  • Gunmen injure five, disrupt fishing festival in Kogi

    This year’s edition of the annual Dankwo fishing festival in Lokoja ended abruptly on Saturday when gunmen opened fire on participants.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the festival, which is an annual event organised by the Lokoja Traditional Council, was just about one hour underway when the gunmen invaded the venue, Kabawa Waterfront, in two engine boats.

    The armed invaders, three in number , positioned themselves strategically inside the boats before firing gunshots indiscriminately into the crowd.

    Guests at the event fled in different directions for safety but five of them were not so lucky as they were hit by bullets.

    Police were immediately contacted but the gunmen had escaped the scene before their arrival.

    They escaped in the same engine boats, it was gathered.

    The Kogi State Police Command spokesman, DSP William Aya, while confirming the incident, described it as unfortunate.

    According to him, all the five injured victims have been taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja for treatment.

    He explained that nobody died in the attack , saying that two suspects had been arrested.

    Aya said that full investigation into the incident had started, adding that all those linked with the attack would be arrested and prosecuted.

    Three policemen dismissed for drug trafficking in Kogi

    Kogi State Police Command has dismissed three police officers over their alleged involvement in the trafficking of 30 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

    The command’s Public Relations Officer, William Aya, who confirmed this on Wednesday in Lokoja, said the officers were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for prosecution

    According to him, the officers were dismissed after they were found guilty by a board room trial conducted by the police.

    He said their dismissal followed due process, adding that the NDLEA would handle their prosecution.

    The NDLEA had on November 7 arrested a mobile policeman for escorting a vehicle carrying 30 sacks of Indian hemp out of Lokoja.

    The drug was conveyed in a Toyota Picnic car with registration number Kogi KNA 185 LG when it was intercepted by NDLEA operatives.

    The policeman who escorted the vehicle was arrested along with two other accomplices as well as the driver of the vehicle.

    No arrest yet over bloody Melaye rally – Police

    The police in Kogi State said that no arrest has been made in connection with Monday’s bloody rally held by Senator Dino Melaye .

    The state police spokesman, William Aya, said the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department is still investigating the incident.

    Aya said the situation in Lokoja, the state capital, has become normal, adding that there was no cause for alarm.

    At least two persons, including one of the gunmen, were killed while two operatives of Department of State Security (DSS) attached to Melaye sustained gunshot wounds.

  • Armed robbers kill two policemen in Kogi

    The Police Command in Kogi said on Thursday that two of its officers were killed during an invasion of a commercial bank by suspected armed robbers.

    The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP William Aya, told newsmen in Lokoja that the officers died while warding off the armed robbers that stormed a branch of UBA at Odo Ere in Yagba East Local Government Area of the state.

    Aya said that the incident occurred on March 28, saying that the two slain officers were sergeants.

    He said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Wilson Inalegwu, had set up a committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operation to investigate the incident.

    He also said that reinforcement had been sent to the town to enhance security of lives and property, saying that the robbers would soon be arrested.
