FCT approves N30.9b for school rehabilitation

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has approved N30.9 billion for the massive school rehabilitation in the federal capital.

Mandate Secretary, Education Secretariat, FCT Administration, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, stated this at a news conference in Abuja.

According to Hayyo, the gesture is a testament to the priority the minister placed on the education sector.

He said out of the fund, N13.3 billion was approved for the renovation and rehabilitation of 40 schools, which would be completed in 100 days.

The mandate secretary said N13.1 billion was also provided for an accelerated whole-school rehabilitation approach, beginning with 18 schools.

Hayyo said the school rehabilitation approach was designed to rehabilitate the entire school infrastructure and facilities including toilets, hostels, dining as well as provision of furniture and water.

He said four schools would also be renovated in the second batch of the whole-school rehabilitation approach at the cost of N4.5 billion.

He listed the schools to include Government Science Technical College, Kwali; Government Science Technical College, Maitama; Government Secondary School, Kuje and Government Secondary School, Wuse II.

According to him, the projects are expected to be completed before May 2024, adding that it would be part of the project that would be commissioned by President Bola Tinubu to mark his one year in office.

The mandate secretary also commended the minister for addressing the lingering crisis between primary school teachers and the Area Council Secretariat.

He explained that the minister has committed to settle 40 per cent of the N7 billion minimum wage arrears owed the primary school teacher by the six area councils.

Hayyo said the area councils would settle the remaining 60 per cent of the amount, which would be paid within the next three months.

He said the amount to be paid by the area councils would be deducted from source to ensure compliance.

Hayyo, who assured that necessary procurement procedures would be followed, complained that the renovations were massive because the previous administration did not do much in the sector.

“The previous administration neglected the education sector. No meaningful intervention by the previous administration in the education sector of the FCT.

“That is why the huge work is going to be done by the current administration. That is why the minister took education as a serious matter and earmarked about N30 billion,” he added.

  • We want Wike in APC – Tony Okocha

We want Wike in APC – Tony Okocha

Recently the mantle of leadership of the crisis-ridden All Progressives Congress (APC) in River State fell on Sir Tony Chinedu Okocha, a one-time Chief of Staff of Chief Rotimi Amaechi and former Executive Assistant to Chief Nyesom Wike. After two months on the saddle of party leadership, he shared insights with select journalists into happenings in the party in the oil-rich River State. JIDE ORINTUNSIN reports.

How has been the journey so far since your committee was inaugurated?

We were inaugurated about two months and a few days ago, precisely 24th November, last year. I can say so far so good. It has not been easy taking the party from the ruins, struggling to reposition and reengineer the entire process for it to qualify to be called a political party instead of the hitherto social club. It has not been a walk into the park, but we are footing the bill.

Can you enumerate those obstacles, finance, mobilisation, and others?

One would have thought that after our inauguration, something would have been advanced to the party, at least to get an office, some stationery and to get to work, but that was not what we saw.

We had a party secretariat in Rivers state and two days after our inauguration, we visited the office and received by the Admin Secretary who was acting against the intentions of the hitherto leadership. He conducted us round the offices that were opened because some of the occupiers left with the keys. We assured them that we were one family and not there to witch-hunt anybody.

Coming the next day to resume work, we noticed that the place was locked and all attempts to open it that day failed. We were served a letter from a lawyer,   informing us that we were not qualified to be there and that the party owed unpaid rent in arrears of two years.

They specifically told us that the place was no longer available and that we should come back to renegotiate. It opened a new page for us because we cannot run the party from our homes. To the glory of God, we have the finest office after the Abuja headquarters. We were able to acquire a storey building housing eight offices with very expansive halls to hold any kind of meeting.

The environment is very conspicuous along the road and far better than what we had before. As of now, we are still struggling to fix some of the offices. With the good accommodation, we are on course. We have also started receiving, in droves, defectors and decampees into the party, including the 27 State House of Assembly members that ported to join our party, the APC, recently and have become part of what we are doing.

What is the relationship of your committee with the dissolved APC state executive?

There is no relationship because somehow they seem to be wallowing in their self-deceit, thinking or believing that something else will happen, but looking at the entire scenario, APC Rivers state has one nationally recognised chairman, which is I.

I don’t know where they draw their strength from and like I said, not even a piece of paper was handed over to us.

Have you been able to visit Rotimi Amaechi since you took over, at least to know his status in the party, considering your relationship with him?

My answer is an emphatic no, I have not done that. Both of us are Ikwerre, and even though we are not from the same village, our cultures are the same. Truth be told, our relationship has gone so sour even before he aspired to be the presidential candidate of the party. It was not because of money or interests in our lives, but because, in his totalitarian attitude, the party became a social club.

It was bad that the party didn’t even field candidates for elections and where we managed to do, they wanted to withdraw. It is about weakness, not any other thing. I have told them that it is not going to be business as usual because the APC they saw yesterday is not the one under me that they are seeing today. We are going to participate in the election in all the wards. We will not only contest but contest to win.

The soured relationship got to a crescendo during the presidential election because they felt that I should have supported my boss having served as his Chief of Staff previously. But I was on the side of Asiwaju. His problem is that he has no time to listen to his followers because he is arrogant, nobody means anything to him and he wants everything to be at his whims and caprices.

Again, he announced to his followers to vote against Asiwaju. I did not bother to find out his status in the party because we have members of the caretaker committee who are from his camp. It is also completely wrong to claim that we are trying to shut his camp out.

The caretaker committee didn’t come from only one faction. Don’t forget that three groups came to the national headquarters and each of the groups expressed their side of the story. There is no way anyone can emasculate the other. And the Chairman kept emphasising one thing to the point of alliterating that there is no peace in the state party.

The seven-man group is an amalgam of the three groups. I wasn’t from the Amaechi group, my secretary and the PRO all came from the Amaechi faction. The truth is that they shot themselves in the foot because pride goes before a fall. They feel reluctant to identify with us.

I believe in the philosophy of the more the merrier. I am not willing to sacrifice three persons to go in search of one big man. And I am not the shepherd Jesus Christ referred to in the Bible that left 99 sheep in search of one missing sheep.

The risk is that it is possible that before you come back from your search, the other 99 may have derailed. I am not ruling out the possibility of reaching out to Amaechi but it must be gradual and rule-bound. I will not be stampeded into going to search for one big man.

Will Gov. Fubara joining the APC bring the desired peace in Rivers State?

I don’t know what you mean by that and I don’t know how to answer you, but take it this way. Governor Fubara was the candidate of the PDP and his joining the APC is not the problem.

The problem is that there is already a scare in the relationship that appeared cordial but was a decoy and some kind of subterfuge. There is that scheme to outsmart the other person. It has opened a scare and if he joins the APC, what will he possibly tell the State Assembly members?

He is not just sincere especially about the terms of agreement in the peace brokered by Mr President. In one breath he will probate and reprobate at the same time. He comes out to say that he is doing something but behind he will be doing another thing entirely.

For example, we know that he has resubmitted the names of the Commissioners who resigned, but we are also aware that he will not be in any hurry to swear them in. However, the one that will hold him at the jugular is the issue of re-presenting the budget. But, as far as we are concerned, the state budget has not been presented.

From his insincere actions, it is that the matter will continue because he cannot run the state without a budget. And there is no budget in the eyes of the law. So, if he joins the APC because he is scared, it is not as if he wants to join but to save his job.

His entry into APC, for me as the chairman, is what I am praying for. We want them to have more crises so that we can populate our party. That was how they benefitted from APC in 2015. Some were anti-party, and others defected.

It cannot be said that his entry into the APC will solve the problem. It will not. What will solve the problem is that he must obey the dictates of that proclamation that he willingly accepted in the presence of Mr President.

He made a statement that day, thanking Mr President for his intervention. He promised to do every part of the resolution. He even announced another day that the proclamation document is not a death sentence. But, the elders, crying more than the bereaved, said that it was a death sentence.

He is the one funding them from behind. So, for us to have relative, not absolute peace in Rivers State, the governor must show sincerity. Don’t say one thing during the day and another at night. It will not work.

Why did you want the status quo maintained by the governor and you are not compelling the defected State Assembly members to return to the PDP?

Incidentally, it was not among the requests that the governor made. After reading the proclamation document before the President, he made only one request that those who fought along his path should not be victimised. One of the persons, who came with him, Adokie Amasiemeka, had requested that the lawmakers should return to the PDP.

But, the President laughed and said that it was a case of telling his children who left Egypt and crossed the Red Sea to return to Egypt again. If you were the one and remembering that we have had these huge rich harvests, would you ask them to go back? The good thing is that there was no iota of duress mounted on Governor Fubara.

What is your reply to those claiming that you are Wike’s puppet?

What is wrong with that? I don’t owe anybody any apology. There is nothing wrong with that. The man you are talking about is the person who helped APC to win the presidential election.

APC would not have won the presidential election in Rivers state if not because of Wike. We lost almost all the legislative seats but won the presidential. Wike is the magic wand. He has the minder’s touch and till tomorrow, like or hate him, his name politically cures malaria.

Those saying that he is stroking fire in the PDP should know that the party is already like a fuji house of commotion. The problem of the PDP is just ego. They are the architect of their problem in failing to manage the leadership crisis that rocked the party during the general elections last year. The party is still in serious crisis to date.

What do you tell those claiming that Wike is now a mole in PDP and morally, financially, and psychologically in APC, and how soon will he join the APC?

I have taken to the podium and even the streets a million times to beg Wike to come to the APC. I have used the words, come to Macedonia and help us. We have been begging him to come to the APC.

He is the magician and the dean of politics of Rivers State. He is the grandmaster as of today. And having defeated everybody back to back, he is the champion. How many lions can someone kill before they can be called a lion killer?

On the claims that he is psychologically and every other thing in APC and a mole in PDP, I will say that people are entitled to their opinion. Wike has never attended any APC meetings. He is also not the only person from the opposition party that is in the federal cabinet. All I can say is that he got the reward for the impact he made in helping APC win the presidential election in Rivers State.

Why has it become too difficult to bring Wike and Amaechi to a reconciliation table?

Only God can help us. All those attempts have been made in the past. Incidentally, all of us are from the same Ikwerre tribe and this issue has been discussed at a larger forum of pan-ethnic organisation, Ogbako Ikwerre, which is an umbrella body of Ikwerre sons and daughters.

The leadership of the body has waded into it but as I said, pride goes before a fall. Amaechi may not want to cave in because he remembers when he was Wike’s boss and even when Wike became the governor, Amaechi still sees him as his boy while Wike wants him to realise that status has changed.

The attempts did not work because of political interest. We strongly believe that only God’s intervention can bring peace between them and make reconciliation possible in their lifetime.

Why would you have a soft spot for Magnus Abe returning to APC but trying to foreclose Amaechi?

I have earlier told you the charge the party’s national chairman gave to the Caretaker committee. The summary of it is to reunite members and get the parties more robust to win the election. The President is of APC. We want to win an election in Rivers State. Rivers, Lagos, and Kano are key states to win elections for any party. Our doors are open.

But my worry with Magnus Abe, who is my friend, is the same issue I raised earlier about pride going before a fall. He felt undone just like all of us and we fought intellectually trying to cripple the Amaechi group. It paid off on time because we supported Tinubu, who eventually won.

We were not delegates during the primary, according to the constitution of the party, but after Tinubu’s emergence as the party’s presidential candidate, I told my friend Magnus Abe that we had struck gold because there was no way President Tinubu would want to do something in Rivers without recourse to us that supported him.

After the victory Magnus visited and told me that he wanted to run for the governorship. I discouraged him because Amaechi had foisted Cole as the APC governorship candidate on the people and there was nothing he could do again. I told him that yes, we had a case in court but it was watery.

After consultation, he left the APC despite the attempts from many quarters to discourage him.  He formally resigned his membership of the APC. He joined the SDP and became the governorship candidate of the party. In his bid for reconciliation and return to the APC, he is making our job easy, but he is using the wrong approach. He ought to look at what the party constitution stipulates about becoming a member of the party.

It did not say the person should start from the national level. Joining the party must start from the ward and if there is no ward like in the case we have now, the person should come to us, the caretaker committee.

Magnus Abe has been junketing from one radio station to television station announcing that he has re-joined our party and I ask how. I am now beginning to see sinister motives. However, we will discuss it because Magnus has value to add.

Wike to informants: you will die like kidnappers

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to informants of kidnappers, bandits and criminals to repent of their evil deeds or end up dying in the hands of security operatives.

Wike gave the warning on Saturday at a town hall security meeting in Kuje town in Kuje Area Council of the territory.

The Minister also urged residents of the Area Council to play their role in providing relevant information that would help security agencies.

He said: “We are going to tackle insecurity head-on. These bandits and criminals, their time is up. I know some of the criminal informants are here listening to me and if you are an informant, you will die the same way those people you are informing will die.

“You have the opportunity of repenting today or else you are gone. Nobody will pity you. You have seen what the security agencies have been doing in the past few days. That is to show to you that it is not busy as usual.

“Be fully aware that we are ready for you. I told the Chairman to make sure that the vigilance groups are empowered and we must do it well. They must be profiled and the security agencies must know them. And to the residents, give us information. You must work with the security agencies and provide them with information.

“Do not be afraid. I have seen this problem before, and I will tackle it. Let me assure you that no amount of blackmail will stop us from carrying out our assignment”.

Wike also expressed shock at the state of roads in Kuje Area Council, vowing that he will revisit the Council’s file and construct motorable roads for the the people.

He said: “This is my first time of coming to Kuje, and I couldn’t believe that the major roads are not constructed. They say God’s time is the best, God’s time has come for you. I will go back and revisit the file. Be assured that you will see changes in this Area Council.

“Today, we will go back and take those projects and complete them for you. It is not that we are doing you any good, you are entitled to it. We are not doing anything extraordinary. It is our job and we will be faithful to it”.

Wike’s security interventions reducing crimes in Abaji – Chairman

Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, Chairman, Abaji Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says security interventions by the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, are reducing kidnappings and other criminal activities in the area.

Abdullahi stated this during a security town hall organised by the Office of the Minister in collaboration with the Abaji Area Council, in Abaji on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was organised for the minister to interact with residents of the area to find a lasting solution to insecurity in the federal capital.

The council chairman said that before the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, Abaji was experiencing constant kidnappings and other criminal activities.

He blamed part of the challenge on the location of the area, sharing boundaries with Niger, Kogi and Nasarawa states.

He, however, said that the proactiveness of the current administration and Wike’s security interventions  have played critical roles in turning the tide around.

“By the special grace of God, the current administration has reduced these ugly activities to a minimal level and today, we are experiencing considerable peace and security.

“We must also appreciate our security agencies, traditional institutions, religious bodies, youth and voluntary organisations for their immense support and contribution in ensuring considerable peace,” he said.

The council boss also commended the FCT Minister for initiating the construction of a five kilometre road each, in the six area councils as part of rural development efforts.

“This has proved our disposition that FCT is in safe and competent hands,” he said.

He appealed for a military checkpoint in Yaba town and an upgrade of Gawun Police Station into a full Divisional Police Station with additional manpower.

Other requests by the chairman include additional vehicles and logistics for security agencies and completion of abandoned roads and other projects in the area.

On his part, the Ona of Abaji, Alhaji Adamu Yunusa, commended Wike for the relentless service to the residents of FCT, particularly on improving security and other development projects.

While commending the improved security being recorded in the area so far, the traditional leader appealed for the establishment of army barracks in Abaji.

He appealed to the Minister to ensure the completion and take-off of the proposed University of Science and Technology, Abaji.

Yunusa thanked President Tinubu for appointing a well-experienced politician, Mr Wike, to manage the affairs of the FCT as the minister.

Responding, Wike granted most of the requests, except for the University of Science and Technology, which he said was being looked into.

He urged the residents to support the government to address insecurity and sustain the relative peace being enjoyed in the area and FCT in general.

The minister called for the support of residents and community structure to support security agencies with valuable information to foil criminal acts.

“We believe that interacting with you will give you that confidence that the government is with you, the government will not forget you, and the government will work with you to see that these challenges are sorted out,” he said. (NAN)

    • Directs council chairmen to hold monthly security meetings

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has expressed displeasure with the rate of insecurity in the nation’s capital.

Wike said under his watch, no bail would be granted to kidnappers henceforth.

He mandated the chairmen of the six area councils of the FCT to hold mandatory monthly security meetings to improve the security situation in their respective councils.

Wike, who gave the directive during a security town hall meeting at Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in Abuja yesterday, asked to be notified if any chairman failed to hold the monthly security meeting.

According to him, any council chairman that does not hold monthly council security meeting is a threat to the security of the council.

“Gone are the days when kidnappers will be granted bail. I will not allow it again. We will ensure that the kidnapper is punished. How will a kidnapper be granted bail?

“Therefore, I will be calling meetings of all traditional leaders, meeting with all council chairmen and meeting with all security agencies.

“If there is no monthly meeting held in terms of security meeting in the councils, I should be aware, and I will hold that chairman responsible for any security breach.

“If you do your job, I do my job, traditional leaders do their own job and security agencies do their own job, we won’t have problems.

“But if you don’t do your own part, I don’t do my own part, he does not do his own part then we are bound to have security problems.”

He assured residents that the government would provide everything that security agencies require to help them to perform their duties.

He pointed out that some of the security agencies do not have the needed equipment and operational vehicles to perform optimally.

“They don’t have the needed logistics and communication gadgets, yet we want them to perform wonders, we want them to perform miracles.

“If they don’t have information, they will not perform miracles; if they don’t have information no wonders would be performed,” Wike said.

The minister stressed the need for all stakeholders to work together and support security agencies to succeed.

“Ours is not to carry guns; ours is to provide information through the area councils, through our traditional rulers; and through my office, then to security agencies.

“When we give them information, they will take proactive actions,” he said.

He promised to construct a police station and some access roads as requested by the council’s chairman, Mr. Christopher Maikalangu.

Earlier, the Chief of Karshi, Alhaji Ismaila Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of traditional leaders at the meeting, called for working synergy between security leaders and community structures.

Mohammed warned politicians against provocative statements with respect to the security situation in the FCT.

“Please do not politicise the security situation in the FCT. Leave the security challenge out of your politics.

“God forbid, if there is a problem here, all of you will run back to your states. We don’t have anywhere to go. So please, don’t create problems for us here,” he pleaded.

The chief asked the minister to compel the council chairmen to hold the mandatory monthly peace and security meetings.

He explained that the meeting was supposed to be monthly where all the Divisional Police Officers, Area Commanders, Heads of Department of State Services meet to exchange security information.

The Chairman of AMAC, Maikalangu, said that insurgents’ activities in the neighbouring and other states had led to an upsurge in migration of people into the FCT as their safe haven.

This, according to him, had increased the rate of crime in rural communities and the city centre.

He applauded the minister for initiating the FCT Ministerial Taskforce, adding that the initiative was already yielding positive results.

Maikalangu pointed out that lack of access roads to some of the communities that became kidnappers’ hideouts, particularly Kabusa, Ketti, Gbawu, was compounding the security challenge in the area.

He appealed to the minister to support the construction of the access roads in the communities, including Ketti, Takushara, Burum, Gidan Kwano, Leka, Kutasa, for the good and safety of the people.

He also appealed for the establishment of a police division within the Takushara axis to provide security presence in all the surrounding communities.

The minister stressed the need for all stakeholders to work together and support security agencies to succeed.

“Our is not to carry guns; ours is to provide information through the area councils, through our traditional rulers; and through my office, then to security agencies.

“Please do not politicize the security situation in the FCT. Leave the security challenge out of your politics.

“God forbid, if there is a problem here, all of you will run back to your states. We don’t have anywhere to go, so please, don’t create problems for us here,” he pleaded.

The chief asked the minister to compel the council chairmen to hold the mandatory monthly peace and security meetings.

He explained that the meeting was supposed to be monthly where all the Divisional Police Officers, Area Commanders, Heads of Department of State Services meet to exchange security information.

The chairman of AMAC, Maikalangu, said that insurgents’ activities in the neighboring and other states, had led to an upsurge of migration of people into FCT as their safe haven.

This, according to him, had increased the rate of crime in rural communities and the city centre.

He applauded the minister for initiating the FCT Ministerial Taskforce, adding that the initiative was already yielding positive results.

Maikalangu pointed out that lack of access roads to some of the communities that became kidnappers’ hideouts, particularly Kabusa, Ketti, Gbawu was compounding the security challenge in the area.

He appealed to the minister to support the construction of the access roads in the communities including Ketti, Takushara, Burum, Gidan Kwano, Leka, Kutasa, for the good and safety of the people.

He also appealed for the establishment of a police division within the Takushara axis to provide security presence in all the surrounding communities.

Wike orders profiling of vigilance groups in Abuja over kidnapping, killings

Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Minister, Nyesom Wike on Wednesday, January 24, ordered full profiling of vigilance groups assisting security operatives in the nation’s capital.

Wike directed the six Area Council Chairmen to setup the process and ensure that each member of the group is profiled.

Speaking during a strategic security meeting with members of the FCT Council of Chiefs and the council chairmen, the minister said the Administration would continue to work with the traditional rulers in ensuring foolproof security for the nation’s capital.

He said: “We have asked all the Area Councils to set up vigilance teams and we believe that those vigilance teams won’t be the ones perpetrating the crimes. Therefore, they must be profiled so that they are known. Who are they? Are they from our communities? So that we won’t say we want to solve a problem and then cause another one. They (chairmen) will have to do that with you (traditional rulers).

“We have told the police and other security agencies to itemise all their needs and we are going to meet them so that our people can sleep comfortably with their eyes closed.

“We thought that there is a need to meet with you and the council chairmen so that we can work in synergy and be on the same page. If there are things you think we should do too, we are willing to partner with you so that the challenges we are facing now will be a thing of the past. You must work hard because insecurity is not written on anybody’s face. Anyone can be a victim and that is why we must do everything possible to ensure that our subjects are not victims of these criminals.

“We are not folding our hands we are not sleeping. We are working 24 hours round twh clock.

“Again, you would have heard that we are demolishing shanties. You know criminals won’t want to live in known houses. They commit crimes and run to shanties that can’t be easily traced. So, we will continue to demolish shanties. You need to support us. You don’t allow people to bring propaganda. There is nothing like that.”

Wike also reiterated his resolve to roll out buses in order to reduce the incidences of ‘one chance’ or taxi robberies.

“Very soon we are going to roll out our buses which will be painted in Abuja colours and we won’t allow taxis that are not painted in our colours to operate so that this issue of one chance can be eliminated.”

He said before President Bola Tinubu departed for France on Wednesday, he had asked him to inform the traditional rulers that government was doing all within its powers to secure the nation.

“We sincerely thank all of you for your concerns and efforts. Before Mr President departed this afternoon he said I should inform you that government is doing all within its powers to curb insecurity. Already, the government has shown strength. It has shown courage in fighting insecurity across the country.

“This is the FCT where many Nigerians want to come and stay and so we are more concerned because when the capital is threatened, the whole country is threatened. So, we are very serious with security. We are not sleeping. We are working 24 hours.

“We have met with the councils and we have told them the little we need which is information to be able to help security agencies that are directly involved in the fight against criminalities. Nobody would say there is anywhere in this world no matter how developed that has no form of insecurity or the other.

“The only difference is that it is either nipped in the bud or you are sure that if it happens the criminals are caught. But that is not an excuse for us. We are ready to ensure it doesn’t happen or when it happens, the perpetrators are arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.

“The president has given us series of approvals to make sure that security agencies are fully equipped to fight this crime and we cannot do this alone without your support. You have a role to play in securing your domains. You know those around your domain. If there are unfamiliar faces, you can let the council chairmen know, so as to report to my office so that actions can be taken.”

Responding, the Ona of Abaji and chairman, FCT Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa who said the minister was not new to governance or to Abuja, expressed optimism in his ability to turn around the fortunes of the territory.

“You are not new in Abuja and we trust you that you are going to change the story of Abuja by God’s grace.

“Continue with what you are doing and we are backing you”, the Ona said.

Kidnapping: Wike pledges positive news within days

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says residents of the territory will get positive news within days with regards to efforts being made to tackle insecurity in the FCT.

“I can assure you that in a matter of days, you will be hearing positive stories,” Wike told a townhall meeting in Kwali on Tuesday.

“We are ready to support our security agencies with whatever they need to ensure that our people can sleep with their two eyes closed.

“We are going to provide the councils with motorcycles to support the vigilante groups so that they can get information and assist our security agencies,” he added.

The minister directed chairmen of the six areas councils in the territory to strengthen and motivate local vigilante groups as part of measures to reinforce community policing.

Wike also asked the councils to procure more motorcycles for the vigilante groups, to enable them navigate difficult terrains while supporting security agencies.

He said that the FCT Administration would soon conclude the procurement processes for more operational vehicles to support security agencies in the discharge of their responsibilities.

“For me, whatever that is going to bring development or improve security, the government has no hesitation in doing it,” he said, adding that residents should support the security agencies with actionable information to address any security threat.

“We need information from you because without information, the security agencies would have little or nothing to do; if you give them information on time, they will make sure that bad things don’t happen,” Wike said.

On infrastructure, the minister promised to construct two roads in each of the six area councils, in addition to the ones being constructed.

The minister said that henceforth the FCT annual budget would rely on inputs from the people.

“Every year, before submitting any budget proposal to the National Assembly, I will meet with traditional rulers and the people to get their inputs.

“This is by way of getting them to recommend people-oriented projects that can be incorporated into the budget; we will not abandon you. We will make sure we develop the area councils.

“Before the end of the tenure of President Tinubu, you will see a lot of infrastructure going on in the area councils.”

Earlier, Kwali Area Council Chairman, Mr Danladi Chiya, appealed for the establishment of a police divisional office and military base in some parts of the area council.

Chiya also complained of bad roads, which according to him, have contributed to the rising insecurity in the area.

“The roads are not motorable, come to our aid to help put the roads in good shape. That will help reduce the incidences of kidnapping.

“We also require further military presence. We need more police stations especially in Gwako which has become a haven for these bad elements.

“We also need motorcycles for the vigilante groups. I have given them some, but we need more,” he said. (NAN)
