    We are not guilty, Yoruba Nation agitators tell court

    Members of the Oodua Republic under the aegis of Yoruba Nation Agitators who are currently facing trial before an Oyo State High Court have pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them in court yesterday.

    The case with suit number I/51c/2024 involves the State Versus Adeyemo Peter & 26 others. It held at the Fiat Court 3, Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan presided over by Justice K. B Olawoyin.

    The defendants (1- 27) facing trial include: Adeyemo Peter, Adeyemo Joseph, Amos Oluwaseyi Ogundeji, Ayanwale Rofiat, Olalere Mathew and Ismaila Malomo Peter.

    Also,  Fatoki Anthony, Murittala Abefe, Ismaila Adepoju, Fatunmbi Wasiu, Isaac Friday, Ayanwale Saburi, Adeola Elegbede, Ademola Adeniyi, Ogundeji Alabi, Ojo Olufemi, Ajani Ezekiel, Adejumo Lateef and Ayoola David.

    Others are Adesokan Hameed, Adesokan Hameed, Abiona Esther, Omoyajowo Funsho, Tola Olufemi, Oritola Alabi, Kayode Fakeye and Taiwo Titilayo.

    The suspect were arraigned on five count charge bothering on conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, unlawful assembly, treasonable felony and treason.

    The case is been prosecuted by the state government team led by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mr S. O Adeoye, O. R. Yussuf (Deputy DPP), O. S Tella (DDPP), Mrs G.O Sanni (Deputy Director, Legal Drafting and Ministerial Counseling) and S.A Osuolale (Senior State Counsel).

    While Mr S.A Sanni appeared for the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 13th defendants, Mr Adebola Ogungbe appeared for 3rd, 4th, 22th and 22nd defendants, Yomi Ogunlola represented 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 25th and 26th defendants and Mr O. A Adeleke appeared for 23rd defendant.

    The state prosecutor told the court of its application before it. The state in the application is seeking to: remove the name of the late defendant from the list, change a name that was listed twice and also include a name that wasn’t listed.

    The Nation reports that, Adejumo Lateef who is the 18th defendant in the suit has died in custody, according to officials of Nigeria Correctional Services NCS) who told the court at the last hearing.

    The application was not opposed by any of the defendants’ counsels. The prosecution was moved in terms and the application was granted by the court.

    One of the defence counsels, Yomi Ogunlola, also told the court of an application challenging the jurisdiction of the court to entertain some counts of the criminal charges, noting that the Oyo state government needs the Fiat of the Attorney General of the Federation to prosecute those counts, especially the one that deals with treason.

    A professional group, Omituntun Initiative in the Diaspora (OID), has expressed its solidarity with the Oyo State Government and unequivocally condemned the heinous invasion of the Governor’s office and the State House of Assembly by the Yoruba Nation agitators recently.

    According to a release signed by the group’s spokesperson, Ayotomiwa Adebayo, the agitators’ invasion of the Oyo State Government is an attack on democracy that directly undermines good governance and poses a threat to peace and security.

    The statement said: ”The methods and practices of agitators, which cannot be justified under any circumstances, regardless of their motivation, are a treasonable felony capable of causing chaos in the state.

     The group declares full solidarity with the Oyo Government and supports all measures taken to bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to trial for acts of terrorism to preserve its security and stability. All security agencies are enjoined to work in harmony to prevent future attacks in the state.

    “We urged the good people of Oyo State to remain together, be vigilant, and defend the democratic institutions that underpin our democracy principles and fundamental values across the country,” the statement added.

    Coalition condemns invasion of Oyo Secretariat by Yoruba Nation agitators

    The Coalition of Pro-Democracy Groups for A Better Nigeria, has condemned the invasion of the Oyo Secretariat by Yoruba Nation agitators.

    A statement by the coalition’s National Coordinator, Comr. Awa Bamiji, called for a thorough investigation of the entire episode to unravel the mystery behind it.

    It also sought the strengthening of the security network around state and federal government secretariat and government houses.

    The coalition praised the combined team of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police, Civil Defence and Amotekun Corps who engaged the armed agitators in exchange before they were incapacitated.

    The statement reads:”We call on all patriotic citizens and residents of Nigeria to be law abiding and keep faith with democracy in this challenging period.

    It’s on record that this group frowned at and publicly condemned the Yoruba Nation advocacy since its emergence because we so much believe in the sovereignty of Nigeria, especially now that various bold steps are being taken daily by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to steer the ship of this nation towards economic recovery.”

    BREAKING: Oyo demolishes Yoruba Nation agitators’ building

    Oyo State Government has pulled down the building where the Yoruba Nation agitators under the leadership of Modupe Onitiri-Abiola are operating from in Ibadan, the state capital.

    The building on Toye Oyesola Street in the Ibadan South West Local Government Area was demolished on Wednesday evening.

    Ondo vows to punish Yoruba nation agitators

    Ondo state government said that severe punishment awaits anybody who foments trouble in the state under the guise of agitating for Yoruba nation.

    It said it would go against anybody who worked against the Nigeria state.

    The special adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Information, Hon Olugbenga Omole, who spoke in a telephone chat, said the state was in support of the federal government.

    He said: “We will arrest them here in Ondo. We will not support anybody that is against the federal government.”
