Kano holds workshop on incorruptible governance for LG personnel

Governor Abba Yusuf has held a two-day capacity building workshop for senior civil servants of the 44 local government councils of the state.

The workshop is aimed at sensitising the participants on transparency, accountability and inclusiveness in governance.

The governor said the event, held at Dawankin Kudu, is also “to bring on board the participants to our administration’s principle of good governance that has always enabled us to come up with meaningful projects in our effort to restoring our dear state to its past glory.”

“This underscores the importance we attach to the fight against corruption and more importantly to the transparency and accountability in governance.”

Yusuf said his government was based on the foundation of transparency and accountability as well as the entrenchment of the rule of law in the society.

He explained that following the Supreme Court verdict on Local Government Administration in the country, he dissolved the 44 local governments’ Interim Management Committees, allowing the civil servants to oversee the affairs of the councils while preparations are in top gear to conduct elections and fill in democratically elected chairmen.

“Therefore, sensitising the top level civil servants on the occasioned leadership challenges especially on running an accountable government at all levels is necessary and timely.

“The government also noticed with dismay the potentiality of both grand and petty corruption at this grassroots level realised as a result of this administration’s effort to give the local government councils full access to their funds even before the apex court’s intervention.

“Therefore, bringing the critical stakeholders to remind ourselves that this administration will not condone any act that undermines our efforts on zero tolerance on corruption is not only relevant but a necessity, hence the need for this workshop,” the governor said.

Speaking on the topic: Building entrepreneurship capacity: Turning ideas to products. Oshinaga said, an entrepreneur is a creator or marketer of value.

Giving further insights, Oshinaga said every value starts from the place of an idea.

“You need to nurture your idea and breathe on it. It does not matter what people say about the idea as long as it comes from within you, begin to nurture it. It is like a nursery bed that has to be watered. The more you nurture your idea, the more it becomes a reality,” he explained.

He said however that the entrepreneur must not be rigid and set in his mind.

“You have to open yourself up to new ideas and innovations and suggestions. Cultivate a mindset that is open to new possibilities. Surround yourself with diverse perspectives, experiences, and knowledge sources to stimulate idea generation,” he stated.

Beyond nurturing a new idea, he said: “The entrepreneur must engage in activities such as reading, brainstorming, and exploring new fields. These activities will nurture your creativity.”

He told the budding entrepreneurs to also identify how they can use their gifts to create value for others in the marketplace.

“It is not enough to be gifted. You must ensure that your gift can be exchanged for fair compensation. That is why you must continuously refine and adapt your approach to ensure the long-term sustainability and profitability of your passion-driven endeavours,” he said.

While noting that there is a global economic downturn, he stated that a man who creates value will always be in demand.

“By harnessing the power of ideas, using education as a tool for self-discovery, trading your gifts in the marketplace, and turning your passions into profitable ventures, you can create significant value and achieve success in your personal and professional life.

“This approach empowers you to leverage your unique strengths, interests, and abilities to make a meaningful impact and achieve financial independence,” he added.

  • NJI to hold workshop for judges March 6

THE National Judicial Institute (NJI) will hold a workshop on Local Content Law on March 6 for judges.

Former Chef Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Alfa Belgore said the event planned for Abuja, is intended to equip judges with the  understanding of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act.

Belgore noted that such training  was necessary for the successful implementation of NOGICD Act and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board NCDMB operational guidelines.

He said: “Considering the enormous positive impact this legislation is intended to have in the country’s oil and gas industry, and by extension, the nation’s economy, clear understanding of the philosophy and intended objectives of the Act by our judges and justices is considered critical to its sound interpretation, effective compliance and enforcement.

“NCDMB has tried since inception, using the carrot approach to get the operators and oil servicing companies to comply with the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act.

“It is time for the Judiciary to move the industry into the next gear by applying the stick within the rule of Law so that the objectives of the Local Content Act can be realised for the benefit of all,” Belgore said.

The ex-CJN observed that NOGICD Act was enacted to build, promote and develop local capacity through human capital development, technology transfer and job creation.

A Professor of Energy Law and Policy, Niyi Ayoola-Daniels said the workshop, being held by NJI, Juris Law Office and NCDMB, is part of efforts by the NCDMB Executive Secretary, Simbi Kesiye Wabote to promote the understanding of the law among critical stakeholders.

Ayoola-Daniels, founder of Juris Law Office, said NCDM’s preference for the rule of law, as against deploying other means to achieve its objective, informed his support for the workshop.

The workshop is expected to be declared open by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, while the President, Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa and the Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Adamu Abdul-Kafarati, are expected in attend it.
