  • I’ll contest, win election, says Jegede

Factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Eyitayo Jegede at the weekend gave his supporters hope that he will still contest the election.

Jegede spoke at a reception organised for him by PDP supporters in Akure, the state capital, after returning from Abuja.

The former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice had been in Abuja with his legal team battling to resolve the replacement of his name by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with Jimoh Ibrahim.

Jegede’s appeal is still pending at the Abuja Court of Appeal, which has adjourned its sitting on the case indefinitely.

Jegede belongs to the Ahmed Markarfi faction.  Ibrahim is of the Ali Modu Sheriff camp.

The embattled PDP chieftain said he is sure he would contest and win the election after getting justice from the appellate court.

His words: “Mark my words, we will contest and win this election.

“Let me tell you, this is not about Eyitayo Jegede alone, it is about the people of Ondo State.

“This is about good governance in our state, this is about continuation and improvement on the good things we have been  enjoying in our state.

“I’m in this business to reclaim my mandate and I’m serious about it.”

The lawyer dismissed the rumour that his supporters had moved to other parties.

He noted that his supporters across the 18 local governments were still with him, adding that the  love  shown to him has never been shown to any candidate before.

He said: “I do not know of any candidate who will have a market in the state capital shut down because of him.

“This present distraction will soon be over and your man, your brother, your son, Eyitayo Jegede will contest and win the election.

“Keep on praying, keep on trusting God and by God’s grace we will triumph and we shall be victorious.“

  • How to win anti-graft war, by Sagay

How to win anti-graft war, by Sagay

Forner university don and legal luminary Prof. Itsey Sagay spoke with reporters in Lagos on the anti-graft war and how the judiciary can join President Muhammadu Buhari to win. Political Editor emmanuel oladesu was there.

What is your position on the DSS raid on the homes of some judges and justices?

I can respond to this as Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption because we have an official position, and that position is: There is nobody that is above the law in this country. The only people who are enjoying immunity against criminal prosecution are president, vice president, governors, and deputy governors. Anybody outside this group is totally subject to the full weight of the law for any crime he/she commits.

Why we look at the judiciary, with all respect, is that we expect them to conduct themselves in such a manner that they are totally above suspicion. I personally have done a study of the judiciary in the past. The judiciary I refer to is the golden era of the Supreme Court – Supreme Court of Oputa, Nnamani, Obaseki and Bello among others. I studied their supreme courts and the image and aura that accompanied their conduct and the air around them were carried on from the colonial era.

These are people no anti-corruption agency in Nigeria will dare accuse of corruption because they have such high moral of authority. These are the people, who when President Muhammadu Buhari was the military head of state, held, on many occasions, that actions of that government were illegal in one way or the other and the government obeyed immediately because of the authority these people had. So, any judicial authority that wants to maintain that aura and authority must be credible. You cannot be corrupt and expect to be respected.

You cannot reduce yourself to a level where you are purchasable, where what I will call irresponsible and low type of lawyers will carry money to you and buy your soul and you sell your judgement. The highest bidder will now hand over money to the judge.

So, when you bring us down to that level where nobody can determine the outcome of a judgement based on arguments, the law and facts, then, you have destroyed the judiciary. Those judges, who are corrupt have destroyed the judiciary and nothing is too much for their punishment.

Who are the corrupt persons? They are the politicians and lawyers who share part of the proceeds of crimes. These politicians and lawyers are stabbing Nigeria one after the other and our blood is flowing. Judiciary has stabbed Nigeria. If they want to destroy Nigeria, we have to uproot those people for our country to survive.

In your view, do you think the anti-corruption war of the Federal Government is sustainable?

It is sustainable, if Nigeria wants it to be sustainable. After all it is a democracy. If you are taking legitimate steps to root out corruption in the judiciary, that is the first place. We must root it out from the judiciary, otherwise we are going nowhere. After you have cleared out the political class and the lawyers we are left with nothing. You will go there and you will find justice. Judiciary is the first point of call. We must purge the judiciary of corruption. That is where we have to start.

The said punishment must be after judgement. There has to be a mindset for those who are looking for corrupt persons. There will be investigation of suspicious behaviours, secretly acquired of illegitimate funds, leading to investigation, arrest and prosecution.

It is the judge, who will hear the case. He is the one who has to be to cleared and seen to be neutral. He is the one who will assume innocence before conviction. Although, the case by angry Nigerians is that the process of innocence should be removed and that those charged should prove their own innocence. The prosecutor cannot have the mindset that we are talking about. Otherwise, there will be no investigation and there will be no prosecution.

The Legal Adviser of the APC, Dr Muiz Banire has stepped down from his position following allegations that he induced a judge, how is Amaechi’s case different from that?

That one is different. N500,000 was found in an account of a judge, which was paid by Muiz Banire. There is no such link. No such was found against Amaechi. It is just the mere words of the judges. There is a lot of difference.

His take on the role of the NJC in the fight against corruption

I will blame them totally for the ineffectiveness of the fight against corruption to certain extent. NJC is established for a routine misconduct. There are no volumes of corruption that have not been found in our judiciary. People who have taken a whole lot of money from politicians will pay salaries of thousands of Nigerians for many years. When it gets to that stage, then you are dealing with a serious disease. The NJC is not meant to do that. Their job is geared towards routine misconduct in normal situations. What we have is not normal. It is an epidemic. It is just too much.

Do you think the NJC is overburdened?

My personal view is that none of those operating at the level of NJC should be serving justices. They should be retired justices with clean records because we had a situation in which one of those accused of corruption and misconduct was a sitting Chief Justice of Nigeria and he influenced the whole process to the extent that an innocent President of the Court of Appeal was suspended and not allowed to return to his seat until he retired because the corruption and misconduct of that CJN was in consonance with the President and the party in power.

It is better to have a group of people who have nothing at stake, nothing to lose and no objection. Too many people are currently holding positions who are themselves living on huge sums of corrupt money, sitting and considering people who have been brought to court. How would you feel? You know you have committed the same thing. You know the money is somewhere and can be found in future. You don’t caution yourselves by dealing with a fellow traveller in that area. That is the problem.

Some are worried that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC acting chairman, Magu has not been confirmed. Are you worried?

I am not bothered and neither am I surprised because some of those who are to confirm him are under investigation. And to a typical Nigerian, there is no sense of duty, no sense of respect and no embarrassment. They are ready to fight dirty and expose themselves. People are in positions they forced themselves on in this country. Otherwise there should be no reason why they should not confirm him because they think they are saving themselves against the crimes they have committed.

The embattled justices are being accused of having huge sums of money in their possession. As a senior lawyer, is there a provision of the law that stipulates the amount of money a Nigerian should have in his possession?

There is a provision in the ICPC Act and similar provision is in the EFCC Act. The ICPC and EFCC are entitled to investigate any person who is living above his income, in order to determine where he is getting his extra income for his style of living. There is also a provision in the ICPC Act that entitles the government to bring an application to freeze an asset owned by somebody who cannot account for how he got it. In that case, he is obliged to provide evidence on how he acquired the money. If he cannot account, he loses that asset and presently before the National Assembly, there is a bill, which is very clear, that at any point in time that the security agency and anti-corruption agencies can ask you to account for any asset you have and how you acquired the asset, what you are doing to acquire it and if you cannot, they will give it to the state. That is how it is all over the world. We are among the few exception of countries that have not been practising this.

I am optimistic that we will get some convicted or acquitted. We are interested in seeing cases come to conclusion. You are either convicted or acquitted. We don’t want to see suspended cases again starting from 2003, which have not been resolved. But with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, we are bound to see a major improvement because that act has blocked all the loopholes.

Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, who are the colleagues of politicians they are exploiting and sharing the proceeds, feel totally committed to looking for loopholes. Rather than defending their clients, they look for loopholes to deny that the court has jurisdiction and drag that issue to the Court of Appeal and to the Supreme Court for a period of 10 years or more. By the time, he comes back 10 years later, the court has the jurisdiction to try the case, witnesses and prosecutors are no longer there. There are new prosecutors not familiar with the case. All sorts of complications would have arisen to make the case almost impossible to resolve.

This new act has provided four major things that are very helpful. If you make an application that the court has no jurisdiction, or any other preliminary objection, the court is empowered to hear your objection. After he hears it, he says, ‘fine, let us go to the main case.’ He hears the main case and gives ruling for the objection and judgement at the same time. So from there you move to the Court of Appeal.

Secondly, the court is now committed to give day-to-day hearing. No adjournment. You must hear the case every day until it is completed.

Thirdly, if a judge is promoted, no matter how far he has gone with the case, the case has to be given to another judge. The judge is at the verge of giving the judgement when he was promoted. That has ended.

Finally, an appeal does not constitute stay of consideration. So you can appeal 20 times. These are the tricks lawyers are using. They just appeal. The appeal has been eliminated; a case goes on at the same time. If they are firmly implemented and that is what my committee urged to be implemented. Cases will go on with little or no interruption till the end. If that is done, we will see numerous cases decided this year.

  • ‘Obaseki ‘ll win by landslide’

The governorship election in Edo state is just few weeks away from now the big question is: what are the options before Edolites? From all indications, everybody knows where the pendulum will swing to. And that is the election of  Godwin Obaseki.

The choice is therefore, before Edo residents as the survey shows that Obaseki will win the election by a landslide election. Edolites are no pushovers. They cannot be deceived. They are not blind. They have realized that giving Obaseki the first four year team will transform the state into another Dubai after Oshiomhole.

A new Edo with modern infrastructure, good roads, finer environment, good hospitals stocked with equipment and potable water and good learning environment is guaranteed.

Edo under “OshioBaba  has become the envy of all. It is a reference point for foreigners and even those who know what governance is.

Governor Oshiomhole in eight years has made us to believe that Edo can work and it is working. Go to Ring road and see the difference. Is it sapele road or Airport road that has not been transformed? People now obey traffic lights because of the fear of Comrade Osakpamwan Eriyo, the State Chairman Road Employee Transport Association of Nigeria.

Many roads have been rehabilitated. New ones have been constructed and commissioned. Water flows thus reducing epidemic in the city. Healthcare especially for the people have been given top priority. In the area of transportation the Comrade bus is a success story which Obaseki will build upon in his first four years in office.

These are the giant strides Obaseki as the man behind Oshiomhole’s success has accomplished in just eight years. Come to think of it, are there other contestants in Edo State? We are not hearing about them. Mr Paul Obazee Party Secretary ward 12, Oredo LGA recently said that PDP should forget about Edo because of the massive progress made by Oshiomhole and its team. Truth is bitter, but it must be said. The Lagos State governor Ambode said as the campaign chairman I am personally taking responsibility to ensure that beyond the campaign and the success of the election, a major commerce and economic relationship commence immediately with the in-coming governor, and also to let us actually start to have bilateral economic and political relations that will be of benefit to the people of Edo state, and then to the improvement of the economic growth of Edo state”.

Oshiomole introduced the governorship candidate Mr Godwin Obaseki and his running mate Mr Philip Shaibu to governor Ambode and said “we have a candidate messenger that we you are going to be able to help us to market, and we also have a compelling message to put across to Edo people. And we believe the election will be won on the basis of the pedigree of the political parties, the pedigree of the individual and what the two parties have to show to the people”

The Commissioner for Works, Mr. Osaradion Ogie who is also the DG of Godwin Obaseki campaign Organization said “we must be courageous and determined to achieve the goals we want for our people. I therefore stand before you today, on the shoulders of the success built by the current administration over the last seven and half years. We have transformed Edo state in all aspects. Pastor Izeiyamu of PDP is no match for Obaseki. APC is waxing strong. Obaseki desire to change Edo will be seen in his First term. The man means well for Edo. At this stage of our development in Edo State we need a man like Obaseki to take it to greater heights.

Edo of all calling, tribes, religion know that he is the best man for the job. He has been tested and proved to be the best. My advice is that you should shine your eyes, vote wisely and for the right man, and that is Obaseki. Edo cannot afford to fall into the hands of mediocres, charlatans.

Edo people should resist rigging and vote with their conscience for the person who been part of Oshiomhole’s massive development of the state. There should be continuity in a peaceful Edo where security is even more guaranteed now than Abuja.

  • ‘How to win academic laurels’

Members of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) chapter of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) have held a three-day rally to promote mutual understanding with Christians and other religious groups on the campus. The rally was part of the activities marking the society’s yearly Week.

Its Amir, Muhibdeen Bolakale, said the outreach was necessary to sensitise members of the university community on the need to promote peaceful coexistence and encourage interactions among religious groups.

He stressed the need for love, oneness and tolerance, saying adherents of all religions were created by one God.

The event tagged: Jihad Fisabilillah and general misconceptions in Islam, attracted participants from many institutions in the Southeast.

Receiving the MSSN members in his office, the society’s Staff Adviser, Shuaibu Abdulahi, urged them to turn to Allah in times of despair and in repentance. He charged the students to elevate their spiritual life, adding that hard work and prayers remained the way to achieve  academic laurels.

Abdulahi also advised the students to uphold teachings of Islam and perform its obligations. Religious harmony, he said, would be entrenched on the campus if the students show their colleagues the beauty of Islam through their attitude and deeds.

As part of activities marking the event, the MSSN students held sanitation and cleaned up notable places on campus. They also visited the school hostels to meet Christian colleagues in discussion to promote peace. The event featured a lecture on Islamic view management by Abdul Mu’min Issah.

Other highlights included medical outreach and award presentation.

Rookie Mistura Subair top scored with 13 points for  Dolphins who rested their starting five for the last 8 minutes of the game. Power forward Aderinsola Idowu added 11 points and 7 rebounds to join Mistura as the only Dolphins player to score double figures.

Head coach of Dolphins, Ochuko Okworogwu after the game said in spite of the win her team has not been impressive, but praised the level of competition.

“We are going back to work hard for the second phase, we were very slack in defence in the first phase. We can’t afford to continue to play that way if we want to retain our title.

“Other teams have improved, but the sponsors and the federation still need to give more support to the teams financially and otherwise,” she added.

AHIP, who gave an improved performance from Saturday night, had Chinwe Okah and Victoria Ofiri as top scorers with nine points apiece in the loss.

Wilson Idanwenkhai head coach of AHIP believes his team will be stronger for the second phase of the league next month.

“We started like this last season because we had little time to jell and we are just getting into rhythm. We won’t go home to rest and I know we will come back better just like we did in last season’s second phase and hopefully secure a place in the playoffs”.

  • Dike relishes win against Lobi

    Dike relishes win against Lobi

Heartland head coach, Alphonsus Dike has described as huge relief his side’s first victory in the ongoing Nigerian top flight.

The Naze Millionaires piped hard fighting Lobi Stars 1-0 in Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matchday 5 clash at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.

Forward, Fortune Omoniwari scored the match winner that handed his side the first three points of the season.

Dike said the victory is the tonic his side needed to turn around positively their fortune which saw the Owerri outfit winless in the last four matches.

“It was a hard match and hard fought victory as we strive to pick up momentum after going four matches without a win.

“The goal margin could have been more as we missed some chances at goal due to pressure on the players to impress and avoid another unsavoury result.

“Of course, the atmosphere prior and during the game was a bit charged as some people understandably are already losing confidence in the team and openly expressed their feelings.

“I want to believe that this victory is the turnaround we need to play ourselves back to reckoning in the league.

“I’m happy with the win and it came with huge relief to everybody who has witnessed the side’s poor results in the past matches.

“At least the jinx of not winning on home ground as well as not scoring has been broken with today’s (Sunday) victory.

“We will not relent but work harder to reclaim some of the points we have given away in our subsequent matches,” said the former Enugu Rangers and Nasarawa United coach to supersport.com.

The victory against the Pride of Benue, Lobi Stars has jerked up Heartland’s total earnings to five points from possible 15 in the five-week old top flight.

    Enyeama’s heroics deny PSG win

Vincent Enyeama produced a heroic performance on Saturday to help Lille OSC claim a point at runaway Ligue 1 leaders, Paris Saint Germain.

The Nigerian goalkeeper made no less than five top-class saves to deny the hosts victory in front of 45,391 supporters at Parc des Princes.

Enyeama was first called to duty as early as the ninth minute when he produced a full length dive to push out Jean Kevin Agustin’s effort.

Six minutes later, the former Enyimba man kept out Edinson Cavani’s effort after the Uruguayan was expertly set up by Angel di Maria.

In the 25th minute, Enyeama brilliantly denied Di Maria whose free kick seemed destined for the top right hand corner as PSG cranked up the pressure.

His best save was produced in the 65th minute as he dived expertly to deny Loucas Moura from 25 yards. He had to be alert in the 87th minute though to deny Cavani from close range as Les Dougues held out for a hard-fought point.

Enyeama’s performance did not go unnoticed by the Lille captain, Rio Mavuba, who reserved some words of adulation for the Nigerian shot-stopper.

“This is a very good point made here. The Parisians caused us problems severally, but Vincent (Enyeama) made the saves that were necessary for us to avoid defeat,” Mavuba told the club’s official website, www.losc.fr.

Enyeama has played 23 league matches for Lille this season.

  • Eagles can win the title

    Eagles can win the title

3SC ace Ajani Ibrahim has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances at the ongoing 2016 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament in Rwanda.

Ajani, who did not make the team to the competition, is confident in the ability of his homebased colleagues to win the title.

The Super Eagles B team made their debut at the tournament in South Africa in 2013 and emerged as the third best team after defeating Zimbabwe 1-0 in the losers final. This year they’ve been placed in Group C alongside Niger, Tunisia, and Guinea.

‘The Eagles have what it takes to lift the trophy in Kigali,’ Ajani told SportingLife. ‘The team should forget the fact that they’ve neither played in the final nor lifted the trophy in the past.’

He insists that the team has trained very well and played good test matches before hitting Kigali.

‘2016 could be a turn-around edition for Nigeria. The team has had good preparations before the tournament and should be able to deliver,’ he added.

Nigeria will begin their journey in CHAN with their first match today against Niger Republic.
