  • IYD: Sokoto youth leaders seek support, root for Tambuwal

    A coalition of youth organs under the auspices of  ‘Sokoto state Youth and Students Leaders For Tambuwal’ joined to celebrate youths day, calling for a sustained efforts to allow their active participation in the process of national development.

    The coalition which seem to be rooting for ‎Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal said” If we back out from Tambuwal, our generation has failed.

    Speaking on Monday in Sokoto at a symposium in commemoration of the 2018 International Youth Day‎ organised by the coalition, a youth Ambassador, Comrade Nafiu Bello Basakkwace said youths deserve to be given their rightful place in the activities of governance and general developmment.

    He noted with joy the signing recently of the ‘Not too young to run’ Bill by President Muhammadu Buhari.

    The theme of this year’s event is” Safe Spaces for the Youth”

    According to Basakkwace” we constitute the most vibrant segment and nucleus that can drive the nation on the path of prosperity.

    ” We are closing ranks to sustain the drive by creating space for our even and collective participation.”

    The youth Ambassador who also described Governor Tambuwal as the needed choice of a leader‎, said they were ready to extend to him their unflinching support, noting that he was capable of delivering results.

    ” We will ensure he realises his passionate ambition by supporting him ‎to the destination of success”, he assured.

    He however, frowned at a recent comment against Governor Tambuwal, describing him as “too in a hurry.”

    He said” How can you say that a 52 year old is too in a hurry? In developed worlds, we have presidents at 39yrs and below 50‎yrs.”, he wondered.

    ‎Delivering a lecture, Comrade Sanusi Yakubu who recalled that the day which was set aside by the United Nations and first celebrated in year 2000, was initiated to focus on 15 fundamental issues relating to socio-economic, education, health, drugs, among other related issues bordering on youths development and survival.

    According to Yakubu, youths involvement in state affairs would encourage positive changes in development process.

    ” ‎They are themselves means and solution to problems if given the flow of space to actively participate in nation building”, he pointed out.

    Comrade Yakubu further observed that there has been consistent clamour globally for youth to enjoy opportunities inorder to demonstrate their abilities for positive change.

    ” Is therefore, of enormous importance to allow youths drive the desired positive change‎ for the benefit of the country.

    He charged youths to take up the purposeful challenge of changing the narrative while urging government to map out policies to encourage collaboration that would promote youth aspirations to leadership positions.

    While noting that government was a critical player and stakeholder in developing youths, Yakubu expressed concern over the attitude of most youth on social media platforms.

    He cautioned youths on how they use social media platforms negatively by promoting and provoking hate and derogatory posts.

    ” You have to be alive to your responsibility as leaders of tomorrow. Be careful and always conscious of messages and comments you pass across on social media platforms‎.

    ” I want to draw your attention to the dangers associated with hate and derogatory speeches and comments either by direct post or sharing others post that are sensitive to negative reactions”, he specifically mentioned.

    In his remarks, Director General, Media and Publicity to the Government of Sokoto state, Alhaji Abu Shekara urged the youths to rejuvenate and emancipate themselves ‎from all kinds of negative vice and own up to responsibilities that defined them as symbol of feature leaders.

    According to Shekara who was represented by Director Mobilisation and Enlightenment, Sokoto state Media Corporation, Nura Ibrahim Dogon Daji, such was the only panacea to advancing their desire for participation in development process.

    He further hailed Governor Tambuwal for ably dislodging as well wiping out all forms of ‘area ‎boys’ activities in the state especially within the state metropolis with a view to giving new sense of order to the youths who were dominant in the negative life.

  • Clean-up: Youth leaders demand indigenous project manager

    A coalition of Ogoni youth leaders has demanded the appointment of an indigenous project manager for the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme’s recommendation on Ogoni clean-up.

    The leaders, under the aegis of the Ogoni Joint Youth Leadership Council, said this was necessary since the Federal Government appointed leadership of other structures outside Ogoni.

    A statement by the Chairman of the leadership council, Mr. Friday Ngbihoro and Public Relations Officer, Mr. Vincent Gbosi, said the Ogoni had in abundance environment experts with the capacity to work as project managers.

    The statement, issued at Nonwa in Tai Local Government of Rivers State, said the appointment of an Ogoni would alleviate the people’s plight and ensure compliance with global best practices, being a victim.

    It said: “We demand the appointment of an indigenous project manager, having appointed leadership of the other structures outside Ogoni.

    “We believe that the Ogoni have in abundance world-class environmentalists and project managers, whose appointment will alleviate the plight of the people and ensure compliance with global best practices, being victims.

    “We demand equal spread in these appointments across the four local governments that make up Ogoni, to give all parts a sense of belonging.”

    The youth leaders sought the action of the Federal Government and its security agencies against insecurity, particularly in Ogoniland.

    They said this could affect the implementation of the project and the legislative rerun.

    The leaders said politically-related murder, arson, communal and cult- related clashes remained a threat to peace and development of the Ogoniland.

    They hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for actualising his campaign promise to the Ogoni and by extension the Niger Delta.

    The leaders praised the inauguration of the Governing Council and the Board of Trustees for the clean-up of Ogoniland.

    They restated their belief in the Buhari administration and confidence in the Minister of Environment, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, to achieve the clean-up of the Ogoniland and other areas in the Niger Delta.

    The leaders advised youths to be peaceful, united and supportive of development-oriented leaders from Ogoni and the state.

    The Bayelsa Youth Leaders’ Forum (BYLF) has endorsed Governor Seriake Dickson for a second term.

    Speaking with reporters in Yenagoa, the group said Dickson deserved a second term based on his performance, including the construction of the Yenagoa flyover, airport project, the building of roads and award of scholarships to students.

    The forum’s Chairman, Mr. Oborku Oforji, and Secretary Okosikeme Ayibakuro said the group was formed to canvass for Dickson’s re-election.

    Oforji said: “We are moving into local government areas and wards to drum up support for the governor. He needs to come back to ensure more development.”

    He debunked rumours that the group was being funded by an aide of the governor, saying the Dickson administration has impacted positively on the people.

    Missing $20bn: Youth leaders to protest against NNPC boss in Abuja

    Following the revelation of a fresh 20 billion dollars unremitted funds by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, by the Central Bank Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the  Nigerian Youth Leaders is set to march on the National Assembly to call for the immediate sack of the NNPC Group Managing Director, Mr Andrew  Yakubu.

    The Youth Leaders condemned the atitude of the operators of the NNPC in the remittance of petroleum proceeds to the Federation Account.

    Rising from an emergency meeting in Abuja, the group led by its National Coordinator, Comrade Solomon Chucks, said with over 90 per cent of Nigerian revenue coming from the sale of crude, the NNPC has no moral impetus to play hide and seek with the nation’s revenue.

    They said it will be a total disservice to Nigerians to dismiss the monumental disclosure by the CBN governor.

    While commending President Goodluck Jonathan for accepting the resignation of his Chief of Staff, Mike Ogiadomhe, for related misconduct, the youth leaders gave the GMD a seven days ultimatum to resign his appointment or face mass protect against him by various youth groups.

    “We will deploy all available means within the ambit of the law to stage a rally to call for the removal of the GMD”

    “While we remain law-abiding youths, we are, however, committed to champion the struggle for the protection of the fundamental rights of the innocent citizens of Nigeria”the group said

    The Youth Leaders, while urging President Goodluck Jonathan not to renege on the fight against corruption as it remains the bane of national corruption, advised him to put the GMD on a compulsory leave, while a panel is set up to investigate the allegation.
