  • Rapists get life sentence in Yobe

Yobe State government has taken steps to stem the growing cases of rape, homosexuality, lesbianism and other forms of unnatural sex practices involving men and animals in the state.

Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam apart from assenting into law the bill on ‘Yobe state Penal Code 2018 amendment bill’ which stipulates  life imprisonment for rape cases involving minors in the state has also vowed to allow the law takes its course regardless of who is involved.

The signing ceremony took place at the council chambers of Government House Damaturu.

Gov. Gaidam at the ceremony also noted that the event  was proactive measure aimed at  curtailing  the increase number of reported rape cases , kidnapping and unnatural offences in the state.

The governor while reading the provisions of the law said; “The law stipulates clearly that whoever commit rape, where the victim is a minor shall be punished with imprisonment for life and where the victim is an adult, shall be jailed for a term of twenty-five (25) years.

“The court shall award appropriate compensation to the victim as it deems fit in the circumstances” he said.

The law equally did not spare kidnappers and anybody found violating the provision will serve a jail term of 14 years.

“Whoever is ascertained and convicted to commit homosexual, lesbianism or bestiality l have committed unnatural offence and shall on conviction be punished with imprisonment for a term that may extend to 25 years or not below 14 years..”.

Gov. Gaidam also explained the commitment of his administration to the rule of law by the establishment of Citizens’ Rights Department in the State Ministry of Justice where public complaints are received and treated.

  • 2019: Senator Bukar Ibrahim denies conceding ambition

Former Yobe state governor, Senator Bukar Ibrahim has said he has not jettison his ambition for Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam, just as he insists on direct primaries for the 2019 general elections in Yobe State.

Sen Ibrahim was reacting to an online publication credited to Daily Posts that he has conceded the Yobe East senatorial seat to Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam but Bukar maintained that he is still in the race, adding that, “we will slug it out at the primary elections.”

He described the publication as false and misleading.

His words: “Free, fair and transparent direct primaries is the only way to deepen internal democracy in our great party the APC. It’s a democracy.

“Direct primaries are an inclusive way of deciding who flies the party flag with all bona fide members of the party having a chance to make their choice. It gives meaning to membership of the party as followers are included in taking vital decision like who represent their party in the general elections”.

“Making contests open and transparent, everybody having a say, as in direct primaries, is a true expression of democratic values which the APC strives to uphold, ” he said.

According to him “it’s amusing that some people think my tenure in the National Assembly is not eventful.

“I have scored 90 percent attendance plenary and immensely contributed to bills, motions, committee works, oversight functions and other matters of urgent national importance in the Senate.

“My constituency projects are well documented for posterity. Since 2007, I devoted my entire constituency development funds allocation for the three most critical areas impacting on rural dwellers; water, education and health. Over the years, I have constructed boreholes, skill acquisition centers, classrooms blocks, health centers, and even solar powered lightings, according to what the communities tell me they want.

“I have developed empowerment programmes across the 7LGAs in Yobe East. The people are intimately aware of and benefiting from them. It is only those who are afraid of the people that tell lies that I have done nothing, but the people know the truth”.

“As the Chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change I have intervened in the provision of over 1.2billion for the ongoing Accelerated Damaturu Drainages and Flood Controls Project to tackle the notorious and perennial cases of flooding in and around Damaturu, the State Capital to mention just a few”.

“It is for this reason the people of Yobe East reposed great confidence on me, will continue to vote for me again and again to represent them in the Senate, I have not disappointed them, so I am still in the race no more no less”, he explained.

In another development, the member House of Reps for Fika /Fune Federal Constituency Hon. Samaila Gadaka has dismiss as false the reports that he did not support the indirect primary election option adopted by the APC in Yobe State.

“I was at the meeting of the stakeholders and was part of the decision that made the resolutions. I have no contrary opinion about what transpired at the meeting. That was what we all agreed. For anybody to come out and use my name for his selfish reason is malicious and misleading,” Hon. Gadaka said.

He also informed that he is hundred percent in support of the choice of Alhaji Mai Mala Buni by Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam, while pledging his unflinching support for the aspirant.

  • Yobe APC divided over Gaidam’s choice of successor

…aspirant call for level playing ground, power rotation

The soul of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe state is no longer intact over the choice of Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam to anoint Alhaji Mai Mala Buni, the National Secretary of the party.

Despites the decision of the APC Critical stakeholders meeting in the state that mandated Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam to absolutely hand-pick the governorship candidate of the party come 2019 general election, another aspirant, Ibrahim Bomoi on Sunday stormed Damaturu amidst thousands of his supporters to commission his campaign office ahead of the primary elections of the party.

The former Director of Treasury of the Federal Capital Development Authority was greeted with a huge number of supporters in Damaturu which caused a gridlock along the Damaturu/Kano/Maiduguri highway where his office is located.

Fielding questions from journalists at the event, the Director of Bomoi Campaign Organization in Zone B, Alhaji Salleh Jauro called for power shift from Zone A which he said has enjoyed more political patronage in the state than any zone having ruled the state for more than twenty years.

Jauro also condemned the action of Gov. Gaidam for coming public to anoint a candidate to succeed him instead of providing a level playing ground for the aspirants at the contest.

He also disclosed that both Zone A and Zone B have teamed up to break the political hegemony that the Kanuris have enjoyed in the state, while calling for the total rejection of the Gov. Gaidam’s choice of Mai Mala Buni as the candidate for the party.

“It is morally wrong for Ibrahim Gaidam to choose any body from Zone A which is his zone to be governor of Yobe State again. This is a zone that has enjoyed more political patronage than any other zone in the state.  The APC National Secretary was zoned to Northeast and down to Yobe and Borno, Bonor gave it to Yobe and Ibrahim Gaidam gave it to Zone A, the minister is from zone A, the ambassador is from zone A. Zone A has ruled Yobe for twenty years now and Ibrahim Gaidam will now pick a governor from Zone A and from Gujba again where Bukar ruled for more than ten years. This is unacceptable. Gov. Gaidam should have shown justice by allowing Zone B to complete the tenure of their son Late Mamman Ali who appointed him deputy and ruled for eighteen months before he died. After zone B, then we would have handed the governorship to Zone C in the spirit of rotation,” Jauro said.

On whether they would leave the party, Alh. Jauro said, “there is no question of leaving the party. We are going to stay inside and ensure victory on our side. It is Allah that gives power and we believe in Allah and by His grace our candidate Ibrahim Bomoi will emerge victorious”.

  • Yobe APC chairman escapes removal from office

     …denies resignation rumours

The State Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) Adamu Chilariye and some members of his exco on Friday escaped Gov. Gaidam’s wrath over allegations of disloyalty and unhealthy relationship with some political aspirants.

The Nation investigation revealed Governor Ibrahim Gaidam and his Deputy Abubakar Aliyu  with members of the party executives,  some  stakeholders and othe top  government officials convened a crucial  meeting yesterday at  the governor’s office over allegations of disloyalty on the State Party Chairman, Adamu Chilariyel  and some members of his exco.

Prior to the meeting on Friday, a source told The Nation that the chairman of the party may be removed or issued a  stern warning  from Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam over allegations of his romance with one or some governorship aspirants contrary to the governor’s endorsement.

The source revealed that Mr. Chilariye has exhibited some level of disloyalty to the governor by supporting a particular aspirant without the approval of the governor who is yet to announce his successor come 2019.

A stalwart of the party in the state who does not want to be mentioned informed that the governor is very angry with the action of the party chairman and the consequences may be dire.

Another source revealed that Mr. Chilariye had earlier put in a resignation but was turned down by the governor asking him to await the outcome of the investigation panel which is chaired by the commissioner of works, transport and energy, Lawan Shettima.

An insider from the meeting told our correspondent that the governor decided to give Mr. Chilariye a second chance but asked him to go to the press and publicly disassociate himself with any person aspiring to be governor in the state.

“The meeting was hot and tense. He was told the truth and he admitted his mistakes so the governor decided to ask him to go an denounced publicly those he has been romancing with to press. He is lucky. This is like a warning to him. We opted for the warning so as not to create tension in the system. Yobe State APC is one of the most disciplined and we can’t afford to be seeing in bad light,” the source informed.

At the press briefing which was held at the NUJ Press Centre in Damaturu, Mr. Chilariye while fielding questions from reported denied that he never at any point contemplated of resigning his position.

He also informed that the party is not backing a particular candidate, just as he maintained that no aspirant has written to the party of their intention to contest the 2019 election.

The chairman also warned aspirants spreading false claims that they were endorsed by the party hierarchy in the state.

“As preparation for the 2019 general elections, it has come to the notice of the State Executive Committee (SEC) of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Yobe State that some political aspirants have begun to deceive our teeming members that the State SEC has anointed or endorse them.

“The State Exco disassociates itself from such utterances.

“The SEC wishes to state that it has no anointed aspirant and will only support the candidate that emerges as the party’s flag bearer during the primary elections.

“Whosoever claims that the party exco is behind him at this stage is only telling lies just to deceive the unsuspecting members of our party,” Mr. Chilariye said.

The chairman also accused PDP political holders in Zone B of using surrogates to purchase voters card within Potiskum town at the rate of N5,000, adding that his party has already lodged a complaint to security over the matter.

  • Yobe cuts down fertilizer price for farming season

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State has slashed down the price of fertilizer from N8000 to N3000 for farmers in the state for the 2018 cropping season.

The Governor disclosed this at flagged off ceremony for sales and distribution of the commodity to farmers in the state for 2018 cropping season in the state.

According to the governor, government should not be a money making venture but rather ameliorate the suffering of the people hence the subsidy on the product.

He noted that the subsidy will give every Yobe farmer the opportunity to afford the product having suffered from the challenges of Boko Haram insurgency.

Gov. Gaidam noted that with the heavy subsidy of the product is a strategy by his administration to ensure food security in the state since agriculture is the mainstay of the people of the state.

“Consequent upon the state executive  council meeting of 5th July, 2018, we  approved the sum of N1,468,800,000.00 to procure 8,640 metric tons of 15-15-15 NPK fertilizer and make it available to our farmers for 2018 cropping season”

“Though the price of fertilizer has gone up, but due to our commitment to the promotion of agricultural activities in our dear state, we have resolved to approved the sales  of a bag of fertilizer at a subsidized  rate of N3,000.00 per bag”. Gaidam ordered.

The governor called on farmers to make good use of the product and should not be tempted by the antics of middlemen who may entice them with the promise of buying it at more than the official approved price.

Each of the seventeen local government councils of the state got an allocation of 3,000 bags with strong warning to the taskforce committee that the products are sold to genuine farmers.

In another development, Gov. Gaidam had also distributed start-up equipment to 55 graduate trainees as part of its economic empowerment and poverty alleviation programme in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme.

The Nation checks reveal that over 120 youths were trained in various life supporting skills at Peugeot automobile Limited Kaduna and Yola Technical Training centre.

The Chairman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria Yobe State Usman Ngari praised the commitment of the governor to the farmers in the state to realise their potentials.

“With this heavy subsidy that government has given us, it’s now left for us to go and do our best to feed the nation,” Ngari said.

Some of the farmers who spoke to our correspondent also commended the subsidy of the government but regretted that the fertilizer is coming late.

“I will try and buy to keep it for the next cropping season. As for this season, it’s already late”, one of the farmers informed.

  • ‘I slept like a baby the first day I used a sanitary pad’

Hajara bursts out of the crowd of women and ran briskly to her house down the middle of the Village. Almost with the speed of light, she rejoined her fellow women in the group she left a short while proudly holding her sanitary pad to the admiration of all.

Though some of the women smiled at her with envy, others were genuinely happy and proud of one of their own privileged to discard their age long practice and embrace the modern technique of managing menstrual period.

For the benefit of our readers, Hajara’s action was only to prove a point to this writer who had gathered the women from Wadai Village, one of the remote villages from Nguru Local Government in Yobe State and inquired to know if any of them ever saw a sanitary pad.

Quite frankly, the challenges the rural women in Nigeria  faced in managing their menstrual circle and the age long practices of using rags, leafs and in some cases sand-powder  is appallingly unacceptable.

Recently, the Executive Director Complete Care Foundation, Barr. Aisha Wakil popularly known as Mama Boko Haram has also given her voice against the despicable practices and the conditions of the women and the need to address the issue.

Bar. Wakil through her NGO has embarked on hygiene promotion and education of women IDPs in Borno State at the Displaced Peoples Camps to achieve this noble objective. The story is however changing with serious outputs translating to significant impacts in many rural communities in northern Nigeria.

Bar. Wakil, during an advocacy visit to Emir of Kano, Alhaji Lamido Sanusi, said: “One of the effects of insurgency is that women and girls are using sand and ashes in place of sanitary pad for their menses and this is unhygienic and unhealthy for women and girls.

“Menstrual pad is a luxury for poor women in Borno. Strange as it may sound but poor women and girls in community and IDP camps are still using rags filled with sand, or ashes as an alternative for sanitary napkins during their menstrual period, thus exposing themselves more to vaginal infections,” Mama Boko Haram said.

The story of Hajara and some other rural women in Yobe communities is just a tip of the iceberg of one of the success stories of the impact the hygiene promotion campaign UNICEF has carried out in some rural communities in the State.

Narrating her encounter with the new hygiene and health practices, the 41yr old housewife of seven children said she no longer have issues of itching and infections around her private part since she started using the modern sanitary pad.

Hajara recalled the first day she used a modern sanitary pad. Her story is merely a graphic picture of what many rural women have faced for years which she succinctly described as years of darkness and ignorance.

At 40, Hajara she has battled with leafs, rags soaked with ashes powder to manage her menses until five years ago when she was introduced to the world of a modern sanitary pad.

“Sometimes you never understood you are in the dark until light shines on you. For us, using leafs, rags and sand was the only thing we knew in the past. Sometimes we don’t use anything at all. We were careless about our health without any serious consideration until UNICEF opened our eyes. We are in the light now. With the use of the pad, you even forget that you are menstruating. I first day I used this(pointing to the sanitary pad in her left hand), I slept like a new born baby that has just been breast fed by his mother,  Hajara recalled.

Hajara says her husband supports her from time to time in providing the pad anytime she could not afford to get one.

“My husband normally gets it for me from time to time when he goes to the market. I am so grateful for the support he has been giving to me,” she disclosed.

Explaining on how she was able to win her husband’s heart in accepting the practice, Hajara said, “I think my husband understands that if I am well, it will be beneficial to him and our entire household as well. The same thing if I am not healthy it will affect him too. I convinced him to understand the importance of the use of the pad after we were educated by the UNICEF people and he accepted it with his whole heart,” she said.

Ari’am Modu is 25 years with three children. She has embraced new hygiene practices brought to the local community. Her testimony though not reflected on one of her children in her arms as flies feast on his unkempt nose flowing with cough. She however admitted that she has imbibed the culture of bathing and oiling her children not less than three times in a day, as well as avoiding to dress them with dirty clothes.

Haruna Maigari is the village head of Wadai. According to him his community has seen the wisdom to embrace the new hygiene and health practices brought to them by UNICEF, just as they have given every support to women in the community to learn and accept everything they are been taught.

The women in the community get all the support needed for the healthy development of their community,” Maigari said.

Hajiya Hauwa Liman is a thorn in the flesh of rural women in Bulturi Village, another remote settlement in Nguru Local Government Area. The sight of Hauwa Liman always send cold shivers in the spines of the women especially those that failed in their duties to keep their houses clean.

Hauwa Liman is a Community Hygiene Promoter whose Job title is to ensure the cleanliness of the women and the entire community.  For her to deliver in her mandate, she was trained by UNICEF officials on hygiene and sanitation. I was eager to meet her as the boys ran to inform her of my visit. Curiously, my expectations were met as Hauwa appeared from the north-eastern corner of the village dressed in her clean red hijab and walked towards me as we exchanged warm pleasantries.

Narrating her story not difficult to her at all. She informed me that the job has earned her respect and enemies in the early period she began but all that has changed.

“It was really a big challenge when we first started but Alhamidilah we have over-come some of the problems.  From the beginning it was difficult for the women to embrace the changes. Some even see me as a nuisance to them but I kept on pushing and never relented. I am happy that today, I can proudly say that most of the women in Bulturi if not all understand the importance of keeping their environment clean, taking care of their children, taking care of their personal hygiene. It is truly rewarding for us as a community,” Hajiya Hauwa informed.

According to Hauwa, her job has been made easier because of the cooperation she enjoys from her fellow women who have quickly adapted to the hygiene practices of the training they have acquired from UNICEF officials.

One of the women from the community, Zainabu confirms that the fear of Hauwa is the acceptance of basic hygiene practice.

Every woman in the community knows her with what she does. If Hauwa comes visiting in your house and your children are dirty, your name is sorry. She will make sure that you do the right thing. Some women go into hiding on the sight of Hauwa,” Zainabu informed.

Falmata Maigari, is the wife of the Village Head of Bulturi Village. Together with Hauwa, the duo have stood firm to ensure that the women in the village keep to the new hygiene practices brought by UNICEF in their community.

“We are the custodians of this community. The children are ours. We have to put in our best to make sure they are healthy. I never knew before but these people (apparently referring to UNICEF) people have come to open our eyes so we are now healthier than we use to be. Many families here no longer go to the hospital because of the way we take care of our children and ourselves now”, she explained.

As the wife of the village head, Falmata told me that together with Hauwa, they have formed a formidable team to make sure those women that comply with better hygiene practices are rewarded though not with money but praises while the less performing ones are encouraged to do more.

“We make sure that women that take care of their households are commended while those that are found wanting are encouraged to step up their game.

Huawa  go from house to house  to teach the women  about basic  hygiene practices like: hand-washing with soap and water after using the toilet, before eating, how to take care of your body, keeping  your environment clean inside and outside.

We have realized that our personal cleanliness is very important if not people will get bad things in their food that will cause illness. Since we started this, all the small small sickness has vanished among us. Nothing like cholera in our communities again, ”  Falmata explained.

In an encounter with the Chairman of Nguru Local Government, Hon. Alhaji Ali Maidami , he was short of words to express his gratitude with the manner that UNICEF has transformed rural communities to become even more free from diseases than in the urban areas.

According to him, “the structures put in place for the sustenance of the projects is what excites me. Most of the structures that UNICEF has put in all the projects and program executed in our rural communities have very solid sustainable plans. This is because they have trained our rural people in the management of the projects.  This will help us to build on that even after they must have left. Our joy to UNICEF and our Governor Ibrahim Geidam is immeasurable.

“Our rural communities are now living a heathier life than people living in urban areas. Most of the communities in my local government have been declared free from open defecation courtesy of the work carried out by UNICEF. This is quite commendable,” Maidami said.

Senior Local Government Facilitator UNICEF-WSSSRP for Nguru Local Government, Lawan Mohammed informed that the baseline survey for hygiene and sanitation for Nguru and Bade was very low but shot up after the intervention from UNICEF.

It was not easy getting the people to accept and observe these basic hygiene practices. We kept on pushing and gradually we have come to this point. In Nguru LGA, we are working in 144 communities and 75 of them have been declared Open defecation Free (ODF). In Bade, out of 132, 63 are ODF,” Lawan informed.

  • ‘Energy transition for Nigeria a must’ Says Senate

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Senator Bukar Abba has advocated for the adoption of renewable energy to check climate change impacts in the country.

Abba said the time for the country to embrace cleaner energy is now, thus need to shift investments from fossil to renewable energy.

The lawmaker representing Yobe East Federal Constituency, Yobe State, made the call at the launch of ‘Just Energy Transition’ at organized by the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria in Abuja.

He promised to sponsor a bill for an Act in the National Assembly on energy transition adding that energy transition is a must for the nation.

His words: “Just energy transition for Nigeria is a must; we cannot run away from it. With these entire documents, i have an additional tasks of studying and understanding them and to present them to the Senate President of Nigeria, for it to be passed and signed into law by our beloved President.

“Insha Allah, i will lead this version right to the national assembly to ensure it reach its natural end to have just energy transition in our country.”

“I am absolutely prepared and totally committed to push the bill,” Ibrahim stated adding that he would locate the pending bills on environmental regulation and protection and ensure it is passed.

“Energy issues are very important to humanity but today,” he added.

Earlier, ERA Executive Director, Dr. Uyi Ojo said the project launch was to promote adoption of alternative energy source such as renewable clean energy rather than fossil fuel.

He said the nation has shown some commitments in paper as parts of efforts to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent unconditionally and 45 per cent conditionally by 2030.

According to him, a just energy transition would foster adequate provisions of climate and energy solutions for everyone.

“The future we want is energy access that is clean, reliable and affordable, a healthy environment and decent green jobs. Hence there is need for divestment from fossil fuel development to pave the way for decentralised energy systems in mini-grids, off-grids and non-grid systems in ways that individuals and communities participate as presumes i.e producers and consumers in the energy production, and supply chain as well as share in the benefits.”

“This manifesto launches Nigeria forward on the pathway to the Just Energy Transition,” Ojo stated.

  • I’ll re-contest though I sponsored few bills – Senator

Senator Aba Bukar Ibrahim, a three-term governor of Yobe State and three-term senator, said on Thursday he did not sponsor many bills for about 12 years he has been at the National Assembly

He however insisted that he was going to re-contest for another term in the Senate come 2019.

He said, “Apart from being a three-term governor in my state, Yobe, I am also a three-term senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but still counting.

“I haven’t actually sponsored many bills. But to my mind, what is important in National Assembly is to support the right bills that are important to the nation.

“That is what I really depend on.  I’m not a bill creator. I also believe I have been supporting the right thing since I came to the National Assembly for almost 12 years ago. And I have been attracting projects to my constituency.”

Asked to consider his age, Ibrahim said, “I’m 69 years old now and, by next year, I will be 70. I had intended to go for the presidential race earlier but because of my respect for Buhari.

“We shall always respect our elders and I couldn’t have claimed to do more than Buhari. Do I withdrew along with senator Yerima of Zamfara State. Now that he is interested to go back for the second term, I am still ready to wait.

“If by the time he finishes, I don’t feel good, health-wise, I will just quietly go back to the Senate. If on the other hand, I am considered fit for the presidency, why not? Senate is not meant for young people, per se. You have a mix of the old, middle aged and young ones.”

Ibrahim however insisted that he has an uncommon style of politics.

“My pattern of politics does not centre on money and thuggery. I don’t terrorize the people but I prefer to serve.”

On how he is going to slugg it out with his state governor, Ibrahim Geidam, who is reported to have shown interest for the Senate seat, the lawmaker said that he was prepared to battle the governor.

He said that Geidam has not told him that he is eying the Senate seat for Yobe East.

He said, “As far as I know, he (Geidam) has not told me that he is interested to come to the Senate. He knows that I want to come back to the Senate. If he wants to slug it with me, I am ready to face him.”

  • Children’s Day: Our kids, Our future

A child in Nigeria is any youth/citizen between the ages of 0 to 17 years. At that period, the individual is not responsible for him or herself, and therefore has to be taken care of by parents or guardians

It cannot be debated that children are the future of every country. They are the future of a great nation only if given a solid foundation on which a better society can be built. The direction of a nation therefore can be gauged by the importance that nation places on its children and youths.

Children’s Day is annually observed in Nigeria on May 27. The holiday is celebrated by government and non-governmental organizations. The standard practice is to select children from each school to participate in a match-past to salute the state leader in the stadium in competition with other schools.

The government of Nigeria also organizes an annual parade and selects schools or any other organization that can participate in this event. Sometimes primary and secondary schools participate in military parades and children have an opportunity to do jobs that adults would normally do.

Statistics has shown that about 42% of the Nigerian population are children and 1/3 of children aged from 6 to 14 don’t go to schools. Many children leave schools for different purposes and children’s rights are often violated on daily basis. Unfortunately, the government of Nigeria don’t make much to solve the problems connected with children’s right violation and imperfect system of education.

More also, Seventy percent of children live below the poverty line with Nigeria also having a very high infant mortality rate of 93.93 per 1000 births. (This compares to 6.3/1000 in the US).

Read Also: Sweet Sensation to feed 5,000 Indigent Children on Children’s Day

The children are also exposed to kidnapping, street trading, lack of qualitative education, malnutrition and a host of others.

Meanwhile, the idea of dedicating a day for children’s day in Nigeria started in 1964 through the endorsement of the United Nations children’s effort. This initiative was introduced as a way of protecting the children’s rights against violation of any kind within the member states of United Nation.

Going forward, the current pathetic situation in Nigeria should sincerely propel us to inquire about the rationale behind this year’s observance of the Children’s Day celebration where the Boko Haram insurgent group kidnapped some Chibok girls, while in a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State where they were writing their West African Senior School Certificate examination since April 14, 2014.

It is therefore the opinion of the writer that the 2014 edition of the celebration should have been shelved in solidarity with the adverse prevailing circumstances weighing heavily against Nigerian kids. This would not have diminished whatever achievements the government is making against being held hostage by the Islamic militants, but rather portray the government as sensitive and caring for citizens it swore an oath to protect.

Nigeria has in the past made many mistakes where it concerns her citizens, it might not be too late for government to start showing empathy and commitment to things that will make the ordinary Nigerian have a sense of belonging and regale in the thought of being a Nigerian. We are indeed waiting for the end to this whole drama.

However, this year celebration should be channeled towards protecting the children’s rights that are being violated by the rather seem unruly evil men covered in human skin. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow and we can’t avoid ruining their future on the altar of killings, kidnapping, and child trafficking among other anomalies in our society.

In summary, as we celebrate this year children’s day, we should have this in the back of mind that the greatest asset we can ever invest for our future is to make a champ out of our children by giving them the best gift they would ever imagine. Remember that our kids are our future and they must be cared for if we must achieve our dream as parents or guardians.
