  • France hits WYC final

    … Defeats Ghana 2-1

A Florian Thauvin-inspired France defeated Ghana 2-1 to reach the FIFA U-20 World Cup final for the first time on Wednesday, fifa.com reports.

Goals in either half from the hard-working midfielder saw Pierre Mankowski’s side beyond the Black Satellites, after Ebenezer Assifuah had drawn the African side level just after half-time, despite the Colombia 2011 semi-finalists finishing with ten men after Samuel Umtiti was dismissed.

The game began at a frantic pace, and it was stunning to see the scoreboard still goalless with 15 minutes played. Frank Acheampong had sight of goal for Ghana, while each of Thauvin, Paul Pogba, Jean Cristophe Bahebeck, Lucas Digne and Yaya Sanogo went close for France.

Bahebeck clipped the outside of the Ghanaian post, but the best chances fell to the latter Les Bleuets pair. First they combined with a neat one-two to release Digne, whose shot from inside the area was saved by Eric Antwi – which squirmed free and was collected on the second attempt.

They were at it again when Digne fed Sanogo at the near post, and while the striker’s first shot was blocked, he got his second effort on goal. It was too close to Antwi however, when the Arsenal man should have done better.

Antwi was to thank for the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup winners still being in the game and tightened up their rear-guard to stem the flow of chances, but Thauvin broke the deadlock right on half-time. Another silky exchange of passes unlocked the Ghanaian defence, this time Bahebeck and Thauvin, with the impressive Lille midfielder dragging the ball past Antwi superbly to slot into the open net.

The French lead was short-lived though, as Ghana flew out of the blocks after the break, with Ebenezer Assifuah firing home superbly to draw level with Bruma and Jese at the top of the scorers charts. Fighting off pressure from Geoffrey Kondogbia, he opened out on to his left foot and rifled an unstoppable effort in off the post.

  • WYC: We fought bravely – Obuh

Nigeria U-20 coach, John Obuh, has said his team put up a good fight only to crash out of the World Cup in Turkey to Uruguay on Tuesday night.

“Despite playing a man short for half of the match, we fought a good fight,” declared Obuh.

“The match has been won and lost and we accept the loss in good faith.”

He added: “Our target at this tournament was not to leave the stage this early but I hope the next coach will take it from where I stopped.

“What is very certain is that Nigeria is a football nation blessed with a lot of talent. The players only have a focus and they will be world beaters.”

MTNFootball.com reports that the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Aminu Maigari commended the fighting spirit of the team, urging them to not allow this setback affect the bright future that awaits them.

“We wish to commend your performance against Uruguay, but unfortunately one team has to win and another has to lose,” he told the team.

“You did your best and went out there to win but it was not meant to be.

“You should learn from the mistakes you made so that next time we will go all the way.”

Nigeria fell behind after 64 minutes when Nicolas Lopez slotted home after goalkeeper Samuel Okani failed to deal with a free kick from the left.

Olanrewaju Kayode drew Nigeria level in the 69th minute when he let fly from just outside the box.

And moments later, Michael Olaitan saw his effort crash against the side netting.

Okani pulled off a big save in the 56th minute and Nigeria created a number of chances thereafter before Uruguay regained the lead from the penalty spot through Lopez in the 84th minute after Wilfred Ndidi had fouled a goal-bound Diego Rolan.

Nigeria began to play with a man short after 40 minutes when fullback Shehu Abdullahi was sent off for a double-footed tackle on Diego Laxalt.

It was a cagey start by both teams as they tried to settle down.

    Okani dreams WYC trophy

Flying Eagles Goalkeeper, Samuel Okani, has declared Nigeria is capable of winning the U-20 World Cup in Turkey after reaching the round of 16, MTNFootball.com reports.

The 19-year-old Enyimba goalkeeper was excited to have kept a clean sheet against Korea Republic in a last group match on Thursday.

“After winning today (Thursday), we could be contenders for the trophy,” said Okani.

“I’m really happy we’ve made the next round, and I kept a second clean sheet in a row.”

He appeared bewildered by the attention focused on him, remaining true to his innate modesty and even appearing a little timid. He had no reason to be, because although he is the shortest goalkeeper at the tournament, he has laid down impressive credentials so far.

“I’ve always played in goal, and right from the start I only ever wanted to play between the sticks, even as a little boy,” he told FIFA.com

He is motivated by the desire to emulate his biggest idol.

“I’m amazed by Iker Casillas,” he freely admitted.

Obuh regards Okani as one of the cornerstones of his team, the kind of player he rates as irreplaceable.

“Chukwunenye is a terrific lad and he was top class again today,” the Nigerian coach said to FIFA.com, “My players look up to him.”

The 53-year-old almost certainly didn’t realise the delicious irony in his choice of phrase.

“What makes him special is his extraordinary leaping ability, and his skill and composure with the ball at his feet.”

    WYC: Ajagun promises fight back

Flying Eagles skipper, Abduljaleel Ajagun, has promised a fight back by the team after Friday’s 3-2 loss to Portugal in the ongoing U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

“We are all disappointed we lost the game, but we are also looking forward to our next game against Cuba on Monday,” said Ajagun, whose two second-half goals were not enough to stop Portugal’s victory in front of over 10,000 fans at the Kadir Has Stadium in Kayseri.

“We will improve in our next game and score the goals that will get us back in the competition.”

MTNFootball.com reports that coach John Obuh also said the match against Cuba should now be the focus.

“It was a keenly contested game but unfortunately we lost, this was not what we had hoped for,” Obuh said.

“We have to take the defeat in good faith so as to face the next game because we have to qualify to the next round.”

WYC: Portuguese journalists chase Braga-bound Osuchukwu

Portuguese journalists in Kayseri have been asking after Flying Eagles star Chidi Osuchukwu who is bound for a top club side in the country – Sporting Braga.

Several reporters and photographers accosted Flying Eagles media officer Samm Audu during the team’s final training at the Kadir Has Stadium in Kayseri on Thursday demanding to know more about the left-sided Dolphins forward.

MTNFootball.com reports that interview bookings have also been made with Osuchukwu after Friday’s showdown with Portugal.

Braga has announced Osuchukwu, who can play on the left side of attack or as a central midfielder, has signed a four-year deal pending a medical.

Another member of the squad who has attracted interest in Kayseri is goalkeeper trainer Alloy Agu.

Eighteen and half years after he played for Kayserispor in the Turkish league, Agu has returned to his former base.

It was a happy reunion for Agu and several of his former teammates at Kayseri’s biggest club when the Flying Eagles filed out at the impressive Kayserispor training ground.

“It’s really amazing what Kayseri has become since I left the city,” said an impressed Agu.

“The city has simply been transformed. It’s unbelievable.”

The former Eagles skipper said he remembers Kayseri as a city that loves its football.

Agu spent two and half years at Kayserispor.

Last season, the club finished fifth in the Turkish top league and may well feature in the UEFA Europa League should Besiktas and Fenerbache be found guilty of a match-fixing allegation next week.

    Jonathan hosts F/Eagles, Eaglets Tuesday

President Goodluck Jonathan will on Tuesday host the country’s U-17 and U-20 teams, officials told MTNFootball.com.

The Golden Eaglets lost in the final of the African U-17 Championship in Morocco, while the Flying Eagles placed third at the African Youth Championship in Algeria.

The Eaglets lost on penalties to Cote d’Ivoire after final scores stood at 1-1 in the championship final in Marrakech.

The U-20s defeated Mali 2-1 in a third-placed match to avenge a 1-0 loss to their West African rivals.

Both teams have qualified for their respective World Cups and Nigeria can boast of a special record of having medals in Africa at full international, U-20 and U-17 levels in one calendar year.

Top government and sports ministry officials have been locked in talks over the presidential reception.

A top official informed MTNFootball.com: “The President will receive the teams on Tuesday at Aso Rock.

“All arrangements in this regard have been finalised.”

However, the Flying Eagles would be honoured in absentia as the team is currently in Germany on a training tour ahead of the U-20 World Cup in Turkey next month.

Interestingly Nigeria won the 2011 African Youth Championship in South Africa.

President Jonathan rewarded the Super Eagles with national honours, cash and plots of land when the team won a third Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa in February.

    WYC draws out

The 2013 African Youth Championship winners had been drawn in a relatively easier group than the other African teams at the U-20 World Cup in Turkey, MTNFootball.com reports.

In a draw staged in Istanbul on Monday evening, the eventual champions of the AYC, which is in the semi-final stage, was drawn in Group E alongside Chile, England and Iraq.

The three other African flag bearers are drawn in tougher-looking groups.

These groups are Group A, which has France, USA and Spain, while Group B has Cuba, Korea Republic and Portugal.

Group D has Mexico, Greece and Paraguay.

The U-20 World Cup will kick off on June 21 with an opening match between Cuba and Korea Republic.

The tournament will see a brand new trophy at stake.
