  • Dear Fellow Youth,

    Dear Fellow Youth,

I am aware of the challenges we all are facing, and I understand the frustration many of us feel. However, I urge you not to participate in the proposed protest on August 1st. We must not allow ourselves to be manipulated, nor should we engage in actions that could undermine our nation’s progress.

President Tinubu, though newly in office, has already made significant strides to address the pressing issues affecting our communities. He is working tirelessly with a team of dedicated professionals to improve our country. Criticizing the government at this early stage is premature. We must not jeopardize the positive developments and potential benefits that are on the horizon.

The lessons from the End SARS protest are clear: such movements can be hijacked by those with ulterior motives, leading to chaos and setbacks. Instead of protesting, I encourage you to channel your energy into constructive engagement with the government. There are numerous federal and state schemes available, and with the new scope of local government autonomy, even more opportunities will arise. Engage with your district representatives to learn about these initiatives and how you can benefit from them.

As someone close to people in government, I assure you that we will strive to involve youths in all government initiatives. Let us remain calm, work collaboratively with the government, and resist being used by those who do not have our best interests at heart.

Together, let us support President Tinubu and Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State in their efforts to build a better Nigeria.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, God bless Kwara State, and God bless Oyun Local Government.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has warned that Nigerian children are at risk of losing their identity if necessary steps are not taken to make amends.

She gave the warning at an event tagged ‘Celebrating the Nigerian Woman’ organized as part of activities to mark President Bola Tinubu’s  first year in office.

The event was specially put together to recognize the women that have made significant contributions in their various spheres of life, communities and in the nation at large.

First Lady Tinubu emphasised the importance of women as the foundation of the home and society, stressing the need to continue nurturing children and instilling good morals while preserving cultural and traditional values.

In a statement issued by her Senior Special Assistant, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady said “gathered here today are women from across all sectors of our society, who have individually and collectively contributed to the development of our great nation. Every woman, irrespective of age, is a mother, a nurturer, a builder and the foundation upon which our families, communities and institutions thrive”.

She expressed concern that without intervention, the current state of the society could lead to children losing their identity.

The First Lady urged women to become unifying forces in their homes and communities to drive greater prosperity for the nation. She encouraged drawing inspiration from the legacies of pioneering women who have paved the way.

“When mothers stand with you, the house is in order. Looking ahead, we must endeavour to become the unifying force in our homes and our communities, to bring about greater prosperity for our nation.

“Let us continue to draw from the lessons of the pioneers who have paved the way and build on the legacies they have left behind”, she said.

She urged everyone to contribute their quota and continue praying for President Bola Tinubu and the nation until Nigeria reaches the promised land, which she referred to as “Eldorado.”

“To all our mothers here today, and to those who have supported and keep touching our lives in countless ways, I say thank you. Thank you for your love, strength, and unending sacrifices”, she said.

Wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, described Senator Oluremi Tinubu as an embodiment of experience, having served as First Lady of Lagos State for eight years, Senator of the Federal Republic for eight years and now the First Lady of the country.

Wife of former Head of State, Mrs Victoria Gowon, in her remarks, stressed that until women unite, Nigeria will go nowhere. She said if women unite and begin to mentor others, Nigeria will one day produce a female president.

“I like to say something, the First Lady of Federal Republic of Nigeria has shown us the way to take people as friends, as partners to move the women of Nigeria forward. To be seen as mothers, as helpers.

“Until we as women unite, we are not going anywhere. We have to unite. We have to remove our differences, it doesn’t matter where you come from or it doesn’t matter who you love, you are a woman, you are a mother.

“At this juncture, I call on women of Nigeria to support Mrs. Tinubu in the office she is today. She has shown that she can help women of Nigeria, she can support the children of Nigeria. And together we will be strong, together, one day, we will find amongst us, one of us that can be the leader of this country”, she said.

Fed Govt begins review of youth development policy

The federal government has commenced the process of a thorough review of the youth development policy in the country with key stakeholders.

Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, disclosed this on Friday, May 17, during an interactive session with critical stakeholders from the 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja.

The meeting, themed ‘Leadership and Public Policy: Grassroots Mobilisers – The Challenges and Remedies through Remodeling’, highlighted the government’s commitment to youth development.

The minister emphasised the need for input from all critical stakeholders before presenting the draft of the Youth Development Policy to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval.

According to the minister, the government aims to involve all relevant parties in the process of establishing sustainable solutions to the prevalent issues, particularly by ensuring accessible financial resources for the younger generation, meaningful inclusion of youth, and addressing the requirements of individuals with special needs.

Bio – Ibrahim said: “We cannot progress without a comprehensive Youth Development Policy. Upon our arrival, we encountered an outdated policy, prompting us to devise programs and initiatives that actively engage young people and allow them to influence policy decisions.

“The current administration is committed to fostering trust between young people and the government. To achieve this synergy, we must wholeheartedly be committed to delivering on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiatives as promised.

The senior special assistant to the president of People with Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Abbah Isah, said that 40 percent of Nigerian youths living with disabilities face significant hardships, including limited access to basic social amenities, economic instability leading to financial hardship, and inadequate healthcare services.

He also highlighted other challenges that this demographic encounters on a daily basis.

Isah expressed his appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering dedication to ensure that all segments of society received the necessary support and attention within the framework of his administration’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.

Unemployment: Fed govt to revamp 42 youth centres

The federal government said it is in the process of rehabilitating and revamping 42 youth centres to boost youth empowerment.

Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, said this when representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) visited the ministry at the weekend.

He urged the UNDP representatives to support the ministry in implementing the strategic plans of the government to provide young Nigerians with the necessary skills, mentorship, a conducive environment and access to resources that will empower them to become active contributors to the country’s economy.

While shedding light on the strategic areas of the ministry’s agenda, Bio-Ibrahim said: “Our strategic ambition is to transform and reposition the Nigerian youth as catalysts for economic development. Young people must be an integral part of this process. We have other sub-ambitions, the first being a reduction in the youth unemployment rate, followed by an increase in youth possessing skills that are in line with global demand, and an increase in youth participation in social and economic development.

“Our core tactical initiatives are focused on four pillars: Governance, Jobs and Skills Innovation, Culture and Behavioral Change, and Human Capital Development. These pillars aim to guide policy advocacy and development, improve coordination across stakeholders, and provide multi-agency youth programs and resources.”

The minister said the government was determined to establish communication governance frameworks, implement youth-embedded public and private sector mentorship programs, create multi-sector job off-taker platforms for youth employment, enhance NYSC reforms and establish youth villages and innovation centres.

She also disclosed plans to revitalise the national youth investment fund, launch the Young Leaders Institute, and implement social, behavioural, and cultural change programs aimed at tackling youth-related issues such as climate change, gender, mental health, drug, and substance abuse.

According to the minister, the initiative included the provision of access to business literacy, financial management, and entrepreneurship training to meet the global market demand.

“As part of efforts to actualise these initiatives, she disclosed plans to create more professional departments in the ministry

“We are currently seeking approval to create additional professional departments. However, the one that is particularly important to us is the Youth Well-being Department. It is crucial to create such a department because when young people have good mental health, they are more likely to be productive. Therefore, our goal is to prioritise the well-being of our youth.

“We are seeking approval to restart the Nigeria Investment Fund. If approved, it will enable us to employ the cluster approach with a view to enhancing youth development and empowerment. This, in turn, will lead to tangible sustainable impact on a great scale, and benefit our economy.”

Bio-Ibrahim noted that one of the ministry’s main goals was to increase the representation of young people in politics and governance at all levels by seeking the Council’s approval for a 30 percent youth quota.

The Representative of UNDP, Elsie Attafuah assured the minister that the UN agency would provide support for the initiatives of the government.

She lamented that the African continent was facing a daunting challenge as young people continued to struggle to find jobs, leading to frustration and the growing trend of going abroad to seek jobs.

She pointed out that it was high time to delve deeper into the root causes of the problem and take a more realistic approach towards youth empowerment and job creation.

She said: “We must create more opportunities and find jobs for our people, as merely providing them with starter packs or training won’t solve it. We need to identify the obstacles that hold us back and tackle them head-on. Let’s work together to eradicate this problem and create a brighter future for our youth and our continent.

“In the four pillars, we will encourage everyone to think outside the box and explore innovative practices that align with the ever-changing world.”

She expressed the readiness of the UNDP to collaborate with the ministry in the priority areas outlined by the minister.

She stressed the importance of ensuring that the design, implementation, and operationalization of the initiatives outlined by the minister are done properly.

Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Donuma Ahmed expressed hope that the meeting would bring positive change in the lives of young Nigerians.

The coordinator of Youth Mobilisation and Engagement at Development Action & Campaign for Africa (DACA), Damilola Ogunbowale, has said Nigeria needs a coordinated action on climate change mitigation and adaptation as the country battles extreme weather events.

Speaking at a sustainable economy forum organised by DACA, Ogunbowale said green economy will accelerate the GDP of Nigeria, noting that efforts geared towards building cleaner and more secure energy systems would be beneficial to Nigeria.

According to Ogunbowale: “Climate change and its effects threaten the physical, psychological, and economic well-being of our nation. It disproportionately impacts vulnerable communities, including youth, and it is poised to unleash dangerous harm on the future of our economy.”

The youth climate activist commended President Bola Tinubu on his investment drive but urged the President to formally declare a climate emergency and unleash his executive powers to cut back on fossil fuel projects and dramatically accelerate Nigeria buildout of clean energy.

“This severe climate condition is causing devastating impacts on communities and agricultural and natural ecosystems, and we need to act now to protect lives and livelihoods,” she says. “Food crisis will be a big issue in the future as communities experience crop failure, low food production, hunger, and extreme poverty, if Nigeria fails to act,” he said.

A legislator, Hon. Kalejaiye Paul has tasked Nigerian youths to dedicate themselves towards promoting their inborn talents and avoid the bandwagon of japa syndrome.

The lawmaker, who represents Ajeromi Ifelodun federal constitency in the Geen Chamber of the National Assembly, gave the charge on Sunday, December 24, in Lagos during a musical concert and talent hunt he hosted in his constituency.

The event, which was organised by the lawmaker, featured competitions from 200 church choirs in Ajeromi-Ifelodun with six churches in the final stage.

He said: “What I try to do is to encourage a healthy competition among the choristers.

“We had over 200 entries from various churches and we had the preliminary process. we had elimination, quarter final and semi final.

“Today we are going to present six finalist out of whom we will have the first, second and third.

“The first price goes away with one million naira, the second price goes with N750,000 and the third goes with N500,000. Other prices are N250,000, N150,000.”

He, however, lamented the japa syndrome in the country.

The lawmaker stated: “Unfortunately, japa syndrome has become a phenomenal in recent time. People japa because they believe there are greener pastures and that Nigeria offers nothing.

“But I want to encourage them to say that Nigeria offers the best.

“Even the japa we are talking about, you see graduate go there to wash coffins, security jobs and other.

“These are menial jobs they don’t want to do here but when they get abroad they do just any job to make money.

“While I want to discourage the japa syndrome, my appeal is for us to engage in programmes like this where people that are talented can be spotted and encouraged. I also intend to pursuit the skill accusation.”

Civil society groups, widow seek justice for slain youth leader

    • By Halimah Balogun

A coalition of civil society groups has demanded justice for Sheriff Salami, a youth leader in Ojomu Community, Lagos State, who was murdered on April 18 in Ogombo.

They called on the Lagos State government and the Inspector-General of Police (IG), Kayode Egbetokun, to compel the Lagos State Police Command to bring the perpetrators to book.

The groups yesterday staged a protest at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.

President of the Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR), Comrade Alex Omotehinse, said the campaign was to draw attention to ‘the failure’ of the police in Ogombo, Eti-Osa, Lekki, and Area ‘J’ Police Command to investigate Salami’s murder.

He emphasised the ‘indifference and lack of commitment’ shown by the police in addressing the incident, despite it being duly reported at the Ogombo Police Station.

He said: “As civil society groups, we are deeply touched by the pain of the bereaved family. The police appear uninterested in investigating the murder which was perpetrated in broad day light. The immediate family is worried and frustrated by the delay that is increasingly assuming a deliberate ploy to shield the perpetrators from justice.

“The deceased, who is the breadwinner, left behind his critically ill aged mother (who unfortunately died in her inconsolable state in the last week of October), his wife Mariam and three daughters, Sinata (five years), Ayisha (four years), and Arafat (two years). It is over eight months that Salami was murdered. It is indeed sad that the family have been left to mourn him without any hope of justice. We are also requesting the National Human Rights Commission to demand urgent investigation into the gruesome murder without further delay.”

The groups, accompanied by the widow, has submitted petitions to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) through the Lagos office of the agency.

Mrs. Salami, in her emotional testimony, recounted the devastating events and expressed her concerns for her safety and her three daughters, as they continue to live in the same community.

She also shed light on her husband’s fear of retribution due to false accusations of embezzlement, which he vehemently denied.

“I returned from work on April 18, and learnt that my husband was dead and had buried. Since then, nothing has been done to it. Some of my brothers’ in-law made a complaint that same day to the police station because he was shot. I learnt after he was shot dead, some people in the community took his remains home and buried immediately, they didn’t take him to any hospital, they just buried him just like that.

“I asked why they buried him without anybody’s consent; they said the blood was still flowing. Before they even brought him home, they had dug the grave to show how wicked they are. I don’t know who these people are. The only thing I know is they accused him of collecting N20 million from one chief in Ajiran. That’s the only thing my late husband told me and ever since then, he’s always scared even to go out. I kept asking him if he collected money to kill somebody, he said he did not. There was nothing in his bank account when I checked after his death and it is not possible to collect N20 million in cash.

“I was invited at the station to write a statement. Since then, they have done nothing about it. They keep saying it’s cultists that are fighting, that we should forget about the case. Why would they kill somebody and bury him and tell the people investigating to forget the case?

“I want justice and I want the government to protect me and my children; I still live in that community because I have nowhere else to go. I know after today, they will come after me and I’m not scared.

“Nigerians should just be aware that if anything should happen to me today, it’s the same people that killed my husband that killed me.”

Acting Commissioner for Police Ayilara Waheed, while receiving the petition, assured the public that the case will be investigated. He urged those with factual information to come forward and provide evidence to support the investigation.
