Fayemi to graduates: work hard to achieve your dream

    Honour for past VCs

Minister of Solid Minerals Development Kayode Fayemi has urged graduates to stop blaming the government and others for their challenges.
He said they must work hard to achieve their goals.
The minister was delivering the 2016 convocation lecture of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) at the J. F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium yesterday.
Speaking on “Building a successor-generation: Reflections on values and knowledge in nation building”, Dr Fayemi said he paid the price by engaging in odd and menial jobs, such as driving taxis and working as a security guard in Nigeria and during his postgraduate days in the United Kingdom.
His words: “Quit whining – no one owes you anything. The earlier we realise that no one owes us anything, the better for us and the more prepared we would be to face life’s challenges.
“Don’t think you are entitled to a job, just because of your parents’ influence or what they have or your good grades.
“The only guarantee you have in this life is what you do for yourself with the grace God has bestowed on us all.
“You have to be prepared to bend backwards and do what you might consider to be beneath you, because of the bigger picture.”
Fayemi, former Ekiti State governor, said increasing knowledge, discipline, flexibility, passion awhothat are truly educated UNILAG graduates.”
The former governor defended the Federal Government’s budgetary allocation to education, insisting that other competing demands could not have been abandoned.
He said the Muhammadu Buhari administration accorded priority to education, but other sectors of the economy had been badly affected by long years of misrule and so deserve equal opportunity.
“Education is mostly done at the state level. So if you calculate what is given to education at the federal level, you must consider what the states are also contributing.
“Yes it is inadequate but that is within the resources available.
“We need to ensure we provide good health facilities while also ensuring that we provide education needs. I can assure you that this government is dedicated to improving the lot of our people as far as education is concerned,” he said.
Chairman of the event Maj-Gen Ike Nwachukwu called on senior citizens to mentor the younger generation.
Earlier in the day, various landmarks were renamed after former Vice-Chancellors (VCs).
The main auditorium was renamed J. F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium; the Second Access Road now Akinpelu Adesola Road; Radiography Hostel renamed Kwaku Adadevoh Hostel; Distance Learning Institute Auditorium now Nurudeen Alao Auditorium; multipurpose halls now Jelili Adebisi Omotola Hall and Staff School Hall renamed Tolulope Odugbemi Hall.
The Pro-Chancellor, Prof Jerry Gana, said the honour was to recognise the ex-VCs’ display of good leadership and dedication to the development of the university.
The VC, Prof Rahaman Bello, said the honour was meant to encourage workers.
Prof Odugbemi said he appreciated and valued the honour.
He appealed to Nigerians to eschew religious bigotry and ethnic and tribal differences.
“Whatever you do, remember that love is greater. Let’s think of making the university and the nation great,” Prof Odugbemi said.
Prof Ajayi‘s widow Christiana thanked the university for the honour, noting that it would inspire leaders to be good role models.

  • ‘Work hard for your career’

Students of Muslim Senior College, Oworonsoki,  have been enjoined to choose a life-fulfilling careers for themselves.

This advice came from the Pio-vision Club of Nigeria at a career guidance and counselling programme it organised for the students in the school premises.

Its President, Alhaji Rasaq Oyetola, also admonished the students to be calm and well comported always.

Oyetola underscored the need for them to have career guidance.

“It is very important because people should not make wrong career choices,” Oyetola counselled.

Counselling programmes, he noted, would be carried out in secondary schools across Lagos to sensitise students on career path.

He said the club would go to more schools to counsel students on the choice of career.

Solomon Kareem, a Computer Science graduate from Adamawa State University (ADSU), urged participants to be decisive about what they want to do with their lives. “You are a product of your thought. Nobody would think for you,” he counselled.

He advised students to move with brilliant friends that can teach them subjects they find difficult instead of mingling with potential touts.

Kareem continued: “Do not follow a friend because he or she tells you what you like to hear. A good friend will always tell you the truth, which is usually bitter to swallow.”

Principal assistant registrar, counselling unit, Students’ Affairs Division, University of Lagos, Mrs. Aderonke Asiwaju, advised the students to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way.

Career guidance, she said, is targeted at preventing students from making errors when choosing a career.

Mrs. Asiwaju told the students to assess themselves and the career they choose to know if they are on the right path. She urged them to be well prepared for examinations to get good and required grades to qualify for their desired careers.

She implored them not to be job seekers but look at the possibility of becoming entrepreneurs.

She also called on parents never to impose any careers on their children because it would be counterproductive. “This will affect them negatively and they may never do well in such careers because they were not interested in the first instance,” Asiwaju warned.

  • Gaiya: Nigeria needs to work hard to be in Morocco 2015

Gaiya: Nigeria needs to work hard to be in Morocco 2015

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Godfrey Ali Gaiya has stated that the Super Eagles must up their games to get wins in Congo and against South Africa to set Nigeria’s title defence ambition on track.

The Super Eagles got their first win in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series against Sudan in Abuja and only picked four points in a possible twelve.

Nigeria have to pick all six points waiting in the wings at the expense of South Africa and Congo who are first and second on the log respectively but Gaiya said the win in Abuja is a new boost for the team and that the team must work hard to get the needed results.

“The win in Abuja was a well deserved victory, it has repositioned Nigeria and with good displays in the next two matches we may as well qualify for Morocco 2015,” Gaiya stated.

The Reps Committee on Sports, Chairman apart from urging the players to work hard also encouraged them to be united as this is key to Nigeria’s dream of qualifying for the AFCON.

“Hard work is key, there isn’t a substitute to hard work. It’s important for the players to show more hunger, determination and commitment,” Gaiya concluded.
