Xavi says next Barcelona manager will ‘suffer’

Outgoing Barcelona boss Xavi says his successor will “suffer” in the role.

The Spaniard, 44, was sacked before taking charge of their final game of the season – a 2-1 win over Sevilla.

Former Germany and Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick is set to replace him.

Xavi, who was under contract until 2025, said he was going to leave the club in January but performed a U-turn, announcing he was staying on at Camp Nou in April.

He said: “To the new manager, I tell you: ‘You will suffer’. This is a very complicated place to be. This is a difficult job and you have to be patient.”

The former Spain midfielder took over as head coach in November 2021 and won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in his first full season in charge.

This season they finished second in La Liga, 10 points behind champions Real Madrid.

Xavi’s sacking came a month after Barcelona confirmed he would stay at the club. It followed comments he made about the club’s financial struggles, which were said to have angered president Joan Laporta.

“I have the feeling that everything I have done in these two and a half years has caused an earthquake,” he said. “I have been targeted many times in many situations.”

Xavi said his work at the club “not been sufficiently appreciated” and said of the decision to sack him: “I had no choice but to accept it. It doesn’t matter if I agree with the arguments.”

The former Barca player said he is open to a new job but thinks he also needs to “rest a little bit”.

“It’s so difficult to coach Barcelona,” he added. “It’s been tough last week, but I have my conscience very clear. I’m proud and happy.”

Xavi wins final game as Barcelona boss against Sevilla

Xavi’s time as Barcelona boss came to an end with a 2-1 win at Sevilla in the final La Liga game of the season.

Fermin Lopez scored the winner, running to celebrate with the departing boss, who was told on Friday he was being sacked.

Robert Lewandowski’s early goal gave the visitors the lead before Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri responded.

Barcelona were already guaranteed to finish second in La Liga, behind champions Real Madrid, while Sevilla end the season in 14th.

Former Spain midfielder Xavi said in January that he was going to leave the Nou Camp, but was persuaded to stay by club president Joan Laporta in April.

Former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick is set to replace him.

Xavi, who won four Champions Leagues as a player with the club, guided Barcelona to their only La Liga title in the past five seasons last year.

“I don’t think the work has been appreciated enough,” said Xavi after Sunday’s game.

“A double last year [La Liga and Super Cup], and this year we haven’t been up to the task because of details.

“I leave with some mixed feelings because the work is positive even though we didn’t win the titles this season. I think we were on the right track and I still think so.”

Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen added: “Xavi has always given us a lot

“He worked every day so that we could succeed. On a personal level, he’s been a friend for many years and it’s never easy to let him go.”

Spanish giants Barcelona have sacked head coach Xavi.

Xavi was sacked after a trophy less season by the Catalonian giants.

The club legend initially announced he would leave at the end of the season but had a change of mind after President Joan Laporta convinced him.

The club confirmed the sack in a statement.

It reads: “The President of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, informed Xavi Hernández this afternoon that he will not continue as coach of the first team in the 2024-25 season.

“FC Barcelona wants to thank Xavi for his work as a coach, which adds to an unparalleled career as a player and team captain, and wishes him all the luck in the world.

“Xavi Hernández will coach his last game as first team coach this Sunday in Seville.

“In the coming days, FC Barcelona will report on the new structure of the first team.”

Barcelona are considering sacking head coach Xavi.

The 44-year-old had announced in January that he would step down at the end of the season, but was persuaded to stay by club president Joan Laporta.

However, comments by Xavi in a recent news conference appear to have angered the club’s board, who now feel the former Spain midfielder should depart.

Barcelona B team manager Rafael Marquez is favourite to take over as manager.

Before Thursday’s away win at Almeria, Xavi suggested it would be difficult to compete financially with rivals Real Madrid and other top teams in Europe.

“I think that Barca fans need to understand that the situation is really difficult, especially economically, to compete with Real Madrid in Spain and others in Europe,” he said., external

“We will adapt to this. It doesn’t mean that we don’t want to fight to compete and fight for trophies. It is the situation for Barcelona at this time. We need stability and time.”

Real have already secured the La Liga title this term, are in the final of the Champions League and will sign France striker Kylian Mbappe from Paris St-Germain in the summer.

Barcelona are 14 points behind Real Madrid in the league with two games remaining.

Xavi took charge in November 2021 after leaving Qatari club Al Sadd and guided Barca to the Spanish title in his first full season in charge in 2022-23.

The Spanish giants exited this season’s Champions League at the quarter-final stage following defeat by PSG.

Revealed: Reasons Xavi remain  at Barcelona

Xavi Hernandez and Barcelona’s relationship seemed on the rocks in January but they have made the decision to stay together in a marriage of convenience.

After the coach said he would walk away at the end of the season from a dream job that turned out to be “cruel” and “unpleasant”, three months later he changed his mind in a dramatic U-turn.

“In January I saw the best thing was for me to leave, but now I see it differently,” Xavi said at a press conference.

President Joan Laporta said the club needed “stability” and not drastic decision-making, despite failing to meet any of their objectives this season.

The decision came hot on the heels of Barcelona’s Clasico defeat by Real Madrid that leaves them 11 points behind the leaders in La Liga, and Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain.

Those losses virtually guarantee Barcelona will end the campaign without a trophy, a disappointment after their first La Liga triumph in four years last season.

Barcelona did manage to compete with Europe’s giants on an even keel in a way they have not in years past – securing their best Champions League result on the road in a decade with a 3-2 win at PSG.

They reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2020 and knocked-out Serie A winners Napoli.

While Xavi’s list of excuses this season has run longer than the club’s constrictive salary bill, Ronald Araujo’s early red card against PSG in the second leg was a key factor in the second-leg 4-1 collapse.

Lamine Yamal’s hotly disputed “ghost goal” in the 3-2 Clasico defeat by Real Madrid is another crucial flashpoint which went against Barcelona.

“It’s in our hands now,” said Xavi, after years fearing the worst on the biggest nights against superior forces.

However the club’s improvement since Xavi’s initial decision in January is not the chief reason they club are willing to keep him, instead only the easy explanation.

Despite Laporta claiming they had not looked into alternative options, Barcelona could not see a suitable one.

Reserve team coach Rafa Marquez was not particularly convincing, nor was the favourite to replace Xavi, Hansi Flick.

Julian Nagelsmann is staying with Germany, Thomas Tuchel has struggled with Bayern Munich and would likely prove too expensive for Barcelona in any case.

As would Jurgen Klopp, who wants a break after his time at Liverpool – taking over at chaotic, cash-strapped Barcelona would be entirely contrary.

Next season if things go awry Laporta has Marquez as an escape plan.

To appoint the Mexican now would open the door to another potential new coach having to be found after that, along with the financial consequences.

“Regarding money, Xavi has behaved with great dignity,” said Laporta. “He has never been greedy.”

Xavi also offers Laporta an umbrella from the steady rain of criticism – the only reliable deluge in drought-ridden Catalonia – with the 44-year-old’s glittering past as a Barcelona player making him an easy target.

Barcelona can also hope keeping Xavi will still work out, with each year at the helm providing vital new experiences for a novice coach.

Giving up on Xavi would also mean renouncing Barcelona’s style of possession football to some extent, as the Catalan is the main proponent of it this side of Pep Guardiola – even if that has not always translated on the pitch.

For Xavi too, there is clear appeal in staying.

Despite the waves of criticism he must surf, it really is his dream job and one he may never get the chance to do again.

For years he spoke about his determination to coach the club he loves and it may be Barcelona or bust for him.

While the club’s financial problems restrict his transfer options, the explosion of teenagers Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi mean Barcelona have “signed” two world class players from the youth academy.

They have been crucial in Barcelona’s improvement and may have given Xavi the belief he can help the club compete for silverware again next season.

Now Xavi can dream of leaving on a high, presenting a major trophy at the club’s renovated Camp Nou stadium next summer.

Xavi agrees to remain Barcelona coach

Xavi Hernández has agreed to remain as Barcelona coach until the end of his contract in 2025, a source confirmed to ESPN, reversing his decision to step down in the summer.

Xavi, 44, announced in January that he would walk away from the post at the end of the season following a string of bad results, saying that the job had also taken its toll on him mentally.

However, following a meeting with president Joan Laporta, the former Spain international has decided to fulfil his contractual commitment with the Catalan club.

Xavi was appointed as Barça coach in 2021, leading them to their first league title in four years last season and signing a contract extension until June 30, 2025, with an option for an additional year, in September.

The team ran into difficulties in December and January, though, when they conceded four or more goals in defeats to Girona, Real Madrid, Athletic Club and Villarreal as they were eliminated from the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey.

That 5-3 loss to Villarreal in January led to Xavi’s announcement that he would leave in the summer, but it also sparked a revival on the pitch.

Barça went 13 games unbeaten in all competitions, with Laporta, vice president Rafa Yuste and sporting director Deco all expressing their desire for Xavi to continue during that run.

That streak ended last week as Barça lost 4-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League to exit the competition at the quarterfinal stage, missing out on a first semifinal appearance since 2019.

They then lost El Clásico 3-2 to Real Madrid on Sunday, leaving them 11 points behind the leaders in LaLiga and effectively out of the title race with just six games to be played.

However, sources told ESPN that those results had not affected Barca’s position on Xavi and that they still hoped he would reverse his decision.

In addition to the league title won and the faith placed in young players, such as Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí, Barca’s financial situation also played a role in their desire to keep Xavi.

Mexico international Rafa Márquez, currently in charge of the club’s B team, and German coaches Hansi Flick and Thomas Tuchel were all on the short list to come in if a new coach was needed.

Yesterday , though, the board convened to discuss the coaching situation and reaffirmed their preference for Xavi to continue, with a final agreement then reached later in the day when Xavi met with Laporta.

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said his team’s Champions League quarter-final second leg clash against Paris Saint-Germain would be similar to the first leg thriller.

The five-time champions edged Luis Enrique’s PSG side 3-2 in a Paris blockbuster last week and are aiming to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2019.

Xavi said the second leg at Barcelona’s temporary Olympic Stadium home on the city’s Montjuic hill would produce more of the same spectacle.

“We’re not a team that will sit on our lead, we want to take the ball off PSG and win the game,” Xavi told a news conference. “I hope we are at our best, they will test us to the limit – I see a game very similar to the first leg.

“It’s the Champions League, it’s Paris, and a game in which no one will be holding back.”

Xavi said PSG’s coach Luis Enrique, who was on the Barcelona bench the last time the Catalans won the Champions League in 2015, would send his team out to harry the hosts.

“Montjuic’s (atmosphere) has to seem like the big nights at Camp Nou,” continued Xavi. “Luis Enrique will not hold back, he will come here to press – we have to show a lot of personality to reach the semi-finals.”

Meanwhile, Enrique said  his players were strong enough to turn around the Champions League clash against Barcelona and reach the semi-finals.

“PSG have never come back to win after losing a first leg, but tomorrow is the day,” said Luis Enrique told reporters. “After a defeat and in such an important game, the days after the game were hard.

“It’s tricky to get back your mental state, but the good thing about football is you have another game against the same opponent.

“We are sure of what we want to do and I think we arrive in a great moment.”

UCL: Xavi fancies Barcelona’s chance against PSG

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez said playing Paris St-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals is the opportunity the five-times champions wanted in their bid to get back where they belong after crashing out in the group stage two years in a row.

Currently in a good vein of form, having won eight of their last 11 matches in all competitions, Xavi’s side have conceded only one goal in their last six matches and stand second in the LaLiga table, eight points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Barca have qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in four years, something they did every season between 2007-08 and 2019-20.

“It is a key moment. The word after being out of the quarter-finals for four years is excitement,” Xavi told a press conference on the eve of the quarter-final first leg.

“We can dream again. We think we are at the best moment of the season, but we have one of the best teams in Europe in front of us, with one of the best coaches in Luis Enrique. It is a team built to win the Champions League.”

In 2017, Barca made it through to the last-16 after an epic come from behind tie against PSG, winning 6-1 in the second leg at the Camp Nou after losing the first leg 4-0 in Paris.

The Barca manager then was Luis Enrique, who recognized in his press conference how the Catalan giants’ style is still a major influence on his work with PSG.

“I have a great relationship with (Luis Enrique),” Xavi said. “He has a team built to win the Champions League. We’re facing a very difficult opponent and we’re both looking for a similar style.”

He added: “We can be proud of having the Barca DNA – Luis Enrique, (Manchester City manager) Pep Guardiola or (Arsenal boss) Mikel Arteta.

“Tomorrow we’ll be looking for the same thing. From here on it’s up to the players to find the DNA that identifies us so much.

“Football is unpredictable but we’ll try to control the variations. Luis Enrique has a wide range of talent at his disposal but we’ll try to play them (PSG) as equals.”

UCL: Xavi wary of Osimhen-led Napoli’s strike force

Barcelona coach Xavi has  admitted  that  Napoli have ‘improved’ under Francesco Calzona and reckoned that  the team’s attacking line  complete with  Nigeria international Victor Osimhen  might be too hot to handle when both sides square  up tonight  in the UEFA  Champions League .

Napoli and Barcelona meet in Spain  tonight in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16. Speaking  at  his  pre-match press conference,  Xavi revealed what he expects from his side and from the Partenopei.

“I expect a proud Napoli that build up from the back press high with no speculation. They have high individual quality,” said the ex-Spain star as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

“Napoli’s three attacking players(Matteo Politano, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Osimhen)  are of high level. It’s a big game against a big club, the defending Italian champions.

“There are no favourites, it’s 50-50. The crowd must support us and think the stadium must be like a pressure cooker. We must show our identity and have personality.

“They have improved with a new coach, they are more dynamic. We are dealing with important injuries, but we must compete. We were better than them in Naples and must be better here,” continued the Spanish tactician.”

Xavi admitted that the game is the most important of the season for the La Liga giants.

“It is, but we are ready, with confidence. We haven’t played in the quarter-finals for four years. We face a team that is not in the best moment but won the title last season. We need a packed stadium.

“We already played good games against big clubs like Real Madrid even if we lost in La Liga, but also Atletico and Napoli. We must perform similarly but be more effective inside the boxes.”

The atmosphere at Barcelona’s ‘new’ stadium has been a matter of debate for the whole season as it is not as frightening for opponents as the Camp Nou which is currently being redeveloped.

“Montjuïc must be similar to Camp Nou. Be full and be our 12th  player,” insisted Xavi.

Talking about the Partenopei stars and trying to predict the most dangerous ones for his Barça side, Xavi said: “I like Napoli players in attack. Politano, Kvara and Osimhen, but also how they defend.

“I like Lobotka; he is good in the build-up and doesn’t lose possession. I’d like to see him in a club like Barca.”

Barcelona beat Mallorca 1-0 on Friday while Napoli were held to a home 1-1 draw by Torino on the same day. The Catalans sit 3rd in the La Liga table, eight points below leaders Real Madrid.

Ths decision came after Barcelona’s 5-3 league loss at home to Villarreal.

He said it was the best option for the team following recent occurrences in the team.

“I have decided I will not continue beyond June 30 (the end date of his contract),” Xavi said after Saturday’s match.
