EPL: Man City get first win in five league games after beating Wolves

Omar Marmoush scored his first Premier League goal of the season to help Manchester City return to winning ways by easing past bottom side Wolves at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side had suffered a miserable start to 2026 by not winning any of their four league games, and the Spaniard decided to give star striker Erling Haaland and midfielder Phil Foden a rest by dropping them to the bench.

The duo came on in the second half by which time their team-mates had already made a positive impact to put City back on track in the top-flight.

Both sides set their stalls out early on, with visitors Wolves opting to sit back with a five-man defence, but City exerted their dominance by carving them open at will inside the first 10 minutes.

Debutant Marc Guehi almost made a dream start in a City shirt but his header at the back post was straight into the grasp of goalkeeper Jose Sa inside the first five minutes.

City grabbed the lead a minute later when Marmoush stabbed home Matheus Nunes’ whipped cross, before Semenyo latched on to a ball over the top but his first-time strike was bundled away by Sa.

The hosts doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time to effectively seal the points when Bernardo Silva fizzed a pass into the feet of Semenyo, who converted a cool finish from the edge of the area – and he also rattled the crossbar in the second half.

Yerson Mosquera’s flicked header clipped the crossbar for Wolves late on, but Rob Edwards’ side have now won just once all season and lie 14 points adrift of safety.

EPL: Wolves get first win of season after beating West Ham

Wolves finally secured a first Premier League win of the season at the 20th attempt as they made light work of fellow strugglers West Ham at Molineux.

This was Rob Edwards’ first win as Wolves head coach and the team’s first league victory since beating Leicester City on April 26, 2025.

At a stroke, the league’s bottom side doubled their points tally for the season to six, thanks to first-half goals from Jhon Arias, Hwang Hee-chan and Mateus Mane.

A sorry West Ham side failed to muster a response after the break and remain 18th with 14 points – four fewer than Nottingham Forest above them.

With two of the league’s worst defences in action, goals were always likely and it only took the hosts four minutes to make a breakthrough.

Hwang darted into the box and glided past Konstantinos Mavropanos before cutting back for an unmarked Arias to tap home from six yards – the Colombian’s first goal in a Wolves shirt.

The early breakthrough injected belief into the home side, who were awarded a penalty when Mane was clattered by the high boot of Soungoutou Magassa.

Hwang sent the spot-kick straight down the middle to make it 2-0 in the 31st minute before Mane added a third 10 minutes later.

With no Hammers defender closing him down, the 18-year-old Mane sent a powerful low drive from outside the box that beat Alphonse Areola at the near post, giving the youngster a first goal of his senior career.

The second half was more evenly contested but the early damage was beyond repair for West Ham, whose winless run has now reached nine matches.

Manchester United 1-1 Wolves: Visitors end 11-match losing streak against disapapointing Red Devils

Wolves ended their 11-match Premier League losing streak and manager Rob Edwards grabbed his first point as manager as his side held a disappointing Manchester United, who were booed off at Old Trafford.

Without eight senior players due to a combination of injuries and international calls, United were far from their best but still managed to go in front thanks to Joshua Zirkzee’s deflected 27th-minute effort.

However, Wolves began to force the pace towards the end of the opening period and after United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had kept a Hugo Bueno effort out, Ladislav Krejci levelled with a header from eight yards after he was given far too much room at the far post.

Lammens denied Krejci a second after half-time, when he dived to his left to parry a low shot and then got the ball away from danger as Yerson Mosquera closed in.

Ironically, Mosquera came close for the home side when he headed the ball past Jose Sa and towards his own goal. Fortunately for the Colombian, Sa got back to retrieve the situation just before the ball bounced in.

Sa had already been at the centre of one unusual incident when he was penalised by referee Thomas Bramall for holding onto the ball longer than eight seconds. It was only the third time the new rule has been applied in the Premier League this season but the home side could make nothing of the corner that followed.

Jhon Arias came close to a winner for the visitors with a shot that deflected narrowly wide and Patrick Dorgu then thought he had scored for the hosts in the final minute but a lengthy video assistant referee check confirmed the offside decision against him was correct.

It was Wolves’ third draw – and point – of the season, and their first since 5 October, although does not do much for their survival chances as they are still 15 points from safety.

For United, it was another example of their many shortcomings and a result that prevented Ruben Amorim’s side ending 2025 in an unlikely fourth spot – they remain sixth.

Wolverhampton, meanwhile, must quickly regroup after another setback in their fight to escape the relegation zone.

Brighton’s Van Hecke’s late header denies Wolves first Premier League win

Jan Paul van Hecke’s late header snatched a point for Brighton and denied Wolves their first Premier League win of the season in a dramatic encounter at Molineux, which also saw Wolves boss Vitor Pereira sent off.

Wolves remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just two points from seven games after Sunday’s 1-1 draw.

The hosts took the lead in the first half through an unfortunate own goal by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, whose back deflection off the bar from Marshall Munetsi’s strike put Wolves ahead.

The goal came moments after Pereira was shown a red card by referee Jarred Gillett for kicking a ball into the broadcasters’ dugout in frustration over a denied free-kick.

Despite the setback, Wolves showed renewed energy and looked close to sealing their first league win since April. Jhon Arias missed a golden opportunity to double the lead when he fired over, while Jorgen Strand Larsen struck the post with 15 minutes remaining.

At the other end, Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone pulled off a brilliant save to deny Georginio Rutter’s equaliser, but Brighton eventually found a breakthrough when Van Hecke powered home a header four minutes from time to secure a late draw for the visitors.

The result extended Wolves’ winless run and piled further pressure on Pereira as his side continued to search for their first Premier League victory of the campaign.

EPL: Woltemade scores on debut as Newcastle beat Wolves

Nick Woltemade enjoyed a debut to remember after his bullet header helped Newcastle United end their wait for a first win of the season against Wolves.

The German, who completed a club record £69m move from Stuttgart on 30 August, was handed a rapturous welcome by the home support at St James’ Park.

And it did not take the towering forward long to repay their backing.

Woltemade peeled away from Wolves defender Emmanuel Agbadou in the 29th minute to power a header past Sam Johnstone after getting on the end of Jacob Murphy’s scooped cross.

Newcastle pushed for a second and Sandro Tonali saw a 20-yard effort strike the inside of the post before half-time.

Wolves struggled to get back into the game after previously making a bright start to the game.

In fact, Wolves looked the likelier scorers at one point after Rodrigo Gomes and Hwang Hee-chan both had efforts well saved by Nick Pope early on.

But Vitor Pereira’s side’s wait for a first point of the campaign goes on.

  • Wolves lead race for Arokodare amid Milan interest

Wolves lead race for Arokodare amid Milan interest

Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare is at the centre of a late-window transfer tussle, with Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers emerging as front-runners for his signature.

According to The Guardian’s transfer gossip column, Wolves are making strong progress in their pursuit of the Genk top scorer, with discussions advancing positively.

Reports from Molineux News claimed that Arokodare has a gentleman’s agreement with Genk that would allow him to leave if an offer in the region of €20–25 million arrives. The player himself is understood to favour a move to the Premier League, and personal terms are expected to be straightforward.

In a related development, AC Milan have  reportedly intensified their interest, with Italian outlets confirming initial contact with Genk.

Report further revealed that Arokodare is “open to a move” to the Italian giants, keeping Milan firmly in contention.

Premier League sides Fulham and Burnley remain linked with the striker, both keen to add firepower before the window shuts. Across Europe, Benfica and Besiktas are also monitoring the situation closely, waiting for potential developments.

Genk, however, are not under pressure to sell cheaply since Manager Thorsten Fink previously dismissed early summer speculation as mere rumours, insisting no formal bids had arrived at that time.

With multiple clubs now circling, the Belgian club are said to be holding out for a fee higher than the €20 million they received for Paul Onuachu in 2023.

With Wolves leading negotiations and Arokodare leaning toward England, the Premier League side looks well-placed to secure the Super Eagles forward. Still, with Milan and other suitors lurking, a late twist cannot be ruled out before the transfer deadline.

Unless a rival club moves quickly with a higher bid, Arokodare’s next destination could well be Molineux, with a €20–25 million deal looking increasingly likely.

Manchester City have signed Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri for £31m.

The 24-year-old Algeria defender has signed a contract until 2030 and is available for the group stage of the Club World Cup.

City begin their campaign in the newly-expanded tournament against Moroccan club Wydad AC on 18 June.

Algeria international Ait-Nouri joined Wolves in a £14.9m deal from Angers in 2021, having spent the previous season on loan, and made 41 appearances in all competitions last term as the club avoided relegation, scoring five goals and adding seven assists.

Man Utd confirm deal for Wolves’ Cunha

Manchester United have agreed a deal with Wolves for the signing of Brazil forward Matheus Cunha.

The 26-year-old is set to become United’s first signing of the summer after the club activated a £62.5m release clause in Cunha’s Wolves contract.

The former Atletico Madrid player will sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12 months.

Cunha was in Manchester over the weekend to complete a medical with the club.

The deal, which is subject to visa approval and registration procedures, is expected to be completed once Cunha returns from international duty with Brazil later this month.

He joined the club in a £35m deal from Atletico Madrid, following a successful six-month loan spell the previous season.

EPL: Arsenal beat Wolves despite Lewis-Skelly red

Riccardo Calafiori fired 10-man Arsenal to a Premier League win at Wolves after Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card.

Referee Michael Oliver’s first-half decision to send off Lewis-Skelly – after he fouled Matt Doherty 30 yards from the hosts’ goal to stop the Wolves defender breaking from a corner – stunned the Gunners.

At 18 years and 121 days, Lewis-Skelly became the third youngest player to be sent off in the Premier League, behind Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen.

Joao Gomes’ dismissal, for a second yellow card after a foul on Jurrien Timber with 20 minutes left, was more routine but it will be no more than a footnote.

Lewis-Skelly’s red could have had an immediate impact on the title race if the second-placed Gunners dropped points to fall further behind leaders Liverpool, who beat Ipswich 4-1.

But they showed resilience to snatch the victory thanks to Calafiori, on as a substitute following a half-time reshuffle.

The defender’s fine low finish with 16 minutes left kept the Gunners six points adrift of Liverpool.

Myles-Skelly’s 43rd-minute red ignited what had been a forgettable game, with the only early talking point Wolves fans’ chants against owners Fosun, calling on them to “back the team or sell the club” with their side 17th in the table.

Pablo Sarabia volleyed over and Kai Havertz nodded wide before he was denied by Jose Sa.

Havertz again went close after the break with Matheus Cunha threatening twice before Calafiori pounced.
