  • Winners emerge in Lagos festival for girl child

The plight of out-of-school adolescent girls in Nigeria was the focus of this year’s Teenage Festival of Life organised by Action Health Incorporated (AHI), a Non-Governmental Organisation dedicated to promoting young people’s health and development.

The festival, held at the main auditorium of the University of Lagos featured various artistic performances weaved around the theme: ‘Assuring the well-being and development of out-of-school adolescent girls.’

Public and private secondary schools in Lagos State competed for laurels at the festival – thrilling the audience as they attempt to illustrate the hardship and hopes of the out-of-school girl child through drama, poetry and song.

The 222 participating schools where judged using parameters including legibility, correctness in grammar, use of Queen’s English and ability to translate essays into certain dramatic standard.

Fifty schools qualified for the finals, which saw Meiran Community Senior High School dwarfed them all in the drama category, with Tomia Community Senior Secondary School which led in the poetry category, with Arch Deacon Adelaja Senior High School, and Lagos State Senior Model emereged first and second runners up respectively.

AHI Chief Executive Officer Mr Esiet Uwem, said the event was organised to let victims of the aforementioned circumstances know that despite challenges, there is hope. He advised them to hold on to their dreams, and never compromise even at the toughest moment in their lives.

Uwen frowned that governments have failed the Nigerian youth.

“There is systemic violence where the state deprives the citizens of their right- right to education, health and every good things of life. Therefore, people want to get what  they presume should  be theirs in a situation where it is not available or not enough; this informs the motive of the survival of the fittest. So when the system fails, it is the young people that suffer the most”. He said.

Making reference to the UNESCO record of about 11 million out-of-school Nigerian children, Uwem condemned governments for lacking the will to incorporate them into the school system, noting that most leaders are less interested in politics of development.

According to him, slum communities in Lagos are the worst hit when it borders on poverty, as according to her, most girls in the area depend solely on illegal activities for sustenance.

He urged governments to invest appropriately in young people, create learning centers that are in close proximity to mostly pupils in remote areas .He equally admonished the society to cultivate the spirit of togetherness, noting that injury to one is injury to all.

A Senior Secondary II, of Community Senior Grammar School Odumor Sonia, noted that it is a general responsibility to respond to the needs of victims of such circumstances, enlighten and give them new orientation to have better future.

  • Falcons are group A winners

    • Beat Namibia 2-0

Two quick goals in the first half from Gloria Ofoegbu and Francisca Ordega helped the Super Falcons to secure a 2-0 win over the Brave Gladiators of Namibia in one of the last round of matches in Group A decided at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek, yesterday.

The scoreline perhaps flattered the coach Godwin Okon-tutored side as the Nigerian side which rested about seven key regulars fought desperately to keep the rampaging, young Namibians at bay in a partisan crowd that kept on cheering the home side.

In yesterday’s game, coach Okon opted to start veteran striker, Perpetua Nkwocha ahead of the tournament’s leading goalscorer, Desire Oparanozie but it was the young Namibians who, obviously in search of points to progress, took the match to the Nigerians.

The Brave Warriors star player, Zenatha Coleman should have put the host ahead in the early minutes but she kicked a sitter over the bar with goalkeeper Ibubeleye Whyte already beaten.

The Namibians would rue that miss later in the 35th minute when their goalkeeper Lydia Eixas committed a blunder by leaving her area to take a kick and Ofoegbu, who was playing her first game of the championship, curled the free kick into the net to give the Falcons the lead against the run of play.

Barely two minutes later, Sweden-based Francisca Ordega, who was unarguably Nigeria’s best player on the day, latched onto a pass from Esther Sunday, rounded up the Namibian goalkeeper and placed the ball in an empty net to double Nigerians’ lead.

In the second half, coach Okon brought in midfield maestro Halimatu Ayinde and Glory Iroka to stabilize the midfield as the Namibians continued to search for a morale-boosting goal which never came.

As the game was winding up, coach Okon gave another veteran, 36-year-old Stella Mbachu her first game of the tournament when she came in for Cecilia Nku in the 85th minute.

Having emerged as group winners, the Super Falcons will now face the runners up of Group B next week. The teams in Group B will play their last round of matches today simultaneously at the Independence Stadium and Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek.

  • N900,000 for street contest winners

    N900,000 for street contest winners

The management of 7Up Bottling Company has splashed N900, 000 on three football clubs which won a two-day five-a-side street football tournament in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State.

Many local teams participated in the competition which was held at the Abayi Umuocham Primary School field. Organisers of the tournament said it was to showcase the skills, strength and potentials of talents in the commercial city.

Concord, Chidex and Royal Stars football clubs went home with N500,000, N250,000 and N150,000, respectively, after winning the three top prizes. Over 100 teams registered for the tourney.

Mr. Victor Oladele, General Manager 7Up Bottling Company, Aba said the exercise was in line with the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) in giving back to its host community with a view to taking youths off the street and engaging their minds meaningfully.

Oladele said, “7Up Bottling Company wants to use the opportunity of the World Cup to showcase Nigerians and show that we have more talents than even those that are representing us at the World Cup in Brazil right now. We have many more talents all over the country and these people are being harnessed to really showcase their capacity and I know that from here, many coaches are looking at them and are picking the ones that are good and, of course, we are going to enrich football tournaments in Nigeria continuously.

“Our ultimate goal is actually to bring out talents in the country, showcase them to the world and of course put them on a pedestal that will make them being sought after by clubs and once they are sought after, they will make names for themselves and the country and Pepsi will be proud of that.

“But don’t forget also that 7up bottling company started Pepsi Academy in Nigeria and in this Pepsi academy, many people who are currently in the Nigeria Super Eagles grew up from Pepsi academy; Mikel Obi, Osaze Odewinge and so many others.”

On the sustainability of the programme Aba plant GM added, “we just started it this year, we are going to appraise the whole situation as it where in this particular tournament; having sat down and appraise it, if we see it as something that is sustainable, definitely it is going to become an annual event.”

Coach of the overall winner, Concord FC, Ezechukwu Obadiah and his team captain Christian Chukwukere said that they were happy to be the best in the competition, adding that they were going to invest the cash they won in the team.

Mr. Alexander Nnamdi, coach of Royal Stars FC, commended the organisers for such a wonderful initiative, adding “since five aside football competition is coming newly into the country, before a competition like this is organised, the guidelines of the competition should be given to us before the said date so that we can prepare effectively with it. I also wish that other companies should emulate Pepsi in organising this kind of competition regularly in Aba to bring out the best of these players.”

Abia State Commissioner of Sport, David Chigbu, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Elder Ogbonna Izima, expressed his satisfaction with the organisation, describing the gesture of the soft drink bottlers as a wake-up call to multinationals in Aba and the state to invest in sports in order to take the minds of youths away from crime.

“For me, it is one of the best things that have happened to street football around the country. We in the ministry were even surprised when 7up bottling company sent us a letter about this tournament, we are so happy and I am here live today to witness what it is all about and you know that when I get back to the ministry, we will develop on it. I know people would come here to cheer up their teams but for the rain, they couldn’t come.

“The competition has started and we will like to partner with Pepsi because before any team plays here, it must be registered with the bottling company and we will partner with them because it will boost these teams and even create more job opportunities. So the ministry is really going to do a lot in partnering with the bottling company.

“This competition is a wake-up call for other multinationals to design programmes that would take the youths off the streets and being violence. In partnering with 7Up bottling company, we will encourage other corporate bodies to develop sports, not only football; there are a lot of sporting activities which we can develop in Abia State. I think the ministry will now take a census of those corporate organizations that can in a way, support the state government through their involvement in developing sports programmes that will take the youths off the streets.”

    Northerners flee Imo over attack

There is tension in the Hausa community in Imo State, following the arrest of six suspects by the police in connection with the foiled terror attack on a church in Owerri.

Most of the Hausa, it was learnt, had fled their homes and other locations where they usually converged, for fear of attack by youths, who see them as security threats.

Some of the deserted areas are Onitsha/Owerri Road and Mbaise Road, where Hausa petty traders and labourers stay.

Police spokesman Andrew Enwerem, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspects had not been linked to the bombs planted at the Winners’ Chapel in Owerri. He said the nationalities of the suspects would not be made public to avoid compromise.

There is panic in the state, as people avoid crowded public places.

Most television viewing centres, where football fans converge, were empty on Monday night during the Nigeria-Iran match.

Parents and guardians have reportedly withdrawn their children and wards from the Winners’ Chapel school located on the church premises.

When our correspondent visited the school yesterday, it was in session, but attendance was low.
