Obiano urges peaceful co-existence among Nigerians

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has called for a peaceful co-existence among the followers of the major religions.

The governor also advised ordinary Nigerians to strengthen the unity among various groups across the country to enhance national development.

He said Nigeria would overcome its difficulties and become stronger and more prosperous.

Obiano spoke at a special church service at St. Faith Anglican Cathedral in Awka, the state capital, on Nigeria’s 54th Independence anniversary.

The governor, who read the first lesson, said peace was imperative to sustain the nation’s progress.

He added that the progress Anambra State had witnessed in various sectors, especially since the restoration of tight security, had stabilised the state.

Obiano said his administration would always support and collaborate with religious bodies to promote inter-religious harmony.

The governor also promised to work with elders of the various religious denominations to rebuild moral rectitude and understanding among the faithful.

He said: “I will soon host the association of knights of the various denominations, including the Anglicans and Catholics, as part of our continuous engagement and collaboration at promoting peace and mutual co-existence in Anambra.”

Obiano explained that his administration’s Wheels of Development, which is hinged on the four pillars of Agriculture, Trade and Commerce, Oil & Gas and Industrialisation, was creating jobs and wealth for the residents.

The governor said the state was targeting $1.9 billion investments before the end of the year.

He said other areas of development, including education, had recorded steady growth, with students coming out in flying colours in internal and external examinations.

The governor called for a collective effort to sustain the tempo of progress in the state.

Obiano said Nigeria had become the largest economy in Africa, adding that it would grow better and realise the nation’s dreams.

The governor noted that if the government could tackle insurgency and sustain various transformation programmes, Nigeria would take its rightful place among the comity of nations.

The Anglican Bishop of Awka, Rev. Alexander Ibezim, called for proactive measures to tackle corruption and mass poverty.

The cleric urged the government to implement programmes that would empower youths and discourage materialism among them.

He said Nigeria needed pious leaders, who would stand on the truth and uphold the rule of the law.

Rev Ibezim hailed Obiano for ridding the state of criminals and attracting investments, adding that stakeholders should support him to give Awka a befitting status.

Dignitaries at the service included the State Commander of National Drug Law Enforcement (NDLEA), Mr. Sule Momodu; President, Ohaneze Worldwide, Garry Nnachi Enwo Igariwey, among others.

Banker petitions Obiano, CP over alleged threat to life

ANAMBRA State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, and the state Commissioner of Police, Hosea Hassan Karma, have been petitioned by a banker in the state over alleged threats to his life by a former commissioner in the state.

The petition to Obiano was signed by the banker, Mr. Tony Okonkwo, while that of the CP in the state was signed by his lawyers, Amaka Ezeno, Head of Chambers and L.N Chikwendu, Managing Solicitor.

In a petition to Obiano, dated 24th September, 2014, titled “Urgent Intervention to Save Life,” Okonkwo alleged that the former commissioner for lands in the state (names withheld) defrauded him of over four million naira through a land deal in Ngozika Estate in Awka.

He said he instituted a case in court against him and two of his allies.

Above all, after the intervention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the said former commissioner issued him a dud cheque of N4m.

Based on the dud cheque, he alleged that the former commissioner had threatened to terminate his life and therefore, he had sent a plea to Obiano to intervene before he loses his life.

Also, according to the petition to the police, dated 19th September, 2014 the banker, through his counsels, alleged that the said former lands commissioner with two other armed men “double crossed” him when he was with his friend, around Amawbia junction on the 14th September, 2014 and threatened his life if he fails to withdraw the suit against him.

He alleged that the said commissioner with his cohorts drove in a black Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) about 8.30pm on that faithful day.

This incident according to him was reported to the Central Police Station in Awka, but to their greatest surprise, the police had sat on the report because according to them, the said commissioner uses his former position to intimidate people.

According to the petition by the lawyers on behalf of their client to the police “we therefore most humbly appeal to you sir, to use your good office to cause the case to be properly investigated to ensure that the said commissioner is arrested and prosecuted for this serious threat of life of our client.”

    Ngige congratulates Obiano

The Senator representing Anambra Central, Chris Ngige has congratulated Governor, Willie Obiano for his victory at the Supreme Court on Monday, but described it as a ‘verdict of humans’.

Ngige in a statement on Tuesday in Awka, which was made available to reporters, requested all the people of Anambra state to support Obiano to succeed in the state.

He however commended his supporters for their resilience, massive unrelenting support, which had always been there for him in all his electoral engagements and duels in the state.

Obiano floored Ngige and Comrade Tony Nwoye on Monday at the Supreme Court following the 2013 governorship election in the state.

According to the statement, signed by Ngige yesterday, “This Supreme Court judgment and other judgments of the various lower courts that upheld an election which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had admitted fell below expectations for me is a verdict of humans”.

“The judgment of the good people of Anambra has been long delivered to me since the day voters from Idemili North, Idemili South, Awka South, Ogbaru local governments (Okpoko) and my other strong holds were disenfranchised on that fateful November 16, 2013”

“We all as mortals will now wait for the Most Supreme and eternal judgment of the Almighty God on this same matter at His appointed time. God is great and wonderful”

  • ‘Ojukwu’s memory will not vanish in our minds’

‘Ojukwu’s memory will not vanish in our minds’

The memory of the late Biafrian leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu will continue to remain ever green in the minds of every Igbo person and indeed, Nigeria.

This was the view of one of the chieftains of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and human rights activist, Obele Chuka Obele, yesterday in Awka.

The activist lawyer, who recently joined the APGA, told The Nation that though Ojukwu was dead, what he did for Ndigbo would not be forgotten in a hurry by the people.

However, he hailed the leadership qualities of Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State and the National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh for holding those principles of Ojukwu.

He said that when some others who rose through the ranks of APGA to become what they are today are fighting to destroy the party, Obiano and Umeh had stood firm in protecting Ojukwu’s legacy.

According to him “in joining APGA, I will strive to sustain my lifetime principles of public service, transparency and accountability for the enthronement of a more egalitarian society, which are the bedrock of APGA”

“They are principles which I am not prepared to sacrifice. I shall dedicate my time, energy, resources and if required, my life to serve the Nigerian political society through the platform of APGA.”

“I salute the memory of our late hero, Dim Emeka Ojukwu and the other founding fathers of the party and more especially, Governor Obiano and Chief Umeh for taking the party to greater heights,” Obele Said.

  • Battle of godfather, godson looming

    Battle of godfather, godson looming

The relationship between Governor Willie Obiano and his predecessor in office, Peter Obi, is no longer as cordial as it used to be. NWANOSIKE ONU traces the genesis of the crisis.

The words making the rounds in Awka, the Anambra State capital, is that the relationship between the immediate past governor of the state, Mr. Peter Obi, and the incumbent Governor Willie Obiano is no longer as chummy as it used to be. The duo were said to be inseparable before now. They were both from the same institution, Fidelity Bank Plc, where Obi held sway as the chairman and Obiano as the executive director. It was for this reason that Obi went out of his way to install Obiano as his successor in office.

But, Obi is no longer comfortable with his friends handling of the affairs of the state, because the latter is believed to have started asserting his authority as the governor of the state. The jostling for positions ahead of the 2015 general elections is the major reason why the two friends are parting ways. It is said that those supported by Obi for one elective position or the other are being opposed by Obiano. For instance, Dubem Obaze, a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters during Obi’s administration, is believed to be gunning for the ticket to represent Anambra North senatorial district in the Senate under the APGA platform. But Obiano is said to have endorsed Alphonsus Igbeke, who had occupied the seat before now, to vie against Obi’s candidate.

Besides, a source in Awka told The Nation that there would be a cabinet reshuffle soon, and all the people imposed on Obiano by Obi would be dropped. It is said that Obiano has now resolved that he would not be intimidated or used by any godfather and hence his decision to be a man. This is coming after Governor Obiano had scaled the second huddle of Election Petitions Tribunal at the Appeal Court in Enugu. Virtually all the political offices in the state were allocated to those loyal to former governor Obi, including retaining the incumbent secretary to the state government, Oselloka Obaeze.

The feud between the two has led to the resignation of Obi recently as the chairman of the board of trustees (BOT) of the ruling party in Anambra, the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). Obi had claimed at the time, via a statement from his media aide, Valentine Obienyem, that it was as a result of family issues and the non ratification of the position by the party.

Furthermore, Obiano, The Nation gathered, recognises the factional chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, as the leader of the party and accords him more respect and privileges than his predecessor.

Though the Obi camp has not come out categorically against Obiano, but it has accused him of squandering the resources of the state. The fear, it was gathered, is that Obi is not comfortable with the current high performance credited to Obiano’s government, few months after he was sworn in as the Governor of the state. Obi, an APGA source told The Nation, is afraid that Obiano’s name will soon be on the lips of everybody in the state with the rate he is going with the construction of three fly-over bridges in the capital city of Awka.

The battle of the two giants, it is said, is likely to further destabilise APGA, given the the unending crises in the party which had led to its balkanization. During the twilight days of Obi in office, he began to do things without consultations with other party stakeholders and this earned him honour and respect as prudent person. In the days before the last governorship election in the state, he distributed sports utility vehicles (SUVs) to churches, hospitals, monarchs and all and sundry in the state. Through this act of generosity, as it were, it became a sing-song in the state by his cabinet members, traditional rulers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and even in the media, that Obi was a prudent governor who had the interest of the people at heart.

But it transpired later that he was only sharing the money that rightly belonged to the local governments. The Nation gathered that local government funds released during the administration of Obi were said to be in the region of N380 billion. One of the new projects initiated by Obi in the last days of his administration was the old Ikenga Hotel in Awka, code-named a shopping mall, which is estimated to cost 2.2 billion naira.

The reckless manner with which Obi was spending money at that time surprised a lot of observers, including Obiano who saw it as a way of compounding problems for him after his election. Even on the day of the swearing in of Obiano on the March 17, 2014, Obi had shared a good number of vehicles to organizations and groups as early as 8.30am same day.

Obiano, The Nation gathered, was not comfortable with the fact that his predecessor was dispossessing such government vehicles and nothing would be left for him to work with when he takes over.

Not only that. The Anambra State governor, The Nation gathered, was also not happy with his predecessor’s resolve to organize local government elections hurriedly less than two months before the expiration of that administration. The state had not been able to organise the election for 12 years.

The cold war between the two APGA key figures has led to some members of the National Assembly to quit APGA, which according to a source was alleged to have been instigated by Obi.

But one of the lawmakers, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, told his constituents last week that it was mere blackmail against Obi, adding that the former governor did not instigate anybody against Obiano and the party. In fact, he said the issue was not discussed with Obi.

Ogene used the occasion to debunk the claim that he had joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He added that he was not ready to leave APGA because his constituents who sent him to Abuja had not endorsed such.

Obiano to meet Ekwunife, other Reps over defection

ANAMBRA State Governor Willie Obiano has scheduled a meeting for tomorrow with four members representing the state in the House of Representatives.

The meeting followed their impending defection to the Peoples Democratic Party PDP (PDP) from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The members are Uche Ekwunife (Anaocha, Njikoka, Dunukofia Federal Constituency), Victor Afam Ogene (Ogbaru), Cyril Egwuatu Onitsha North and South) and Chris Azubogu (Nnewi North and South Federal Constituency).

Ekwunife last Sunday submitted her resignation letter to Nri Ward I APGA Chairman.

Obiano, disturbed by the development, sent invitation letters to the Reps to come and pray with him on the development.

A source, who spoke with The Nation yesterday in Awka, said Obiano is hoping the lawmakers would rescind their decision.

But it was gathered that none of the defecting APGA members was ready to return to the party over an alleged injustice against them by the party’s leadership.

The Nation was reliably informed yesterday that the APGA leadership had allegedly allocated slots to some of the party faithful to contest election in 2015, leaving out the incumbent representatives.

  • Give us electricity in Nando

    Give us electricity in Nando

I AM begging Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State to save the good people of Nando in the Anambra East Local Government Area of the state from darkness.

We have been living in this area for many years without electricity, and this situation is causing a lot of hardships for people.

We tried on our own to put a stop to our suffering, but all our efforts were in vain. We now hope that you will surely solve this problem because you have been solving similar problems confronting other communities in the state.

The people of Nando will not forget you, if you come to our aid. We will always support you and your government.

    Theo,

    Nando, Anambra State.

  • Obiano to partner Fed Govt on power reform

Obiano to partner Fed Govt on power reform

Anambra State Governor Chief Willie Obiano has promised to support the Federal Government to ensure that the power sector reform is achieved.

This followed the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) blaming Nigerians for the poor power supply.

Obiano and the NERC General Manager, Dr. Tony Akah, spoke yesterday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka during a lecture organised by the Department of Economics.

Speaking on a lecture titled: “Energy consumption, challenges and prospects in the 21st century,” Akah said electricity is not a social product, so it must be priced appropriately for investors to bring in their money.

He said because of the flat rate billing system, most Nigerians leave their appliances on throughout the day, thereby wasting the little available energy.

His words: “In Nigeria, you find a situation where families leave their electrical appliances on throughout the day. This affects the facilities.

“In some cases, you see people using 100 and 200 watts bulbs. But the normal thing is for people to us the LED bulbs, which are just three and five watts. We will conserve energies by using these bulbs.”

Akah said people should learn to maximise energy, to enable others have electricity, adding that they should use low energy consuming bulbs.

Obiano, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha, described the theme of the lecture as apt.

Hailing the Federal Government on its commitment to the power reform sector, he urged Nigerians to be patient to allow a workable reform.

The Head of Department, Uche Nwogwugwu, said the theme of the lecture was chosen to recognise the role power plays in people’s lives.

  • Obi, Ngige, Emodi absent as Obiano meets stakeholders

Obi, Ngige, Emodi absent as Obiano meets stakeholders

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano met at the weekend stakeholders in parties.

He solicited their cooperation to develop the state.

The meeting was held at the Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia. Senator Chris Ngige, former Governor Peter Obi and Senator Joy Emodi, among others, were absent.

Although, some chieftains of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), such as Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and Senator Emma Anosike attended the meeting, people believed the invitation did not go round.

Obi, The Nation learnt, did not attend the meeting.

A source alleged that despite an invitation by Obiano to Obi, he (Obi) claimed he missed his flight.

The meeting lasted more than four hours. Some of the bigwigs spoke on issues.

Obiano was reportedly hailed for appointing technocrats to his executive council (exco).

The governor said he convened the meeting to ask for support, adding that everybody should forget the past to develop the state.

The meeting was also attended by elder statesmen, leaders of women groups and others.

Obiano said the time had come for Ndi Anambra to set aside their political differences and cooperate in the interest of the state.

Senator Anosike slammed politicians, including himself, for destroying the state.

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, lauded the governor for moving to turn the state around.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, hailed the governor for inviting Anambra’s stakeholders for a dialogue. He advised that the meeting should be held regularly.

A former governorship aspirant, Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu of the PDP, praised the governor for demonstrating a sincerity of purpose.

  • ‘Boko Haram can’t attack southeast’

    ‘Boko Haram can’t attack southeast’

Some South-East governors on Monday declared that the Boko Haram sect cannot attack the zone.

They made the remark after meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The governors include Willy Obiano (Anambra); Sullivan Chime (Enugu); Theodore Orji (Abia) and Martins Elechi (Ebonyi). Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha was absent.

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the closed-door meeting, Obiano maintained that the sect could not get to the South-East as they (the governors) are very alert.

He was reacting to the reports that police on Sunday uncovered three improvised explosive devices planted in Winners Chapel church in Owerri, Imo State Capital.

He said: “No, they cannot get there. I can assure you of that. We will not allow that to happen. I cannot tell you in any material details about the bombs found or not found. All I can assure you is that we are very alert in the South-East and we are watching what is going on. I can assure you that Boko Haram cannot come to the Southeast.”

According to him, they were at the Presidential Villa on a solidarity visit to Preseident Jonathan, whom he said, was under a lot of pressure.

“The President is a human being and he is under a lot of pressure. Some other people are making the work a lot more difficult for him. Instead of supporting him to steer us out of these stormy waters, they are adding kerosene to fire. So, we are here to tell him that we are supporting him and that he should count on us,” the governor said.

On erosion ravaging parts of the Southeast, particularly his state, Obiano disclosed that the World Bank was partnering with the state to tackle the problem while the government was evolving laws to curb the excesses of residents whose activities worsen erosion problems.
