  • Sexual assault: Court grants teacher N500,000 bail

    A secondary school teacher, Mr Ajayi Akintunde, was on Thursday granted N500, 000 bail in Lagos, over an alleged sexual assault of an 18-year-old secondary girl.

    An Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court, which granted the bail, asked him to provide two sureties as part of the conditions.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Yewande Aje-Afunwa, ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    She added that one of the sureties should be related to the defendant.

    The defendant, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of unlawful sexual assault.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Asp. Peter Nwangwu told the court that the offence was committed in 2018 at Fazi-I-Omat High School Iwaya, Lagos.

    Nwangwu said the defendant was arrested by the police after a case was reported at Iwaya Police Station.

    He said that the defendant had unlawful oral sex with the girl, when he forced her to suck his private part.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Section prescribes a 3-year jail term for any offenders.

    The girl had told the police on two different occasions that she succumbed to pressure and gave the teacher oral sex.

    She said that the teacher further demanded sex if she ever wanted to graduate from the school with her classmates, but she refused.

    The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed that the teacher was arrested and paraded at the police command.

  • Four men in court for stealing N30m gold jewellery

    The police on Thursday arraigned four men, who allegedly broke into  a house and stole gold jewellery worth N30 million  before Chief Magistrate, Yewande Aje-Afunwa of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The police charged Friday Daniel, 20 and Ojo Otiozuama, 20, who were housekeepers to the complainant Mrs Vivian Ologbosere, with three counts of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

    The police also charged Zubairu Saidu, 43 and Kabiru Isiaka, 30, with with receiving stolen goods.

    The Prosecutor, ASP  Peter Nwangwu, told the court that the Daniel and Otiozuma, conspired with others still at large, and stole the gold jewellery valued at N30 million.

    Nwangwu said they committed the offences on Dec. 22, 2018 at 8 p.m. at No. 39, Aggrey Road, Yaba Staff Quarters, Lagos.

    He said the defendants were later arrested by some policemen at Yaba.

    The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 287, 307 309, 328 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 287 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 328 stipulates 15 years for offenders.

    The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Magistrate Aje-Afunwa, granted the accused N3.5 million bail each with two responsible sureties each in like sum.

    Aje-Afunwa ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed in reputable companies and should have properties in Lagos.

    In addition, she ordered that the sureties must provide evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail condition.

    She adjourned the case until May 9, for hearing.

    Court remands father for killing his 10-year-old daughter

    A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday in Lagos remanded in prison a 33-year-old man, William Ime, who allegedly murdered his 10-year-old daughter.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, who gave the order, said the accused should remanded  in prison pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), adding that case file should be duplicated and forwarded to them promptly.

    The accused, who lives at Oko Ado Village, Ajah, on Lagos-Epe Expressway, is facing a charge of murder.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police  Godwin Anyanwu, told the court that Ime committed the offence on June 29 at his residence.

    He said the accused had out of provocation hit his daughter, Janet, with his hand several times and inflicted fatal internal injuries on her, adding that the child died from the injuries she sustained.

    Anyanwu said: “He hit her several times and she was confirmed dead from internal injuries. The accused was arrested following a complaint by members of his family and eyewitnesses.’’

    He said the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.The case has been adjourned till November 14.

    Security man, 40, charged with raping girl, 13

    A security guard, Matthew Sunday, who allegedly had carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl, appeared yesterday before a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos.

    Sunday, 40, who lives in Immaculate High School, Mende, Maryland, in Lagos, is standing trial for child rape.

    The Prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Godwin Anyanwu, told the court that the accused committed the offence on September 25, while guarding the school premises.

    Anyanwu said that defendant beckoned to the teenager, who was running an errand for her mother, grabbed her, and forced her into his room.

    “Sunday shut the door and forcefully had carnal knowledge of the teenager.

    “She came out of his room bruised and bleeding, which attracted the attention of some officials of the school.

    “She was then taken to the hospital with the school bus where it was confirmed that the teenager had been defiled,’’ the prosecutor said.

    He said the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, ordered that the file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 137 prescribes life imprisonment for anyone found liable of defilement of a minor.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Mrs Aje-Afunwa granted the accused N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum and adjourned the case to October 29 for DPP’s advice.
