  • Woman arraigned for ‘dud cheques’

    A 43-year-old businesswoman, Christy Essien, has been arraigned at a Wuse, Zone 6 Chief Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly issuing dud cheques for loan repayment.

    Essien, who lives at Mararaba, Nasarawa State, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of criminal breach of trust, cheating and issuance of dud cheque.

    Prosecutor Anthony Nku told the court Emmanuel Egwuma, of Colindale Empowerment Resources Ltd, Mararaba, reported the matter at Maitama Police Station, Abuja, on May 3.

    He alleged the defendant obtained a loan of N800,000 from the complainant’s office, and promised to pay back within three months with seven per cent interest rate.  The prosecutor said when the time elapsed, the defendant issued a Heritage Bank cheque of N326,000, and Diamond Bank cheque of N 978,000.

    He alleged both cheques bounced when the complainant presented them for payment.

    The offences contravene sections 312, 322 and 1B of Dud Cheque Act, Cap 102 Law of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Chief Magistrate Theresa Otu granted bail to the defendant at N200,000 with two sureties.

    She adjourned the case till August 22 for hearing.

  • Woman arraigned for child theft

    A 30-year-old woman, Elizabeth Ibezim has been arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly stealing a two-year-old girl in a market.

    Prosecuting Inspector Benson Emeurhi told the court on Monday that Elizabeth committed the offence May 22 at Mile 12 market area of Lagos.

    Benson informed the court that the defendant was caught with a two-year-old Ramadanat Mutinu around 10.30am in the market

    Elizabeth pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat granted the defendant N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She ordered the addresses of the sureties to be verified.

    She adjourned the case till July 9.

    Woman arraigned for alleged N1.4m fraud

    A middle-aged woman, Mrs. Hope Udom, was yesterday arraigned at an Upper Area Court, Abuja for allegedly defrauding another woman of N1.4 million.

    She pleaded not guilty on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and cheating.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Adenyi Oyeyemi, told the court that Miss Blessing Kalu of Nyanya, FCT reported the matter at Garki Police Station on May 18, 2017.

    He said the complainant boarded a vehicle with the defendant and two others, now at large, while travelling to Apo village, adding that they pretended to be passengers.

    Oyeyemi alleged that they deceived her and took her to a shrine at Life Camp area where they deceitfully collected N400, 000 from her.

    He said the defendant conspired and gave the complainant her United Bank for Africa (UBA) account number 2071211426, which bore her name, to pay in the money.

    “She defrauded her of another N1 million, which she confessed to during interrogation,’’ the prosecutor added.

    The judge, Mr. Sidi Bello, admitted the defendant to bail at N1.5 million with a surety.

    The case was adjourned till April 10 for hearing.

    Woman arraigned for N.9m fraud

    A 32-year-old woman, Idowu Adefila, yesterday appeared at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for allegedly defrauding five persons of N.9 million.

    The accused, of no fixed address, is being tried on a one-count charge of obtaining N985,000 from victims underfalse pretences.

    The prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in 2011 at Ekute quarters, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained N355,000 from Owolabi Demilade, N40,000 from Kehinde Oladapo and N350,000 from Atinuke Ajayi.

    Other victims are Akinrulure Funmilayo, who was allegedly defrauded of N160,000 and Bamgboye Oyewole, who was allegedly fleeced of N80,000.

    Okunade said the offences contravened Section 421 of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Vol.1 Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    He asked the court for adjournment to enable him study the case file and present witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Her counsel, Mr. Gbenga Bejide, urged the court to grant her bail, promising she will not jump bail.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adesoji Adegboye, granted bail to the defendant at N200,000 with two sureties.

    He adjourned the case till November 29 for hearing.

    Woman arraigned for biting off co-tenant’s finger

    The Edo State Police Command has arraigned a 30-year-old woman, Rita Egharevba, before an Oredo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly biting off a finger of her co-tenant, Mrs. Maureen Ekwase.

    Police prosecutor Sylvester Omor, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), told the court that the incident occurred during a fight on September 15, at 21, Isibor Street, off Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Road in Benin, the state capital.

    Omor said Mrs Ekwase allegedly caught Egharevba urinating near the path to her (Mrs Ekwase’s) apartment.

    Counsel to the victim, E. O. Unuareokpa, said although his client wanted to settle out-of-court, the victim was asking for N1 million. Unareokpa said his client offered N250,000, adding that the victim refused an advance payment of N20,000.

    Mrs Ekwase denied demanding N1 million, urging the court to continue with the case.

    The offence contravenes Section 332 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 48, Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976, as applicable to Edo State.

    The Magistrate, Mrs C. A. Nwoha, had granted bail to the accused for N150,000 and two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the matter till October 12 for hearing.
