Obiku tips Eagles for World Cup glory

Former Nigerian striker, Michael Obiku, has tipped the Super Eagles to surpass the second round performance in past World Cup appearances at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The Eagles’ best performances at the quadrennial global football showpiece were their debut at USA’94 as well as at France’98 World Cup where the side exited at the second round stage of the competition.
At the upcoming World Cup in Brazil, the reigning African champions will contest for the Group F tickets with newcomers, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran and former champions, Argentina.

Obiku said the team is privileged to have Stephen Keshi at the helm of affairs whom he believes will assemble the best legs for the tournament.
“First thing is that we’ll qualify from the group way ahead of other opponents including the group favourites, Argentina.
“We’re blessed with a good coach who has gone out to make his marks in Togo and Mali before coming to Nigeria to assume the head coach role of the Super Eagles.
“Keshi equally showed his character in the 2013 AFCON as well as the CHAN, both competitions in South Africa.
“Of course, your first game you won’t want to lose as victory gives you confidence to do better in the second game and by the time you’re playing the third game it becomes a game of pride to determine who tops the group.
“The Eagles’ group opponents, Iran, Bosnia and Argentina are good, I know for certain once we’re able to come out of the group there won’t be any stopping the Eagles from contesting for honours,” said the former Iwuanyanwu Nationale and Feyenoord Rotterdam hitman to supersport.com.

Eagles will stop Messi at World Cup – Ambrose

Super Eagles defender, Efe Ambrose, believes the team is capable of containing any threat posed by Lionel Messi and his teammates when Nigeria clash with Argentina in the final Group F game of the 2014 World Cup.

Ambrose has impressed against the Argentine when Celtic clashed with Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, and the defender is confident Messi and his teammates will be well contained when the two teams meet in Brazil.

“It makes no difference; it is the same player whether for club or country. Nigeria is blessed with good defenders who can stop Messi and any other striker in the world,” KickoffNigeria quoted Ambrose as saying on Africanfootball.com.

The player refused to be drawn into making predictions on how far Nigeria will go in this summer’s World Cup, but he was optimistic the team will do well at the competition.

  • World Cup media management

    World Cup media management

Today I feel a fresh air as I attempt to take a step backward to detach myself from the on-going media reportage with specific reference to the happenings within Nigeria vis-à-vis the actors of our World Cup movie. These actors are the sporting media, the coach of the national team, the players of the Super Eagles, the administrators and the passionate Nigeria public not forgetting the government of Nigeria.

The above is a collection of casts for the Nigerian World Cup movie and I tell you that any act that is done wrongly by any of the member listed above is a recipe for mass failure. My concern today however is on how the media can be managed to achieve good success for this World Cup come June/July 2014.

It is instructive to note that this is not a period to be overly critical about our team coaches, administrators, players and even the sporting media rather, it is a period when we are to put all differences aside for the interest of our nation towards achieving good success in our World Cup performance in Brazil

I’m sure that many will differ from my point of argument but I think I will be justified when we take a look at what is happening in other countries that are also preparing for this football fiesta. Rather than experience rancour amongst the various stakeholders we see a different approach which in my view may not be far from been properly coordinated.

What we need is for the sporting media to be adequately abreast of the programmes and plans for the World Cup proper. The administrators on their part should see to it that all needed information as it relates to our plans for the World Cup is properly articulated and communicated to the media.

Our coaches should be given the space to critically choose their players and also given the right environment to justify why they have chosen the said players. We should at this time be careful about what we say or do because whatever is said or done in the negative will produce a negative result for the nation and we will again begin the blame game.

Some may say that what do I mean by media management and I will say that for the World Cup festival, we need to have a dedicated media manager for the World Cup from the administrators. This media manager will be responsible for all press briefings and organized interface between the sporting media and the technical crew and players as well as the administrators.

In a World Cup year every preparation towards the fiesta is purely a media event there is no two way about it and there is nothing secret about your preparation or plans for the World Cup. The only secret is basically the aspect of tactical training between the coaches and their players all other things is purely a media event.

The media if and when properly used is an international army of some sort because the battle of the World Cup is an international sporting warfare that requires a coordinated international media hype and reportage which in turn has the capacity to put the opponents in a very difficult psychological state of mind about your team.

We have everything working for us today, our team is the current African Champions and our coaches have proven that they have the capacity to spring up surprises with the Nigerian team coupled with the commitment by the administrators in ensuring that the best of exposure by way of organised world class friendly matches and camping grounds are all provided for the team.

I will expect that a more specific media interactive session be organised to correct any form of misinformation because at this time we need to all speak in one voice towards the actualization of our noble objective of doing very well in Brazil.

History and posterity will judge us all as it relates to our roles as individuals and as organization towards the advancement of our team in the cause of the World Cup. Let me say that this must be seen as a Nigerian project and the nation is far greater than anyone, hence we need to respect the national pride as against our individual idiosyncrasies.

With an effective platform for media management which must be created by the Nigeria Football Federation to galvanize and mobilize the sporting media in prompt and adequate briefing on plans, programmes and what have you, I am sure that Nigeria will rise and shine at the end of this process. Let me wish everyone a successful regime of working together as a team towards actualizing our common goal which is to do well in the World Cup come June/July 2014.

World Cup: Onigbinde advises Keshi to remain focused

A former Super Eagles Coach, Adegboye Onigbinde, on Wednesday advised the team’s coach, Stephen Keshi, to remain steadfast and committed to their success at the 2014 World Cup.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Mundial is scheduled for Brazil from June 12 to July 13.

Onigbinde told NAN in Lagos that he condemned the frosty relationship between Keshi and the Nigeria Football Association (NFA).

“The issue is that some people in NFA are not comfortable with Keshi leading the country to its fifth appearance at the World Cup.

“You can’t have it all rosy when handling a huge national assignment like the World Cup.

“Although, they are your employers, you owe Nigerians a duty to do well in Brazil,” he said.

The former national team coach said that it was unfortunate that were plans by some people to put their personal interests above national interest.

“The issue at hand is a national one and should be treated with utmost good fate devoid of self-serving,” Onigbinde said.

The Modakeke high chief, who asked Keshi to handle the situation with maturity, refused to comment on the issue of appointing a foreign assistant for the team.

  • No World Cup for Ike Uche – Keshi

No World Cup for Ike Uche – Keshi

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi , has closed the World Cup door on Ikechukwu Uche, saying he lacks tactical discipline.

Uche is one of Nigeria’s reliable goal scorers and has scored 12 goals this season for Villarreal, MTNFootball.com reports.

On Monday night, the striker returned to action after he was sidelined by injury for two weeks.

He last featured for Nigeria in the final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations against Burkina Faso.

Keshi speaking to MTNFootball.com from his base in the United States said, “Ikechukwu Uche is not a player I have not seen play. Ike Uche problem is not knowing how to play football.

“His problem is that he wants to dictate how we play in Super Eagles, he wants to tell us the system we’re playing is not good.

“Uche has a very bad habit, that if you put him in the game he is not playing to instructions and he did that in the final of AFCON against Burkina Faso, he almost cost us.

“Again he did that against Zambia, in the second match when (Efe) Ambrose was given a red card. What we told him to do, he was doing the opposite.”

Keshi added:”And if you don’t respect your team mates and you don’t respect the team, then there is no point. I know he cannot do that in his club, then why do it in the national team?

“I don’t think I need a player like that in the team.”

World Cup: Jonathan boosts Supporters’ Club with N50m

To ensure the Super Eagles excel at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday approved the release of N50 million cash to Nigerian Supporters’ Club.

The money, according to the President, will enable the Supporters’ Club prepare adequately for the biennial tournament starting in June 12.

He made the announcement after he was decorated as the Grand Patron of the Supporters’ Club just before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting started in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

While urging the supporters club not to relent in cheering the team to victory, he also promised to talk to some of the country’s “senior boy”’ to support the supporters’ club members throughout their stay in Brazil.

He said, “We need to encourage you to go to Brazil. We will give you a token. We will start with N50 million and we will talk to some of our senior boys to support you.”

As a grand patron now, the President said he will continue to support all sports in the country in all its ramifications.

On the decoration, Jonathan said, “This decoration is dedicated to all members of my cabinet and all Nigerians of goodwill. I have always been a keen supporter of all sports. I hope to be with you in Brazil.”

“We want to commend the Nigerian Supporters’ Club for your support to the country. It is therefore joyful to be associated with the supporters club. We really appreciate what you have been doing. The nation is mostly grateful to you all.”

Speaking earlier, the President General of the Nigerian Super Eagles Supporters’ Club Worldwide, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, noted that the club plans to storm the World Cup in Brazil with 1,000 members.

“Our plan is to go with 1,000 supporters to the World Cup. 500 will go from Nigeria while the remaining 500 will come from other countries. With your support, Super Eagles will minimally get to the semifinals in the World Cup,” He stated.

Speaking with State House correspondents on whether a foreign technical adviser should be engaged for the team, Ladipo said, “Steven Keshi has done very well, but he still needs two or three people to help him read the game because he cannot see everything by himself.”

“But nobody should force down anybody on him. He should be allowed to make his decision.”

The Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, assisted Ladipo to decorate the President with white Agbada dotted with green-coloured design and green hat to match. He was also decorated with big golden neck chain, trophy and black walking stick to match.
