Yobo may move to South Africa

AfricanFootball.com  can exclusively reveal that  former Nigeria skipper Joseph Yobo is believed to be considering a sensational move to one of the top clubs in South Africa in January.

Yobo, 34, is a free agent after he was released by Turkish champions Fenerbache and a top source has now informed AfricanFootball.com the highly experienced central defender is favourably disposed to rounding up a career that has spanned over 17 years and taken him to England, France, Belgium and Turkey.

The defender, who won a record 100th cap for Nigeria at the World Cup in Brazil earlier this year, is so serious about a move to South Africa that he is already discussing buying a house in that country.

“Yobo fell in love with South Africa after leading Nigeria to both the 2010 World Cup and 2013 AFCON there. He even now wants to buy a house there and has already begun discussions in this regard,” the source informed.

“He has not played again since the World Cup in Brazil in the summer, but he believes he still has something to offer in the game.

“His likely destination will be one of the top three clubs in South Africa.”

Yobo, who is one of only seven players to play every minute of every game in the EPL for Everton in the 2006/07 season, is currently back in Nigeria.

    Yobo dismayed by Afcon miss

Former Nigerian captain, Joseph Yobo, has expressed pain at the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) in Equatorial Guinea.

The 34-year-old defender, who called time on international football after featuring for the African champions at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil, is shocked that the Nigerian team will not be at the AFCON.

He added that he called it quits from international football to allow younger players take charge after a 13-year spell with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Yobo, however, does not believe that his quitting international football played a part in Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the continent’s biggest football competition.

“It is quite disappointing that the team will not be at the Nations Cup. It is disappointing for the country as a whole. But we have to recover from this quickly.

“I spent about 13 years with the national team and I don’t think it is a matter of if I was there that this could have happened or it couldn’t have happened. But I left the scene for younger players to have the chance to play at the biggest level because I also started while I was a young player,” he told journalists in Abuja on Thursday while watching the training session of Nigeria’s Under-23s.

The former Everton man also stated that he felt that after 13 years of his time with the Super Eagles, it was time for him to give his family undivided attention.

“I also had to take into consideration that I had to spend more time with my family in quitting the national team. But the memories will be there with me, and I am thankful for being able to serve my country,” said Yobo.

Yobo is the first Nigerian footballer in the men’s national team to reach the 100-game milestone after an international career that spanned through 2001 to 2014.

The former Nigerian captain was part of the squad that won the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.

Yobo tasks U-23 team on commitment

Ex – Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has tasked players undergoing trials in the national U-23 camp to imbibe the spirit of commitment and hard work in order to make the team as well as excelling in their career.

The former Everton defender who visited the screening venue on Thursday expressed his delight watching the players in action, while insisting there was still room for improvement.

“I was like one of you guys. It was nice coming to watch you play, though this is a training session, Goal quoted Yobo as saying to the players.

“The coach is like a brother, a good friend. When he saw me and asked me to come, I just can’t say no. I started just like you, if not worse.”

“I just want to encourage you. I’m happy with what I’m seeing; there is still room for improvement in your career, just believe in yourself, believe in your coach, and believe in your teammate.

“It’s not a do or die affair, it has to be team work. Even if I knew there was competitions amongst you, you have to keep it friendly, but most importantly you have to believe in God.

“You have great talent; I have seen most of you now. I believe in this team especially in your coach; you guys are privileged.

“This team is privileged to have one of the best African coaches taking care of them, so you have to listen to him. You have to work very hard. If you work hard and you don’t listen to him it won’t work,” he concluded.

  • YOBO DRUMS SUPPORT FOR EAGLES

    YOBO DRUMS SUPPORT FOR EAGLES

Despite Nigeria’s loss to Sudan in an AFCON qualifier on Saturday, former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo believes it is not the end of the road for the national team. In his opinion, the team still has what it takes to hoist Nigeria’s flag in Morocco.

His words: “Sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. I have seen many of such moments in my football career. At such times, I have learnt never to give up. This team is passing through a phase and I know they have what it takes to weather through the storms.”

The 101 capped ex-international, however, opines that the onus is on the players to negotiate their way out of the current situation.

“I have no doubt in the quality of players I left behind in the national team. They have to talk to themselves and find a solution. At times like this, the players’ motivation is key. You know in 2012, we failed to qualify for AFCON, but in 2013, we made up our mind to win the trophy against all odds. Now that the odds are against the team, the players should resolve to go all the way. I have no doubt that Nigeria would still defend the trophy in Morocco. The boys just have to dig deep and find the inner strength”, he said.

But would he opt to come out of retirement to salvage the situation?

His reply: “No, I have done my bit. I have to move on so that the younger ones can develop. The problem in the team is not lack of quality. For one, I know Kenneth Omeruo has what it takes to captain the team and have a long illustrious international career. I won’t be there forever. There must get to a point when I must stop and the younger ones will carry on. I have been talking to the players and telling them of the need not to give up.”

He called on Nigerians to rally round the team.

“This is the time the boys need our support most. Even as they play against Sudan on Wednesday, we have to support them. It is not over yet but this is the best time to show our support and patriotism. We should not abandon them in this time of need”, he added.

Okwuosa: I want to replace Yobo

Nigeria defender James Okwuosa has expressed his desire to be Joseph Yobo’s replacement in the Super Eagles, after the Nigeria captain called it quits with international football following Nigeria’s exit from the World Cup.

Yobo, the most capped Nigerian player at 100 caps, retired from international football immediately after they lost 2-0 to France in the round of 16 stage at the World Cup in Brazil. His retirement could potentially create a vacuum in the Super Eagles and Okwuosa, who’s been on and off in the Eagles, says he wants to be the man that replaces Yobo.

“Well it’ll be a great pleasure to step into his (Yobo’s) shoes in the Super Eagles. I just hope the coaches will look towards my direction when the time comes, as I know that I’m ready for the challenge,” he said.

Okwuosa, who plays for the Chippa United club in the Premier Soccer League in South Africa and has been teammates with Yobo in the Super Eagles, also showered praise on the former Everton of England defender.

“Yobo has done well for Nigeria, and I think everybody knows and appreciate that. To get  100 caps isn’t easy. He is one player I admire, and even given his advancing age, he still remains in top shape.

“It will be a loss to Nigeria that he’s retiring after almost 15years in the national team. I wish him the best as he moves on,” Okwuosa said.

  • Will skipper Yobo fly Nigeria’s flag highin Brazil?

Will skipper Yobo fly Nigeria’s flag highin Brazil?

The 33-year-old Fenerbache defender has returned from  international wilderness after he was shut out by Stephen Keshi soon after the country won a third Africa Cup of Nations last year in South Africa.

This was after Yobo’s place was taken by the youngster Kenneth Omeruo at the AFCON following injury to the more experienced central defender.

Keshi’s snub came at a time when Yobo was also surplus to requirements at Turkish club Fenerbache.

The former Everton star therefore had to move in the winter on loan to English Premier League side Norwich in a desperate bid to save his career.

After a great start to his return to England, Yobo missed the last few weeks of the past season as Norwich were relegated to the English Championship.

He was delighted on his return to the team, vowing to justify his re-instatement.

“I am humbled and I pray that I will justify the confidence reposed in me,” Yobo said.

Yobo’s return has been generally well received.

“I think Yobo’s return to the Eagles is a good one. He was picked by the coach and we must respect that decision. He has been a good player for Nigeria for many years, and so his addition should be a plus to the team in Brazil,” former international skipper Mutiu Adepoju said in support.

He is now just two caps away from hitting a record century of caps for Nigeria.

It is a milestone which he could achieve at the World Cup in Brazil.

But like it was at last year’s AFCON, Yobo will again have to contend with the younger Omeruo and Godfrey Oboabona for a place in the first team.

His personality, experience and calming influence will be very crucial in a very shaky and inexperienced Nigeria defence.

He posted a decent shift against Scotland and was not really exposed against fellow World Cup qualifiers Greece.

But against the USA, in the Eagles final World Cup warm-up game, Yobo will have to take the blame for the two goals scored by Jozy Altidore.

Altidore cashed in Yobo’s sluggishness caused by old age to break an eighth-month goals drought.

His physical conditioning is also a source for concern as he is reportedly on the treatment on a daily basis at the Eagles World Cup training camp.

It would be recalled that he missed the last four games of the season for Norwich City as a result of injury.

Yobo will be fired up to make the most of his return to the Eagles not just because he is aiming for a century of caps but because he, like several other Nigeria stars, is on the shop window in Brazil.

It does not look likely he will stay put at demoted Norwich or return to Fenerbache, meaning he will most likely to heading elsewhere after the World Cup.

It therefore means he has to be at his best to attract the right suitors.

He said he and the rest of the team will take it a game at a time in Brazil.

“We have to take it one game at a time,” he insisted.

“Iran is our first match, I don’t think we know much about them but they deserve respect to have made it to the World Cup. We will do our best to win the game, then think of the next game after that. It’s a game at a time.”

He defended the team’s unconvincing showings in the build-up to the big kick-off.

“We played some friendly games and we did not get the results we expected. But we tried different things, it was experimental,” he argued.

“We were disappointed as well. Hopefully, before the first game, we will be ready. The World Cup is the ultimate.

“We therefore need the support and prayers of the fans, without which we can’t go anywhere. They should support us, we know the task at hand.”

  • Yobo, Onazi preach concentration

    Yobo, Onazi preach concentration

Super Eagles Skipper,Joseph Yobo, who has rediscovered his old self in the team has been speaking, charging up the players ahead of the World Cup tourney in Brazil.

Lazio of Italy midfield gem, Ogenyo Onazi, has also been talking up the commitment of the Super Eagles.

Yobo said he was delighted to have been picked by the technical crew, and is demanding for total concentration from his teammates.

“We have to give our all in the tourney because in future people will ask when you were playing what did you achieve. We have won the Nations Cup, now is the time to aim for the big one.

Onazi, who spoke in a similar vein, said the Super Eagles will be the surprise package at Mundial 2014.

“They say we have not been scoring many goals but these are preparatory games, when we come to the tournament they will see the real Nigerian national team.

The team trained only once in the afternoon on Friday at the stadium where the game against the United States will be played tonight.

  • Yobo may dump Norwich for Qatar

Yobo may dump Norwich for Qatar

Super Eagles’ captain Joseph Yobo will dump Fenerbahce when his loan deal expires with Norwich this summer.

While his priority is to remain with the Canaries, he would wave goodbye to the club if they lose their topflight status at the end of this season.

The 33 – year – old reckons that he can continue playing the round leather game for at least three years and would love to end his career with a team in the Qatar Stars League.

Taking into account friendlies before the World Cup and games at the tournament in Brazil, Joseph Yobo has targeted a century of caps before quitting the National Team.

And should the central defender get to that milestone, he has planned an elaborate testimonial after the World Cup and has invited some of the top footballers in the world, including his old Everton pal Wayne Rooney, to grace the occasion.

  • Nigeria vs Mexico: Yobo to captain Eagles

Nigeria vs Mexico: Yobo to captain Eagles

Joseph Yobo will captain and lead the Super Eagles to the pitch on March 5th as the African champions take on Mexico in an International friendly game in Atlanta, USA.

The last time Yobo featured for the team under Stephen Keshi was in South Africa during the Nations Cup.

Yobo, who made his Eagles debut in 2001, has 95 caps which makes him the most capped player in the history of the national team.

A top source inside the Super Eagles camp told Naijasportscentre.com that the returnee Eagles captain will be honoured to lead the African champions to the pitch.

“Yobo will start against Mexico, the coach has always insisted he is the captain of the team. It is good he is back to the team, he will start the game and lead his mates to the pitch,” the sources revealed.

The Super Eagles face fellow World Cup finalists Mexico on March 5 in Atalanta, Georgia, USA, as they step up their preparations for the World Cup in Brazil in June.

The previous two meetings between both nations ended in draws with the first being in 2007 in Mexico and the last was in Houston, USA in 2013.

  • Norwich will not be relegated – Yobo

Norwich will not be relegated – Yobo

Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has insisted that Norwich City will not be relegated at the end of the 2013/14 Barclays English Premier League season.

The Canaries currently sit just one point above the relegation zone with 12 rounds of games still to come, supersport.com reports.

Norwich is rated 6/4 with bet365 to be relegated at the end of the season, but Yobo takes heart from his successful battle against relegation with former club Everton in the 2003/04 season.

The 33-year old is determined to ensure Norwich stay in the top flight and believes the experience he garnered during his time with the Toffees will put him in a strong position to accomplish that feat.

“It wasn’t great. It was a similar situation in as much if you were not careful you could be relegated but over the years we got better and better at Everton and we ended up a top seven team,” supersport.com quoted Yobo as saying toThe Pink ‘Un.

The Super Eagles skipper recalled that Everton had rode the crest of a wave the previous season and noted that he and his teammates had to dig deep to attain survival in the end.

“I remember that season because we had done well the year before and then things went flat. There was also the season when we qualified for the Champions League and that was difficult as well.

“You look at the club’s situation and of course it is a challenge but I like that extra motivation. I understand the situation Norwich is in. I am excited about it.

“Sometimes you can get comfortable if you are in a team winning every game. You see how many teams are involved at the bottom. If you squeeze out two results you go right to the top end. If you lose you come back towards the bottom,” he said.

Yobo made 220 league appearances for Everton between 2002 and 2012.
