  • How I will defeat Gaidam, by PDP candidate

Former Chairman of Bursari Local Government Area of Yobe State Alhaji Abba  Ganatata has vowed to send Governor Ibrahim Gaidam  to political retirement by defeating him  in next year’s senatorial election.

Both candidates are contesting for the Zone A senatorial seat. Gaidam is running on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC). He got the ticket unopposed after former Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim stepped down for him, following series of peace meetings and horse-trading,

Ganatata got the PDP ticket without any friction within the party hierarchy.

Ganagtata, whose posters have flooded the streets of Damaturu,  the capital, said he will be a beeter senator than Gaidam.

He said: “I know I can represent my people at the senate better than Governor Ibrahim Gaidam. My people also know that and they are going to make a good choice of me rather than voting Governor Ibrahim Gaidam for the Senate. I know he has served as a governor for about ten years now but I am not afraid of him. I am ready for him,” Tata boasted.

Ganatata added: “What I did while as chairman of Bursari local Government has never been outmatched by any chairman in the history of Yobe State  after so many years of my exit. As a member of the board of TETfund, I have brought development to all tertiary institutions across Yobe, not just my zone. You can go and verify that.

“I am a grassroot politician who is connected to the people and at the same time very accessible to the common people taking care of their needs. I will not be a lawmaker that builds a wall around me to fend off my constituents but rather my people will constitute the wall around to form a formidable force that will affect their needs through impactful legislations,” Tata explained.

“My track records have shown that I use to give my people every sense of belonging and bring to them what belongs to them in everything that I do. If elected as senator, I will defend them, stand for them and also serve them well.”

  • UN office spends $70m on humanitarian assistance in Borno, Adamawa, Yobe

THE United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (COHA) said it has spent $70 million in providing humanitarian assistance in the Northeastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

Head of Communications, OCHA Samantha Newport stated this in Lagos yesterday while briefing reporters on the UN’s humanitarian efforts in the Northeast.

Newport said the humanitarian crisis in Northeast, which has spilled into neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger, is one of the most severe in the world.

She said: “More than seven million people are affected in the three worst affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

“1.8 million people are displaced internally. With other global crises competing for scarce resources, the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) – a funding mechanism – was set up in May 2017.

“The NHF is managed by COHA under the leadership of the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Edward Kallon. The NHF has raised $70 million from 17 donor countries.”

According to her, the funds have been allocated to urgent life-saving needs, with an emphasis this year assisting new arrivals with food, shelter and safe water.

She said the NHF had continued to assist internally displaced people in crowded camps and host communities, where services are stretched with new arrivals and hunger, malnutrition and sickness are rife.

    were Nigerians.

Newport added that the UN, in collaboration with the private sector in Nigeria,  would on Nov. 15 inaugurates its first NHF Private Sector Initiative (NHF-PSI) to provide more funds for humanitarian assistance in the north east.

  • ‘I never said Buhari will lose in North East’

Senator Bukar Abba has denied media reports that he said President Muhammadu Buhari will not win in the North East, saying the president would win conveniently in the forthcoming 2019 presidential poll.

Bukar Abba stressed that there is no way the ruling party; the All Progressive Congress (APC) will lose the election.

His conviction, according to a statement signed by his media aide, Mr. Yusuf Ali was based on the great work the president has done in the last three and half years.

Yusuf quoted the senator as saying that: “As far as I am alive, there is nothing that will make Buhari fail in the North East. Not in Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, or Taraba. There is no way he will lose the election. By the grace of God, Buhari will win the election and serve his second term.

“I Bukar Abba, I am in APC now, tomorrow I will be in APC by the grace of God. I will forever be in APC, if they don’t change the party. Nothing will separate me with my party the APC”.

The senator, Yusuf added has vowed to forever be a member of the All Progressives Congress, a party he fought hard to build. He said it was him and Dr Ogbonnaya Onu the then Chairman of the ANPP that first initiated the merger for the mega party of the opposition to form APC and save the country from the PDP.

Describing the Senator as “an Elder Statesman in his own right who does not He deserve to be called unprintable names”, Yusuf said it was obvious the three time lawmaker was quoted out of context, noting that “he has pledged his support for the APC and Buhari in the 2019 general elections.”

  • 2019: Stakeholders predict APC victory in Yobe

The candidature of President Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Maimala Buni for president and governorship respectively, remained an assurance for the victory of the party in 2019 in the state.

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) stakeholders made the prediction in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Damaturu.

Alhaji Bakura Usman, a former party executive, told NAN that the state had in the last four years under the Buhari administration enjoyed federal presence.

“The Federal Government is now reconstructing the Nguru-Gashua-Bayamari highway, awarded several years ago but abandoned.

“Government has recently completed the 330KVA electricity transmission line and put to use and also supported the Federal Medical Centre, Nguru and several others,” Bakura said.

He assured that APC would have a resounding victory in 2019.

“The personal qualities and competence of our candidates have made our campaigns much easier in Yobe.”

Alhaji Ali Mohammed, a chieftain of the party, said “the peaceful conduct of the party primaries and emergence of Maimala Buni was widely accepted and celebrated.

“Buni provides the people with a new hope for continuity of the sustainable development programmes of the Gaidam administration.

“The state is optimistic that Buni will prioritise prompt payment of salaries, pension and gratuities, provision of affordable, accessible and qualitative healthcare delivery and other people-oriented projects.

“It is very heart warming that even PDP traditional supporters in the state are endorsing the candidature of Buni as governorship candidate.

“His support cuts across party lines and geo-political sentiments, he enjoys support in all the 17 local government areas in the state,” Mohammed said.

Alhaji Alkali Musa, another chieftain, said “Maimala has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities by mending fences and reaching out to all party stakeholders, including the aggrieved.

“In fact, Buhari and Buni should be concentrating more on their programmes for Yobe because there is no problem delivering the state to APC in 2019, it is already a won election,” Musa said.

  • NEMA: Welcome Back My Country

Human beings are prone to calamities which, in most cases, are beyond human imagination and control.  These calamities are capable of causing untold physical and emotional stress to every discerning mind.  Occurrences like fire outbreaks, chemical spill, flood disasters, gun attacks, insurgents’ activities and even physical threats among several others could result to emergency situations.  People don’t pray for disasters to happen but they pray to see a helper when it happens.
Emergency situations as enumerated above, sometimes occur from natural causes or otherwise.  However, the varying causes notwithstanding, a practical understanding of such situations and adequate responses to them will reduce their impacts and increase people’s chances of survival.
The management of such emerging situations in Nigeria is the statutory responsibility of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).  And this very important Agency has consistently played significant roles in emergency situations, particularly the recent efforts to addressing issues relating to flood disasters and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the middle belt and northeast axis where activities of gunmen and insurgency are pervasive.
NEMA was established, through Act 12 as amended by Act 50 of 1999, to manage natural and man-made disasters in Nigeria.  The agency was designed to formulate policy on all activities relating to disaster management and coordinate the plans and programmes for efficient and effective response to disasters at national level.
But how did Nigerians perceived NEMA’s activities and reactions to emergency situations in the country?  Going down memory lane, many Nigerians considered the performance of NEMA in the discharge of its responsibilities as abysmal and far below expectations.
The Agency was perceived to be bad in all departments – poor policy formulation and planning; inadequate data collation and report from relevant agencies to enhance forecasting, planning and field operations; poor capacity and ability to coordinate activities of other stakeholders in disaster management; and unacceptable response time in emergency situations.
But the current management in NEMA under the leadership of the Director General, Engr. Mustapha Maihaja has transformed the Agency beyond imaginations.  The newly improved NEMA has developed capacity for effective and efficient disaster management in Nigeria.
Many of us are still oblivious that NEMA has greater capacity to reasonably deliver on its statutory obligations under the current leadership of Engr. Maihaja.  The Agency recorded impressive strides in the area of timely response to emergency situations across the country and has been consistently visible and effectively felt in crisis situations.  Its visibility is clearly demonstrated especially in the humanitarian crisis in Boko Haram infested region of the northeastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
Engr. Mustapha Maihaja is desirous to bringing succour to victims of emergency situations by giving palliatives to ameliorate the suffering and pains that comes with it.  The DG said that “one key parameter in disaster management was prompt response by the Agency ”.
NEMA’s commitment was indeed reflected in the improved and timely response accorded to not only the internally displaced persons (IDPS) in the Northeast, but victims of the recent flood disasters across the states.  The flooding was virtually in all geopolitical zones of the country which left hundreds of thousands homeless.  Houses, farmlands, barnyards, resident estates, and commercial plazas are submerged while affected victims depended on NEMA for their shelter and feedings.
NEMA’s commitment and efficiency was also felt by those adversely affected by mass deportation and repatriation from foreign countries, especially Mali and Libya where many Nigerians ended up in search of green pastures.
Only recently, the people of Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State were so impressed with the almost clinical performance of NEMA and praised them highly for a job well done.  They are particularly happy that internally displaced and distressed individuals are properly given medical attention and food items. They noted that camps are being constructed and mobile clinics were set up to carter for medical need.  To the people of Dikwa, it is a great departure from what obtained in the past.
Engr. Mustapha Maihaja has successfully domesticated in NEMA the global best practices of disaster risk reduction which emphasizes disaster prediction, hazards’ analysis, resilient capacity building and awareness creation.  The agency also distributed relief materials to victims of disasters in emergency situations across the country and to other needy nations.
NEMA success in this regards earned it the respect of some foreign institutions and bodies who partner with the agency mostly on capacity building. The United Nation’s humanitarian agency, World Food programmes (WFP), visited NEMA and commended its initiatives and programmes in addressing disaster related problems in Nigeria.
The Vision of Engr. Maihaja is to elevate NEMA to a world class status in the nearest future.  He identified some gaps and shortcomings of the agency, and organized several workshops to share its understanding to review, to enforce and re-position NEMA in a way that it can better operate efficiently, effectively to gear it towards the envisaged world-class agency.
And as part of his restructuring strategies, Engr. Maihaja has been very creative and innovative.  The DG underscores the need for the agency to create a response and recovery department in line with the best world practices.  Maihaja said the department would encompass search, rescue and recovery as a result of any emergency.
To complement its capacity building initiatives in NEMA, Engr. Mustapha Maihaja’s led team is committed to an improved workers welfare package and human capital development.  As a show of dedication, management recently approved new and enhanced condition of service for staff of the agency.
The DG reiterated the need for improved welfare scheme commensurate with what is obtainable in other countries. He initiated the process to commence the 2018 promotion exercise in the agency, and went even further to secure approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) for Group Life Insurance for Staff in view of increasing emergency needs.
The agency has fostered strong working relationship with all relevant national and international agencies including the United Nations Institutions for the reduction of disaster. Engr. Maihaja’s aim is to strengthen modern administrative and managerial skills as well as technological advancement to boost efficiency in NEMA.

The change of guard that brought Engr. Mustapha Maihaja on board as DG NEMA is a blessing that has transformed the Agency positively.  NEMA’s recent outing and its proactive responses have demonstrated that the system is back in line with the vision of our founding fathers.
The ever resilient, pertinacious and dogged DG, Engr. Maihaja whom since assuming the leadership of NEMA, has restlessly traverse all the nooks and crannies of affected states despite obvious challenges.  Maihaja and NEMA are doing everything possible to lift up our citizens who are faced with various disasters in and outside Nigeria.
Engr. Mustapha Maihaja’s great stride in NEMA is a testimony that Nigeria is back and working for the masses.
  • Yobe South: I remain authentic PDP senatorial candidate – Hassan

The Senator representing Yobe South Senatorial District under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mohammed Hassan, popularly called DEMBU has laid claims that he remained the most authentic candidate elected to fly the flag of the party in next year’s general elections.

The Nation reports that both Sen. Mohammed Hassan and Former Minister of Police Affairs, Adamu Maina Waziri emerged as candidates of the party at two parallel senatorial primary elections that were held in Potiskum on Tuesday.

But Sen. Mohammed Hassan has insisted that the team that conducted his election was “more genuine and authentic than any other character that is claiming to be a candidate of the party for the senatorial seat”.

According to him, four, out of the five man electoral committee sent from the PDP National headquarters including the chairman and the secretary of the committee conducted his election in the full observance of INEC and security protection.

“I can’t imagine that some characters are laying claims of been elected as candidate for Yobe South senatorial seat. As far as I am concerned, I have been authentically and genuinely returned as the candidate of the party in an election that took place under a very fair and transparent process.

“I want you to note that out of the five members of the electoral committee of the PDP that came from Abuja, four including the Chairman and the Secretary presided over my election. I want to ask, who did the other election. In my own opinion, there was only one election which I am declared the winner,” Sen. Mohammed said.

On his part, Adamu Main Waziri could not answer my calls or respond to a text message I sent to him.

The Nation recalled that at the two parallel primaries held at Idrissa Cinima, Adamu Waziri emerged winner with a wide margin of 341 votes followed by Sen. Mohammed Hassan with 15 votes, while at the other venue, where a similar election was also held, Adamu Waziri and his nephew Haruna Bawa Waziri trailed with 3 and 5 votes respectively from Sen. Mohammed Hassan who pulled 324.

  • Yobe lawmaker defects to PDP, gets automatic ticket

A member of Yobe State House of Assembly Hon. Abdu Mamman Zoto, has defected to the opposition PDP in the state.

Zoto who represents  Damagum  Constituency in Yobe State House of Assembly under the ruling APC now has an automatic of the PDP which his former party the APC has denied him.

He told journalists in Damaturu that he has been forced out of the party by his “political adversaries”.

He disclosed that the APC in the state is hostile to him and could no longer achieve his desire to represent his people hence his decision to move on to the PDP who have given him the needed support to actualize his dreams.

“Since after the 2015 general elections,  some people went and blackmailed me at the government house.   They told so many lies to the Governor, they claimed that I was involved in anti party activities.  That I distributed Yariman Gudi’s relief materials and all sorts of mischief. They went ahead to suspend me from the APC.  They also claimed to have expelled me from the party.

“I still remained in doing my legislative duties, at last they barred me from entering the Government House.  For several years I don’t enter Yobe Government House, I was never involved in all government activities. The worst thing that happened was during the party congresses,  they removed all my supporters from the delegate list.  No single person was left to me.

“At last while preparing for my continuity in 2019 they insisted on holding primaries where I don’t have a single delegate,  I consulted PDP officials in Yobe State and  they welcomed me.  They have been waiting for me to join their party since.  They know my strength in my constituency,  I have large number of supporters and you know politics is a game of number. PDP decided to offer me automatic ticket to contest for my seat in 2019,” Zoto disclosed.
