It’s shameful Nollywood stakeholders tolerate controversial blog – Yomi Fabiyi

Popular Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Yomi Fabiyi, has berated the syndicates behind the controversial gossip blog, Gistlover.

Fabiyi, detailing on his Instagram platform, claimed that one of the syndicates of Gistlover is celebrating her birthday today but is unhappy because the “monster she created cannot be linked to her.”

Although Fabiyi did not explicitly mention any names, he hinted at a past friendship with the individuals involved, stating that two of the syndicates enjoyed his unwavering loyalty, sacrifice, and commitment.

Fabiyi also berated Nollywood stakeholders for allowing some individuals to infiltrate the industry, saying that they must be held accountable for such occurrences.

He, however, said that their days are numbered.

He wrote: “What a shame, stakeholders in the movie industry allowed this nonsense of people to find its way into our fold.

“The sad part is that two of these criminals and syndicate have enjoyed my 100% loyalty, sacrifice and commitment. Just because they cannot control me, they can’t stand my guts, natural sense, they turned enemies, adabi ma bi yin. I cannot obey and dance to their evils and criminal ways, hence they both subject me to cyberstalking at any slight opportunity.

“And quite sadly, any loose cannon or criminal who deals with me too see their platform as a tool too and run to these infected humans with lies, fabrications and defamation just to hurt me. All of you, your days are numbered.

“Only ignorants and criminals will propel and encourage any media outfit or blog who specializes in using extreme crime to gather materials, discharge journalism and use criminal methods to publish same. The society suffers when a handful aids such demonic tendencies. They are all social misfits.

“Every person or organisation in any given society must be held accountable. Anyone operating in anonymity or as a ghost can be used as a weapon of oppression and persecution by self or agents of darkness including terrorists.

“But such will flourish for a while because those in positions of authority are either less concerned or feel they cannot be a victim of such horrible demon in the name of blogging.

“That GISTLOVER blog is and will never be public perception if they continue these criminal patterns.

    Yomi Fabiyi.”

  • Artistes convene for ‘Break the Silence’ movement

Some Nigerian artistes have recently gathered to condemn human rights abuse at a summit organised by actor Yomi Fabiyi. Among those in attendance at the summit with the theme, ‘Serial Human Rights Violators; a threat to Nigeria’s peace and development’ are Tope Mark-Odigie, Omo Baba, Kenny Saint Brown, Ara and Ruggedman among others.

One of the volunteers, Nollywood actress Kemi Afolabi, spoke on several social ills and decried human rights violations, brutality and cruelty, particularly from law enforcement officers.

The actress said she understood the efficacy of giving her voice for humanity, charity and the voiceless.

“Yours truly made a decision with top entertainers, renowned human right experts, barristers and so on to stand by the masses,” she said.

“Today, break the silence foundation during our human rights summit, we used the platform to educate, promote human rights protection, and say no to brutality and abuse of all forms. We are sacrificing our energy and resources to see that we educate the society on their rights as citizens.”

FOLLOWING the call-out of Hollywood top dog, Harvey Weinstein, over allegations of sexual harassment, many more entertainers have been called out. Before over 80 women slammed Weinstein for sexual harassment, comedian Bill Cosby had over 60 women come out to allege him of sexual harassment in a career spanning decades.

So far, the move has caused both Cosby and Weinstein their careers.

But this trend seems to be only limited to the western world. In Nollywood, actor Yomi Fabiyi, has also been called out. A lady called Seyi Hunter  is alleging that the actor sexually harassed her, a move which has been causing ripples in the entertainment industry.

According to Hunter, Yomi had invited her to Ikorodu, Lagos where he propositioned sex to her, saying it was normal thing actresses did.

Hunter claimed Fabiyi demanded sex from her before she could be given a movie role.

But Fabiyi got the first bashing prior to Hunter’s allegation. “This stupid guy, I remember my encounter with him about 9yrs ago wen I was so passionate about acting,” wrote a lady, named Ennygold on Instablog9ja.

She said: “I was happy wen I met him as he promised dat he will feature me in a movie dat very day. I was so excited, I called my ppl dat I won’t be coming home o. I dey go location. Only for him to be telling me dat shey I know I can’t sleep in separate room wen we get to d location o. @Ikorodu. Dat we av to sleep together and he will av s*x with me b4 he can feature me at all. He say na normal tin for all d actress o. I was so heart broken. U know was dis guy now did? As I told him I can’t do it, he just dropped me along d express in d middle of d busy road in Ketu. I cried till I reach home. My mama just dey console me like baby.”

Meanwhile, Hunter, who recently referred to herself as a ‘sex goddess’ in an interview however, said she was shocked at Fabiyi’s act as she trusted him, saying, “he had always advised me and was the only Nollywood Person at my office opening.”

Responding to the accusation, Yomi Fabiyi described the accusation as false and cheap  ‘blackmail.’

“It is not in my habit to warn or be on the wrong side of the media as I believe we are in here for one another with high respect but please if you are not part of the this ‘pull him down by all means syndrome’ campaign going on, I advise you avoid letting  this cheap “BLACKMAIL” seat on your portal,” Fabiyi wrote.

“To my friends, fans and close allies that know me so well, one thing is crystal clear, I will not walk anybody out of my car in a manner that terrible lies has pointed. So many lies and discrepancies in the story. I do not know who is behind this but I am sure they are not someone with better lives and they shall meet their waterloo very shortly.  I will see this to a logical end and ensure criminals like this are not allowed to spoil the cyber space or hoodwinked people into falling in line with their jaundice or criminality. In the interim, let us relax and see how things pans out. I am doing fine and please WATCH my latest movie AGBEDE MEJI via Yoruba plus on YouTube. “

While many are of the view that these accusations may not go beyond the cyber space, as evidence is usually a rarity, Hunter said she has a recorded phone conversation of Fabiyi demanding sex from her.

Daring her to come out with a proof,  Fabiyi who disclosed that he wants to ‘clear’ his name said he has already reported the matter to the police and challenged Seyi Hunter to bring out the recording where he asked her for sex.

”Trust me fans, friends and colleagues, I am not a saint nor trying to look perfect but blackmail, cyber-attacks and defamation of character are both serious criminal and civil matters that must not be taken with levity and on this I wish to clear my name. It is not the words of bullies or enemies that hurts, it’s the silence of friends. I thank my fans & good friends for your support.”

With the banters going on, social media followers took it to another dimension by asking male filmmakers to talk about female actresses who have harassed male producers sexually.

“Also, I think male producers and directors should speak out too about actresses who harass them with naked pictures to get roles,” one said.

“In Nollywood, it is also an open secret that some desperate actresses in the Asaba axis of Delta State in a bid to land movie roles, ‘sexually harass’ male producers and directors,” said another.

    Yemi Solade too

ALSO, being accused of sexual harassment on social media is actor Yemi Solade by a woman simply identified as Lawal Dolapo who said she was an aspiring actress.

“Okay, I saw a post about Yomi Fabiyi on @instablog9ja and I felt like talking about mine,” wrote Dolapo.

“Years ago when the drive to become an actor was high, I believed in myself so much, I was going for auditions, getting call backs and anytime I was called on to set, something about school will set in.

“I saw this man’s page, I mean the almighty @yemi_solade and I noticed he had his BBM pin on his bio, as a hustling girl, I sent him request, he accepted, it felt like heaven on earth, I felt like my prayers were about to be answered.

“I sent him accolades first, you know na, next thing I said, sir, I’ll like to be featured in movies, he said that’s not a problem, I should meet him up somewhere around Ajah. Cross-checking the address, it was a guest house, I said, sir, you are like my father(I was about 20yrs old then), uncle said and I quote “I know my children, and you are not one. If you want a role, then come”

“Emi Arike, if I’ll sleep with a man for something, then it’s not going to be something I can get by myself.

The lady said she was shocked at Solade’s response. But the veteran actor dismissed the allegation and said the lady was paid by bloggers.

“I congratulate the new celebrity on the bloc! Her intentions would be her undoing. The Cocoyam leaves had had water within before the rainy season. I wish her all the best. I thank you guys who know one or two things about how we work. I live on Gowon Estate, Egbeda….

“Work all over the world and we are camped in hotels for the duration of work….. I need not dwell on this nuisance value gist. This is not how Funke Akindele – Bello, Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade – Ekeinde and their likes got into public consciousness…

“My dear sisters did the needful by training in film schools, acquiring film education and today the world celebrates them. I wish this Dolapo Lawal success in her new status… Welcome to the world of celebs… I hope the bloggers paid her handsomely.

“You will be the first to run her sadness when she lands in court.”

Giving support to the actor, Foluke Daramola has denounced Solade’s accuser.

“You’re very silly for this,” Daramola wrote.

“What do you want to achieve with this? What evidence do you have? Stupid idiot.”

Others however criticised Daramola, saying it was difficult to get evidence for incidents of sexual harassments.

“The closest to evidence against these men is the ‘similarity’ in stories of the ‘numbers’ of women who accuse them,” said an industry stakeholder.

“Asking that the ladies present ‘hard evidence’ – knowing it’s largely not possible – may be construed as a tad insensitive. It’s better to say there are two sides to the story and we’ve only heard one. Yomi Fabiyi and whoever else accused are innocent till proven guilty.”

Other actresses have also said this is a common trend in Nollywood, said an actress who also said Solade also grabbed her nipple in 2004 “in the middle of a serious formal conversation.” The actress said that many of her female colleagues just keep quiet about the goings-on.

“Some of us don’t just enjoy the limelight (with) stories like that trailing us, so we keep quiet and watch the next girl go through such emotional trauma,” she said.

“I’m guilty of it. So many women are guilty of it. The nation is guilty of it.”

Another actress also accused a director with Africa Magic of demanding sex from her before eventually refusing to work with her totally because she refused to sleep with him. She also said sexual harassment is rampant.

“How many will I say?” She asked.

“This harassment thing is everywhere! Bank industry, movie industry, music industry, all other industries/sectors.”

Fabiyi said he has already tabled the matter with the police. As it stands now, will accusations and counteraccusations make clear any reason for prosecution? If there is no evidence, will the words of the accusers be enough to enforce any reprimand? Will the recorded phone conversation by Hunter be admissible?

And as sexual harassment is being reined in Hollywood, will that be the case in Nollywood? In the Hollywood example, it was the sheer number of women alleging sexual harassment that ‘convicted’ Cosby, Weinstein and Spacey. And while women rights activists in Nigeria, especially the female entertainers, have been vocal about battery, at what point will they wade into these allegations and counter-allegations of sexual harassment?

In all these, only time will tell.

Instagram users come for Yomi Fabiyi

Actor Yomi Fabiyi has being tagged the harbinger of bad news, by some of his followers on Instagram.

The actor broke the news of the demise of Ayo, the first daughter of his fellow actress, Remi Oshodi when he wrote; “Rest in peace Ayo. May God grant your mum @therealremisurutu the strength to bear this loss. She did all she can, omg! Aunty Remi, please take heart.

Seeing your lifeless body now caused me more pain and it is because I value the friendship we shared. Journey well. In serious pain now.

Popular actress Remi Oshodi, known as Remi Surutu, was said to have lost her daughter to the cold hands of death Sunday.

To some observers, posts from the actor are becoming worrisome as they feel most of them are usually related to the passing away of his colleagues. Some of his followers have taken to the actor’s Instagram page asking him to take down the picture of the deceased as well as the post.

It will be recalled that the actor was one of the first people to announce the passing away of Moji Olaiya, and acted as the head of the burial planning committee.

Among so many other comments, a fan by the name adu4 wrote, “@yomifabiyi why are you always so quick to post RIP on your page why? I’m sure u didn’t serve any purpose in the girl’s life when she was alive. Now she’s gone so quick to post rip like you always wait for someone to die ni? Using that to get popular Moji Olaiya too, you were the head of the burial committee.”

Moji Olaiya: Criticisms trail the sale of N1,500 T-shirt for burial

A torrent of criticisms has trailed the plan to sell commemorative T-shirts at N1,500 each to mark the burial of Nollywood actress Moji Olaiya.

The burial committee announced the T-shirt offer on Friday while unveiling the burial plans for the actress, who died on 17 May, three months after delivering a baby girl in Canada. She died of cardiac arrest. She was 42 years old.

Yomi Fabiyi, the Publicity Secretary said people interested in participating in the burial, which starts on Tuesday, 6 June, can buy the T-shirts.

This, however, contradicted the message in the obituary published by the committee, asking mourners and sympathisers to wear corporate black outfits at the two-day event, culminating in the interment at ikoyi Cemetery..

The corpse from Canada would arrive in Lagos on 6 June, the same day that a service of songs is billed to take place at 4pm at the Blue Roof of LTV 8 in Ikeja Lagos.

Lying-in-state and interment would follow on Wednesday 7 June at Ebony Vault, Ikoyi Cemetery.

Of all the plans, the T-shirt sale has been the only one stirring controversy.

Most critics were of the opinion that since she died at a very young age, it was wrong printing T-shirts, as if her death amounted to a celebration.

A civil servant, Mrs Damilola Ahmed said that the burial committee has turned the 42 year-old lady’s painful death into money making venture.

“What kind of stupid T-shirt are they selling and for what. They are laughing, not crying for her. And they announced it to the public,’’ she said.

Mrs Iyabo Olaitan, a businesswoman said that instead of the burial planners to make the ceremony low key, the are selling T-shirts.

“For what?, she said. They should rather beg God to spare their own lives”.

“They are bad people, anybody that suggested that is not a good person. She is still very young for that”, she added.

A student of Lagos state University, Mr Nwosu Igbo, asked: “How can a young woman’s death after child birth make people talk about selling of T-shirt. They are doing business with her. Are they happy about the death? What for? Na wao for Nigerians!”

“Will people still be wearing the T-short after her burial? How will the family react seeing the shirt after that?.

“Her death was bad enough; the T-Shirt is not necessary. Her parents are still alive. They will always remember her,’’ he said.

Mr Abiodun Bello, a civil servant, said that “when they were asked to contribute money to bring her corpse back to Nigeria from Canada they did not.

“Now they have money to do T shirt. This is bad. They should have reflected deeply before announcing it.

“My people so much like uniform. This cannot happen in every event. This one is a sad one. I know some of them will like it, but of what use,’’ he said.

Taiwo Banky, a member of the burial committee appeared to distance the committee from the T-shirt idea. She told NAN: “Is this why you are calling me? The idea is from her childhood friend, it is not from me”.

Moji Olaiya was the daughter of the legendary Nigerian highlife maestro, Victor Olaiya. She converted to Islam in 2014.

Her acting career started with a feature movie “Sunmibare’’ which was produced by Dimeji Ijaduade; before she took a role in Wale Adenuga productions, Super Story series, “No Pain, No Gain’’.

She starred in many Nollywood and Yoruba movies, among which were “Sade Blade-2005’’, “Nkan Adun-2008’’; “Omo Iya Meta Leyi-2009’’; “Agunbaniro’’ and others.

She produced a film “Iya Okomi’’ which premiered in 2016.

She won some awards during her career. She was nominated for the Reel Awards for Best Supporting Actress of the Year- 2003. She won the City People Entertainment Award, as well.

In 2015 the FCT Nigerian Police Force honoured her as a role model for Nigerian youths.

  • Moji Olaiya: Only actress’ family can reveal donations, burial plans -Committee

Moji Olaiya: Only actress’ family can reveal donations, burial plans -Committee

A member of the burial committee for late actress Moji Olaiya, Foluke Daramola-Salako, has said that details of the funeral service for the star actress will be made public, only by her family.

Speaking with The Nation, Daramola-Salako said the funeral details would come out after her body returns to Nigeria.

It had been a dilemma for the family of the deceased, on how to convey the body of the actress to Nigeria.

Succor however came their way on Monday, when the committee approached All Progressive Congress stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who rose to the occasion.

The committee would not disclose how much was given to them by Tinubu, saying the family reserves the right to make the donation public if they choose.

When contacted, a source in Tinubu’s camp also declined to give the exact amount, saying that the former Lagos State governor did not expect the committee to make his donation public in the first place.

“All I can tell you is that members of the burial committee for the late actress approached the APC stalwart, saying they needed help to bring the body of the actress home, especially on the request of the deceased 18-year-old daughter, and he gave them some money yesterday (Monday),” said the source.

Reports say the committee had estimated that about USD17, 000 would be required to bring the corpse and the baby to Nigeria, being the amount presented, albeit unofficially, to the Ekiti State governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, few days ago.

The late Olaiya was delivered of a baby girl on March 17 in Ontario, Canada, after which she died from a heart attack on May 18, at the age of 42.

“Moji is an ambassador of Nigeria,” said Daramola-Salako who debunked the rumour that the actress’ corpse was released a long time ago, stating that it was only released on May 20, 2017.

Publicity Secretary of the burial committee, Yomi Fabiyi, in a separate chat, corroborated Daramola-Salako on the date the corpse was released.

“It was just two or three days ago that the government of Canada released the body for burial,” Fabiyi said over the phone. “It had been going through autopsy.”

On how long it would take to commence the funeral rites, he said: “Like I am told, to get the required papers, tickets for the baby and the two people accompanying the corps, and all the necessary Customs and Immigration papers is going to take like one week,” he said, adding that, “I don’t want to speculate because it also depends on the availability of flight and how speedy the process can be.”

Daramola-Salako disclosed that the remains of the actress will be accompanied by Yinka Farinde, a film promoter in Canada, while the baby will also be arriving with a personal nurse.

She said the committee is still open to more voluntary donations from people, as the funds being solicited is also meant to support the welfare of the late actress’ family.

“The committee, on behalf of the other colleagues looked into giving the children some kind of support where possible, and to support the aged mother if we have excess funds. So, it’s a moral position. We can’t bury her and go like that.”

On the risk of the deceased’s baby losing her Canadian citizenship if returned suddenly, they said arrangements will be made with the actress’ family to take care of that.
