POWER LEE If not wrestling, I would’ve been Chief Justice of Nigeria

PRO Wrestling Africa (PWA) Heavyweight title holder, Nigeria’s Godspower Ikpide, popularly called Power Lee, has been in the forefront championing the development and promotion of professional wrestling in Nigeria.Power Lee who is a power house when it comes to rating Nigerian pro wrestling talents in the heavyweight categories hails from Oghwe, in Itsoko North local government area of Delta State.
“Mr. Peace” as he is sometimes called, started his pro wrestling career in 1987 and turned professional in 1990. Since he started his professional career, he has been privileged to compete among the best superstars in Nigeria, namely Super Samson, De Executioner, Super Apama, African Mr. Perfect, Jimmy Palm “De African Dream” and a host of others. The African champion got his title in September 19th 2015 in Cameroon where he defeated the three times national champion, Mitchel Noudem Lamatrick. He also defeated Marvellous Buffalo of Angola at the Asaba Township Stadium, Asaba in Delta State, on May 1, 2016 to retain his African title.
In this chat with AKEEM LAWAL, Power Lee believes that with the number of years he has spent promoting the game of pro wrestling, he would have by now gone to become the Chief Justice of Nigeria if he had taken to Law.

Are you satisfied with the level of pro wrestling in the country right now?
I am not satisfied. Once I’m satisfied, it means I am going to retire because wrestling is a continual thing. But the state of professional wrestling, in Nigeria especially, is still at a very low level compared to what it used to be in the days of the late Power Mike. When we remembered that the main bowl of the National Stadium used to be full to the brim. But look at it today, the advent of other sports has come to cripple professional wrestling. Yet, every home you go to, they watch professional wrestling on television. But hardly will you see people coming to watch live shows because there is no enough publicity, no enough media coverage and there is no much awareness created around the game of professional wrestling.
How did you get into wrestling?
I used to watch wrestling when I was young. Mighty Igor, Ray Apollo. That is why you must have role models. It is what you see that gives you that interest in going to do it. I used to see the way these people behaved, the charisma, their attitude, the way they related to people. They were not injurious people. I looked at them and I said I wanted to be like these people. It was made possible with the help of my late brother who supported me. Naturally, I was a very rigid person. I’m very strong and I’m still strong, that is why I’m still able to do what I’m doing now. That is why on my street today, the young ones will be hailing me ‘Power Lee, ‘Power Lee’ and that is to tell you that they are seeing good things in this man. Perhaps in the nearest future they too will become a professional wrestler like me.
Which of the wrestlers were you looking up to that time?
Actually, I adored Mil Mascara. He was a man with 100 types of tricks; he had the gimmick, he had the flexibility. He had the wisdom and could always manoeuver in every lock and the same thing today. When you see heavyweight champion, look at my size. If you see heavy man coming on the street you will say he will beat Power Lee, but I always tell them I’m the needle you cannot swallow, if you do that you will get hurt. It’s about the skill, the technique. I’ve been in wrestling for about 30 years, so I have the onion; I have all it takes to bring my opponent down when I want.
Will you encourage any of your kid to take to wrestling?
My kids are my first fans. I have a fitness centre and some of them are into it. The only thing is that they would not do the killer drive or do killer moves. Their father is a wrestler and they do whatever I tell them to do. I won’t stop any kid that wishes to take after their father, because their own case might be better than what we are doing now. So if I ‘m appealing to everyone out there to come and join us, any of my kid that has interest will be welcome.
Are you satisfied with your achievements in professional wrestling?
Human needs are insatiable, I can’t say I am satisfied but I am contented with whatever God has given to me. I still aim higher, I want to go to the next level. I’ve been the national champion for the past six years; nobody was able to take the title away from me. I’m now the African champion. I won it last year and defended it successfully this year. I’ve been rated Number 2 in the world in professional wrestling and definitely I’m going higher. If I become the world champion today, of course it will be a great deal.
You have been scheduled to face Damien Wayne Kostyal in the Allied Independent Wrestling Federation (AIWF) World title fight in USA, how are you preparing for the match?
The world title match against Damien Wayne will hold in January 2017 in California, USA. It is part of the 25th anniversary celebration of the AIWF.I’ve been promoting professional wrestling with the help of an organisation called Ultimate Pro Wrestling Promotions (UPWP). I’ve been the national champion without any assistance, now I’m the African champion and I was able to defend the title here in Asaba which has gone to put Nigeria positively on the World map.Now I’ve been given the opportunity to take a shot at the world title, it’s left for me to prepare towards that day.
If not wrestling, what would you have been doing?
If not wrestling I would have been what God wants me to be.
So many athletes will say they would love to be doctor, engineer … (Cuts in)
Even in wrestling we have doctors, pilots, lawyers and so on. But one factor is that it depends on the foundation you are building on. In Nigeria, we have wrong people running sport. They will never tell you the truth. If not for wrestling I would have been a lawyer. I’ve spent close to 30 years in this sport and when you subtract that from my present age you know what you have. I’ve spent quality years in this game of sport and especially in wrestling. By now probably I would have been the Chief Justice of the federation considering the years. How many years will it take me to complete my PhD in law or whatever to be a SAN (Senior Advocate of Nigeria). They are not better than me, but this is a profession I have passion for, it is the profession I love. Even though I’m doing it in a hard way and definitely I’m getting more experience because technicality is the order of the day. It’s just not about the theory but the practical. So that is why when you compare the height of Goliath and David, you can never believe that David can win. It’s all about technicality too. So if I can do that I will do it again and again.

WRESTLING OLYMPIC QUALIFIER: NWF to write IOC, UWW protest letters, as Turkish embassy denies Onyebuchi visa

Nigeria Wrestling Federation has revealed plans to write protest letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and United World Wrestling (UWW) following the refusal of the Turkish embassy in Abuja to grant visa to Blessing Onyebuchi who is to represent the country at the 2016 World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament 2 scheduled to hold between 6–8 May 2016 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Onyebuchi and head coach Nigeria Wrestling Federation ( NWF), Victor Kodei were earlier scheduled to depart the shores of the country on Wednesday night for the Istanbul event which is the final qualification tournament for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. But the duo were denied visa by the Turkish embassy despite all the efforts by the wrestling federation to provide funds for their trip.

In ạ text sent to SportingLife on Thursday, NWF President, Hon Daniel Igali expressed frustration at the development, promising to inform IOC and UWW about the development.  He described it as a big setback for the federation after sourcing for the funds.

“I am just leaving the Turkish Embassy in Abuja after two days of trying without success to get visas for Onyebuchi Blessing 75kg female wrestler and Coach Victor Kodei who were scheduled to attend the last Olympic Wrestling qualifying tournament in Istanbul from 6-8 May.

“This has sadly brought to an end all the efforts of an athlete who worked so hard for an opportunity to attempt to qualify for the Olympics and become an Olympian for her country.

“That Turkey of all countries can deny visas to Nigerian athletes after fulfilling all laid down protocols is humiliating. I will be sending a strongly worded protest letter to both the UWW and IOC regarding this Olympic disenfranchisement,” Igali said.

Seven wrestlers have already secured slots for the Rio Games and the NWF had hoped to increase the numbers with Onyebuchi ‘s participation at the last Olympic qualification tournament in Turkey.

“It now up to the National Sports Commission, our direction and how we will move forward from now will be dependent on funds available to us. The team will go on break and will resume camping in about two weeks.”

While commending the wrestlers for their performance in Algeria, Igali said: “Apart from the glory going to the Almighty,  the praises should go to the coaches and the young men and women in the Arena who have worked so hard over the last few years to get this far. We merely cheer leaders.”

  • ‘I saw my son wrestling with the suicide bomber’ – Father of Yobe blast victim

‘I saw my son wrestling with the suicide bomber’ – Father of Yobe blast victim

The father of one of the victims of the suicide bomb attack in Damaturu, Yobe State,  said that he came out of the house and saw his son wrestling with the suicide bomber before the bomb went off killing his 19-yr-old son Hassan Mohammed Damagum.

Mohammed, a pre-degree student at the Yobe State University, was one of the victims that died along side with the suicide bomber near a mosque at the Gen. Mohammadu Buhari Estate on Wednesday morning.

Garba Babayo, who gave a chilling account of the incident, also recalled his last discussion with his son before he died.

“Early this (Wednesday) morning, we heard a heavy sound of a  bomb and  my son  said he would go out and see what was happening. It was not long when I also followed. By the time I came out, I saw him wrestling and struggling with the suicide bomber. Everything just happened like in a speed of light and the bomb went off. “When the bomb exploded,  I saw my son in pieces with the suicide bomber. His head was cut off from his body. His leg was on another side and some of his parts were scattered on the street”, Garba Babayo narrated.

Talking about his son, Babayo disclosed that he just got admission into the pre-degree programme of Yobe State University and was in the process of his registration.

“My son is 19 yrs old trying to gain admission into Yobe State University. In fact, he went to the hospital yesterday (Tuesday) to collect his medical certificate. He showed me the certificate telling me that ‘I will go and continue with my registration tomorrow (Thursday); unknown to us he cannot continue with that programme and his entire life on this earth,” he said.

One of the victims at the hospital apparently from the Fulani settlement informed that two insurgents came to their area at about 5.30am in the morning and ordered them to gather in one place, after which one of them blew himself in their midst.

“Two of them came; the other one was holding a gun and the other one was not talking. The one with the gun asked us to come out and gather in one place. When we gathered, he sent the other one who was not talking at the centre of us and started going away. That was the time the one in our midst detonated his bomb in his body,” he narrated.

Another eyewitness, Adamu Idriss,  disclosed that the suicide bomber at the shopping centre inside Buhari Estate came asking for a drug store to buy medicine and the people were suspicious of his character.

Some people were very suspicious of him when he came and they went close to him to ask him some questions. He was looking for a Chemist(drug store) and the people around were not satisfied that somebody living in that area will have no knowledge of what he was asking for. When some people went close to interrogate him, it was that time that we heard the sound of a bomb, gbuaaaaa!,” Adamu informed.

AFRICA GAMES 2015 WRESTLING: We will prove our doubters wrong – Kodei

As preparations thicken ahead of the 2015 Africa Games in Congo, head coach Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Victor Kodei has expressed optimism  that the wrestlers will perform beyond expectations.

In a chat with SportingLife on Friday, Kodei revealed that a target has been made by the NWF, and he is ready to surpass it.

“Personally I have made a target for myself and I will either maintain my standard or surpass it,” said the 14 times Africa Champion.

“To be honest with you I am not happy with the record in Grecco Roman. If you can remember at the Africa Championship in Egypt (May 2015), we were able to win two  bronze and also at the 2014 Commonwealth championship we won  one silver and three bronze which is not okay by me”, noted Kodei.

“The reason why I am so particular about Grecco Roman is that other categories (Female and Male Freestyle) have always been doing Nigeria proud in the past and they will replicate that in Congo”, said the head coach.

The four times Olympian said he is confident that the athletes can pull a  surprise in Congo, urging Nigerians to pray for the team as they embark on their quest to rule Africa one more time.

AAG 2015 WRESTLING: We want to win all gold medals, says Purity

National female wrestling coach, Purity Akuh has revealed that his mission at this year’s edition of the All Africa Games (AAG) scheduled to hold in Brazzaville, Congo between September 4  and 19 is to win all the gold medals.

Nigerian athletes are  in camp at the National stadium package B ahead of the 11th edition of the Games.

Purity said with the programme put in place for the female athletes, they are fit and will defeat any opponent in their various categories.

“The morale of the girls are high in camp and they are ready to maintain their various spots on the continent at the All Africa Games”, asserted Purity.

“As usual, Nigeria has been performing well at African championships, but this time around our target is to win every available gold in each of the categories.

“So it is operation ‘win them all’ and we are not settling for less than gold medals in Congo.

“Most of the athletes such as Aminat Adeniyi, Blessing Oborodudu, Blessing Onyebuchi and Odunayo Adekuoroye at their peak and I see nothing stopping them at Congo while others have proved not to be pushovers”, Purity said.

The head coach advised the wrestlers not to depend solely on their strengths as technicalities should be applied during bouts.

Purity thanked the Nigeria Wrestling Federation led by Daniel Igali for putting up programmes that helped discovered other athletes stressing that the team will make Nigeria proud at the All Africa Games.

  • Orji to host wrestling tourney

    Orji to host wrestling tourney

Thrilled by the outcome of the Commonwealth Champion of Champions wrestling competition in Aba on August 31, Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, has pledged to host the Commonwealth/ Americas Unifying Championship in the state later this year.

Nigeria’s Osita Offor, also known as De Ultimate Commander, defeated South Africa’s Tornado to become the undisputed Commonwealth heavyweight champion.

He will now face the winners of the Americas and European championships in a battle of champions to determine the king of world wrestling.

Speaking during a reception for the Abia-born Ultimate Commander, Governor Orji, an avid wrestling fan, said the victory demonstrated the state government’s belief that given adequate encouragement Nigerian youths will excel in all their endeavours.

The governor recalled that a certain Giant Alakuku from Umunneochi, which is De Commander’s local council of the state, was once the strongest man in Nigeria, adding that he was not surprised that another giant from the council is flying the state’s flag at the world arena.

“I want to say that you have done well for Abia State and Nigeria in general. Your feat is in line with our policy of encouraging the youths of the state to maximise their talents in gainful endeavour. We are behind you in your quest for higher achievements.”

He promised to ensure that the Commonwealth/Americas Championship is brought to Abia State in December, adding that the state government would also provide the space and other things De Ultimate Commander would need to establish his wrestling and other combat sports academy in the state.

The championship, which attracted fans from Abia, Imo, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Rivers as well as Cross River states, also featured Hulk Hogan lookalike, Mr Wrestling, Kwaito Kidd, Ananzi, as well as such notable musicians and comedians as KCee, Spyderman,  God Pikin and Kanayo O. Kanayo, among others.
