China will roll out measures on market access, inspection – Yan Yuqing

The Chinese Consul General in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, has said China would roll out measures on market access, inspection, quarantine, and customs clearance to boost trade in goods, enhance skills and technical training, and expand the promotion of quality products.

Yuqing disclosed this in her speech titled, “Seizing the Zero-Tariff Opportunity to Unlock New Momentum in China-Nigeria cooperation.”

She stated, “China is ready to, through negotiating and signing the agreement of China-Africa Economic Partnership for Shared Development, expand the zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent tariff lines to all 53 African countries having diplomatic relations with China, or all African countries except Eswatini, to welcome quality products from Africa to the Chinese market.

“For the least developed countries in Africa, on top of the zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent tariff lines announced at the 2024 Beijing Summit of FOCAC, China will roll out measures on market access, inspection and quarantine, and customs clearance to boost trade in goods, enhance skills and technical training, and expand the promotion of quality products”.

Yuqing added, “China is ready to work with Africa to deepen the implementation of the ten partnership actions for modernization, prioritize cooperation in such key areas as green industry, e-commerce and e-payment, science and technology, and artificial intelligence, and enhance cooperation in security, finance and the rule of law, to promote high-quality development of China-Africa cooperation.

“And during the meeting with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar in Changsha, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also expressed China’s readiness to sign a common development economic partnership agreement with Nigeria to fully leverage the zero-tariff policy, share development opportunities, and pursue mutual rejuvenation.

“These new measures are not only a continuation of the long-standing China-Africa friendship, but also a vivid demonstration of President Xi Jinping’s policy of ‘sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith’ in China’s relations with Africa. They are practical actions by China to sow the seeds of hope with our African brothers and sisters, and to jointly embrace the spring of development.

“At a time when the world is far from peaceful, the frequent occurrence of unilateralism, protectionism and economic bullying has created severe difficulties for the economic and social development and the improvement of livelihood in African countries and other developing countries.

“China and Africa, as the largest developing country and the continent with the largest number of developing countries, are the backbone of the Global South. The more uncertain and volatile the international situation becomes, the more China and Africa must strengthen unity and resilience, stand firmly on the right side of history, and play a proactive role in guiding the direction of our times.

” To this end, on behalf of China, Foreign Minister Wang Yi proposed five key initiatives for promoting high-quality China-Africa cooperation: First, upholding mutual assistance and serving as defenders of solidarity among Global South countries.

Second, upholding openness and serving as advocates for international free trade.

“Third, upholding mutual benefit and win-win results and serving as partners in global development cooperation.

Fourth, upholding fairness and justice, and serving as defenders of an equitable international order

“Fifth, upholding exchanges and mutual learning, and serving as promoters of the diversity of world civilisations.

“Last week, I concluded a fruitful visit to Abia State and Port Harcourt, which further strengthened my confidence in the China-Nigeria journey toward modernisation. During the visit, I met with Governor Alex Otti and jointly attended the Together Fight Against Hunger charity donation ceremony, where the Chinese Consulate General, in collaboration with Chinese enterprises, provided support to low-income communities. I was truly gratified to see that the public welfare efforts initiated by the Consulate are reaching more places and benefiting more people across our consular district.”

Trade wars benefit no nation, cooperation is the future – Yuqing

The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, has called for stronger trade cooperation among nations, stressing that trade wars serve no country’s interest.

In a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, Yuqing criticized the United States for repeatedly undermining globalization under the guise of addressing “trade imbalance” and “national security” concerns, leading to the imposition of tariffs on multiple countries.

She noted that the U.S. had recently extended these tariffs to virtually all its trading partners, including China, using various justifications.

“These actions severely infringe on the legitimate rights and interests of all countries, violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, weaken the rules-based multilateral trading system, and disrupt the global economic order,” she said. “The Chinese government strongly condemns and firmly opposes such moves.”

Yuqing emphasised that unilateral tariff increases erode the foundation of multilateral trade and warned that externalising domestic issues will not bring lasting solutions.

Yuqing added ” By taking such actions, the United States defies the fundamental laws of economics and market principles, disregards the balanced outcomes achieved through multilateral trade negotiations, ignores the fact that the U.S. has long benefited substantially from international trade, and weaponizes tariffs to exert maximum pressure for selfish interests.

“This is a typical act of unilateralism, protectionism and economic bullying. Under the guise of “reciprocity” and “fairness,” the United States is playing a zero-sum game, pursuing in essence ‘America First’ and ‘American exceptionalism.’

” It attempts to exploit tariffs to subvert the existing international economic and trade order, put U.S. interests above the common good of the international community, and advance U.S. hegemonic ambitions at the cost of the legitimate interests of all countries. Such actions will inevitably face widespread opposition from the international community.

She stated further ” Development is an inalienable right of all countries, not the exclusive privilege of a few. International affairs should be addressed through consultation, and the future of the world should be decided by all countries. All countries should uphold the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefit. They should practice true multilateralism, jointly oppose all forms of unilateralism and protectionism, and defend the U.N.-centered international system and the WTO-centered multilateral trading system.

” China and Africa are Pillars in Upholding the Legitimate Rights of Developing Countries and Safeguarding Multilateralism and International Fairness and Justice. China stands ready to work hand in hand with Africa under the frameworks of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), BRICS, and other bilateral and multilateral mechanisms. Together, we will actively participate in the reform and development of the global economic governance system, firmly oppose unilateralism and economic bullying, and jointly defend the multilateral trading system. We are committed to upholding a fair and free trade environment, expanding the shared interests of the Global South, and injecting greater certainty and positive momentum into global economic stability and growth. China and Africa will continue to advance economic globalization toward a direction that is more open, inclusive, balanced, and beneficial to all”.

The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, has highlighted the strong momentum in China-Nigeria relations, emphasizing their role in driving Africa’s development through collaboration.

In a statement on Monday, Yuqing noted that over the past 25 years, China-Africa cooperation has gained widespread recognition for its “tangible and substantive” results.

She stated, “China has helped Africa build or upgrade nearly 100,000 kilometers of roads and more than 10,000 kilometers of railways. In the past three years alone, Chinese enterprises have created over 1.1 million new jobs in Africa.”

She further stressed that practical cooperation remains the backbone of China-Nigeria relations.

“Mega-projects such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port and four international airport terminals have not only transformed daily life for Nigerians but also stand as testaments to the two countries’ pioneering role in China-Africa cooperation,” Yuqing said.

“At the end of 2024, the Peoples Bank of China and the Central Bank of Nigeria renewed a three-year bilateral currency swap agreement worth 15 billion RMB/3.28 trillion Naira (extendable by mutual consent). The China Development Bank disbursed its first loan of 245 million euros for the Kano-Kaduna Railway.

” Friendship between nations thrives on people-to-people ties. Chinese and Nigerian communities now jointly celebrate festivals such as the Lunar New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and national anniversaries. Performances by Nigerian artists from the Huaxing Arts Troupefeaturing lion dances, kung fu, waist drumming, and traditional Yoruba-Igbo-Hausa dancesvividly showcase cultural integration, reinforcing the social foundation for a shared China-Nigeria and China-Africa future.

“Looking ahead, as members of a community with a shared future, China and Nigeria will continue advancing equality and mutual benefit, deepening cooperation in industrial and agricultural modernization, digital innovation, AI, and green development.

“Leveraging FOCAC as a platform and prioritizing people-centered progress, the two states will write a new chapter of friendship in the modern era. With joint efforts, China-Nigeria relations will reach greater heights, energizing African modernization and contributing meaningfully to a community with a shared future for mankind”, she added.

“China remains committed to advance high-level opening-up, by leveraging its enormous domestic market to attract global resources and production factors, and at the same time, utilizing its comprehensive and complete industrial system to encourage competitive industries to “go global.” This will amplify the interplay between domestic and international markets and resources and improve the level and quality of trade and investment cooperation.

“We sincerely hope that China and Nigeria will achieve new progress in global industrial chain cooperation, by leveraging their complementary strengths, the two nations can further explore new areas of collaboration, such as clean energy, green minerals, and finance. Expanding the “comprehensiveness” of China-Nigeria relations will promote coordinated development across various sectors, including trade, agriculture, culture, defense, science and technology, and aerospace. This multifaceted approach will ensure the steady growth and deepening of the China-Nigeria partnership.

“Renewed Hope Agenda is to build a China-Nigeria Community with a Shared Future hand in hand. Nigeria is “renewing hope” on its development path, playing a crucial role in regional peace and serving as a stabilizing force in Africa. “We are ready to strengthen alignment with Nigeria, unlock the potential for collaboration, and expand areas of cooperation to support Nigeria’s accelerated development and revitalization. China appreciates Nigeria’s adherence to the one-China principle and supports Nigeria in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions.

“We also back Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism, safeguard regional peace and stability, and enhance its influence on the international stage. China-Nigeria relations have transcended the bilateral scope. The two nations must work together to advance their comprehensive strategic partnership and build a all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for new era, setting an example of solidarity and cooperation for the Global South.”
