2014 FIFA WORLD CUP: Emenike screams!

My goals can see Eagles win in Brazil

Super Eagles forward, Emmanuel Emenike is looking forward to Nigeria being crowned World champions at next year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Reacting on Nigeria’s passage to the 2014 Mundial, the Fenerbache hitman declared that the Stephen Keshi tutored-side will make their mark next June.

“I am very happy because we now have the right to participate in the forthcoming World Cup. Hopefully, we will be there to prove a point to the world. Indeed, it will be a great honour for me to wear Nigeria’s colours in a tournament such as the FIFA World Cup. On my part, it will be a wonderful experience to score goals at the World Cup that will see Nigeria get out of our group, then semi-final, then go further to take the trophy,” Emenike said.

Speaking further on Fenerbache’s Sunday trip to Antalyaspor for a Turkish Lig fixture, the former Spartak Moscow striker insisits that only victory is paramount for squad members as they take to the pitch on matchday.

“We know we need to do the best job when we get out there on Sunday. We have shown how best to use our tactics in recent games and I believe we will take all three points again,” Emenike added.

Pardew: Shola will take World Cup by storm

SUPER Eagles forward Shola Ameobi has been backed to take the World Cup by storm.

The Newcastle United striker is expected to make Nigeria’s squad for next summer’s tournament in Brazil after impressing in his five international appearances.

Ameobi scored a stunning goal for the Super Eagles in Monday night’s 2-2 draw against Italy at Craven Cottage. And United manager Alan Pardew feels the 32-year-old – whose contract at St James’s Park runs out at the end of the season – could be a “surprise package”.

“He’s a top, top player,” said Pardew. “We’re fortunate to have him here.

“He could be a surprise package at the World Cup. He’s a mature striker. I think he could do well on that stage.”

While Pardew is keen to keep Ameobi at St James’s Park, the club is yet to open talks about a new contract.

And Pardew says the only focus is Saturday’s home game against Norwich City.

“I don’t think it’s important at this time,” said Pardew. “The most important thing is that we get a result against Norwich.

“We won’t look at the bigger picture unntil we’re closer to the window.”

Ameobi has spent his entire career, bar a brief loan spell at Stoke City, at United.

Asked about a possible future role for Ameobi as a club ambassador, Pardew said: “He could become Prime Minister one day with his personality!”

Keshi warns Eagles over World Cup selection

Stephen Keshi has warned that no player in the present team has an automatic passage to the World Cup.

The Super Eagles coach was speaking with the players in London on Tuesday morning, after the 2-2 draw with former World Champions, Italy.

“It’s time to go back and work hard for our various clubsides and stay healthy, because that will form the basis for invitation when we resume next year.

“The truth is that not everybody here will go to the World Cup, but that is how football goes, so those who want to be part of the team must remain fit and play regularly for their clubsides,” he admonished.

At the end of the short address, England-based stars like John Mikel Obi, Shola Ameobi and Victor Moses immediately left for their bases.

Most of the other players waited to leave the Hilton Cobham abode of the team on Tuesday. Keshi and the home-based players will arrive in Nigeria on Thursday morning.

  • World Cup and the Keshi phenomenon

Now let us try out some Hardball logic: because the world is round, great footballers who are masters of the round leather game can be said to have the world at their feet? Yes or no? Well, yes to the extent that every week, about half the world’s population sit at the edge of their seats to watch (or worship) these new gods of today’s world. Yes again to the extent that the best of them are valued and paid better than the world’s greatest leaders (one player by name Falcao reportedly earns about £450,000 (about N117million in one week!). On the other hand, no to the extent that even the greatest footballers with all their world-wide fame and renown hardly grow to become national political leaders.

But what might happen in 20 to 30 years’ time? Would football have completely conquered the world or would perchance, the world have done away with this ‘delirious virus’? Today, our winning teams are showered with cash, choice property and national honours, what would it be tomorrow, 50 years hence? Would it be political appointments or would great players automatically become alternate presidents of their countries? How would football play out in 50 years?

This brain wave seized upon Hardball as he contemplates Nigeria’s qualification to partake in mankind’s biggest one-game festival – the FIFA World Cup football tournament and the trajectory of Stephen Keshi in Nigeria’s football history. Last Saturday, the Nigerian senior team, the Super Eagles flew over their Ethiopian counterparts, the Walya Antelopes by a four goals to one aggregate to win a ticket to the soccer fiesta in Brazil next year. To qualify to play in the World cup is to rank among the elite foot-balling nations. That is what Nigeria has indeed become to the pride of millions of her citizens and credit for the current resurgence of Nigeria’s football may well be ascribed largely to one man – Stephen Okechukwu Keshi. He is Nigeria’s senior team coach/manager and he is the most remarkable Nigerian today in so many ways.

Keshi was captain of the Super Eagles that won the 1994 Africa Nations’ Cup and he captained the Nigerian team that made it to the first World Cup in 1994. Today as a coach, he has led our team to conquer Africa and also picked a ticket to play in the World Cup. What a feat! Particularly salutary is the fact that he has practically helped his country to pick the pieces of her football life, so to speak, once again. For many, since the 1994 exploits in Africa and the world, Nigeria’s football has been in decline both in the administrative office and on the football pitch. Apart from occasional sparks from the age grade teams, it was a harvest of sorrow for the teeming fans of the senior team. Numerous foreign and local coaches were tried without a positive result. It became quite difficult to cobble a national team in a country that had hundreds of professional footballers all over the world.

Even Keshi was tried and discarded until about a year ago when he was reappointed. This time, he did what most coaches had neglected to do over the years he chose to look inwards at the home league, selecting some of the promising ‘local’ lads he matched them with a few foreign professionals while discarding the jaded foreign ‘super-stars’. It has worked like magic since then leading to the lifting of the continental diadem.

Now, it is not only that we have a team but more significant is that we have a national team with growing form, character and depth. When they play the world champions Spain in the Confederation cup recently they proved they can hold their own. And last Monday against the Italians many of us saw in that outing, the Nigerian verve, gusto and our peculiar skills. As we go to Brazil next year, we go with high expectations not necessarily of lifting the greatest gold trophy on earth but of regaling the world with the great African brand of soccer.

Ghana book World Cup place despite 2-1 defeat

    • Qualify 7-3 on aggregate

Ghana secured a third successive World Cup finals appearance despite a 2-1 defeat by Egypt in the second leg of their playoff in Cairo on Tuesday.

The Ghanaians triumphed 7-3 on aggregate, having done the hard work in the first leg in Kumasi last month, and will now get the opportunity to improve on their quarterfinal finish at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010.

Egypt, playing in strife-torn Cairo for the first time in two years, restored some pride with victory on the night thanks to goals by former Wigan Athletic forward Amr Zaki, and Gedo. Kevin-Prince Boateng grabbed a late goal for Ghana.

For Egypt, it is another heart-breaking qualification near-miss, having not appeared at the World Cup since Italia 90 despite winning an unmatched four African Nations Cup titles in the same period.

Brazil 2014 World Cup: Elegbeleye showers encomiums on Eagles

    • Says team needs to work more

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Gbenga Elegbeleye has commended the Super Eagles for qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

He also charged the Chief Coach of the team Stephen Keshi to do everything humanly possible to make the team a world beater like he did in South Africa this February when he led the team to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Elegbeleye, who watched the match live in Calabar on Saturday, also thanked Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River for hosting the Eagles during their camping exercise in the state, till the last qualifying match the team played against Ethiopia and won 2-0 yesterday to book the World Cup ticket on a 4-1 goal aggregate.

The former Deputy Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Sports however charged the Keshi-tutored team to prepare harder and show more dedication as they battle the best footballing nations at next year’s World Cup finals.

Elegbeleye showered praises on the team for securing a fifth World Cup appearance and at a time Nigerians are gearing up for the country’s Centenary celebration. He stressed that the World Cup finals is a big stage that requires serious preparation, hard work and commitment of all stakeholders.

Elegbeleye assured of the presidency’s continued support for a remarkable showing in Brazil.

  • Hamilton not satisfied with Eagles

    Hamilton not satisfied with Eagles

Former Nigerian footballer, Paul Hamilton has passed a damning judgment on the Super Eagles as not being a World Cup team yet.

The Eagles defeated their East African opponents, the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia 2-0 in the final qualifying match on Saturday at the U.J. Esuene Stadium to book a passage to the 2014 FIFA World Cup on a 4-1 aggregate win.

One goal in each half off the foot of forward, Victor Moses from the penalty spot in the 20th minute and substitute, Obinna Nsofor in the 83rd minute cemented the spot for Eagles’ fifth appearance at the quadrennial global football showpiece.

Hamilton said the final encounter against the Ethiopians is an eye opener that the side need intensive work if their fifth appearance at the global football fiesta will be made to count.

“Saturday’s game was a wake up call for our team, our performance clearly showed we’ve not arrived on the world scene and serious preparations must commence immediately for the World Cup, if our participation will count positively.

“Most of the players are suspect, from goalkeeping, defence, midfield to attack, we must strengthen the entire team. It’s shocking at this stage of our game to see top strikers making a mess of begging chances at goal, Brown Ideye is the worst culprit even at my old age I’m confident to convert the begging chances he missed.

“It’s not encouraging for us at the moment as we must be seen to be scoring goals. However, it was a successful outing for Super Eagles winning comprehensively as well as qualifying Nigeria for Brazil 2014 World Cup and Nigeria’s fifth appearance at the Mundial,” said the former Nigerian manager to supersport.com.

Hamilton said the Ethiopians appeared not to have recovered from the penalty offence they conceded to Nigeria throughout the encounter.

“The Ethiopians were thoroughly frightened by the penalty they conceded and never recovered, I think it completely unsettled the side. But if I’m their manager, Sewnet Bishaw I would feel contented and satisfied by the players’ performance right from the start of the qualifying race to the last day.

“It’s just unfortunate that they won’t be at Brazil 2014 World Cup come next summer but they’re the greatest revelation of Africa’s qualifying race,” said Hamilton.

Nigeria became the first African country to secure their ticket for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

  • 2014 World Cup programme: Keshi to submit plans soon

2014 World Cup programme: Keshi to submit plans soon

    • Says CHAN competition is immediate target.

Super Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi has promised to submit a workable programme to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in the next few days ahead of the Brazil 2014 World Cup finals.

Nigeria booked a flight to Brazil on Saturday at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, by defeating the Walya Antelopes 4-1 on aggregate. The Eagles had earlier beaten them 2-1 in Addis Ababa before completing a double with a 2-0 win in Calabar on Saturday.

Speaking with journalists during the post-match press conference, Keshi told Nigerians that he and his technical crew would soon have a discussion to draft how the programme for the Eagles would look like ahead of the Mundial.

The Big Boss explained that the African Nations Championship (CHAN) slated for South Africa in January remained his priority before delving into the World Cup programme.

He reckoned that raising a formidable team that would compete favourably with other countries in Africa would be his immediate headache before any talk about the World Cup.

“We just finished a game and I don’t have anything on paper right now. Maybe in the next couple of days or weeks I will establish something better. But my most important competition now is CHAN. It is around the corner in the month of January.

“Getting beyond the quarter-final stage at the World Cup finals and other things will follow one after the other. It is turn by turn and game by game until we get to the last game.”

Speaking on the hope for some players that have not been considered during the qualifiers to the World Cup, Keshi told journalists: “Starting from the month of March next year, we should be having some friendly matches. Some of them that are here might get the the opportunity to showcase themselves.

“Bringing in players is not only about the football side of it, it is about the complete players that we need. You can be an excellent player but you can still divide the house.

“I will not invite a player that might break the unity in the team when I know that it is the ingredient we need to have a solid national team. I don’t care if such player scores 20 goals; If he could cause confusion in my team, I will take such player out. We need a team in and out of the field.

“We only have 23 players going to the World Cup, we cannot exceed that because we are not the only country going to the World Cup.”

Enyeama promises: World Cup will be special

Nigeria goalkeeper and stand-in captain Vincent Enyeama is relishing the prospect of playing in a third World Cup finals after his side overcame Ethiopia 4-1 on aggregate in their African section play-off.

Nigeria won the initial leg 2-1 in Addis Ababa courtesy of a brace from Emmanuel Emenike but they were made to work harder in Calabar during the second leg before recording a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Victor Moses and Victor Obinna.

The Lille shot-stopper admitted he is amazed to have earned the chance to play in a third global finals and claimed 2014 would be extra special for his side given that they enter the tournament as champions of Africa.

“We are happy that we have booked a place at next year’s World Cup. It is amazing that we shall be in the party to Brazil,” Enyeama told reporters.

“I have been to two World Cup finals in 2002 when I was picked miraculously and also at the 2010 edition in South Africa. This one is special because we are going to Brazil as African champions,” he said.

Nigeria were joined in the draw for the group stages on December 6 by Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday, after the Elephants secured a 4-2 aggregate win over Senegal.
