  • Winners emerge in maiden RAW Challenge

Winners have emerged in the maiden edition of the Rejoice Alabi Writing (RAW) Challenge for first year Law students.

The competition, with the theme: Why I want to be a lawyer, is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the founding partner of Egbaaibon & Alabi LP, Mr Rejoice Alabi.

Uverineh Oghenefejiro of the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, beat over 40 students from 10 universities to come tops.

Ogunba Ademiposi and Ibikunle Daniel, both of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Osun State, were second and third.

The trio were rewarded with N30,000, N20,000 and N10,000 cash prizes.

Seven other winners included Okorafor Chidera Naomi of the University of Nigeria (UNN), Iyogun Emmanuella of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Aluko Deborah and Esther M. Osore both of the University of Ibadan (UI).

All participants received certificates of participation while the top seven winners have been attached to practising First Class lawyers for mentoring.

Alabi, who made a First Class at the Nigerian Law School in 2016, told The Nation that entries for the event, received between January 15 and February 14, “were carefully scrutinised and graded by a team of young First Class lawyers.”

Alabi said the RAW Challenge “was organised to identify and selectively mentor raw legal minds to raise a generation of purpose-driven young lawyers who will revolutionise the future of legal practice and nation building; and unleash maximum impact.

“The challenge was introduced during the recently called off Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike and it afforded the participants a platform to objectively evaluate and reassess their career choice even in the midst of the academic crisis.

“More interesting is the endorsement and support the initiative received from individuals as well as local and international not-for-profit organisations such as the MCQ App, Ekaete Hunter Blog, iRead To Live Initiative, Feathers Creative, De Champ Tech House and Mrs Akinsunmade of the Nigerian Ports Authority who donated a 100 per cent addition to the originally announced prizes.”

The second edition will start with the resumption of new first year law students across the country.

  • Winners emerge in maiden Abacus Smartkids Challenge

Pupils of Dome Private Schools Lagos State recently tested their speed and accuracy in solving mathematics questions during the maiden edition of Abacus Smartkids Challenge, an inter-school competition.

At the end of the competition, which held at Princeton Schools, Lagos, winners emerged in various categories, all showing dexterity in the use of Abacus, a device made up of strings of beads within a frame used for counting. It is reputed for helping those trained in its use to solve mathematics problems mentally with great speed.

Varrier Devesh, Director of Training, Edusoft Associates, organisers of the competition, said the contest provided a platform for schools to test the skills and speed of their pupils when given mathematics challenges.

He added that Abacus will eliminate the phobia associated with Mathematics and replaces same with interest in the subject in a bid to lay a solid foundation for a lifelong pursuit of scholarly activities.

“Beyond the use of Abacus as a tool to enhance the speed of thought, is the confidence its use gives pupils. And when they are not with the Abacus tool, they have already been imbued with the training so much so that their speed of thought is greatly enhanced as the kids have clearly demonstrated,” he said.

Alhaji Jimoh Are, Chairman, Lagos State Chapter of the Mathematics Association of Nigeria (MAN), who was the grand judge of the competition, said the Abacus Smartkids Challenge is a welcome addition to the Mathematics calendar in Nigeria. “Abacus is so important to the counting system of the entire foundation of Mathematics that its importance cannot be overemphasised. The logo of the association, for instance, is an abacus,” he said.

He enjoined Edusoft Associates to consider taking the competition nationwide in order to avail schools from other regions the opportunity of participating.

“MAN has accepted that the competition should be nationwide so as to cover a larger segment of pupils. Children trained with Abacus are smarter and more intelligent,” he added.

Kudos as winners emerge in The Nation’s promo

IT was a lucky dip. A large crowd came from all over the country for the draw. Many in the crowd are readers of this newspaper who participated in a promo which ran between October, last year and January 21.

The promo was tagged “Buy The Nation and Sporting Life and win brand new cars”.

Two lucky readers, Samuel Daramola and Ganiyu Adeleke won the star prizes of two brand new cars.

The 27B Fatai Atere Way, Matori, Lagos corporate office of The Nation, brimmed with people.

Daramola, with serial number 2352, was picked by footbal legend, Kanu Nwankwo; Adeleke, with serial number 1423, was picked by seasoned actor, Ejike Asiegbu.

Other lucky winners smiled home with consolation prizes which include LCD TVs, home theatres, refrigerators, pressing irons, radios and microwave ovens.

The crowd-pulling event was anchored by the Chairman, Editorial Board, Mr Sam Omatseye, who, on behalf of the Managing Director, Mr. Victor Ifijeh, delivered a well-applauded welcome address.

He talked about the transparency of the promo, saying that officials of the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) and the Lagos State Lotteries Board (LSLB) were invited to prove that it was real. He invited Kanu to pick the first star prize winner. Asiegbu picked the second winner.

Kanu hailed The Nation for giving back to the society. The former Ajax, Inter Milan, Arsenal and Portsmouth striker congratulated the winners, urging them to continue patronising The Nation and Sporting Life.

Daramola, a Relationship Officer with Zenith Bank in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was emotional when he learnt that he was one of the star winners.

Speaking with The Nation after the draw, the father of two described the paper as his choice.

“Any human being will feel happy winning a car. I’m short for words. It’s like I’m still dreaming. I buy The Nation everyday because I enjoy reading columns of Omatseye; Gbenga Omotoso and Haruna Muhammed,” he said.

According to the 35-year-old, The Nation has restored his belief that not all promotions in the country are deceitful.

“Since I buy The Nation everyday, I believed that I did not have anything to lose if I entered for the draw. Though, I have a Toyota Corolla car, it is not a new one. Now, I am a proud owner of a brand new saloon car, courtesy of your newspaper. My investment in your company has finally paid off. I thank God,” he said.

Adeleke, another ardent reader of the newspaper, described his emergence as a miracle. The Nation, according to the 59-year-old, is simply the best among the national dailies.

“When I wanted to submit the entries, I prayed along with my family members to be one of the star prize winners and God answered our prayers. I give glory to God. The car has come at a time the one I am using is giving me problems. It is indeed a miracle,” he said.

Adeleke, who retired from the United Bank for Africa (UBA) in 1997, now markets Agro-Chemicals at a building materials’ market in Jos, Plateau State. He hailed The Nation’s management for the paper’s balanced reporting.

“The Nation is the only newspaper that is current and presents true reports; it is very current unlike other newspapers that publish stories we have read in The Nation a day earlier,” he added.

Mr Chidi Nwachukwu from Niger State who won a microwave also expressed happiness. Nwachukwu, a businessman, said the event showed that the country was changing for the better.
