  • Anti-xenophobia protests: Police arraign 83 suspects

    EIGHTY-THREE men, who allegedly raided, destroyed and looted the Sangotedo and Surulere shopping malls, were on Thursday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Jude Atuamya, Kazeem Kamiru, Reuben Johnson, Mohammed Abdul Wahab and 79 others were arraigned by the police before Mr P. A. Ojo on a six-count charge of stealing, willful damage and conspiracy.

    The prosecution team, led by Mr Cyril Ejiofor, alleged that the defendants committed the offences on September 3, at Shop Rite, Surulere and Sangotedo, Ajah.

    The court heard that the defendants allegedly conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of the peace by willfully setting fire to the malls and damaging property worth N500 million.

    The defendants were also accused of involvement in riotous acts, looting spree and harming of passers-by.

    According to the prosecution, the offences contravened Sections 50, 287, 339, 341 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Each defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Ojo granted the defendants N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum, who must be their parents.

    “Where their parents are deceased the surety must be a family member on your paternal side,” Ojo added.

    He adjourned further proceedings till October 9.

  • Man ‘impersonates’ lawmaker, ‘forges’ INEC seal

    A 30-year-old man, Toluwalope Akanni, was on Thursday arraigned before Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly impersonating a House of Representatives member to defraud the public.

    Akanni, who lives at Madogun area of Oke-ara in Ogun State, is facing a seven-count charge bordering on forgery, stealing and breach of the peace.

    The prosecutor, Mr. Augustine Nwabuisi, said the defendant committed the offence on June 10 at Ijaye Ojokoro, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendant forged an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Certificate of Return to claim that he is a House of Representatives member.

    Nwabuisi alleged that the defendant convened a meeting where he solicited for funds from people for his inauguration.

    He said Akanni told some of his victims that he would secure federal appointments for them.

    Nwabuisi also alleged that the defendant collected N665,000 and a new Samsung S9+  worth N260,000 from Miss Jessica Eyimofe.

    Akanni, the prosecutor claimed, collected N430,000 from Mrs. Dolapo Tunner and N125,000 from Mr. Odulanmi Murtala, who he promised to secure jobs for.

    “My lord, the defendant also claimed to be a lawyer; he told everyone that he had won the election.

    “He also collected some money from members of his church with this scam.

    “He went as far as taking people to Abuja under the guise of going for his inauguration.

    “He forged INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s signature and the INEC seal on the certificate of return,” the prosecutor said.

    Magistrate S. O. Obasa granted the defendant N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She ordered that the sureties must be above 40 and live within the court’s jurisdiction.

    Obasa said the sureties must show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She ruled that one of the sureties must be the defendant’s relation.

    The case continues on August 20.

     

  • Three men docked for stealing five phones from students

    Three men, who allegedly stole five phones valued at N360,000 from students during their exams, on Friday appeared in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The police charged Azeez Adeniji; 32, Nwaeze Nwulu; 31, and Emmanuel Daniel; 22 with two counts of conspiracy and theft.

    The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on June 13, at the Faculty of sciences, University of Lagos, Yaba.

    He told the court that the defendants, who were not students of the university, had gone into an examination hall and stole five phones.

    He said that the complainants; Miss Grace Odutola, Miss Ayoola Malik, Miss Racheal Jacob, Miss Hannah Taiwo and Miss Aina Akinola, only noticed that their phones were missing after their exams were over.

    Unuigbe alleged that the defendants stole two Samsung phones, an IPhone 6s and two Tecno Camon phones; all valued at N360,000.

    The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 411, and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 411 stipulates two years imprisonment for the offence of conspiracy while 287 stipulates three years for stealing.

    After the charge was read to them, they pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Peter Ojo admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    Ojo ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned the case until July 19 for mention.

  • Barber pleads guilty to stealing church property

    A barber, Joshua Adewale, was on Thursday remanded in prison by a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos after he pleaded guilty to stealing a stereo, belonging to a church.

    The stereo was valued at N75, 000.

    Adewale, 23, was arraigned on a count charge of breaking into a building with intent to commit felony.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Oghere, ordered that Adewale should be kept at Ikoyi Prisons, pending a review of the facts of the case and sentencing.

    Oghere adjourned the case until June 26.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendant had at 2.40 a.m. on June 5 at No. 19, Eyiwawi Str., Shomolu, broken into the premises of the church.

    She said that Adewale entered the church through the back window, which he had broken, to gain entry.

    The prosecutor said that Adewale stole the stereo, belonging to the Redeemed Christian Church of God from the altar of the church.

    “My lord, it was an assistant pastor of the church, Mr Olatunji Fasasi that discovered the burglary and reported to the police.

    “It was upon investigation that it was discovered that a witness had seen the defendant carrying the stereo out of the church that night,” she said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence contravenes Sections 310 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

  • UNILAG students charged with attempted rape

    Two University of Lagos (UNILAG) students on Thursday appeared at a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to rape their course mate.

    Ikedi Okpanlanedu, 21, and Samuel Idongesit, 20, are also accused  of conspiracy,  assault, impersonation and threatening violence.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye alleged that the undergraduates invited their course mate, a make-up artiste, to a hotel room and attempted to rape her.

    She said the defendants committed the offence on April 1, at Peace Land Hotel, Fola Agoro, Shomolu, Lagos.

    Olaluwoye said the defendants promised to introduce the make-up artiste to someone, who needed her service.

    She alleged that the defendants attempted to rape her on arrival at the hotel room.

    “My lord, they strangled her because she called for help. A hotel worker, Mr. Ohaeri Godlove, who heard her screaming, called the guard.

    “Okpanlanedu claimed to be an Army personnel and threatened to stab her with the knife he was holding, if she did not cooperate with them.

    “The knife was recovered from the crime scene. We intend to tender it in evidence,” Olaluwoye added.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty. They were granted N200,000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum by Chief Magistrate Peter Ojo.

    The sureties must be employed and possess evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on June 26.

  • Dad remanded for defiling 16-year-old daughter

    A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court yesterday remanded in prison a 50-year-old man, Gafar Anifowose, accused of defiling his 16-year-old daughter.

    The police charged Anifowose with rape.

    Chief Magistrate K.B. Ayeye gave the order after the defendant pleaded not guilty.

    She adjourned till June 3.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Thomas Nurudeen alleged that the defendant, on March 3, at 5, Faniran Street, Ikorodu, Lagos, raped the girl.

    He added that Anifowose raped her twice and warned her not to tell anyone.

  • Trader accused of challenging pastor to a fight

    A 40-year-old trader, Chijioke Onyishi, who allegedly challenged a pastor to a fight, yesterday appeared at a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Onyishi, who lives at 13, Duru Close, Shomolu, Lagos, is charged with two counts of challenge to fight and breach of the peace.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye alleged that the defendant committed the offence on January 29, at 7am, at 13, Duru Close, Shomolu.

    She said the defendant engaged the cleric in an argument over the dirty surrounding in their house.

    Olaluwoye said during the argument, Onyishi challenged the complainant, Mr. Paul Nwachukwu, to a duel.

    “My Lord, the defendant challenged the pastor to a fight, so that he will prove to him that he is a man.

    “He also brought two men to the compound to enforce the rules of the duel and act as referees,” she said, adding that the pastor’s wife called the police before he was arrested,” she said.

  • Unemployed face N1.6m theft charge

    A 28-year-old unemployed man, Taiwo Ogunmodede, who allegedly broke into a real estate firm and stole N1.6 million, yesterday appeared at a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye said the defendant on October 24 last year at 2am broke into a real estate firm at Mile II Estate in Lagos, belonging to Mr. Babatunde Shittu.

    Olaluwoye alleged that the defendant stole an Infinix Note 5 phone valued at N102, 000 and N1.6 million locked in the complainant’s office desk.

    She said: “My Lord, a neighbour saw the defendant running away from office at 2am and called the attention of the guard.

    “When the guard went to check the office, he noticed that it had been broken into and he reported the matter at a police station.”

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Oluwatoyin Oghere granted the defendant N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be employed and show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on May 15.

  • Salesman accused of stealing pure water

    A 34-year-old salesman, Bayo Matthew, who allegedly stole pure water (sachet water) worth N152, 900 from his employer, was yesterday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye said the defendant committed the offence between November 2018 and last year, at 87, and 89, Ilaje Road, Bariga, Lagos.

    She alleged that the defendant, a salesman and driver for Ozone, a company that produces pure water, had been stealing bags of sachet water from the company worth N152, 900 for over three months.

    The prosecutor said the company’s accountant, Mr. Toyin Dahunsi, discovered the theft while trying to balance the end of year (2018) sales.

    “My lord, upon investigation, it was discovered that the defendant had been taking out some bags of water from his truck for months.”

     

     

  • Mortuary attendants ‘remove dead woman’s heart, chop off wrists’

    The police have accused three mortuary attendants, Michael Olusegun, Oluseyi Olamide and Adetunji Aliyu, of removing a dead woman’s heart and chopping off her wrists at a hospital in Ikorodu, Lagos.

    Olusegun, 65; Olamide, 41; and Aliyu, 45, were on Thursday brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ court in Lagos on a two-count charge of conspiracy and misconduct with regards to a corpse.

    Prosecuting Superintendent of Police (ASP) Roman Unuigbe alleged that the defendants committed the offences on November 16, at St. Raphael Divine Mercy Hospital in Ijede, Ikorodu area of Lagos.

    The court heard that a Mr. Anthony Lawani lodged a complaint to the police that the body of his sister, 51-year-old Mary Ehinlaiye, which was deposited at the morgue, was missing.

    Unuigbe said: “The complainant went to the mortuary to collect his sister’s body for burial but the attendants could not present the body to him.

    “It was later discovered that they had exchanged the body for another one and the family of the other deceased had buried his sister as their own.

    “They secretly went to the mortuary and exchanged the corpses and tried to return her to her brother without two wrists and a heart.

    “Fortunately, Lawani discovered the missing parts and drew the attention of the police to the situation.”

    The offence, the prosecutor added, contravened sections 165 (b) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (Revised)

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Peter Ojo admitted each defendant to bail in the sum ofN500, 000 with two sureties in the like sum.

    One of the sureties must be a blood relation and must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

    The sureties must also show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and be gainfully employed.

    The case continues on January 30.
