  • Aregbesola ‘ll win by 73%, says opinion poll

Aregbesola ‘ll win by 73%, says opinion poll

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola will win the August 9 governorship election by 73 per cent, if there is a free and fair election, TSN-RSM, a survey group, has predicted.

The research firm, which is a member of Gallup International, also reported that Aregbesola’s main challenger and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyiola Omisore, is behind by 54 points.

However, the survey, which was conducted in Osun State between June and last month, also said that public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dropped by 10 points.

The survey stated: “The APC continues to dominate the political landscape in Osun State, judging by its performance on key indicators evaluated. It scored highest and increased in rating on first mention, sympathy and voting intention.”

It added: “The governor, Rauf Aregbesola, is the candidate of choice by Osun voters with 73 per cent lead over other candidates. This is a clear indication that the choice of Osun voters in the next governorship race is Governor Rauf Aregbesola.”

Omisore polled 19 per cent, representing a two percent decline from the earlier survey.

“The governor remains the main voting choice. Voting choice for Senator Omisore declined by two per cent and seemed not to pose a threat to the incumbent’s chances of re-election as he remains firmly ahead of the race.”

“Not only is the APC the most preferred party in Osun State, it has largely retained this goodwill from way back in the past. It was the party that most people claimed to have voted for in the last election and it is still the party with the highest chances of winning the election again. More importantly, the gap by which it outperforms the opposition, continues to widen and more convincing in the survey.”

In the report, the APC is rated very high as its top-of-mind and awareness increased from 75 per cent to 78 per cent over the two polls, followed by the PDP with 18 per cent, a drop of three per cent from 21 per cent in the first study.

The Labour Party (LP) came third, with a negligible one per cent. Furthermore, the “electorate choice” for the APC is now 70 per cent, boosted by one per cent increment. Nineteen percent indicated that they would vote for the PDP, which represented another three per cent drop. The electorate’s choice for the LP remained one percent.

The report stressed:  “While Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is more known than his party, Senator Iyiola Omisore is less known than his party. The top-of-mind awareness of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola increased to 85 per cent (from 79 per cent), affinity increased from 72 per cent to 74 per cent and chances of being re-elected increased from 71 per cent to 73 per cent.”

“Conversely, it is a tale of decline for the man in the second place, Senator Omisore. For the top-of-mind awareness, the PDP candidate dropped to 13 per cent from 19 per cent, affinity fell to 19 per cent from 21per cent and chances of being elected declined to 19 per cent from 21 per cent.”

The analysis showed that while the affinity of the Osun electorate towards the APC increased by four per cent, the PDP failed to maintain its connection to the people. The positive perception of the APC by Osun voters stood at 83 per cent while on 17 per cent viewed the APC as unfavourable.

According to the polls, 98 per cent of respondents said they would participate in the August 9 election. This suggests that the people are prepared for any eventuality in election.

The survey also showed the strength of the candidates and their parties in the local government areas across the state.

“The repeat of the APC high chance to win in all the local government areas (LGAs) seem to play out again in the next election. The APC is poised to repeat this feat, except in Ife Central and Ife East. The PDP seemed well-positioned to win these two LGAs. The LP’s weakness is imminent across all the LGAs.

“The incumbent’s chances of being reelected remain same across the LGAs, except in Ife Central and Ife East. The incumbent’s chances of re-election remain high and leads his closest rival by a good margin of 54 per cent – an increment of four per cent over the last survey.”

But the voters’ confidence in the INEC dropped to from 57 per cent to 67 per cent.

Statistically, the research firm stated that that “the margin of error for the survey is “plus or minus five per cent, with 95 per cent level of confidence.”

Joel Obi shines in Inter win over Madrid

Nigeria International Joel Chukwuma Obi started for Inter Milan as they beat Real Madrid 3-2 on penalties after extra-time ended 1-1.

Joel Obi was Inter Milan’s top battler in a physical contest that saw four yellow cards and feisty confrontations from players of both teams.

It was the Nigerian midfielder’s third consecutive preseason game for Inter-Milan since re-joining the team after a loan spell at Parma last season.

In the encounter Gareth Bale scored for Real Madrid in the 10th minute, unleashing a strike into the top left corner of the net from about 25 yards out.

Mauro Icardi converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute to equalise after Referee Ricardo Salazar awarded the penalty kick for a foul by Sobrino on Inter newcomer Nemanja Vidic.

The game remained locked at 1-1 forcing both teams to go into penalty kicks.

Mauro Icardi drove the winner past diving goalkeeper Jesus Fdez in the fifth round of penalty kicks to lift Inter Milan past Real Madrid.

The pre-season game is one among the series of games to be played at the International Champions Cup match.

Obi will be hoping to be in the team on Tuesday when Inter-Milan battle Manchester United.

  • NIGER 2015 QUALIFIER: Eaglets in Congo to win, says Amuneke

NIGER 2015 QUALIFIER: Eaglets in Congo to win, says Amuneke

Nigeria’s Under-17 national team, the Golden Eaglets, will be going for nothing but victory when they face the Junior Leopards of Congo Democratic Republic in an African U-17 Championship (Niger 2015) qualifier on Saturday in Kinshasa.

This much was said by the team’s Head Coach, Emmanuel Amuneke (MON) after the Eaglets’ final training  session yesterday, ahead  of the match fixed for 3:30pm local time (3:30pm Nigerian time) at  the Tata Raphael Stadium today.

” We are here to win and it is as simple as that but we know  that the game will not be as simple as that,”  said Amuneke who scored match-winning goals when Nigeria won the 1994 African Cup of Nations and  Atlanta’96 Olympic Soccer Gold medal. “We have constantly told the boys that all what we had done in the past are now in the past and the moment of serious business is here for us.”

Keen followers of the Eaglets can readily predict the team’s line up after remarkably going 21 matches undefeated in regulation time (bar the penalty shoot-out loss to Benin at the WAFU B Tournament in Togo) fuelling suspicion that the 1994 African Footballer of the Year might stick to his reliables against Congo DR.

“The only difference between Saturday’s (today’s) match and the ones we played in the past is just the circumstance because this is one of the qualifiers for Niger,” he explained. “So it is important for us to win irrespective of what Congo will throw at us because we know Kinshasa is a difficult place to win matches.”

Typically, Amuneke refrained from picking any particular player as the  joker for the match saying that all the 18 players on the trip are physically and psychologically ready for what is regarded within the rank of the team as ‘The Battle of Kinshasa.’

“Joker? I don’t have any joker for the match,” he bluntly said. “What we have is a team with a winning mentality and we have brought players we believe will do the job for us.”

  • Awoniyi inspires Flying Eagles to 5-0 win

Awoniyi inspires Flying Eagles to 5-0 win

Nigeria’s Under 20 team, the Flying Eagles, on Thursday stepped up their build-up for next month’s final Africa Youth Championship (AFCON) qualifier against Lesotho when they trounced Nigeria National League (NNL) side Prisons FC of Abuja 5-0.

The Flying Eagles will host Lesotho on August 16 with the return leg a fortnight later in Maseru and the overall winners will advance to the 2015 AYC to be staged by Senegal in March.

Taiwo Awoniyi, fresh from a training stint in Sweden,  opened scoring with Ifeanyi Matthew, Sulaiman Abdullahi, Chisom Eze and Segun Alebiosu also getting on the scoreboard.

The Nigeria U-20s opened scoring after 12 minutes from the penalty spot when Awoniyi was fouled inside the box and Ifeanyi Matthew sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Awoniyi then fired the first goal on 26 minutes, when he crashed his effort from inside the box into the roof of the net.

The languid striker would have scored again in first half stoppage time, but he missed an easy chance.

Prisons’ best chance came in the 53rd minute, when Flying Eagles goalie Joshua Enaholo parried a goal-bound effort for a corner kick.

In the 69th minute, substitute Sulaiman Abdullahi scored the Flying Eagles’ third goal when he lobbed over the Prisons goalie before he coolly finished off. Prisons midfielder Ochule Paul was sent off in the 71st minute for dissent.

Substitutes Chisom Eze and Alebiosu crowned the victory with well-taken goals in the 73rd and 89th minutes respectively.

  • Aluko scores in Tigers’ win

Nigeria winger, Sone Aluko, was on target in Hull City’s 2-0 win over York in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday night.

Sone Aluko and Yanick Sagbo struck after the interval to break York’s stubborn resistance and settle matters.

The Tigers were matched by their Yorkshire counterparts in what was largely an uneventful first 45 minutes, with the only real action of note coming when summer signing Robert Snodgrass saw his goal disallowed after the assistant referee ruled that Shane Long had failed to prevent Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross from going out of play.

Robbie Brady had an opportunity to open the scoring after Long was awarded a free-kick 25-yards from goal following a foul by Marvin McCoy. However, the chance went to waste as the Irishman fired the set-piece over the bar.

Within five minutes of the restart, the Tigers opened the scoring. Aluko picked the ball up outside the area and let fly with a 25-yard effort that crept under the body of Ingham.

The home side responded in positive fashion and came close to leveling the scores when Jake Hyde forced Allan McGregor into making a smart save.

Ince could have made it 2-0 when he was put through one-on-one, only to fire straight at Ingham, before Michael Coulson was denied by the top of the crossbar after latching onto Ryan Jarvis’ ball over the top.

The Tigers secured the win with 13 minutes remaining when Sagbo smashed the ball past substitute keeper Jason Mooney following a defensive mistake from Keith Lowe.

Hull City, who would be participating in the UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, Carling Cup and the Premier League, are eyeing a good show in the competitions and Aluko is expected to play a key role in their campaign next season.

  • Musa shines in CSKA Moscow’s big win

Musa shines in CSKA Moscow’s big win

Nigeria World Cup star Ahmed Musa shone as he provided three assists for CSKA Moscow to trounce OFK Beograd of Serbia 4-0 in a pre-season friendly.

The former JUTH FC of Jos player assisted Cote d’Ivoire star Seydou Doumbia for two of his three goals and he lasted 55 minutes before he was substituted.

Ahmed Musa told AfricanFootball.com it was a good test for the Russian champions.

“It was a good test, though we won 4-0,but our opponents put in their best, but we found the formula to break their defence,” Musa said.

“Though I didn’t score a goal, I gave three assists and I am happy we won the game and played well.”

The ex-VVV Venlo forward joined his team last week for pre-season training after he was given an extended break after playing at the World Cup in Brazil.

  • Prime dedicate win to Aregbesola

    • Zoom into quarter-final
    • Await winner of Bayelsa/Gateway

The Management of Prime FC of Ogbomoso has dedicated its Federation Cup round of 16 win over First Bank FC of Lagos to the State of Osun governor Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

Prime advanced to the quarter-finals after beating First Bank 3-2 on penalties at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin on Thursday after 1-1 draw at the regulation time.

There was a Wild celebration from the team’s fans inside the stadium as Prime booked their ticket to the next round.

The Omoluabi Giants keeper Adejare Adeniyi was a hero after stopping three of First Bank kicks to send his side to the last 8, while First Bank safehand, Shakiru Lawal saved two kicks.

Lasisi Yusuff shot Prime to lead in the 20th minute from a rebound off Abdullah Fatai’s free-kick.

First Bank came into the game stronger after conceding the lone goal and their fireworks in front of goal was curtailed by the impressive Prime defence line and goalkeeper, Adejare Adeniyi to end the first half a goal in favour of Prime.

First Bank took full advantage of some Prime sloppiness at the back to equalise in the 54th minute.

In a chat with SportingLife, the club’s media officer, Tunde Samsudeen heaped praises on the players for their resilience while he admitted that the State government has contributed immensely to the team’s success so far.

“We thank God for the win. The boys fought well for the victory. We dedicated the victory to our sports-loving Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. The government is really behind the team. The players have been well motivated through our season administrator Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi,” Samsudeen told SportingLife.

Prime will lock horn against the winner of Bayelsa United/Gateway FC in the quarter-final next week.
