  • Woman spots suspected attacker in shop

An armed robbery suspect, Sunday Nwaba, has been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command, after he was allegedly spotted in a shop by his victim, Mary Inedu.

According to the police, Nwaba is part of a taxi robbery syndicate operating around Ajah.

The police said last September 12, Inedu boarded a cab at a bus stop near Ajah.

Unknown to her, the driver and two passengers in the unregistered Honda Civic Saloon car were ‘armed robbers’.

They drove towards Ajah, where she was forcibly disposed of her Techno W3 phone valued at N15,000 and her Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card.

She was compelled to reveal her pin, following which one of the men got off and went to withdraw money from her account, before they let her go.

Inedu quickly called her bank and the ATM card was blocked.

The following day the robbers tried to withdraw money from her account with the card, but it was trapped by the ATM.

On September 14, Inedu was buying foodstuff at a shop near her home in Ajah when one of the suspects allegedly walked by. She recognised him and raised the alarm, following which Nwaba was apprehended by passers-by.

A police source said the case was under investigation while efforts were on to arrest the fleeing members of the gang.

  • Woman kills husband in acid attack

Woman kills husband in acid attack

A housewife and mother of four, Mrs Augustina Ihugba, is on the run after allegedly bathing her husband, Raymond Ihugba, with raw acid that caused his death.

The woman’s action has thrown Akwakwuma community   in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State into mourning.

A source close to the family, who spoke in confidence, said the woman accused her 50-year-old husband of adultery.

Ihugba was said to have denied the allegation, yet his wife attacked him with acid at a building site where he was working as a mason.

The remains of the victim have been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, the state capital, pending police investigation.

The mother of the victim, Eunice Ihugba, who tearfully recounted the incident, said trouble started between her son and his wife when the latter began to make financial demands from her son, despite his lean resources.

The widow, who lost her husband during the Nigerian/Biafran Civil War, said her son’s persistent pleas to his wife to bear with him proved fruitless.

She said her daughter-in-law trailed her husband to Ubommiri community in Mbaitoli Local Government Area to attack him.

Madam Ihugba said Augustina rushed at him, poured the acid on him and fled.

She added that the victim’s painful cry attracted passers-by who took him to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, where he died.

Also, effort to reach police spokesman Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), at the time of this report was futile.

  • Woman, three others in court for ‘N55.6m fraud’

Chief Magistrate Isokari Andrew-Jaja of Rivers State Magistrates’ Court yesterday granted bail at N400,000 to four suspects, who allegedly defrauded Amazing Benjamin Okechukwu of N55.6 million.

They are Rita Ogbe, 32, Precious Fine, 21, Victor Nwani and Gideon Uchenna.

They allegedly obtained N55, 660,000.00 from Okechukwu, an oil merchant, on the pretext of supplying him with 30,000 metric tons of diesel.

The alleged crime was reportedly carried out between July 21 and August 25 at Rumuigbo in Obio/Akpor Local Government.

The suspects were charged with five-count on unlawful conversion, fraud and impersonation.

They were represented by a lawyer.

Police prosecutor T. Igo told the court that the suspects allegedly committed the offence on July 21.

According to him, their offence contravenes sections 8 (a) and 8 (a) (c) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act Cap. A6 Laws of the Federation, Nigeria 2006; sections 390 (8) (d) and 473 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Volume II Laws of Rivers State Nigeria 1999 and Section 7 (4) (b) (1) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act Cap 38 Laws of the Federation 1999.

Andrew-Jaja granted them bail at N400,000 each, saying the surety must present two colour passport photographs and must be resident in Port Harcourt.

He said the surety must be a director in a reputable company in Port Harcourt, who must attach a photocopy of certificate of incorporation and receipt of tax clearance between 2014 and 2016.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case till October 23 pending advice from Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

  • Behind a successful woman is a man

Behind a successful woman is a man

When Prof. Juliana Taiwo Makinde told her story at the 307th Inaugural Lecture of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, on September 12, it showed that behind a successful woman is a man.

“I feel proud and highly honoured to say that I am the first female Professor of Public Administration in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and also the first female Professor to give an Inaugural Lecture in the Department of Public Administration, OAU, Ile-Ife,” she said.  Her focus was:  “Policy Somersaults, Poverty of Policy Implementation and Corruption: Obstacles to Development in Nigeria.”

The story of her journey to a professorial chair is striking for its central lesson in the power of possibilities. Her narrative: “I never dreamt in my wildest imagination of becoming a university lecturer, let alone a professor.  My standing here before you to present my Inaugural Lecture is, therefore, a special privilege from God who has used my husband, Professor Moses Akinola Makinde, as His instrument of positive change in my life.”

“I started my career as a confidential secretary in the mid-60s after the completion of my secondary education in 1965.  At a point in my career as a secretary, my husband was always drumming it into my ears that I have great potential to join him as an academic later in my life. The way to the fulfillment of his wish for me was opened in 1983 when he went on Fulbright Fellowship to Ohio University, US. Our children (Akinola, Olumide and Kayode) and I accompanied him to the United States where he persuaded me to enroll for a degree programme even though my own intention was to work and make money with which I planned to get some gadgets for our home back in Nigeria.  I got an admission into the Ohio University after performing brilliantly in the prescribed test for foreign students. I enrolled in the Faculty of Education to read Education/English and my performance got me on to the Dean’s list in that first year.”

She continued: “We came back home after one year and I got an admission into the Faculty of Education, University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) to continue with my degree programme in 1984, having brought my transcript from Ohio University. By the reason of my age among the young students, I became an automatic auntie to almost all my mates except a few mamas like me in the class.  By 1987, I completed my first degree programme with First Class Honours in Education/English.  My husband was excited and very happy.   He then persuaded me to go for a higher degree in order not to waste the first class degree that I had, always telling me that with my first class degree, I was a professorial material.  I agreed to go ahead on the condition that he would give me N200 a month throughout the programme. This was just to discourage him from persuading me from going further. To my disappointment, he agreed and I applied for and got admission to do M.Phil (Public Administration) in Obafemi Awolowo University, but ended up doing MPA.”

“While still in the public service with my MPA degree, I was appointed as Special Adviser (Administration and Protocol) in 1992 during the administration of the late Alhaji Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke of blessed memory – courtesy of my husband’s involvement as a member of the “Think Tank” in the political activities of the state at that time, even though he is from Ekiti in the then Ondo State.  He actually turned down the position he was given and recommended me instead. In November 1993, however, all civil servants-turned politicians were retired by General Sani Abacha and that brought an end to my career in the state public service.”

Another door opened. Mrs Makinde said: “My journey into the academics started in March 1994. I was only 45 years old when I was retired even though I was not tired.   I was advised by my husband and my children to  go back to school and this I did by applying to do a PhD degree in the department where I had my MPA but  was told that the MPA was not acceptable for the PhD programme, and so, I had to do an MSc as my second Masters degree.  I was fortunate to have been given an appointment then as a Lecturer Grade II in the Department of Public Administration. The appointment was on contract having retired from the civil service.  After my MSc, I enrolled for my PhD which I bagged in 2008 at the age of 60 years.  Surely, age was not a barrier! By this, I became an inspiration to those, especially mothers, who thought that they were too old to study… I owe a deep sense of gratitude to my husband, Professor Moses Akinola Makinde, who saw to it that I did not waste the gift of God in my life.”

  • Ambode: Lagos to get first woman governor soon

Ambode: Lagos to get first woman governor soon

•One-day governor, deputy get scholarship, N1m each

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has expressed optimism that the state will soon produce its first woman governor.

The governor spoke yesterday when he hosted the One-Day Governor, Miss Zuffon Bukola, with members of her State Executive Council (Exco) at the Exco Chambers of Lagos House in Ikeja, the state capital.

He said the victory of Miss Zuffon, and her deputy, Miss Rosemary Ogidan, was a signpost of what the future holds for the state.

Miss Zuffon, a 16-year-old Senior Secondary School (SSS) II pupil of Awodiora Senior Secondary School at Ajegunle became the One-Day Governor after she won a keenly contested Spelling Bee competition in June.

Miss Ogidan, also an SSS II pupil of Methodist Senior High School at Badagry, was the runner-up.

Ambode said the victory of two girls as one-day governor and deputy governor showed that a woman could be elected governor of the state.

He said: “This is a significant day for Lagos State. It also signals what the future holds for the state. We have seated here two females, who are strong members of the new State Executive Council. We have a female governor and a female deputy governor.

“This is also telling us a story about what the future of Lagos is all about: that one day, we would find seated here, not just a day governor, but for a period or tenure of four years, there would be a female governor in this state.

“We’ve had female deputy governors in this state. It also says something that these younger ones are telling our women in Lagos to rise up and take their position.”

The governor hailed Miss Zuffon and her Exco members, saying their feat was an indication that the funds the state government spent on improving the Educational sector were not wasted.

He assured all that his administration would further develop the sector.

Ambode said: “I want to congratulate her and her Exco members for also showing to us that the future of education in Lagos is strong. We believe that the resources we are spending in the Educational sector are not going to be waste. They have also shown that they are ready to succeed us as long as we encourage them.

“So, we’ll do everything, as what we have been doing in the last two years, to continue to pay greater attention to education and make sure we do so much in youth development to allow them become mentally capable of succeeding us, even as we move away from all the things we have done in the public service.”

The governor awarded full scholarship to Miss Zuffon and Miss Ogidan.

He also announced a cash gift of N1 million to each of them.

Ambode donated N500,000 to each member of the One-Day Governor’s Exco, consisting of Master Tovishede Ayobami (Secretary to the State Government); Master Philip Daniel (Speaker of the House of Assembly); Master Durojaiye Oluwasegun (Commissioner for Education); Master Atabo Ufedojo (Commissioner for Science and Technology).

Miss Zuffon hailed the governor for his visionary leadership and achievements, especially in the Educational sector.

She noted that despite the economic challenges, teachers’ salaries and entitlements were paid as when due.

The aspiring lawyer requested for a school bus, the renovation of the multipurpose hall as well as the construction of drainage channels in her school.

    Ambode granted her requests.

  • Lagos intervenes in case of woman who slashed son with razor blade

Lagos intervenes in case of woman who slashed son with razor blade

The Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development has intervened in the case of a woman, Moji Lawal, who allegedly sliced her son’s hands.

The ministry warned the woman to desist from the cruel act or be prepared to face the wrath of law.

The Nation had exclusively reported last Saturday how Lawal subjected her son, Lateef, 14, to cruelty by slashing the boy’s hands for returning home late from church on Monday August 21.

The woman, who is said to be a typist with Yaba College of Technology and resides at 56 Market Street Shomolu was said to have abandoned Lateef, a student of Morocco High School, shortly after she inflicted deep cuts onnhis hands.

It was also learnt that bystanders took the boy to Shomolu General Hospital where the Medical Welfare Unit of the hospital took care of his treatment.

It was learnt that the incident was reported at Alade Police Division.

Speaking with The Nation on Thursday, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Pharm (Mrs) Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf said the officials of the ministry has stepped into the matter with a view to stopping the woman from subjecting the boy to further cruelty all in the name of discipline.

She said: ‘’ Officials of the ministry have visited the woman’s residence as well as the hospital where the boy was treated. However, the boy has been released to his mother because he is a teenager and the woman is a first time offender.

‘’The woman has been cautioned against the use of inhuman or crude disciplinary measures to rein in her son. However, as a responsible state government, our officials shall continue to monitor the woman and the boy in order to see if she complies with our warning. If she fails to adhere to the warning, the government would take legal actions against her.’’

The Commissioner urged parents to report their recalcitrant children to the appropriate authorities including her ministry instead of subjecting them to cruelty and deadly disciplinary measures.

‘’ The wellbeing of children is of importance to the state government, hence, we will not tolerate any form of degrading or inhuman treatment of children in Lagos State, no matter who the perpetrator is,’’ she added.

  • Not the poster woman

    Not the poster woman

Women take pride in their honesty and, if you like, their holiness in comparison to men. Nothing gives them more joy than to snigger at us that they are better managers of men and materials. Nothing that is kept with them will ever go missing, they say. As our mothers and wives, we fawn over them. I daresay that a household is incomplete without a girl child. They start fighting for attention right from the cradle. It is as if they have been told that they must not yield ground to men if they wish to succeed.

Though the weaker sex, women pack a lot of power.  Men dare not do some of the things they do. There are many things that a woman will do and people will overlook.  But, if a man tries it, he is done for. Women can use their gender to make or mar society.  Where women come together for the good of all, society progresses but where they are divided, things will not work fine. Women know how to manipulate us. They use their innate power to get what they want.

Besides, they can get away with anything all because they are women. They are delicate,  precious, enchanting and cunny. Women can save and they can kill. There is no man born of woman who can escape their wrath once they set a trap for him.  In the past,  we looked down on them. We relegated them because we considered it a man’s world. Their job then was to take care of the home and warm our beds. They had their duty cut for them. When the men talked, they listened. Or better still, they stayed in their rooms with their children until they were sent for.

Gone are the days when women were sent for before they came out. These days,  they lead the way. In some instances, men play second fiddle to them. Our women have come of age. In this modern era, gender is no obstacle to the height any one can attain, whether man or woman. Like their counterparts elsewhere, the Nigerian woman has grown socially and politically. They have their eyes set on the ultimate political office – the Presidency.  There is nothing stopping them from gunning for that exalted office, if they feel they have what it takes to hold the post.

Elsewhere, we have had women leaders.  So, our women will be in good company if their dreams of leading Nigeria come true. We have the women who can hold down the job. Their counterparts who did it elsewhere and are still doing it in some countries do not have two heads. But do our women, that is those aspiring to political leadership, have the impeccable character of the Golda Meirs (Israel), Margaret Thatchers (Britain), Sonia Ghandis (India), Corazon Aquinos (Phillipines), Ellen Sirleaf-Johnsons (Liberia) and Angela Merkels (Germany) of this world?

I ask this question because of what two women who found themselves in office between 2010 and 2015 did. The story has not been fully told, but the little we have heard is disturbing. One was the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, the other was Petroleum Resources Minister Dame Diezani Alison-Madueke. Mrs Alison-Madueke went overboard in her spending of public funds. She used the money just the way she came across it. Since it was free money, by her own reckoning, she felt she could do whatever she liked with it. She acquired a princely sum, but today, she cannot enjoy the wealth because of her health challenge.

Why then did she amass wealth when she knew she was ill? I am not rejoicing over her predicament. Far from it, I am just ruminating over the futility of some of the actions we take when we do not know what wil happen tomorrow. If Mrs Alison-Madueke knew that things will end this way, she would not have bothered taking our money the way she did. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is hard pressed today trying to locate where she kept all the money in dollars, pounds, euro and naira and the property she acquured across the country and abroad.

The agency has been able to trace some, which the court has said should be forfeited to the government. Rather than keep quiet, Mrs Alison-Madueke is going about, claiming that she is being persecuted by EFCC. Persecution in what sense? When did it become an offence for a public officer to be asked to return what she allegedly acquired illegally? As a mother,  wife and daughter,  Mrs Alison-Madueke is supposed to have milk of kindness. Did she show that kindness the way she handled public funds?

No, she did not.  She misappropriated the money meant fi2r our collective good and today, she is crying persecution when the people should be calling for her crucifixion. We have seen how former leaders who misbehaved in other climes were treated.  They ended up in jail after their tenure since they had nowhere to run to. From London, Mrs Alison-Madueke has been throwing  stones at home, alleging that she was accused of what she did not do.

So, who owns all the billions of naira and millions of dollars and pounds said to have been found in her accounts? The money just walked in there, I suppose. What about the property she was said to have acquired? Well, someone is surely lying between her and EFCC and I am sure it cannot be the agency. What will it gain by wrongly accusing Mrs Alison-Madueke instead of going after the real culprit? Everything is not about beauty. What is the essence of beauty if not matched with integrity, honesty and the fear of God? Indeed, everyday is for the thief and one day is for the owner.

  • Woman arraigned for ‘threatening neighbour ’

A 56-year-old woman, Blessing Oyetu, was yesterday arraigned at an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State for allegedly threatening a neighbour with a cutlass.

Oyetu, who lives at 16, Fatade Street, Akeja, Ota, is facing a two-count charge of breaching the peace and threat to life.

The prosecutor, Chudu Gbesi, told the court the accused committed the offence on August 19, about 5 pm, in Akeja, Ota.

He alleged the accused conducted herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace, by using a cutlass to threaten Bode Olabisi and forcefully entering the complainant’s compound to make trouble.

Gbesi said the offence contravened sections 80 and 249 (d) of the Criminal Code Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr. S. O. Banwo, granted her bail at N150,000 with two sureties.

He said they must live within the court’s jurisdiction and swear to an affidavit of means of livelihood.

Banwo said the sureties should submit four recent passport photographs and show evidence of tax payment to Ogun State government.

The case was adjourned till October 10 for hearing.

  • Woman held for ‘duping’ partner of N7m

Woman held for ‘duping’ partner of N7m

Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives have arrested a woman, Gladys Assah-Asor, for allegedly defrauding her business partner, Nkiruka Okon, of N7million.

The 35-year-old single mother from Cross River State, lives at 33b Silifatu Abioye Street, Ogba, Oke-Ira. She works as a network marketer for a popular product based in Ikeja.

The suspect, RRS claimed, confessed to the crime during interrogation by its Decoy Team after Okon reported the matter.

RRS quoted Assah-Assor as saying: “I met Okon in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital, in 2008 where she works as with a commercial bank. We were just friends as at then.

But later in 2015, I marketed a product to her called Healthy Halogen Oven, a product imported into Nigeria by a networking marketing company called Avenues to Wealth. As a network marketer and a partner to the company, my duty is to bring potential customers and partners into the business for a win – win profit making both for the customer and myself.

“I told Okon about the Healthy Oven which was one of the products of Avenues to Wealth sold for N12,000 at company price.

“We agreed to partner in buying large quantity of the product, myself and Okon would put together the financial capital while I do the marketing and transportation of the product to the customers”.

In her statement, Okon, according to RRS, said: “I got interested in the healthy oven marketing business and decided to go into partnership with Gladys, whom I have known since when I was residing in Port Harcourt. We agreed to buy about 410 units of the oven from the company where one sells for N12,000 and agreed to sell at the rate of N20,000.

“I made a deposit of N4,500,000 to Gladys account on the agreement that after sales I would be collecting back N7.5 million plus the profit  but she refused to stick to the plans as agreed in our memorandum of understanding. After I contacted her for my money, she refused to pick my calls and absconded for over one year. Then, I realised I have been duped by the person I thought was my business partner.

“All my efforts to persuade Gladys to pay my money proved abortive as she continued to give me one excuse or the other.

“During one of our confrontations in 2016, Gladys issued me a dud cheque of N3 million, N2 million and another N2 million making N7 million in total but the bank told me the cheques were not payable.”

RRS accused Assah-Assor of duping another woman who investigators declined to reveal her identity.

Assah-Assor, RRS said, also confessed to have duped the woman of N1.8million in a car purchase deal she brokered.

Besides, RRS said: “She confessed to have linked the woman to an auto dealer from whom her sister wanted to purchase a Toyota 4-wheel drive worth N3 million. She had convinced the lady to pay for the vehicle in installment.

She confessed to have collected the first tranche of N1.8million on behalf of the auto dealer. The bubble burst when the lady demanded for a refund and that she was no longer interested in the deal upon realising that Assah-Assor was up to some games.

She disclosed to investigators to have used proceeds from the second fraud to open a catering shop business, bought a car, travelled out on vacations and got a suitable apartment for her family.”

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba.

  • Woman gets one year for stealing officer’s N99, 000

A 35-year-old woman, Micheal Modupe, is to spend the next 12 months in prison for stealing a police officer’s N99,000 in his office, an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State ruled at the weekend.

Modupe, whose address was not provided, was arraigned for stealing.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the light-fingered woman pleaded guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Adelaja, said the court had no option but to sentence her since she had pleaded guilty.

The sentence was without an option of fine.

Police prosecutor Sunday Eigbejiale told the court that the woman committed the offence on April 7 at 4p.m. at Onipanu Police Station, Ota, Ogun State.

He said the accused stole N99, 000, property of a police officer, Mr. Akinleye Akinwale.

Eigbejiale said Akinwale, the complainant, is attached to the Divisional Crime Office at the station.

According to him, the complainant kept the money in his bag in the office and discovered that the money was missing.

“The woman was the only person with him in the office when the money was stolen.”
