be deterred. The governor (Amaechi) has refused to lose focus because of what is going on. His focus and mission are to improve the lives of our people. His vision is to put smiles on the faces of our people.

“His (Amaechi’s) vision is to develop our people rapidly in a manner that nobody else has done in the state. That is his mission and we are still bent on it.

“Before the end of this month, we will be on the streets commissioning projects.

“So that Nigerians will now know what projects the governor has been able to do in Rivers State.

The RPF said: “It is a shame that the police, instead of arresting and prosecuting Wike, are allowing him to arrogantly roam the streets, making more provocative and hateful comments against the state and its people.

“The same police declared wanted and arrested supporters of Governor Amaechi for flimsy reasons. So, why are they not arresting a man who openly threatened the people, the peace and security of Rivers State? Is Nyesom Wike above the law?”

“We are calling on the Inspector-General of Police (Mohammed Abubakar), to arrest and prosecute Nyesom Wike now.”

“He is a danger to our democracy. Since he was appointed junior minister, he has carried on like a demi-god, acting like he is above the law. Wike’s excesses must be brought to a halt.”

•‘He’s drowning man’, minister’s supporter replies

THREE-term member of the House of Representatives from Rivers State, Chief Andrew Uchendu, said yesterday that it was wrong for the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike to aspire to succeed Governor Rotimi Amaechi in 2015.

Uchendu (Emohua/Ikwerre Fed Constituency) in an interview also condemned the recent threat by Wike to make life more uncomfortable for the governor until he begged him (Wike).

He described the minister as a rascal and an ingrate, who should not be taken seriously or allowed to succeed Amaechi since the two of them are from the same part of the state.

However, an ally of Wike, Mr Samuel Nwanosike, dismissed Uchendu as a politically-drowning grandpa whose views on Rivers politics carry no weight.

He said Uchendu should be the last person to talk about zoning, having ‘monopolised’ the seat he is currently occupying for the third term.

But the Rep charged back, saying: “You can imagine the level of ignorance displayed by Wike and his foot soldiers. Don’t they know that legislators can go for as many times as possible?”

“The allegations levelled against me are mere hearsay and untrue. All the roads have been completed.”

However, Nwanosike said although Wike had not declared his intention to vie for the governorship, Uchendu should point to any section of the 1999 Constitution criminalising an ambition by any qualified person, including Wike, to be governor of his state.

He said: “Chief Uchendu is the wrong person to talk about zoning of elective office, because he has not lived by example. If he did, why did he not relinquish the House of Representatives slot to Ikwerre LG, the way his predecessor, Appolos Amadi, did after one term in office?

“Instead, Uchendu kept the office to himself for three solid terms. At that time, he saw nothing wrong with one man from one section of the constituency holding on to office for 12 years, to the exclusion of all others.

“By jumping to the arena in order to please his master, Governor Amaechi, on Wike’s statement that he would make life uncomfortable for persons who want to destroy Obio/Akpor LG, Uchendu has merely admitted that he is one of those who want to destroy Obio/Akpor LG.

“By that admission, does Uchendu expect the Obio/Akpor people to fold their arms and watch him and his collaborators destroy the LGA? Those who have no intention to destroy Obio/Akpor LG have nothing to worry about what the minister of state for education said.

“Uchendu is a man who is looking for soft-landing, so that he can escape the wrath of the people of Emohua and Ikwerre LGAs, who he has cheated by poor representation in the House of Representatives for 12 years.

“He should address the press on his record of achievements for 12 years and say which of the road projects given to him by the Amaechi government that he executed or failed to execute. Has he forgotten the Elibrada-Oduoha Road that he abandoned, after collecting so much money from his master, Chibuike Amaechi?”

Uchendu said he has fixed all the roads in question.

I’ll make life more uncomfortable for Amaechi, Wike vows

    •Says Gov must beg him
•Declares: ‘If President Jonathan removes me as minister, I’ll continue to fight’

Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State must brace up for more trouble from the opposition in the days and months ahead, if the threat, yesterday, by one of the forces against him, is anything to go by.

Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, boasted at a reception for him in Port Harcourt that he is ready to make life even more uncomfortable for the governor who is locked in the political battle of his life with the Presidency and his party (PDP), at the state and federal levels; the State Police Commissioner, Mbu Joseph Mbu and the Police Command; the Minister and his five supporters in the State House of Assembly; ex-militants; as well as other political forces from within and outside the state.

The reception also doubled as a grand finale of the inauguration of units of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI) in Obio/Akpor LGA of the state.

Wike is the grand patron of GDI.

“We will make sure they will not sleep again, as they are sleeping now. They will not sleep with their two eyes closed. One eye will be open because they know there is danger,” the minister said, 24 hours after Amaechi told a delegation of Niger Delta Bishops who are trying to resolve the political crisis in the state that Wike remains a minister today by “the grace of God” and his (Amaechi’s) effort.

The governor’s words: “Nyesom Wike was appointed Chief of Staff by me. Nyesom Wike as a Minister of State, I nominated him. I was under pressure by the President to drop him, I refused. The President persuaded me to drop him and bring a woman but I refused.

” I heard he is going all over town saying I didn’t appoint him, I didn’t appoint him, the President appointed him but I nominated him to be a minister as the Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum. I did, but you know character doesn’t come easily, character is a very difficult thing and I am a man of character.”

But in what looked like a response to the broadside fired at him on Friday by Amaechi, the minister said yesterday that the governor and the 27 members of the State Assembly on his side have not had enough trouble occasioned by their April 22 suspension of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Council.

Wike, who is aspiring to replace Amaechi as governor in 2015, hails from the local government area. He was a two-term chairman of the council.

The minister, speaking at yesterday’s rally, said: “They said we are nobody. Then they have seen. When you are dealing with nobody, be careful. The nobody will show you that he is somebody. We will make sure they will not sleep again. As they are sleeping, they will not sleep with their two eyes closed. One eye will be open, because they know there is danger.

“Those who are saying they must remove me, I have even overstayed. For you to be minister for two years, you must thank your God. If today we are no longer minister, do not worry yourself. It will not change us. We will continue to fight for what we believe in.

“We were not minister when we fought for them in 2007. When we were here, they were not having problems. Now, we have gone, they are having problems.

“We have always told them: you cannot do it. What you do not know, you do not know. It does not matter, whatever money you have, money cannot buy everything. Now, they are having sleepless nights. When we were here, were they having sleepless nights?

“When we were here, were they not travelling up and down? Are they travelling again? Tell them, they should come and beg us. Tell them to come back and beg us. We will tell them the secret. What God has not given to you, you do not need to do anything about it.

“I can assure you, all they are asking for: they want a commissioner of police that will be arresting you. Anytime they call the CP, he will arrest you. But let me tell you, we are not interested in whoever comes here (CP), all we are interested in is to have somebody who will not be partial.

“Let them bring whoever they want to bring (as CP).We want somebody who will want democracy to be practised in Rivers State. They said one man, one vote. Now, they do not want one man, one vote again.

“Obio/Akpor LGA is not a place you can toy with. Those who feel they can suspend Obio/Akpor council officials, we will make them uncomfortable. They felt once they had dissolved the council, they would sleep.

“The party has suspended them, because they have touched the lion and when you touch the lion, you know the consequences. Since they said the councillors will not take their salaries, they also will know that they will not belong to the PDP.

“The party chairman (Chief Felix Obuah) warned them and they said he would not be able to do anything. At the end of the day, they are going to court to challenge us. We will meet them in court. We are not afraid of the court. We are accustomed to it. All the ones they have gone, we have been winning them and we will continue to win them.

“They are doing everything they can. They are using their power and their money. Money cannot solve all problems. Sometimes, you have to come back home and realise that the people matter a lot. It is the power of the people that has put us in positions and you must come back to thank the people.

“Forget about what they are doing to you (his supporters). Do not worry. We are all together. Do not lose hope. God is on the throne.”

Wike said the suspended Chairman of Obio/Akpor LG, Mr. Timothy Nsirim, who also attended the rally; his deputy, Solomon Eke, and the 17 councillors have been denied their salaries since April, but said that is part of the sacrifice to make democracy survive.

The minister asked the people of the state to continue to support President Jonathan and the party.

He urged members of the GDI, in particular, to go to all the wards, communities and families in the state not to abandon President Jonathan and his wife.

Wike added: “Your duty as GDI members is to go and mobilise the entire state for our son (Jonathan), eventually when he decides to run and we believe the people of the Southsouth zone cannot sacrifice, for whatever it is, our own son, for anything less than President.”

Factional Chairman of the PDP in the state, Chief Felix Obuah, pledged at the function to reconcile Amaechi, Wike and other aggrieved members of the party in the state.

Obuah said: “I want to invite the governor (Amaechi), the minister (Wike) and all aggrieved members of Ikwerre community, to be with me in my palace next weekend. Let us sit down and fashion a way forward. I will not sit down and see my children quarrelling, and I will not feel concerned.”

A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara, described Obio/Akpor LGA as the home of the GDI and the PDP, stressing that “anybody standing on your way is standing before a moving train and will be crushed.”

The President-General of the GDI, Bright Amewhule, in his remarks, stated that President Jonathan would be supported to return in 2015 and that they were solidly behind Wike.

The ceremony is the latest by the anti-Amaechi camp in the state.

Similar ceremonies by pro-Amaechi groups are routinely disallowed by the police, prompting observers from within and outside the state to accuse the police leadership in the state of taking sides.

A rally scheduled for last Tuesday by civil rights groups to protest what they called anti-democratic tendencies in the state was not allowed to hold by the police.

Some militants even threatened that the lives of some of those expected at the rally were not safe should they come.

Call Wike, Obuah to order, Ake faction urges Jonathan

The Chief Godwin Ake faction of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has urged President Goodluck Jonathan and the party’s leadership to call Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike and the factional party chair, Mr. Felix Obuah, to order.

A statement by George Ukwuoma, the Publicity Secretary of the Ake-led faction, identified Wike and Obuah as masterminds of the prevailing lawlessness in the state PDP, stressing that their “unguarded” statements could cause chaos.

He accused the duo of deliberately heating up the polity, ostensibly to destroy the party and truncate democracy in the state, warning that this “must stop henceforth”.

“Such statements include his (Obuah’s) congratulatory message to Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) even when it was clear to the whole country and world that Governor Chibuike Amaechi beat Jang with a clear 19 to 16 votes and is the authentic chairman of the NGF.

“Another instance is Obuah’s congratulatory message to Hon. Evans Bipi of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who proclaimed himself Speaker of the Assembly after a coup by him and four other members to impeach Speaker Otelemaba Dan Amachree failed on the day they attempted to disrupt sitting and cause mayhem at the Assembly with the help of their thugs and police accomplices.

“Or is Obuah saying to the state and the nation that five is greater than 27? It’s never possible for five members out of a 32-member Assembly to carry out an impeachment process.”

The statement also urged the PDP leadership to warn Obuah against making false and malicious statements against Governor Rotimi Amaechi, stating that he remains the leader of the party in the state.

It also condemned Wike’s actions and statements, saying the minister has carried on like an alternate governor.

“We have watched with dismay and utter disgust the way and manner Wike has carried on as if he’s the alternate, most times, substantive governor. This is most condemnable. That young man(Wike) is just a Minister, a deputy minister at that, and must be reminded at all times that there is only one governor and leader of the party in the state, which is Governor Amaechi and he must mandatorily subjugate himself to the leadership of the governor or get out of the party.”

“This Wike group is only deceiving the President and the party leadership, claiming that they have the support of the people when it’s clear they don’t. What they are doing is destroying the party. The people working with them are not card-carrying members of the PDP. They mostly consist of expired politicians, deadwoods and people who we roundly beat in the last elections as candidates of opposition parties and are now seeking relevance. These are the people Wike brought to Abuja as PDP leaders. They are not even PDP members.

“The vast majority of Rivers people and Rivers PDP are solidly behind Governor Amaechi; the grassroots are for Amaechi. Elected and appointed PDP leaders from Ward to the national level are solidly behind Governor Amaechi. So Wike’s and Obuah’s claims to the Presidency that they are in control should be put to a stop now as it would end up destroying the formidable structure built by the PDP in the state.”

“We challenge them to call for a meeting of elected and appointed leaders of the party in the state from Ward to national level; let’s see how many will attend. This would prove that their purported clout in the state PDP is false. They should stop deceiving the party and Mr. President.”

“We, therefore, urge our dear President Goodluck Jonathan, the Chairman PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih and the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur to take relevant action and immediately call to order and correct this false campaign being carried out by Wike, his acolyte Obuah and their minute minority, which is threatening to swallow and destroy the PDP in the state,” the statement said.

Rivers’ crisis: Arewa group threatens to retaliate attack on governors

A socio-political group, under the aegis of the Arewa Rapid Response Network (ARRN) has threatened to retaliate the attack on four northern governors at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Tuesday.

In a statement signed by the national coordinator of the ARRN, Mallam Yakubu Ahmed, the group warned the perpetrators against allowing the chain of events in Rivers to snowball into a national crisis capable of truncating the nation’s democracy.

Governors Rabiu Kwakwanso (Kano), Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) were attacked by supporters of the Minister of State, Mr. Nyesom Wike. Their host, Governor Rotimi Amaechi, also came under attack.

Eye witnesses said the mob attacked the convoy of Amaechi and the four governors with stones and clubs, smashing the windshield of some of the vehicles, including the coaster bus in which commissioners rode. They were also shouting obscenities at the convoy.

Over 5,000 supporters of Wike, under the aegis of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), armed with placards bearing various inscriptions, moved to the airport as early as 7am, protesting against the governors’ visit.

Wike is the grand patron of GDI.

The Arewa group accused the Presidency of having instigated the attack on the governors, adding that it was a calculated attempt by agents of President Goodluck Jonathan to humiliate the visiting northern state governors.

Amaechi, Wike’s supporters clash in Port Harcourt

… Hurl missiles, visiting Northern governors unperturbed

The supporters of the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, clashed on Tuesday at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, with missiles hurled at one another, while the visiting Northern governors were unperturbed.

The Governors of Kano State, Alhaji Rabiu Kwakwanso; Niger State, Alhaji Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu; Jigawa State, Sule Lamido; and Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako;, flew into Port Harcourt on Tuesday morning to show solidarity to the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF).

Over 5,000 supporters of Wike, under the aegis of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), moved to the airport as early as 7 am, to express displeasure on the visit by the northern governors and were confronted by Amaechi’s supporters at the parking lot of the airport, with missiles flying and people scampering to safety.

A prominent Nigerian, who witnessed the incident at the airport, but would not want his name in print, said the clash was uncalled for, stressing that it heightened tension in the area, leading to confusion and passengers had to either hide or run for their lives, to avoid sustaining injuries.

Men of the Rivers State Police Command and operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) were on hand to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

The Secretary-General of the GDI, Samuel Nwanosike, who is also the Rivers Publicity Secretary of the PDP, in a telephone interview, said it was a “peaceful” protest, with Wike supporters “singing and dancing,” to show that they were not happy with the visit of the governors from the North.

As at press time, the four governors were still meeting with their host (Amaechi) at the Government House, Port Harcourt, with reporters patiently waiting for the outcome.

  • Two ‘Wike supporters quit’

The 17 councillors of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, hitherto loyal to the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, are now divided.

Two of the councillors- Linda Wali (Ward 16) and Ndamati Onunwo (Ward 8)- have joined the camp of Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF).

The 15 others, led by the leader of the Legislative Council, Henry Odum, at a briefing yesterday in Port Harcourt, declared that Wike remained their leader and they would continue to support him and President Goodluck Jonathan.

Odum said: “Quite unfortunately, two of our colleagues (Wali and Onunwo) have sold out. They could not stand firm as representatives of their people. Onunwo is a member of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Both of them have been bought over.

“Initially, we were working together. Wali and Onunwo suddenly decided to abandon the cause and join Amaechi. Truth shall prevail. We want justice to be done. We will soon be vindicated.”

The councillors described the five anti-Amaechi lawmakers- Michael Okechukwu Chinda (Obio/Akpor II constituency), Kelechi Godspower Nwogu (Omuma), Evans Bipi (Ogu/Bolo), Martins Amewhule (Obio/Akpor I) and Victor Ihunwo (Port Harcourt III)- as heroes of democracy, urging them not to be deterred.

  •  2015: Amaechi’s supporters vow to frustrate Wike’s structure

The Special Adviser on National Economic Affair to Governor Chibuike Amaechi, Hon. Alex Wele, yesterday vowed to crush Wike’s Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), which he described as a group grown by betrayal.

Alex, who is also the President of Rivers Leadership Advancement Foundation (RIVLEAF), spoke in Port Harcourt, while inaugurating members of RIVLEAF Aluu community chapter in Ikwerre Local Government of Rivers State.

GDI is a political organisation made up of PDP members loyal to Minister of State for Education Mr. Nyesom Wike, while RIVLEAF is one of the Amaechi’s political structures comprising students and ex-students leaders.

Both groups have been at logger heads following the face- off between Wike and Amaechi.

Addressing RIVLEAF members, Alex vowed the group will never allow GDI to succeed.

According to him: “Any day you hear that GDI is coming to this community to hold their meeting, make sure that you also hold your meeting the same day.

“Don’t allow them to blackmail us with their false preaching, and let them know that we are the rightful structure.

“They are traitors. We gave them the opportunity to serve, we gave them the opportunity to become who they are today but they stabbed us at our backs.”

  • Amaechi, Wike in battle of wits after Jonathan’s visit

Amaechi, Wike in battle of wits after Jonathan’s visit

Barely 48 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan left Rivers State, Governor Rotimi Amaechi and a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders (led by Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike) are locked in a battle of wits on who won the President’s confidence.

The Amaechi camp is claiming victory for reuniting with Jonathan. Wike’s group said the President did not shun it as being widely circulated.

The Wike-led PDP stakeholders alleged that the President exchanged pleasantries with the minister before embracing Amaechi.

But fresh facts emerged yesterday that President Jonathan told Governor Rotimi Amaechi to ignore members of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who came to the Port Harcourt International Airport on Saturday to bid him farewell.

Jonathan, it was learnt also, appeared to have sold a dummy to Amaechi because some members of his kitchen cabinet and the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, have been implicated in the campaign against the governor.

According to a source, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, the President was more at home with Amaechi than Wike who has been bankrolling the PDP faction in Rivers State.

The source, who was at the airport, said: “When President Jonathan arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport in a presidential helicopter at about mid-day en route to Abuja from Bayelsa, he embraced Amaechi and members of the Rivers State Exco. He shunned the factional PDP opposition group in the state, led by Wike.

“This made Wike and his group confused and dumbfounded.

“When President Jonathan alighted from the chopper, after shaking hands with Amaechi, the MD of NDDC, Dr. Chris Oboh and a couple of others, he ignored the roll of Wike’s loyalists who stood close to the helicopter.

“When told who they (Wike’s loyalists) were, the President avoided them but moved to the line where Amaechi’s exco members were waiting to greet him.

“The President and Amaechi could be seen talking to each other with Amaechi pointing in the direction of his state exco. Wike, who was also at the airport, was seen frantically trailing behind them.”

Asked what the President told Amaechi, the source added: “When President Jonathan was shown the line by Wike supporters, he reportedly told Amaechi not to worry about ‘this thing because it doesn’t really matter’.

Jonathan added: “Ignore them; I have seen this kind of thing several times. Ignore them, please.”

“After President Jonathan boarded his presidential Jet, Wike and members of his group looked perplexed, forlorn and dejected. Wike had mobilised people to the airport.

“One of them was heard saying: “It’s like we have lost out . Why have they been lying to us that Mr. President is with us, that Jonathan will support us to chase Amaechi from the State? This has shown clearly that they have been lying to us. I will have to go back to Amaechi.”

Responding to a question, the source said: “Now, the rejection by Mr. President has thrown Wike’s camp into disarray. They have been holding meetings to try and calm their people down.”

But a source in Wike’s camp, who confided in our correspondent, said: “As a matter of fact, when the President arrived at the airport, he exchanged pleasantries with the Minister before moving over to Amaechi and his exco members. The minister was closer to the aircraft than the governor. So, the minister was the first port of pleasantries.

“Jonathan did not shun Wike who mobilised PDP stakeholders to the airport for a rousing reception for the President. There was no way the President would shun a member of his cabinet for Amaechi.

“The President also greeted PDP members at the airport; he did not isolate any group for the other. It was evident that they deliberately took the President’s and Amaechi’s photograph for mischief in the media.

“What they have done was to dish out a tissue of lies to deceive the media. We will release an official statement on Monday to let the public know what really happened.”

Asked of Wike’s photograph with the President, the top aide added: “We were not keen on any shot because we had no ill-motive.”

There were indications that Jonathan might have sold a dummy to Amaechi to show Nigerians that he has nothing against the governor.

A top source said: “They said they played politics at the Nigeria Governors Forum; the President also engaged in super politics at the airport. And Amaechi is basking in the euphoria of the super politics.

“The Rivers State project is still on course because PDP stakeholders are yearning for change and they will get it in 2015.

“About two weeks ago, the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, made it clear that only ex-Governors Rufus Ada George and Peter Odili had done well in the state. So, do you think Jonathan will go to Rivers State and give Amaechi a pat on the back? Read between the lines.”

  • Wike stirs Rivers guber race

    Wike stirs Rivers guber race

As the 2015 governorship ambition of Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, further deepens the political tension, Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, takes a fresh look at the Rivers State’s political situation and reports that it may require unforeseen intervention to resolve the riddle

Since things fell apart between Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, observers, who have been following the political footpaths of the minister, especially his growing friendship with the country’s first family, have speculated on his future political roles in Rivers.

Although such observers argued clearly that Wike would most likely be one of Mr. President’s jokers in his alleged bid to control the politics of the oil-rich South-South state, not many reckon with the pace the 2015 governorship tussle in the state is going. What was easily discernible right from the onset was that Wike has won the heart of President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan.

Even some insiders in the People’s Democratic Party in the state, who relied on the once cosy relationship between Wike and Amaechi, when they served as political children of former governor Peter Odili, had insisted that the face-off between Amaechi and Wike would be resolved eventually and that it would never degenerate to an open political battle between the governor and the minister.

To this set of people, according to Mr. Wuzo Chume, a grassroots political leader, the belief was that the governor and Wike would soon be reconciled by the elders.

Chume told The Nation in Port-Harcourt recently that those of them who doubted the suggestion that the battle line was already drawn, however, got the message during the well attended recent wedding of a member of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Evans Bipi and Rhoda Sika. At that wedding, attended by the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, Chume recalled, “we were all shocked when the First Lady not only praised the roles allegedly played by the minister to high heavens but also described him as the uniting force in Rivers politics.”

The President’s wife, who was the mother of the day at the event, said it was Wike that made it possible “for various groups in the state to unite.”

For example, Chume recalled, ” Mrs Jonathan pointed out that her presence and that of former governors of the state at the event was made possible by the minister.”

Mrs Jonathan had said, “I grew up in Rivers State, but I have never seen a gathering of the movers and shakers of this state (Rivers) in this way. When I say I love Wike, people don’t understand. If not for him, I would not have this opportunity to be here.

“It is good to be good. Both Rivers and Bayelsa are one because Bayelsa was created out of the old Rivers State and nobody can separate the two states. But the people must come together in peace and speak with one voice.

“Wike has brought us together and let us thank him and I doff my hat for him (Wike) and I thank Rivers people too,” she said.

The referred former governors of the state, who attended the wedding with Dame Jonathan, The Nation learnt, were Dr. Peter Odili, Chief Rufus Ada George and Celestine Omehia.

After that public endorsement by the First Lady, at the time the President and Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, were embroiled in serious political battles for the soul of Rivers State politics, it has become easier to guess where Wike would fit into in the complex political chessboard.

So, when recently, an Abuja High Court sacked Chief Godpower Ake-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) executive in Rivers State, and enthroned Chief Felix Obuah and Walter Ibibia Opuene as the authentic state Chairman and Secretary respectively, it became more obvious, even to sceptics that the battle line has finally been drawn and that Wike is poised to stand up at the centre of the political theatre of Rivers to dare his erstwhile political associate, Governor Amaechi.

It is common knowledge that Obuah and Opuene, known loyalists of Wike, have been associated with endless political battles with Amaechi over the control of the state’s party structure before the 2015 general elections. Their ascension to the throne therefore means the ascension of their godfather in the running of PDP in the state. This will however depend on how Amaechi, the governor, would play the political chess.

It would be recalled that the Court ruling came following a suit instituted by Felix Obuah who claimed that he and Opuene were both duly elected as Chairman and Secretary respectively at the State congress held in March, 2012 by a committee set up by the headquarters of the party.

Part of the reliefs, claimed by the appellants, all of which the Court granted, include “an order directing the party headquarters to swear them in as Chairman and Secretary respectively and all others duly elected into the State committee at the authentic State congress held on the 17th of March 2012.”

The court also granted an order of perpetual injunction restraining the party from appointing Chief Ake or any other person instead of Obuah and Opuene as Chairman and Secretary of Rivers State PDP.

As members of Odili’s political structure, then known as the ‘ Restoration team,” Wike and Amaechi had fought on a common side some complex political battles and had shared the benefits that accrued from their earlier victories.

It could be recalled that after the 1999 general elections in Rivers State,

Amaechi, who won the Ikwerre constituency seat in the State House of Assembly election, was nominated as the Speaker, while Wike became the Chairman of the rich Obio Akpor Local Government Council.

At that point, they were both considered as some of the most favoured of Odili’s political children.

Their political relationship was to deepen from 2007 when Amaechi suffered grave political injustice as he was blatantly denied PDP governorship ticket to contest the 2007 gubernatorial election under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. In a high wired political mechanization, Amaechi’s cousin, Celestine Omehia, was brought in to replace him.

Till date, this unfortunate incident has been identified as the political manipulation that helped to destroy the once united and powerful Odili’s restoration team.

While many members of the family showed Amaechi their back at that point, Wike was one of the few that remained faithful to Amaechi, his political soulmate then. So, when, in a twist of fate, Amaechi regained his mandate as governor of the state, Wike emerged his strongest political ally, serving as his most powerful Chief of Staff.

The Nation’s checks however showed that this blossoming political relationship was first punctured by Amaechi and Wike’s alleged common interests in the Rivers South Senatorial District’s seat at the National Assembly come 2015.

Sources said Wike had at a time approached Amaechi to seek his permission to contest for the legislative seat. The governor was alleged to have initially consented to that idea, but suddenly changed his mind. Their relationship, according to insiders changed dramatically as soon as Amaechi told Wike he (Amaechi) was equally interested in the senatorial seat ahead 2015.

An associate of Amaechi, who refused to be identified, explained however that the matter is beyond an interest in a senatorial seat. He told The Nation that Wike is simply “interested in being used by the Presidency because it also served his interest. He is desperate to govern Rivers State without taking into cognizance the effect of the current rancour on the state.”

Reactions of Amaechi associates confirm claims that they were strongly rattled both by the Court’s rulings and Wike’s recent utterances that he would contest for the governorship seat of the state in 2015.

For example, Rivers State government, through its Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenatari, described the judgment as “an abuse of Court processes and a rape on judicial process.”

Other associates of Amaechi alleged that it was judicial robbery. Chairman of the Rivers Caucus in the House of Representatives, Asita Honorable, who addressed the press conference on behalf of its members, said they would explore all available legal means to reverse the judgment.

The Publicity Secretary of the outgoing executives, George Okwuoma Nwogba, was also quoted as saying they would appeal the judgment.

Also, local government chairmen elected on the platform of PDP in the State have vowed not to recognize or work with Obuah-led Rivers PDP Executives. The council chairmen under the aegis of Association of Local Government Council of Nigeria, ALGON, said at a press conference in Port Harcourt that it would not accept or condone any illegal executive council foisted upon them. The association through its Chairman, Chimbiko Akarolo, described the decision of the Abuja High Court as a “bad luck to democracy in Rivers State and Nigeria”.

With this kind of sentiment, the political texture of Rivers State is becoming more worrisome and complicated by the day, even as Amaechi and President Jonathan’s battle for the soul of Nigerian Governors Forum also remains unresolved.

This explains the concern expressed by citizens over the political fortunes of the state ahead of 2015. With Wike now reportedly announcing his determination to contest the governorship race under the platform of PDP, notwithstanding the fact that such ambition will puncture what has been described as existing zoning structure, it appears the Rivers State’s political puzzle may still require some unforeseen interventions to be resolved.
