Yoruba Wikipedia hits 25 million views in 2023

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia and the 7th most visited website on the internet. The encyclopedia is the largest and most-read reference work in history. Its contents are written by a community of volunteers across the world who are known as “Wikipedians” or “editors.”

The English-language Wikipedia, which is the most popular language version of Wikipedia, has more than six million articles, and Wikipedia exists in more than 300 languages, including Yoruba.

The Yoruba language version of Wikipedia is called “Yoruba Wikipedia”, and its domain name is “yo.wikipedia.org.”

While the Yoruba Wikipedia was created in October 2002, its contents were largely written by non-native speakers of the Yoruba language prior to 2018. This is due to a lack of editors who are native speakers of Yoruba.

In 2012, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales recognised the contributions of one Yoruba Wikipedia editor, Demmy, and named him Wikipedian of the Year for creating a bot to translate 15,000 short English Wikipedia articles into Yoruba Wikipedia.

The readership level of Yoruba Wikipedia was very low at the time, as there were not enough contents for its readers, and the available contents were of low quality. As of 2015, the Yoruba Wikipedia was read 6,878,222 times.

On August 3, 2019, the Affiliation Committee of the Wikimedia Foundation that hosts and operates Wikipedia recognised the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, a group of Yoruba language Wikipedia editors that are committed to developing, improving, and promoting Yoruba language Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects that are related to the Yoruba Wikimedia projects.

As of the time of the recognition of this group, the Yoruba Wikipedia had been read 12,824,420 times. This could be attributed to the contributions of this group of editors prior to their recognition. The readership level of Yoruba Wikipedia continues to increase steadily following its recognition.

In 2020, the readership level increased to 15,623,531, followed by 16,931,921 in 2021 and 20,330,113 in 2022. In 2023, the Yoruba Wikipedia recorded 25,217,471 views, making the Yoruba Wikipedia the most read Nigerian language Wikipedia and the most visited website in Yoruba.

This milestone could be attributed to the immense contributions of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group and other volunteer members of the Yoruba Wikipedia community.

The group has implemented several strategic projects to create awareness for Yoruba Wikipedia. This includes a radio program on Bond FM (92.9 F.M) and Radio Lagos (107.5 FM).

The Yoruba Wikimedians User Group has also collaborated with Mr. Macaroni, a multi-award-winning Nigerian comic skit maker and actor with millions of followers on various social media, to produce a short comic skit to promote the Yoruba language on Wikipedia.

The skit was viewed by millions of Nigerians. These efforts, among others, have helped to increase the traffic and readership level of Yoruba Wikipedia.

As of February 15, 2024, Yoruba Wikipedia has a total of 33,745 articles and 110 active editors (editors who contribute to Yoruba Wikipedia regularly).

According to Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, “the closest thing we have to a Prime Directive” is to “imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That’s what we’re doing.”

Wales has described Wikipedia as “an effort to create and distribute a free encyclopedia of the highest possible quality to every single person on the planet in their own language.”.

Wikipedia in all languages is supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, which provides the infrastructure and supports its user groups, chapters, and thematic groups.

Why do many Nigerians fail the Wikipedia notability criteria?

    By Isaac Olatunde

Wikipedia is the largest online encyclopedia in human history, with millions of articles written by thousands of volunteers across the globe. While anyone can edit Wikipedia and contribute to the encyclopedia, they are encouraged to follow the accepted standard that all editors should normally follow. These accepted standards are documented as policies and guidelines on Wikipedia.

One of these guidelines is the notability guideline. The notability guideline is one of the core content guidelines on Wikipedia. This guideline requires that the subject of a Wikipedia article be sufficiently notable to merit a Wikipedia article. This is because Wikipedia articles only cover notable topics. That is, those that have gained significant attention over a period of time.

These attentions are often gauged by multiple independent, reliable sources that have significantly covered the topic. Reliable sources include, but are not limited to, newspaper articles with editorial oversight, journals, academic and peer-reviewed publications, scholarly monographs, and textbooks are the most reliable sources. These secondary sources are often independent of the subject of the article. While blogs and user-generated social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and related platforms are considered unreliable and cannot be used to gauge global attention,

Oftentimes, popular people in Nigeria, including celebrities, have their articles deleted from Wikipedia. Although, there are several reasons why a biography article may be deleted from Wikipedia, and one of these reasons, and arguably the most common, is that the subject of the article does not meet Wikipedia’s notability criteria.

It is important to recognize that popularity is not the same as notability. One can be popular without being notable or be notable but still not meet Wikipedia’s notability criteria.

Celebrities are individuals who are widely recognised and often well-known in society or public eyes, typically due to their achievements, talent, or public presence in areas such as entertainment, sports, politics, or other fields.

This means that celebrities are popular people, but whether they meet Wikipedia’s notability criteria for an article is often determined by the amount and quality of reliable sources that have covered them extensively over a period of time. By their nature, celebrities are not automatically notable for a Wikipedia article.

Wikipedia has general notability guidelines and subject-specific notability guidelines. A celebrity may not meet the general notability guideline but still meet the subject-specific guidelines and sometimes both could be met.

Anita Natasha Akide, popularly known as Tacha’s biography, was deleted at least two times. Even though she was popular in Nigeria, she failed to meet Wikipedia’s notability criteria. Most of the sources provided to support her notability were published interviews she granted. Unfortunately, Wikipedia does not consider interview publications reliable because they are not entirely independent of the subject by nature.

Officer Woos, a comedian who often dresses in police uniforms, had his biography deleted from Wikipedia for a similar reason. In his case, he was mostly covered by blogs, with only a handful of coverage in newspapers, and those in the newspapers were largely interviews he granted.

There are numerous celebrities whose biography articles have been deleted from Wikipedia because they fail to meet the notability criteria.

One may wonder how difficult it is for Nigerian celebrities to meet Wikipedia’s notability criteria. The truth is that Nigerian celebrities could easily meet Wikipedia’s notability criteria if they allowed enough time for them to be significantly covered in the media. This way, a Wikipedia editor with no conflict of interest will notice them and write about them on Wikipedia. But if they do not allow enough time to pass and hire a paid editor to write about them, especially when they are yet to gain sufficient media attention that covers them in detail, the article is most likely going to be deleted.

Wikipedia has no firm rules. While Wikipedia has policies and guidelines, they are not rocket science; their content and interpretation can evolve over time. However, there are thousands of volunteers who are working from Nigeria to ensure adequate coverage of Nigeria-related contents on Wikipedia, and when any celebrity becomes notable, they will be noticed by one or more of these volunteers, who will write about them without any inducement or instruction to do so.
