The winners of the Lekki Admiralty Lion’s Club, District 404 A3 essay writing contest for public school pupils have been rewarded with exciting gifts and prizes.
Seven public schools participated in this year’s competition, with each school represented by three pupils.
The contest for pupils between 8 and 15 years was titled: “Lion Abidemi Olawumi Essay Writing Competition” to honour a late member of the club.
President of the club, Lion Adewale Akingboye, said the initiative is part of the club’s ongoing commitment to youth development and education in the community.
He said the competition is designed to sharpen English speaking skills, and address the low proficiency often observed among public school pupils. “We shall be giving prizes to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd best students from the writing competition.

The purpose of this is to encourage and inspire them. We also plan to donate books to every student who participates in this event, which will in turn boost their reading culture,” he said.
The Region Chairperson for the club, Lion Stella Ugbodu Atanosen, expressed concern over the declining reading culture among children in the digital age, noting that this trend was one of the key motivators for the initiative. “The culture of reading is gradually disappearing.
The foundation for good reading habits begins at home, and instead of letting children spend all their time on video games, parents should encourage them to read more,” she said.
She emphasised that cultivating this habit will benefit the children, helping them grow into more well-rounded individuals in society.
