Stop stoking division against Fubara, Ijaws tells Wike

Pan Ijaws socio-political organisation, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has cautioned Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, against stoking division of any sort against Governor Simi Fubara under the guise  of protecting his “structure.”

It said the political structure which Wike referred to should not be rolled up with the structure of the administration of Governor Fubara as one entity under anyone’s thumb.

The INC said its organs across Ijawland and the diaspora should be alive to the sacred responsibility of watching over and protecting the interests of its people anywhere and anytime.

President of INC worldwide, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, in a statement made available in Akure, said the Ijaw nation, was dismayed by the crude attempt by men in official uniform to impeach and inflict mental and physical injuries on Governor Fubara.

Prof. Okaba saluted all Rivers people who joined their Ijaw brothers and sisters in defence of truth that Governor Fubara had committed no act by omission or commission, worthy of impeachment.

Okaba called on all political players in Rivers State to play their duty to their constituents and forthwith cease from any further acts capable of slurring the sanctity of the office, institution and person of the Governor of all Rivers People.

According to the statement, “We salute the patriotic sense of duty and calm responsibility exhibited by Governor Siminialayi Fubara, even in the face of insane taunting and provocation by those who do not wish Rivers State any good.

He said: “We specifically appeal to Chief Barr E.N Wike to retrace his steps from stoking division of any sort against the government of the day under the guise  of protecting his “structure”.

“We urge all our people to remain vigilant, steadfast and and continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and brotherhood in Rivers State, the Niger Delta and everywhere.”

    2027: I won’t run against Tinubu – Wike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, Friday, November 24, declared that he would not contest against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Wike reiterated his commitment to the success of the Tinubu administration even as he explained that the quest for justice was the key reason he and the G5 group of governors supported the presidential ambition of Tinubu.

According to the minister, good character should never be compromised on the alter of politics.

Wike spoke during a live broadcast in his office with selected journalists.

He pointed out that having worked for the emergence of Tinubu as president, and having been made minister of FCT, nothing would make him contest against the president in 2027.

The minister said: “Tinube made me the FCT minister and I won’t allow anybody to crumble our political structure. No!

“Tinubu made me minister, poeple don’t understand, I have character. What will happen in 2027? I stood and I said I’m not going to support injustice. I was threatened and some poeple said they will do me this and that. They tried many options including using major Generals.”

Asked for update on his face-off with Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State, Wike who initially said he didn’t want to talk about the matter, later said: “Give a man power and money, that is when you will know the person. If you have not given a man power and money, don’t say you know the person.

“He may be your friend, he may be your son, sister or mother or father. I don’t want to go into that.”

Wike lamented that Fubara could seek to destroy the structure which produced him as governor just within three months of his emergence as governor.

He said: “In three months, it is sad for someone to scatter a political structure that supported and bring you up.

You know what is painful?  All these allegations, I smile. Who and who sat with him. In all your doings, be grateful in your life no matter the circumstance. Nobody who is a gentleman and a politician will support this kind of thing.”

On his achievements as governor of Rivers State, wike said: “I was paying pensioner’s gratuity every month which were not paid by my predissersor. I took River State to the level where you cannot discuss politics in Nigeria without Rivers State.

I was an ordinary minister when I became a governor. I challenged the siting governor and I defeated his candidate. I worked hard.”

On the new requirements for acquisition of land in the Federal Capital Territory particularly the introduction of National Identity Number (NIN) and Biometric Verification Number (BVN) to Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), the minister said the new features were for security and revenue generation.

Wike also noted that existing landowners in the capital must get recertification to incorporate these new features.

“There are a lot of discrepancies, a lot of cloning of C-of-Os, so we have come up with an idea that every allottee who seeks and applies for a C-of-O must supply his NIN; this is one of the features we are going to put in the new C-of-O,” he said.

“If a corporate body doesn’t have an NIN and they have a property, they must put their BVN. So many persons have not registered, and this will make them go and re-register.”

Addressing the issue of existing landlords with C-of-Os, Wike stated that they would only be required to pay a nominal fee for recertification.

“For everyone who has a C-of-O, they will come for a recertification, so that we can incorporate the NIN or BVN,” he said.

“Those who had a C-of-O before don’t need to pay money again; the highest they can pay is N50,000, and corporate bodies will pay N100,000. It helps in terms of security; it also helps to improve our revenue generation.”

“There are people who own seven properties, so this will identify them so they can pay taxes.”

Wike further stated that other benefits of this initiative are in identifying property owners accurately for tax purposes.

Wike warns against encroachment on school lands in FCT

The minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has warned residents against encroaching on school lands, saying the development would not be tolerated under his administration.

He said this is also to guard against the breakdown of law and order in the FCT.

Wike gave the warning on Thursday, November 23, following an on-the-spot assessment of the teaching and learning condition at the LEA Primary School, Bagusa, a village in the Dei Dei community of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

The school which was established by the past administration had about 200 pupils and 16 desks, spread across six different classes, including a creche.

Wike, who spoke through the Mandate Secretary of Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo, also pledged the immediate building of classrooms for the pupils as well as a junior secondary school to ensure the easy transition of final year pupils to the next level.

He said the secretariat had received reports about the existence of the school and the plight of pupils, hence his decision to embark on a physical assessment to ascertain the immediate and long-term needs of the school.

In the interim, Dr Hayyo said the secretariat is committed to addressing the underlying issues that led to the unacceptable situation at the school.

He said: “We came for an inspection of this school because we learned that the school was established here by the previous administration. After the establishment of the school, there was no single structure provided by the previous administration.

“So, it came to our notice when we saw a report in one of the newspapers, so the Minister of FCT directed us to come and inspect the school so that the minister will see how he can intervene so that the school will look very nice and the children will learn in a very conducive environment.

“The Minister has directed that I come and supervise the school so that in no time, construction will commence in this school.

“We are going to convert the school from the current structure to a new modern structure where both the primary and the junior secondary school will be constructed here so that the pupils will learn from Primary One to six in a conducive environment. Again, at the same time, from Junior Secondary School one to three in this premises. We are going to complete it, and then we are going to construct a new block of four classrooms through the Universal Basic Education Commission UBEC intervention through their counterpart funding of 2023.

“The FCT minister has also directed the construction of an additional one block of four classrooms. So JSS one, JSS two, and JSS three will continue from here. We will work tirelessly to enhance infrastructure and ensure that no child’s education is compromised by inadequate facilities or unsafe conditions.”

The highly elated Head Teacher of the school, Chebawaza Alfred Shawo Katungu said was almost losing hope of any government intervention until Wike assumed office as Minister.

On his part, the Chief of Bagusa village, Zakka Iyah thanked the minister for his intervention, saying for years, his people had been looking forward to a turnaround in the fortunes of the school.

Rivers will support Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, says Fubara

The Rivers state governor, Siminalayi Fubara has told the new board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) that his administration would support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Fubara vowed to collaborate and support the NDDC’s efforts to speed up the development of the region.

The governor spoke at the Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt when members of the NDDC Governing Board, led by their Chairman, Chiedu Ebie, paid him a visit.

A statement signed on Thursday, November 23, by Fubara’s special assistant on media, Boniface Onyedi, named other board members, who visited Fubara as the Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Alabo Boma Iyaye; the Executive Director Projects, Sir. Victor Antai; the Executive Director of Corporate Services, Ifedayo Abegunde, among others.

Fubara said: “I am very happy that you have done the right thing by paying this courtesy visit. I assure you that we are ready to collaborate with all Federal Government agencies committed to the development of the Niger Delta region.

“The speech of the Chairman, Mr. Ebie, shows that NDDC has already identified more than 90 per cent of the problems facing the region and is ready to solve them.

“The Rivers State Government will support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to bring hope to the people of the state and Niger Delta region.

“We are going to support you to enable you to discharge your duties and I pray that your tenure will record more successes than the previous boards.”

The governor advised the commission to avoid duplication of projects, adding that it was very necessary to consult the states before embarking on projects in their respective territories.

He said that by identifying project duplication as a problem, the NDDC had shown that it was ready to address the challenge, which he said had caused some friction between the states and the commission.

Fubara assured the NDDC board members that his government was open to partnership and collaboration in the execution of projects and urged the commission to embark on projects that would add value to the lives of the people of the region.

In his earlier remarks, the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Chiedu Ebie, thanked the Rivers government for hosting the commission since its inception in 2000.

He said: “The NDDC Board was inaugurated on November 16. As our host governor, we thought it wise to pay you this courtesy visit before holding our inaugural meeting.

“We need to create a new life in the NDDC and collaborate more with development partners, including the state governments and other stakeholders in the region to achieve our objectives.

“I know that we have had problems with duplication of projects. Henceforth, representatives of the states in the NDDC Board must be in constant touch with their state governments and ensure that projects are based on needs assessment.”

The NDDC chairman assured the governor that the new board would work in synergy with governors in the nine states covered by the commission.

Tinubu’s administration will be practical in governance – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, November 22, disclosed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration would be practical and not theoretical in his approach to governance.

Wike also expressed hope that ongoing road construction projects in the FCT will be completed in 2024, to mark the first-year anniversary of President Tinubu in office.

The minister said this following his inspection of ongoing construction on the Outer Southern Expressway, beginning from AA Rano behind the Villa through Deeper Life Junction, SARS, Apo Roundabout to Wassa; under construction by Messrs CGC Construction Limited, and the Northern N20 Expressway beginning from AA Rano and stretching to Zuba; being constructed by Gilmor Construction.

The minister, who expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done so far, noted that construction work had been suspended on both roads before his assumption of office, arising from challenges with sourcing funds to carry out the construction.

He said: “When I came on board, these roads were abandoned, and I had to invite the contractors, and then we sat down, and we agreed on a way of funding. I am happy that it has worked out very well, and the contractors have assured us that these roads will be constructed on time, and we believe that by the special grace of God, it is one of those projects earmarked for one year in office for Mr. President.

The minister said: “The contractors have done very well, very quality jobs, I commend them, and I still appeal to them not to lower standard, because at the end of the day, they will still come back to repeat and make sure that things are done well. I believe in them, and the other jobs they are doing, they have also assured us that they are going to complete them”.

Wike also hinted that arrangements had been made to get more funding for the completion of the projects, reiterating that he would rather not approve a project than award a project without funds or have to suspend the project due to lack of funds.

Wike said: “For me, we have made arrangements for funding. Mr. President has said severally that he doesn’t want to hear excuses. He has given that directive, and they have approved the Supplementary budget, and we believe that any moment from now, we will receive further funding, which will be channelled to most of these projects, so we won’t hear complaints about no funding.

“I am not going to embark on any project where we know we have no funding; it does not make any sense. No project will be awarded where we know we have no funds. And even when there are funds, and it is not enough, I will not embark on such projects, so that we don’t need to suffer the people.”

    • Minister targets next May to complete VP’s residence

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has said he saved N110 billion for the territory’s administration in three months.

The minister said this when he held a high-level meeting with estate developers yesterday in Abuja.

“I have saved N110 billion for FCTA since my assumption of officer three months ago,” he said.

The minister also spoke about his experience when he was Rivers State governor and needed Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for his land in Abuja and what he has seen since assumption of office as the FCT minister.

He said: “Allocation of lands to three more persons will no longer be allowed. The C of O enables you to do business. When we take the right decision, some people will be happy, some will not. We are ready for such a fight.

“When I was governor of Rivers State, three C of Os were given by the FCTA on my land and we later discovered that the C of Os given to us were fake, after we has paid N57 million for the lands.

“I will seek Mr. President’s permission to link any C of O to NIN. The rich men will kick against it, but anything that will help our people must be done.

“Support this move. You will attest to the fact that there are changes. How will you feel that at the end of the day you have a C of O but it is fake? Over 10 years, some people have not paid now; the N5 million looks big to them.

“Do you know that FCTA workers salary is N8.9 billion monthly? I was shocked about this. The 2024 national budget of the FCT is N17 billion.

“We are trying to provide a city that we are to be proud of. We have considered that we will spread it by four months to pay the N5 million.”

The minister commended Julius Berger for the commitment toward completing the project by moving to site without the necessary mobilisation from the government.

He said that although the contractor had insisted that the contract sum be revised from N7 billion to N15 billion because of rising cost of materials, President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to complete the project.

He promised to make the needed funds available before December to ensure completion of the project, adding that he has already secured the approval of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

“Put everything you have so that we can achieve this; so that all the stories about abandoned projects will be a thing of the past,” Wike said.

Earlier, Mr Shehu Ahmed, Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), said that the project as captured in the Abuja Master Plan was awarded in 2010.

The Director of Public Building, FCDA, Mr Adebowale Ademo, explained that the main building has three different living rooms on the ground floor, and also the Vice President Private Room and conveniences.

Wike reviews land swap initiative, investigates sales of federal houses

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has taken steps to review the Abuja land swap initiative and investigate the sale of federal government houses in the FCT.

Wike disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday, when he asked the Task Force on the issuance of Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for mass housing to review initiative.

The minister also asked the task force to ascertain the sales of federal government houses in the federal capital, Abuja, and present the current position of things.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the minister had on Nov. 14, inaugurated a Task Force on the issuance of C of O for mass housing and the recovery of land use contravention fees.

The minister, who asked the task force to conclude the assignment within one month, extended the completion period to two months considering the additional tasks.

The land swap initiative means engaging the private sector to provide infrastructure in exchange for land.

The goal is essentially to open up new districts in the FCT by constructing and completing access roads to the districts.

Wike said that stakeholders have raised a lot of concerns about the initiative, stressing the need to review it.

He directed the task force to review the agreements and other documents with relevant information about the initiative.

“We want to get details of the land swap initiative and the sale of federal government houses in the Federal Capital Territory.

“There are so many complaints that some houses are abandoned, while some are sold.

“Let us know the houses that were sold and where are the documents? Let them show us the receipt of payments.

“Not only the federal government houses but also the houses built and abandoned in the city.

“With the additional responsibility, the task force will now last for two months instead of the one month earlier given,” Wike said.
