I denied my husband sex because I could not withstand cigarette’s odour, wife tells court

A 44-year-old wife, Modupe Alegbeleye, on Thursday told an Ikole-Ekiti Customary Court in Ekiti that she denied her husband, Ebenezer Alegbeleye, sex because of the cigarette odour from him.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Modupe said this while replying to a statement by her husband that she denied him sex for three months.

According to her, my husband likes smoking cigarettes but I do not like its odour.

“So, whenever he smoked and demanded sex; I was always turning down his demand as I hated cigarette’s odour.

“Although, I knew that my husband was a cigarette smoker before we started our relationship, I was always advising him to stop it.

“I was also praying so that he would quit it, but to no avail.

“That is why, sometimes, I would ask him to take his bath before making love to me.

“1 also denied him sex because I did not want more children based on the experience I had when I was to give birth to our second child.

“I lost the baby due to lack of proper care for the baby and me from my husband,’’ the woman said.

The husband, however, told the court that he needed more children because he was the only child of his mother.

“I am the only child of my mother. When my wife gave birth to our only son 10, years ago, I told her she would bear me more children.

“But my wife said no; and she has been denying me any romantic advances I make to her,” Alegbeleye said.

He told the court that peace would reign between them without separation, “If my wife will change her attitude and agree to bear me more children.

“She will also agree to take proper care of me by cooking my meals, which she had denied me for long.”

The court’s president, Mrs Yemisi Ojo, adjourned the case until May 22 for judgment after all efforts made to reconcile them proved unsuccessful.

A former regent of Ayebode-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Chief Idowu Omolayo on Tuesday urged a Customary Court sitting in Ikole-Ekiti to dissolve her marriage of 39 years with Chief Olusola Omolayo.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the husband was a member of the Ekiti House of Assembly from 2003 to 2007.

The 60 years old former regent was seeking dissolution on the ground of constant fighting, public disgrace and no proper care of the family by the husband.

According to her, she once attempted to divorce her husband in 2004, but the town chiefs, family members and the court prevailed on her and she withdrew the divorce suit.

She said that she could no longer withstand the beatings from her husband, in spite of the fact that no dowry was paid on her, adding that the association had produced four grown up boys.

The President of the Court, Mrs Yemisi Ojo asked, “what if court makes an order that your husband stops beating you and pays your dowry so that the matter be settled amicably?”

She insisted that she wanted to separate from her husband before he killed her.

However, the defendant denied all the allegations, saying he was  trying his best to take care of his family in his capacity.

“Although my wife sometimes assist me in paying the children’s school fees when I do not have money on me.

“But as a father and husband, I try my best to take care and do my fatherly responsibilities within my capacity,” he said.

Ruling on the matter, the court president said that both parties should produce their witnesses in the next adjourned date.

She added that the plaintiff must come with two of her children, emphasising that the second born must be one of them.

She adjourned the case till May 15, for continuation of hearing.

A 39-year old wife, Fadekemi Adeleye , on Monday told a Customary Court sitting in Aiyedun-Ekiti, in Ikole Local Government Area that she regretted divorcing her first husband.

Fadekemi lamented that the beating from her present husband, Adeleye Ojo, was worse than that from her former husband.

The estranged wife, who said her husband, (the defendant) would flare-up at the slightest provocation; prayed the court to dissolve her three-year- old marriage.

“I regretted that I took money from my present husband to file a divorce against my former husband.

“I have become a laughing stock in the area we live because of the beating and public disgrace.

“People in our area  now call me ‘Titilayo’ meaning “There is joy in beating.”

“My incumbent husband disgraces me in public, accusing me of having extra-marital affairs,” the woman said.

The woman also prayed the court for custody of the only daughter, Precious Adeleye, produced by the union and an order of the court for the release of her property in the man’s house.

The husband, Adeleye Ojo, in his defence denied allegation of constant fighting between him and his wife as well as not caring for the family as claimed by the wife

He said that he was not interested in any divorce as he did not want his daughter to suffer despite his wife’s insisting that she was no longer interested in the union.

The court presided over by a three-man panel reminded Fadekemi of its earlier plea to her that she should allow for a peaceful and an amicable settlement between her and her former husband.

It reminded her that she answered that she was blinded with love then for her new husband.

The court’s president, Mrs Yemisi Ojo, adjourned the case to March 27 for continuation of hearing.

  • Housewife seeks divorce over husband’s gambling addiction

Housewife seeks divorce over husband’s gambling addiction

A housewife, Omotayo Adewole, 35, on Monday approached an Ikole Customary Court in Ekiti state seeking the dissolution of her 16-year-old marriage to one Ojo Adewole, over his addiction to gambling

The plaintiff had filed a divorce suit against the defendant, Ojo Adewole, on the grounds of drunkenness, failure in parental responsibilities, constant fighting, lack of respect for her parents and non payment of her bride price.

In her testimony before the court on Monday, the woman alleged that her husband was an addicted gambler and a drunkard.

She lamented that gambling had made her husband a wretched and irresponsible family head that could not take care of the five children of the union nor provide for her as a wife.

She said the defendant spent all his income on gambling and drinks, “he is so addicted to gambling to the extent that he used my three cell phones, cooking stove and other house utensils to gamble.

“He started misbehaving since 2005 but I decided to cope with the situation hoping that he will change from the bad behaviour but nothing changed.

“He fights me, abuses my parents and threatens my life whenever I spoke against his gambling habit and am tired of him,’’ she stated.

The plaintiff further told the court that the defendant did not pay her bride price since they met 16 years ago and that she shouldered all the care and responsibilities of the five children from the union.

She urged the court to dissolve the marriage but allow the five children to be in her custody saying she would be able to care for them properly and asked for N20,000 monthly as maintenance allowance for the five children.

Two witnesses Mrs Rachael Oni and Kehinde Ogundipe, biological mother and senior sister of the plaintiff respectively, affirmed the testimony of the housewife and urged the court to dissolve the union.

The defendant, who did not object to the allegations against him, told the court that the plaintiff was the cause of all that happened to their marriage.

He, however, promised to narrate his own side of the story when called upon to defence.

Mrs Yemisi Ojo, President of the court adjourned the case to July 25 for continuation of hearing.
