    Again, Davido wins African artiste of the year

    For wave-making artiste Davido, 2014 is certainly the year of awards. The latest of his laurels came again last Saturday in faraway Dallas, United States, where he emerged African Artiste of the Year at the maiden edition of African Muzic Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA).

    This feat makes the third time the talented singer will be the awarded this year, having won the ‘Best West African Artiste’ diadems at the MTV Africa Music Awards and BET Awards.

    The Aye crooner defeated Wizkid, Flavour, Ghana’s Sarkodie, SA’s Mafikizolo and Tanzania’s Diamond to clinch the award.

    Okagbare wins 200m race in Paris

    Nigerias Blessing Okagbare won the womens 200m at the Paris Diamond League on Saturday after trailing American Allyson Felix off the bend.

    A savage dip at the line saw the 25-year old Nigerian finish in 22.32sec,with three-time world champion and current Olympic gold medallist Felix in second at just two-hundredths of a second.

    Reigning double Olympic 100m champion,Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, laboured in fifth (22.63) in a boost for Okagbare’s sprint intentions come Glasgow.

    “I think I now want to be seen more in sprints,these are the events followed most by the public,” said Okagbare, who stumbled out of the blocks in the 100m in Lausanne on Thursday and failed to finish.

    “I’m not sure about my plan for the Commonwealths,the sprints for sure and also the relay,but its not clear with the jumping”

    Okagbare won 200m bronze and long jump silver at the Moscow world championships last year.

    Unity Bank wins agric financing award

    Unity Bank Plc was adjudged the “Best Bank in Agriculture Financing” at the 2014 BusinessDay Annual Banking Awards.

    Speaking after he received the award on behalf of the bank, managing director, Unity Bank, Mr. Henry Semenitari, said it was not a surprise that the bank won the award this year because it had consistently been at the forefront of agric financing.

    According to him, the bank’s leading role in agric financing is evidenced in its wide range of agricultural products for both small scale and large scale farmers – collectively known as Unity Greens – which cover general agro-allied financing, industrial as well as cooperative leasing, support schemes and products.

    He noted that the bank is also widely acclaimed as one of the most active in the implementation of Federal Government’s multi- billion naira Agriculture Intervention Schemes such as the Commercial Agriculture Credit Scheme, Growth Enhancement Support Scheme (GES), NIRSAL, Agriculture Credit Guarantee Scheme and the Agriculture Trust Fund Model.

    “With over 150 branches along the Nigerian Agrarian belt, the bank has long recognized this positioning as an area in which it can make its impact felt,” Semenitari said.

    It would be recalled that the bank had in 2013 received recognition for its support of the Northern Economy from BusinessDay.

    Political Science wins speech contest

    No fewer than 30 departments at the Ekiti State University, (EKSU) jostled for this year’s interdepartmental speech contest organised by Junior Chamber International (JCI) at the Oodua Hall of the institution.

    All contestants spoke on “Challenges of nation building – Nigeria as a case study.”

    The introduction of the panel judges was greeted with jubilation by students, who described them as impartial.

    Members of the panel included Dr Ade Adeseke, Dr Ojo Ojo from the Department of English and Mr O. Ogunlade, an administrative staff in the university.

    Contestants spoke for three minutes each in the first round and two minutes in the last round. Faculty of Management Science had the highest number of representatives at the contest.

    After all contestants have spoken in the second round, certificate of participation was given to the contestants while the three judges compiled the result for the top three contestants.

    The President of the organisation, Alao Oluwatosin, a 400-Level student of Educational Management, used the medium in enlightening students on the aim behind the contest.

    Participants were excited when Kazeem Oluwasegun, was announced winner of the contest. Kazeem came third in last year’s edition of the contest.

    Dr Adeseke urged the organisation to continue with the good work of developing future leaders.

    Custodian wins top 25 CEO award

    Chief executive officer, Custodian and Allied Insurance Plc, Mr Wole Oshin, has been adjudged as one of the top 25 chief executives in Nigeria.

    Oshin was honoured at the Businessday Top 25 CEO Award as one of the top 25 distinguished chief executives of companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). The Top 25 CEOs Award is a yearly event which is meant to appreciate the contributions of the 25 CEOs who contributed the most to the growth of the capital market in a particular financial year.

    The Top 25 CEOs were honoured for having contributed 68 per cent of the gains in the capital market capitalisation in 2013. They ensured that their companies’ share price outperformed the All Share Index (ASI) of the NSE which closed the year at 47 per cent.

    According to the panel of judges, the contributions of the top CEOs amounted to 58 per cent of the nation’s budget in 2013. Custodian and Allied Insurance was among the only two companies in the insurance sub-sector which contributed to this achievement. The company worked tenaciously in 2013 to increase shareholders’ profit to N4 billion.

    Commenting on the award, Oshin said the award was a remarkable endorsement of the company’s growth.

    “This is an encouraging development. I am truly elated to receive this award. I would like to state that this achievement would not have been possible without the support of the Board, Management and Staff of Custodian, who worked as a team to get us to this level. We are glad that Custodian is contributing her quota to the GDP of the Nigerian economy and towards the improvement of the insurance sub –sector,” Oshin said.

    Lagos Island wins 2014 Ibile Games

    The absence of Yaba LCDA may have paved the way for Lagos Island Local Government to emerge as the new winners of Lagos State Sports Festival tagged IBILE Games 2014, which was concluded at the weekend at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

    Lagos Island topped the medals table of the Senior Category of the Games with 366 medals: 151 gold, 108 silver and 107 bronze medals.

    In second position are Team Surulere that won 109 medals: 36 gold, 32 silver and 41 bronze while Team Ibeju Lekki came third with 93 medals: 29 gold, 27 silver and 27 bronze medals.            Team Ojo came fourth with 78 medals comprising 25 gold, 29 silver and 24 bronze. In the fifth position are Team Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA) that won 63 medals: 24 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze.

    In the Junior category, which featured secondary school students in the state, schools with best performance in each of the 20 sports in this category were listed out by the Technical Sub-Committee headed by Babatunde Fatayi-Williams.

    Team Lagos City Senior College, Sabo, Yaba was outstanding in the boys’ category. They were the best school team in four sports – Wrestling, Handball, Badminton and Squash, while in the Girls’ category, Wesley Girls Junior Secondary School, Sabo, Yaba out- shined others in four sports: Weightlifting, Judo, Badminton and Squash.

    The football final, which was decided during the colourful final ceremony attended by Governor of Lagos State,  Babatunde Raji Fashola, Sir Molade Okoya Thomas and other important dignitaries, saw Ojo and Surulere Sports City Football Club playing a 1-1 draw in regulation time only for the Ojo team to win the football gold in the penalty shootout that ended 3-1.

    Director of Sports, Lagos Sports Council, Kweku Adebayo Tandoh said the Main Organising Committee (MOC) headed by the Commissioner for Sports, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, appreciated the support received from Governor Fashola, the Ministry of Education, corporate Nigeria, principals, Games Masters, technical officers, chairmen of all the participating local councils in the state and the spectators for the success and glamour of IBILE Games 2014.

    “As we close the IBILE Games, we invite you all to the South-West States Secondary Schools Games “DAWN Games” which holds in Lagos from  May16 to 24 ,” Tandoh said.

    No fewer than 180 secondary schools took part in this year’s IBILE Games with 39 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in attendance.

    Powerlifting World Championships: Nigeria wins more medals in Dubai

    Team Nigeria at the ongoing International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting World Championships in Dubai, yesterday continued their winning streak with an additional gold and a silver medals.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the recent medals has made it four gold, one silver and one bronze medal won by Nigeria at the championship.

    Samuel Ekeoma, the Technical Director, Nigeria Para-powerlifting Federation (NPPF), told NAN on telephone from Dubai that Abdulazeez Ibrahim clinched the fourth gold for Nigeria.

    Ekeoma said that Ibrahim lifted 235kg in the male 97kg weight category to win the gold.

    He added that Loveline Obiji won the silver with a lift of 142.5kg in the female 86kg weight category.

    NAN had earlier reported that Yakubu Adesokan won the first gold medal for Nigeria after breaking his own world record of 178kg in 46kg.

    Adesokan had earlier set the record at the 2012 London Olympic Games by lifting 181kg in the same weight category.

    Esther Onyema won the second gold after she had also set a new world record in the 55kg category.

    The new record erased her previous record of 122kg she set in 2013 Asian Open Championships in Malaysia with a lift of 125kg.

    The third gold was won by Ijeoma Ihurobiem in the female 73kg weight category, while Anthony Ulonnam won the bronze in the male 54kg.

    The director expressed the hope that Team Nigeria would not relent in their effort to win more medals for the country before the end of the championships.

    NAN reports that Nigeria is being represented at the championships by eight male and five female.

    The competition will end on April 11.

    Ike Diogu wins NBA D-League Player of the month

    Bakersfield Jam forward Ike Diogu was Thursday named NBA Development League Player of the Month for games played in March. The award is the first of Diogu’s career.

    Diogu (6-8, 255, Arizona State) led Bakersfield to a 10-3 record in March, including a 7-2 road record and a seven-game winning streak between March 12 and March 26. For the month, Diogu averaged 21.4 points, shooting 59 percent from the field, to go with 12.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks. He recorded a double-double in 12 of his 13 games in March, notching two 30-plus point outings.

    On March 19, Diogu recorded a season-high 19 rebounds to go with 30 points in a 114-106 road win over the Texas Legends. The following week, on March 30, he tied his season high with 32 points in a 115-109 win at the Santa Cruz Warriors.

    For the season, Diogu is averaging 18.0 points on 55 percent shooting, to go with 9.4 rebounds, good for sixth-best in the NBA D-League.

    Olaitan wins Greek title with Olympiacos

    Nigerian midfielder, Michael Olaitan collected his first Greek championship medal with Olympiacos on Saturday as Thrylos wrapped up the title with five games to spare.

    Olympiacos defeated Panthrakikos 2-0 at Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki after goals from Nelson Valdéz and David Fuster sealed the win on a memorable night.

    Olaitan was not listed in the game but his efforts earlier in the season and contribution to the cause will be greatly appreciated by the club’s supporters, his teammates and manager, Jose “Michel” Campo.

    The 25-year-old scored eight goals in 16 league appearances for the club until he was involved in a scary incident that saw him sidelined from action.

    On March 2, Olaitan collapsed unchallenged during Olympiacos’ game against bitter rivals, Panathinaikos at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki.

    The midfielder fell to the ground unchallenged during the first half and received medical attention before he was carried off on a stretcher.

    The 21-year-old, who was conscious as he left the pitch, was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for tests.

    The club have since announced that Olaitan is no longer in danger but the Nigerian is yet to be integrated back into the first team.
