  • AFCON 2019: Zaha sends Cote d’Ivoire into last eight

Wilfried Zaha gave the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire a 1-0 win over Mali in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) round of 16 match on Monday in Suez.

Mali dominated most of the game however and missed a flurry of chances.

Zaha, who had barely featured in the match until that point, took advantage as Mali got into a terrible mess from a Cote d’Ivoire goal kick in the 76th minute.

That was enough to earn his side a barely deserved win and quarter-final tie against Algeria.

Mali, unbeaten in the group stage, had played with verve and skill as they took their southern neighbours apart in the first half.

Moussa Djenepo and Abdoulaye Diaby caused all sorts of trouble down the flanks and Moussa Marega was a constant threat in attack.

But, as they began to tire after around an hour, Cote d’Ivoire came back into the game.

Jonathan Kodjia missed gilt-edged chance when he was one-on-one with goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, but Zaha was not so forgiving minutes later.

  • Crystal Palace rout Leicester 4-1

Crystal Palace piled further pressure on Leicester City manager Claude Puel on Saturday with a comprehensive 4-1 English Premier League (EPL) win over his team.

Puel have now gone seven games without a victory.

Two goals from Wilfried Zaha, another from Michy Batshuayi and a penalty kick from Luka Milivojevic inflicted a fourth consecutive league defeat on Leicester — their worst run since 2000.

But it was the manner of the performance that would have most alarmed Puel, with two goals conceded late on to set sections of the crowd booing.

By contrast, 71-year-old Roy Hodgson was in delighted mood as he officially became the oldest ever Premier League manager.

Leicester conceded the first goal for the 19th time this season when Batshuayi was hit by James McArthur’s shot, with the ball ricocheting past Kasper Schmeichel at great pace.

It was the Belgian’s first Premier League goal in 19 months.

Although Evans responded with his first goal for Leicester, after 64 minutes, Crystal Palace quickly restored their lead with a finish from close-in by Zaha, who was returning from suspension.

Milivojevic put the game beyond doubt with a spot kick after 81 minutes when Evans, making an eventful 250th appearance in the Premier League, fouled Jeffrey Schlupp.

Zaha added his second goal, and Crystal Palace’s fourth, late on after mistakes by Harry Maguire and Schmeichel.

Interviewed on television immediately after the game, Zaha appeared surprised when James Tomkins was awarded the man-of-the-match award.

Asked to present it, Zaha joked: “Oh wow, really? Okay.”

The win put Crystal Palace six points clear of the relegation zone as they moved one place and two points behind 12th-placed Leicester.

  • Wilfried Zaha: Beating Chelsea a dream

Wilfried Zaha: Beating Chelsea a dream

Wilfried Zaha has described Crysta Palacle’s 2-1 win over Chelsea as “a dream” and believes that it will be “massive” for the ailing club’s confidence.

The Eagles, without a point or a goal all season, were expected to succumb to the Premier League champions in Saturday’s encounter at Selhurst Park.

Roy Hodgson’s side, however, put in an impressive display against Antonio Conte’s charges and went on to claim all three points thanks to Cesar Azpilicueta’s own goal and Zaha’s winner.

“I’m so tired but it was all worth it for the win. We had to win! You never know in football – we had a gameplan, worked hard and just took our chances,” the returning winger told BBC Sport.

“The first goal was massive for our confidence – it was a massive boost for the team. My goal was at the right time too, because Chelsea were coming back. I’m buzzing to have scored it.

“Me and Andros Townsend aren’t strikers so we run all over the gaff, but the boss told us that if one had the ball the other needs to get himself into the box.

“It’s a dream, managing to beat Chelsea at home. Definitely this is the start of a fightback – now we’ve got more confidence we can start to climb up the table.”

Up next for Palace is next Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United.

Another defeat to nil would have set an unwanted English league record at nine, including one at the end of last season, but Selhurst Park erupted early on when an Andros Townsend cross crept past Thibaut Courtois via a combination of Yohan Cabaye and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Tiemoue Bakayoko was given the freedom of the Palace area to head home his first Premier League goal and level the scores, but the influential Zaha – who was a menace throughout – restored Palace’s lead shortly before the break with a cool finish.

An inevitable second-half barrage arrived from Chelsea and Cesc Fabregas lashed an effort against the crossbar, but Palace clung on for a priceless victory.

It marks another disappointment for Antonio Conte, whose side were beaten 1-0 at home by Manchester City last time out and the Blues now trail Pep Guardiola’s league leaders by nine points.

Palace remain bottom of the table, seven points adrift of 17th, but the return of Zaha will give Roy Hodgson – who tasted victory as Palace boss for the first time – renewed optimism.

Zaha provided Palace with fresh attacking impetus and he forced Courtois into an early save after collecting Townsend’s low left-wing cross and turning Gary Cahill in the area.

The wait for a goal was over in the 11th minute. James McArthur cleverly slipped a pass to Townsend, whose drilled cross ricocheted off Cabaye’s knee under a challenge from David Luiz and clipped Azpilicueta before squirming past Courtois.

Palace’s frailties were exposed with startling ease just seven minutes later, though, as Cesc Fabregas fired in a corner from the right that Bakayoko headed in unmarked for his first Premier League goal.

Zaha lashed an effort past the left post, while more poor marking at a corner led to Michy Batshuayi – deputising for the injured Alvaro Morata in one of four Chelsea changes – heading wastefully over the crossbar.

Chelsea then lost Victor Moses to a hamstring injury before their misery increased on the stroke of half-time.

  • Cote d’Ivoire lists Wilfried Zaha in AFCON squad

Cote d’Ivoire lists Wilfried Zaha in AFCON squad

Crystal Palace winger, Wilfried Zaha, has been named in Cote d’Ivoire’s provisional squad for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon.

Zaha’s inclusion followed his decision to switch international allegiance from England to the West African nation, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The 24-year-old was born in Cote d’Ivoire but has two England caps, playing in friendlies against Sweden in November 2012 and Scotland the following year.

Manchester United defender, Eric Bailly, has also been called up to the 24-man squad by French coach Michel Dussuyer.

The coach also called up veteran forward, Salomon Kalou, who is set to appear in his fifth Nations Cup.

“Gervinho’s absence out injured weighs down on us, for sure. But we have had several weeks to get used to the idea,” NAN quoted Dussuyer as saying to journalists at a press conference in Abidjan.

“The arrival of Zaha is therefore great news. His profile is similar to Gervinho’s.’’

    The squad:

Goalkeepers: Sylvain Gbohuo (TP Mazembe — DR Congo), Badra Sangare (AS Tanda — Ivory Coast), Mande Sayouba (Stabaek — Norway)

Defenders: Serge Aurier (PSG — France), Mamadou Bagayoko (St Trond VV — Belgium), Eric Bailly (Manchester United — England), Simon Deli (Slavia Prague — Czech Rep), Ousmane Diarrassouba (Adanaspor — Turkey),Wilfried Kanon (ADO La Haye — Netherlands), Lamine Kone (Sunderland AFC — England), Adama Traore (FC Basle — Switzerland)

Midfielders: Victorien Angban (Granada — Spain), Cheik Doukoure (FC Metz — France), Franck Kessie (Atalanta — Italy), Yao N’guessan (AS Nancy — France), Geoffroy Die (FC Bâsle — Switzerland), Jean Seri (OGC Nice — France)

Forwards: Wilfried Bony (Stoke City FC — England), Max Gradel (Bournemouth — England), Salomon Kalou (Hertha Berlin — Germany), Jonathan Kodjia (Aston Villa — England), Nicolas Pepe (Angers — France), Giovanni Sio (Stade Renne — France), Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace — England).

  • MAN UNITED SET TO SELL ZAHA FOR JUST £5M

MAN UNITED SET TO SELL ZAHA FOR JUST £5M

MANCHESTER UNITED look set to offload Wilfried Zaha for just half the figure they initially paid for him, reports suggest.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils are set to sell Zaha for just £5 million this summer after paying an initial fee of £10m – potentially rising to £15m through add-ons – to pry him away from Crystal Palace in January 2013.

The source further states that David Moyes – who only arrived at Old Trafford himself during the summer after succeeding the immensely-successful figure of Sir Alex Ferguson – has accepted that the England international’s move to Man United has not been successful and that Zaha will not play for the club again.

Such news will presumably disappoint the talented 21-year-old, particularly when it appears that he has not been given too many opportunities to really impress in the first-team.
