  • Commanding exploits through divine wisdom!

Welcome to a new month of enviable testimonies and liftings! All through this month, we shall explore the force of divine wisdom which, I believe, shall impact on every area of our lives. It will also grant us an unusual access into the deep things of God; thereby, empowering us into next- levels of exploits after the order of Christ and bringing about supernatural turnarounds in our lives.  Therefore, I want you to get set for an impartation of supernatural wisdom via the teachings of this month.

We discover from scriptures that exploits answer largely to the operations and manifestations of divine wisdom. By ‘exploits’, we mean extraordinary accomplishments. It connotes breaking new grounds, and setting new records. It implies out of this world order of accomplishments and outstanding successes with strange impacts. As it is written: But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him (1 Corinthians 2:9).

However, while exploit is God’s agenda for the redeemed, it takes wisdom to experience it. In other words, divine wisdom is the bedrock of exploits and everything answers to its operations and manifestations. The Scripture says: Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding (Proverbs 4:7). Obviously, without divine wisdom at work, exploits will remain an uphill task. Thus, we cannot disregard divine wisdom and experience exploits.

    What, then, is Divine Wisdom?

Divine wisdom is the wisdom from above. It is superior to all other kinds of wisdom, and it generates mighty and inexplicable works. Divine wisdom is knowing the right thing to do from scriptures. Also, it is walking in the light of God’s Word as revealed from the scriptures. Furthermore, it is thinking, speaking and working the Word. Interestingly, this wisdom is peaceable, ‘track-able’ pure, easily entreated, full of good fruits, without partiality and hypocrisy. Thus, it delivers the same way and at the same rate to anyone who engages it; there is no racial discrimination or partiality associated with it (John 3:31; Romans 2:11). We must understand that God has reserved the strongest wave of divine wisdom for the end-time Church which is going to be the mystery behind their exploits (Ephesians 3:8-11).

Remember, divine wisdom is not strange to us as it has been since the time of old and individuals who operated by it experienced supernatural liftings and glory. There are diverse scriptural examples of individuals who traded divine wisdom and emerged men of exploits and conquest as exemplified in the following:

    • Joseph: Through divine wisdom, Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream and provided solution to the negative impact of the famine that was about to hit the land of Egypt. The Bible records: Thereafter, pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art…(Genesis 41:39-40).
    • Solomon: By divine wisdom, Solomon wrote 1005 songs and 3000 proverbs. Furthermore, the queen of Sheba heard of his fame and she came to see Solomon’s riches and test the depth of his wisdom. Subsequently, she was very impressed with Solomon’s wisdom and prosperity that she praise God for such a wise King (1 Kings 4:32).
    • Daniel: Among others, the display of the wisdom from above at work in Daniel empowered him to interpret the King’s dream which hitherto was too difficult for the magicians to do. This amazed king Nebuchadnezzar to the point that he… made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon( Daniel 2:48 , 1:20)

Like I have always said, the secret of men are in their stories. It is impossible to find any story on exploits that is not traced to divine wisdom.  We cannot have this kind of wisdom and not do exploit in life, which will put us ahead of others just like it did in the lives of the Patriarchs.  If the Patriarchs engaged it and turned them to men of exploits, I believed it is worth emulating.  Therefore, as you do, I see you moving unto ‘next levels’ of exploits after the order of Christ, In Jesus’ name! Welcome to your realm of unlimited possibilities! Remain ever blessed!

Nevertheless to gain access to this wisdom, you need to be born-again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • Folly as wisdom by P/Harcourt DisCo

SIR: There is an area in Port Harcourt designated Borikiri 11 by Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHED. This area comprises of an estimated 39,000 households.

For about six weeks now, power supply to this area has been extremely erratic.

Unfortunately, the reason is not because there is no power to distribute or because of dysfunctional equipment. At least two of the top officials of PHED responsible for supply to this area said Borikiri 11 is a “High revenue loss area”. So supply is kept to a minimum as a device to reduce revenue loss.

A good number of power consumers here have pre-paid meters; these cannot be part of the customers responsible for revenue loss; could they? The authorities have no answer to that.

If a subscriber on pre-paid meter pays for power and there is no supply, there should be a breach of contract whereby the power supply company is liable to pay damages should the matter go to court. This knowledge would, among reasonable men, make the power company realize that the method outline above for reducing their losses is counterproductive.

The company has been advised to hire security personnel and additional civil hands, and cut off supply lines to non-paying clientele and power thieves and patrol the area for recalcitrant customers.

In Rivers State, the young men at Obigbo resisted PHED revenue device by shutting down the Afam Station until the elders in the area prevailed on them to remove their barricades on the promise by PHED to resume supply on an acceptable scheme. The young men at Ogbu-Nu-Abali also reacted like the Obigbo youth with some damage to PHED equipment.

One wonders: is PHED waiting for youth in Borikiri 11 to go on the rampage before adopting reason?

This piece is written in the hope that some reasonable persons, especially in the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, the power ministry and in power company circles, who see this report, would take up the gauntlet and advise PHED to go on a course, better than the present.

  • Is invocation of the god of thunder beginning of wisdom or a means to an end?

I feel for my country Nigeria. Not because I have become a pessimist from my avowed incurable optimist’s position but because there are times in a life when your power of endurance is stretched to a breaking point.

I pray we haven’t gotten to the point of a smouldering cauldron about to boil over; and I beseech our dear President to rise up to the current situation and prove the patriotic zest of which he’s reputed. I know the man has the temperament of a cool and calculating manager but there are times when there’s virtue in quick-silver thinking and action.

The time is now: the tempo of the activities of herdsmen across the country has heightened to the point that government should rein them in now, so that the roof of the super-structure called Nigeria is not brought down on everybody’s head.

Cattle colony? What does this mean? Do we have cattle colonies in the U.K. and other parts of Europe as well as America where the number of cattle, mules, etc is many more than we have in all Africa put together.

The problem we have at hand is akin to a festering sore that requires a surgical operation and the Buhari regime is advised to take prompt action that transcends primordial or ethnic considerations before people resort to self-help.

A post on social media, credited to veteran newspaper manager, Akogun Tola Adeniyi wrote about a traditional ruler, Attah of Igala who was said to have invoked the wrath of thunder that instantly struck down dead their herds of cattle. That’s self-help, if the story is true, and urgent steps must be taken to arrest the situation before it gets out of hand.

Gani Adams earned his title as the Are Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland not cheaply; his exploits with Dr Fredrick Fasheun in mobilising the Yorubas under the Odua People’s Congress (OPC) in those heady days, belonged to the realm of legends and those who experienced that orgy of violence in defence of a race, will not pray for a recourse to that era. And similar deadly militant groups are spread across the country that must not be inadvertently provoked to dastardly action of reprisals.

A return to peace across the land is a task must be accomplished – for the sake of the privileged and the supposed underdog!

  • Embrace wisdom in your home (3)

Embrace wisdom in your home (3)

    Dear Reader,

One of my greatest joys would come when your home, life, marriage and relationship with God experiences a quantum leap. The truth is: these teachings are ordained to produce positive all-round results for you. Last week, I focused on how you can walk in wisdom in your home as a man. Today, I will be focusing on the women.

Wisdom, as you have learnt so far, is hearing the sayings of our Lord Jesus Christ and doing them. It is the correct application of knowledge. It demands that you take steps in applying correctly the knowledge God is bringing your way today via this teaching. Only then, will you begin to reap the fruits of a successful home. The Bible says: Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock (Matthew 7:24).

Wisdom is the principal thing on which all other aspects of life rest. A home is meant to be built for it to be successful. The Bible says: Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established (Proverbs 24:3). Therefore, to build a successful home, wisdom is required.

It is very important to know that every woman, according to God’s own design, has a home and whatever becomes of that home depends on the woman. The wise woman will always  engage all to make her home a delightsome place. The Word of God says: Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands (Proverbs 14:1). Do not operate in foolishness. Do not pluck down your home with your own hands; rather, operate in the wisdom of God. Abide with God’s instructions, they are not grievous. Even if you happen to be married to a man whose level of understanding is lower than yours, remember Abigail. Through her wisdom and understanding, she saved her home even though she had a foolish husband. The Bible says: Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb (1 Samuel 25:3).

Identify your husband’s weaknesses, and help him to work on them. Learn to appreciate his strengths and point out his errors in love. This is God’s wisdom! Embrace it! If you abide by God’s instruction, it will make your home precious before God and before men. Read carefully the testimony of a sister who wisely applied God’s Word as she was taught and obtained a positive result.

“I’ve been married for over 12 years now and what I’m enjoying now, I’ve never enjoyed since I got married. Our mother in the Lord preached and laid emphasis on wives being submissive to their husbands in everything, just like the church submits to Christ. She also said we were to be submissive in everything. I didn’t realise that I wasn’t totally submissive. I wept so much in church that day and went to the Lord saying, ‘Lord, from this day, I know that obedience is the key.’ And ever since, I’ve been enjoying what all my fasting and binding couldn’t deliver to me. I had done so many things to get my husband to love me—fasted, bound, loose—but I thank God that now it’s like I’m wedded anew. Not quite long, to confirm God’s faithfulness in my home, my husband gave me a cheque of one hundred thousand naira, which I have cashed. I now enjoy peace, love and harmony. The Lord has turned around the tides, just through my obedience to the Word. Praise God!”

When you embrace God’s wisdom, your home begins to shine as gold. People cannot help but be attracted to you, just as the glitter of gold attracts people. The Bible says: Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom maketh his face to shine (Ecclesiastes 8:1). I see you shinning more and more in your family life and in all your endeavours in Jesus’ name!

Applying God’s wisdom in your marriage as stated in His Word helps you to know how to speak positive and edifying words to your spouse and relate with your in-laws in genuine love. Wisdom is therefore, the principal thing in marriage. A wise woman will always know when and where to present matters before her husband. There is a due season for every word, you don’t just open your mouth any how to speak to your husband, you must locate a proper time. As it is written: She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness (Proverbs 31:26).

However, you must understand that the wisdom that builds a home can only come by surrendering your life to Christ. If you are reading this article and you are not born again, you need to do so today.  You should say this prayer in faith: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

  • Embrace wisdom in your home (2)

Embrace wisdom in your home (2)

    Dear Reader,

Last week, I took you through the various kinds of wisdom and how you can connect yourself to the wisdom of God. This week, we will be exploring how you can apply God’s wisdom in your home, family and marriage.

A recap from last week defines wisdom as knowing the scriptural way to go, the scriptural steps to take and the scriptural things to do. However, you may ask how then do I apply myself to this scriptural wisdom? Wisdom is hearing the sayings of God and doing them. It is the correct application of knowledge. It demands that you take steps in applying correctly all you will learn of God this month concerning your home. Only then, will you begin to reap the fruits of a successful home. The Bible says: Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock (Matthew 7:24).

The place of wisdom in building a successful home cannot be over-emphasized. The Bible says: Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding (Proverbs 4:7).

As a husband, the Bible instructs that you dwell with your wife according to knowledge. I like the way Amplified version of the Bible puts it. It says: In the same way you married men should live considerately with (your wives), with an intelligent recognition (of the marriage relation), honouring the woman (as physically) the weaker, but (realizing that you) are joint heirs of the grace (God’s unmerited favour of life, in order that your prayers may not be hindered and cut off.  (Otherwise you cannot pray effectively)  I Peter 3:7.

Men, when you understand the nature of your wife and walk according to that understanding, quarrels and tension are eradicated from your home. When you are knowledgeable about your wife, you will not put undue pressure on her because you will realise that she is not a robot. She is your wife, a mother and homemaker all together, and these roles place a demand on her. You must be considerate of her feelings and needs, and be available to attend to those needs.

From the above scripture, the second clause says, “giving honour unto the wife…” This implies that your wife is not to be treated as a slave or inferior, but you are to treat her with respect. Your wife should be sought and allowed to make her own contributions in the home no matter how little it may be.

Some men beat their wives as if they are beating a child; that’s foolishness. When a man beats his wife, he is not walking in God’s wisdom, rather he exhibits folly. The Bible says: Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him (Proverbs 26:4). No matter how provoked you are, you must never beat your wife. If you do that, you are simply beating yourself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church (Ephesians 5:29).

It is important to note that, beating your wife is a great sin against God. God hates it when any party deals treacherously/ deceptively in marriage. One of the common ways to deal treacherously with your spouse is when you engage in physical combat.

If you notice a fault in your spouse, do not turn it into a fight, malice, or engage in a cold war. Do not give room to strife, envy or begin to discuss and report your spouse to relations, the house help or friends who don’t know God at all.

My advice to the unmarried is that after all the ceremonies on your wedding day, go before the Lord and say: God this home is dedicated unto You; there is no situation or circumstance that will ever come our way that we cannot handle with You on our side. That was what my husband and I did, as soon as we got into the house we both knelt down, held our hands together and prayed ‘Father we don’t know how to do it, but we hand over this home to You and as long as we live in here there shall be no situation that cannot be under control in the name of Jesus! I am glad to say that years have rolled by and God has stayed faithful to that prayer. If you are married, you can also pray that prayer and rededicate your family unto God. If you can pray that prayer in sincerity, no one next door would hear you quarrel with your spouse again in Jesus name!

As a man, to possess the mind of Christ in managing your home, you need the wisdom of God. The first step to accessing this wisdom is by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour. You can do this by saying this prayer in faith: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today.

  • Embrace wisdom in your home (1)

Embrace wisdom in your home (1)

    Dear Reader,

God’s wisdom is the principal tool for exploits and relevance in the school of life. Without the wisdom of God in a man’s life, fulfilment of destiny is at stake. God’s wisdom bailed Joseph out of eternal imprisonment and also brought Daniel out of the slaughter house to the throne of life. The Bible contains various examples of people that have obtained good report by the operation of divine wisdom in their lives.

The truth is: There is a wisdom solution to every issue you are confronted with in life.  As you go through the teaching series for this month, may you connect to God’s wisdom that will announce you to your world in Jesus’ name!

    What then is Wisdom?

Wisdom is the correct application of knowledge. Webster’s dictionary definition of wisdom is:  True religion; godliness; piety; the knowledge and fear of God, sincere and uniform obedience to His commands.

From Scriptural perspective, wisdom is: Knowing the scriptural way to go, the scriptural steps to take and the scriptural things to do. Also, it is knowing the spiritual way to go, the spiritual steps to take and the spiritual things to do. In other words, wisdom is the application of Biblical knowledge to everyday life.

    Kinds of Wisdom

    • WORLDLY WISDOM: This is the accumulation of man’s tricks to preserve himself (without God). This kind of wisdom centres on natural senses. It is intellectual, i.e. book knowledge and could include all technological, scientific and intellectual efforts.
    • HEAVENLY WISDOM: This is God’s kind of wisdom; it is from above. The Bible says: But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy (James 3:17).

Heavenly wisdom is the work of the Holy Spirit revealed through the Word of God.

Also, it produces the fruit of the Spirit as seen in Galatians 5:22.

    • DEVILISH WISDOM: This is the type of wisdom that operates in the occultic realm. As it is written: This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish (James 3:15).

But, How Do You Connect to God’s Wisdom?

    New Birth:

Every encounter with God’s Wisdom starts with a relationship with Him; the only wise God. The Bible says: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding (Proverbs 9:10). Without salvation, you do not have access to God’s kind of wisdom and can only operate in earthly wisdom and common sense.  So, to operate with the wisdom of God, you need to be born again. You need to have the mind of Christ and this can only come by surrendering your life to Christ. The Bible says: For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).

    Prayer:

To have access to God’s wisdom, you also need to ask Him in prayer. God is ever ready to give His wisdom to those who ask Him in faith. It is written: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed (James 1:5-6).

    Soul Winning:

To acquire God’s wisdom, you need to attend to the heart beat of God which is soul winning. You need to tell others about the love of Christ. There are thousands of souls out there that have not experienced salvation. However, soul winning is a commandment from God. So, as you obey God’s commandment, wisdom is then released to you. As it is written: And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever (Daniel 12:3). The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise (Proverbs 11:30).

    Knowledge:

The devil plays on the ignorance of men, making them suffer for what they are not aware of. That shall not be your portion in Jesus’ name! What you need is the knowledge of God. Today, so many people are in a fix because they do not have what it takes to come out of their challenges. The Word of God says: My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge (Hosea 4:6). Seek for knowledge over the bugging issues confronting you by reading books, listening to anointed messages from God’s anointed vessels. The Bible says: A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength (Proverbs 24:5).

    Right Company:

The company you keep determines the level of wisdom you can operate in and your level of wisdom is what determines your worth in life. They say, show me your friend and I will tell you who you are and the Bible says: He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed (Proverbs 13:20).

Every encounter with God’s wisdom starts with a relationship with God, the only wise God. The Word of God says: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding (Proverbs 9:10). Without salvation, you don’t have access to the Wisdom of God which only comes by surrendering your life to Christ. However, you can say this prayer and be born again: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour.

  • Discharge your duties with wisdom, Ambode tells new CJ

Discharge your duties with wisdom, Ambode tells new CJ

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday swore in Justice Opeyemi Oke as the state’s Acting Chief Judge (CJ).

He urged her to discharge her duties with wisdom, candour and integrity.

Justice Oke, who was appointed to the Bench of the State High Court about 20 years ago, is taking over from Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade, who retired on September 24, having attained the statutory retirement age of 65.

At the swearing-in ceremony at Lagos House in Ikeja, the state capital, Ambode said her appointment was in line with judicial precedence and the long-aged tradition of succession by seniority on the bench.

He said while the State awaits the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), he considered it expedient to administer oath of office on Justice Oke in acting capacity without delay to avoid a vacuum in the leadership of the state Judiciary.

He said: “Over the years, the Lagos State Judiciary has been a beacon of promise for Nigeria, given its reputation for intellectual judicial pronouncements that have stood the test of time at our appellate courts.

“I am, therefore, confident that as you take up the leadership of the Judiciary today, though in an acting capacity, your Lordship will discharge the duties of this office with exemplary wisdom, candour and integrity.”

The governor noted that though the Judiciary is an independent arm of government, he said the success of government lies in collaboration and inter-dependence of the three arms of government.

According to him, the collaboration must be actualised without inhibiting the independent discharge of the functions of all.

Ambode assured Lagos residents that under his watch, the Executive and the Legislature would work with the Judiciary to entrench the rule of law and the safety of life and properties of the people.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of judicial officers as well as increasing their numbers to scale up justice dispensation.

He added: “Let me also reiterate this administration’s commitment to improve the welfare of judicial officers and increase the number of judges to dispense justice adequately and effectively. In the coming days, we will inaugurate the First DNA forensic centre in Nigeria.

“This is geared towards improving the quality of evidence gathered by security agencies, especially the police, and achieving a more scientific-led investigation, which invariably increases the confidence of the courts in arriving at a just conclusion of cases.”

Ambode expressed appreciation to Justice Atilade for her dedication and commitment to the service of the people.

Justice Commissioner Adeniji Kazeem said though Justice Oke was appointed on the basis of her seniority, but it came with the opportunity of having a seasoned jurist and judicial administrator to lead the state’s Judiciary.

  • Nigeria elevates wisdom of the dung-beetle

As you read, methodical folly becomes Nigeria’s perennial fascination. The gross and barbaric proliferates in plain sight. And society approves the descent down the pole of morality and civilisation. Thus men and women with character of a dung-beetle, the scarab, are worshipped and glorified as rare gems.

On the watch of such characters, the democracy we declared recoils into a spent shadow. The scarab was primeval Egypt’s minister of decay, her epitome of muck and amorality. In Nigeria, scarabaeans dominate the corridors of power. They have turned government into a death cult, a painted tomb of justice and progress.

Seventeen years on, in the grip of such blood-drenched mascots, democracy afflicts us like the proverbial slut making a surreptitious exit with her drunken lover’s wallet. Consequently, we suffer poverty of character and this manifests as quiet, wily, mean-spiritedness; akin to the patience of the wild that holds motionless for endless hours, the corrupt police at illicit checkpoints, the kidnapper in his lair, the assassin in his ambuscade and the thieving public officer on his perch. This patience is illustrative of the predator hunting its prey.

Oftentimes, it manifests in uncontrollable spasms that have seen us bury our best and elevate our worst, in abject negation of the cycle of morality and the universe.

In such stew and stink, many a Nigerian of commonplace roots live through each day without ever contemplating or criticizing their living conditions. They find themselves born into dehumanising squalor or somewhat indecent circumstances and they accept such sordidness as their fate and exhibit no conscious effort to better their lot, beyond what their immediate circumstances dictate.

Almost as impulsively as the beasts of the wild, they seek the satisfaction of the needs of the moment, without much forethought and consideration that by sufficient endeavor, they just might improve their living conditions. However, a certain percentage – comprising men and women of privilege – guided by personal ambition, consciously strive in thought and will to attain higher status but very few among these are concerned enough to secure for all, the advantages which they seek for themselves.

Very few men are indeed capable of humaneness that inspires martyrs to persistently rebel against glaring social evils, in the interest of less fortunate members of the society. But there exists a few however, that are truly bothered by the impoverishment of their fellow citizens regardless of any risk or discomfort it might attract to them personally.

These few, driven by compassion, tirelessly seek first in thought and then in action, for some way of escape; some new system of society by which life may become richer, more joyful and devoid of avertable evils that mars the present. But surprisingly, such men oftentimes, fail to curry the support of the very victims of the injustices they wish to end.

This is because more unfortunate sections of the Nigerian populace are hopelessly ignorant, apathetic from excess of toil and disillusionment, apprehensive through the imminent danger of instantaneous chastisement by the ruling class, and morally defective, owing to the loss of self-respect resulting from their degradation.

Thus despite our claims to modernity, higher education, sophistication and relative rise in the standard of comfort among wage-earners in the country, the Nigerian society have failed to achieve better living conditions and a better society even in the throes of rising demand for more radical intervention and reconstruction of the social order.

It is no surprise however that the Nigerian citizenry has persistently proved a dismal failure. And the reasons are hardly far-fetched: Nigerians have a problem with differentiating between appropriate and inappropriate political behavior.  That is why the nation’s democratic experiment like any other system of governance practicable by us was doomed from the start.

What exactly has democracy offered? A 4-1-9 progressive plan that booms circumspectly like it had been doctored as part of a cold-war era propagandist scheme. But despite our self-righteousness and persistent cynicism about the current order, we really cannot explore a more worthy alternative than what we have now. The average Nigerian can’t bear to be led by a truly honest, visionary and accountable leadership.

Apparently, we possess an overwhelming and oft-convincing inclination to self-destruct thus our lack of a coherent and defensible political ideology essential to the evolution of a progressive leadership and state.

The average Nigerian is no more electable than the leadership he endures yet he loves to speak truth to power; even as he simultaneously smothers his protests by extolling the ruling class, whose dominance he seeks to terminate. No matter who is elected, the demographic and economic realities of Nigeria will persist, and there is a very limited range of politically-viable solutions for dealing with them.

It’s about time Nigerians consciously evolved in thought and will, in pursuit of saner social order. But such conscious evolution can only be achieved by re-orientation in scholarship and purification of though.

The foundations of scholarship and knowledge must be tirelessly reconstructed to guarantee more progressive responses to internal problems of social advance — problems of work and wages, of families and homes, of morals and the true value of life – and all these and other inevitable problems of civilization must be resolvable largely by elected representatives of the people by reason of their exposure, leadership skills and humane constitution.

This informs a greater need for study and thought. It requires appeal to the rich experience of past and current mistakes, in the journey towards the reduction to the barest minimum, the possibility of future mistakes. The answer to Nigeria’s widening income and social gap – which has so far manifested in preventable crises and persistent state of insecurity – is to found an educational process geared to steer successfully, the commonplace trains of thought away from the dilettante and the fool stereotype.

It’s about time poor, struggling members of the nation’s working class and youth divide, scorned the maxim that holds that their worries are always reducible to a cup of rice, a loaf of bread or paltry bribe. The paths to stable peace and security winds between honest toil and dignified manhood.

The better society that we seek requires the guidance of skilled thinkers, the loving, reverent comradeship between the low income earners and ambitious middle class, emancipated by training and culture.

Such human elements would no doubt be conscious of the fact that not even the sustenance of oil subsidy, higher wages and a fairer economic system could protect its members from the usual handicaps and monstrosity constituted by the incumbent and predatory ruling class.

Hence they would be able to understand that positive change, must be mooted and achieved by upright youth and working class, in further substantiation of their capacities to assimilate the culture and refinement of humane civilization.

A veritable step towards such reality is to vote the incumbent administration out of office and elect a younger, less ethnic, less directionless, visionary and benevolent leadership. But to achieve this, the youth must establish a more truly progressive, vibrant and detribalised social and political platform.

  • Poignant wisdom of Mphalele

SIR: Ezekiel Mphalele was a South African journalist who aptly captured the vivid contrasts between Nigeria and South Africa. Writing sometime around 1982, Mphalele was struck with amazement, on his visit to Lagos, that luxury Mercedes and sundry cars were parked in the open by street kerbs because the owners of these automobiles were essentially one-room apartment tenants with no garages to park their cars. The contrast that was so amazingly glaring to Mphalele was that in South Africa, the citizens would rather invest the huge sums of money used to purchase those cars in comfortable, hygienic, long-term apartment lease-hood and simply get-by by public transportation. The poignancy in Mphalele’s wisdom just struck me recently when it occurred to me that the prevailing cost of the now-popular Toyota Corolla would pay for a decent three-bedroom apartment over here in Minna, Niger State, for eight years; yet this car does not have that eight-year wear-and-tear aesthetic tolerance and the folks who “cruise” around this car model in town are not much cool with three-bedroom decent apartments because for a semi-rural town like Minna, a 300 thousand per-annum three-bedroom flat can only be located in a plush part of town; a lot of these car model owners thoroughly “abuse” these cars because they live in rough-and-tumble neighbourhoods. Basically, the South Africans have a more refined sense of appreciation of order and beauty than us Nigerians however we may not like this fact.

  • ‘Punishment teaches wisdom’

Living Springs Schools, Lekki Executive Director Mrs Abosede Obayomi, has said punishment is good for pupils as it makes them wise.

She said pupils must be trained to shy away from telling lies or shifting blame to others because of the fear of punishment. She spoke during the 8th annual valecdictory and prize giving day.

She said rather they should be taught to embrace their fears so that they would not be liars.

“Pupils should be taught to tell the truth at all times. They should be able to stand tall and firm for the truth.  Fear of punishment should not make them act otherwise”, Mrs Obayomi said.

Twenty preschoolers moved to the elementary school while six elementary pupils graduated to high school.

The valedictorian, Master Oghenekeno Oki, showed gratitude to God as well as the teachers for their various contributions to his life.

He charged his peers to be prepared for the task ahead as they take on heavier responsibilities, learn new lessons and reach for more goals.

Oki said: “Dear friends, let us not allow the world’s definition of what is possible keep us from achieving what we want to achieve. Let us not only dream, let us dream grandly. Let us not only reach for the mountaintop, let us reach for the stars.”

One of the highlights of the event was the music ministration by the pupils as well as the orchestra. The pupils also partook in choreography and ballet dance.

The workers were not left out as some of them got awards.

Mr Adewale Sanjo and Mrs Judith Okundalaye were awarded best teacher of the year male and female categories.
