  • Osun youths protest against tribunal judgement

A group of youths in Osun State under the aegis of the Osun Concerned Citizens on Wednesday protested judgement of the Osun Election Petition Tribunal on the September 22, 2018 governorship poll.

Last Friday, the 3-person tribunal ruled the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship, Senator Ademola Adeleke, was the winner of the poll.

At the peaceful protest, the youths, in their hundreds, marched round major streets of Osogbo, the state capital, from Ayetoro junction via Old Garage and Okefia to Olaiya area.

The youths, who carried placards with various inscriptions like “Oyetola remains our governor,”; “We voted for Governor Oyetola”; “We cannot be intimidated” among others caused a traffic gridlock for many hours.

Addressing the crowd, the General Secretary of the group, Comrade Yaya Ademola, said the protest was necessary to sensitise the people about issues associated with the Osun governorship election.

He noted the lacuna in the ruling of the tribunal, which declared  Adeleke the authentic winner of the September 22, 2018 gubernatorial election.

Expressing optimism the Court of Appeal would overturn  the tribunal judgment, he said any attempt to distort the majority votes would be  resisted.

He said: “The said verdict, which is a split decision by which a majority of 2 of the 3 member Panel, purportedly declared Mr. Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the September, 22 and 29, 2018 Governorship Election is clearly unacceptable to us and the overwhelming majority of the people of Osun in general and the Electorate in particular.

“Our concern in this matter is not just a partisan disavowal of a judgment that is unfavourable to our preferred candidate, Mr. Isiaka Gbeyega Oyetola of the All Progressive Party.

‘’Our rejection of the said verdict is borne out of the clear fact that it is a thinly disguised attempt at clothing the product of a black-market judicial heist with the garb of legality in the hope that it may acquire legitimacy.

“Notwithstanding the fact that a proper legal response to this unjust verdict has been entered at the Court of Appeal, we hasten to say that the basis with which the majority judgement was made is strange and baseless.

“In the first instance, the claim of the majority judgement to declare that the 29/09/2018 rerun illegal, on the basis that only Polling Officer and not Returning Officer could cancel results in the 7 Polling Units across the 3 Local Governments in the rerun does not arise.

‘’Neither the Polling Officer nor Returning Officer cancelled elections in the affected areas. Elections didn’t take place. Where it did, it was disrupted with ballot boxes snatched and carted away with no returns.’’

He added: “In Orolu, Ife South and Ife North, elections were disrupted with no returns. In Unit 017, Ward 5 , Osogbo LG, election did not hold at all and no returns.

‘’Under this circumstance, it is a settled case at the Supreme Court in James Faleke vs INEC (2016),that where the difference between the two leading candidates will be determined by the votes of places where elections didn’t hold or disrupted, there will be rerun.

“This situation is not peculiar to Osun. Below are some examples of rerun: a. 2011 Anambra Senatorial Election between leading APGA and ACN with a margin of 697 against the cancelled 7,930 votes. b. 2013 Anambra Guber Election between leading APGA and PDP with a margin of 79,754 against 113,113 cancelled votes. c. 2015 Imo Guber Election between leading APC and PDP with a margin of 79,529 against cancelled votes of 144,715.

“2015 Bayelsa Guber Election between leading PDP and APC with a margin of 33,154 against 120,000 cancelled votes.

    e. 2015 Guber Election between leading leading APC and PDP with a margin of 41,353 and 49,953 cancelled votes.

“Again, the Petitioner didn’t prove that election took place or there were returns in the affected areas. He did not even plead that the rerun is illegal. When has Court become a father Charistmas who gives what was not prayed for to declare the rerun illegal?

“Again, how could the Majority of 2 out of 3 deduct votes in 23 units merely for the fact that INEC did not properly fill Form EC8A? How could 23 units of the entire 3,010 could be substantial enough, assuming it is non-compliance with electoral rule for Judges to alter votes of the people more so, when the Petitioner didn’t demand for it? If it is substantial enough, would it not make better sense to pronounce rerun in the 23 units instead of the algebra, subtraction and addition with which the majority 2 turned themselves?

“We are concerned and indeed alarmed that rather than adjudicate in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Electoral Act that emphasises Substantial Compliance or lack of it or want of it as the basis for proving the validity or otherwise of the election of a candidate, the majority decision of the Tribunal  arbitrarily pitched its tent with the formal irregularity of the failure of INEC to fill certain columns of the Result Sheets even when they do not affect the number of votes scored by candidates! This amounts to a disingenuous working to a predetermined answer.

“Under Civil Rule, Electorate votes determine who governs the State and it is by simple majority. Election Tribunal cannot substitute itself for the electorate role – vis-a-vis voting. Osun Concerned Citizens stand for Democracy and Justice. We firmly believe that the Electorate in Osun had spoken and the attempt by the majority decision to turn the Tribunal into a ‘’Selectotate’’ shall be resisted.

“We shall not rest until true Justice is done in the final determination of all appellate proceedings. No to Jankara Justice! Osun electorate have spoken through their majority votes!! Attempts to obstruct our votes shall be vehemently resisted.”

One of the protesters, Margaret Okpako, said; “We Deltans all stood to vote en mass for Ogboru last Saturday with the joy that he has taken over Delta, only for us to hear that the election has been rigged by the same PDP.

”We want Ogboru to be the governor of Delta State, that is why we embarked on this protest, which is taking place now across the 25 local government area of the state. We believe it is only Ogboru that can save us from this suffering that we have been subjected to for the past 20 years.

  • Osun 2018: Youths protest against zoning

pressure society in Osun State, the Coalition of Osun Youths Organisation, in conjunction with a non-governmental organisation (NGO), the Development Advocacy Group, yesterday staged a peaceful protest against agitation for zoning of the governorship seat to Osun West Senatorial District.

Kick-starting the procession at Ayetoro junction of Osogbo, the state capital, the protesters, mainly youths, moved through the Old Garage and Olaiya Junction before terminating the march at the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat on Gbongan Road.

As the protesters marched on the road, they distributed handbills to motorists and passers-by to sensitise them about what they called the “evil” of zoning.

At APC’s secretariat, the leader of the group, Dr. Ademola Oyedokun, described the clamour for zoning as antithetical to democratic principles and ethos.

He noted that instead of promoting zoning, which he said was capable of causing disaffections and division among Osun State residents, competence should be encouraged in the interest of the state’s future.

Oyedokun said the zoning sponsors were only promoting their “parochial economic interests”.

The spokesman urged the people to insist on competence in the choice of who leads the state and who is capable of providing continuity of good governance.

He said: “As young citizens of the state, our concern finds expression in the submission of Mao Tsezong that ‘the success of a society depends on the ability of the leader’. The imperative of leadership in propelling development or otherwise is more crucial than that of a surgeon in the hospital. This is because the greatest disease is poverty, which can only be cured by political surgery and care.

  • Youths protest death of four residents, attack on ex-monarch’s home

Irate youths in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State yesterday protested an attack on the palace of the late village head of Ikot Ese, Chief Ukanga Udo, by suspected militants.

The attack, which occurred at the weekend, led to the death of four persons, including the son of the late village head, Ofonime Ukanga.

Six others reportedly sustained gunshot wounds.

Those injured, some villagers told The Nation, are receiving treatment in various undisclosed hospitals.

The angry youths were said to have blocked the Etim Ekpo-Iwukem Road for over four hours, forcing commuters to Aba, Port Harcourt and other adjoining states to be stranded.

One of the protesters, Comrade Michael Akpan, said the action by the youths became necessary “to draw government attention to several unprovoked attacks and killings of innocent people of Etim Ekpo by the militants”.

He added: “We have endured this untold hardship for over two years. Yet, there has been no serious intervention from the local government authorities and the state government. We have lost several able-bodied youths and professionals who would have helped in developing our society.

“Even the police are helpless in this situation because last Friday, the hoodlums killed two of them on this road. They also burnt their van at Uruk Ata II, where the militants have been terrorising the residents and burning their homes. We must not continue to keep quiet and die because what is has been happening for two years shows a complete absence of government and security in this place.

“In the latest attack, the police came and repelled them and they (militants) retreated for about two hours and thought they had escaped completely. But they later returned when the policemen left, only for the hoodlums to start shooting and burning of houses in the compound.”

Police Commissioner Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi said his men had been working to restore peace in the area.

He said: “My men were there till 8 p.m. But immediately they left, the cultists returned around 9 p.m to launch an attack.”

  • Youths protest against traders

THE protest by members of the Onitsha South Youth Network paralysed yesterday activities in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

They urged Governor Willie Obiano to prevail on traders to leave the chairman of Onitsha South Local Government alone.

The Chairman of the council, Lady Ann Chukwuneke, was allegedly attacked by traders while her official vehicle was vandalised during an inspection at Sanniez Street, near Ibida/Sokoto Road.

The area was blocked by the traders during the inspection.

She ordered for the decongestion of the place and she was allegedly attacked by the traders.

They said: “We members of the Onitsha South Youth Network hereby resolve that our silence and resignation to fate cannot help us, but will compound our problems, which may ruin the future of our local government. We urge the state government to intervene.”

  • Youths protest kidnapping, killing in Imo

There was tension in Owerri, the Imo State capital, yesterday as over 2,000 youths marched on the streets to protest the increasing rate of kidnapping, ritual killing and other crimes.

The protest, which started around 9am, grounded movement on major streets, especially around the Government House.

Security men prevented the youths from entering the Government House and the Police Headquarters.

The protesters, who wore black shirts, however, were not deterred as they sang anti-police songs.

Their leader, Emeka Ohasiri, said the protest, tagged “Black Monday”, was a peaceful walk through Owerri to create awareness on the insecurity in the state.

He said: “We’re trying to register our displeasure over the killing, arson, robbery and kidnapping and we want to bring it to the notice of the government because we can no longer keep quiet.

“There is no family in Imo that has not been affected. We are all victims of this security collapse.

“We want to be reassured that those responsible for these crimes will be brought to book, especially those who killed the Protocol Officer to the Deputy Governor, Laz Anyanwu.”

The youths, who were angered by the refusal of the Commissioner of Police, Baba Adisa Bolanta, to address them, barricaded the road leading to the Command Headquarters.

They carried placards with inscriptions, such as “Youths say no to further kidnapping and killing of our people”; “Our state is turning into a killing field, we demand a stop to this madness”; “Expose the kidnappers and ritual killers now”and “Government should give us security in the state”, among others.

Police spokesman Vitalis Onugu denied the insinuation that the police were not doing enough to curb crime in the state.

He said: “After all the command has done to reduce crime, it is malicious to say we have not done anything.

“We believe the protest is sponsored to smear the image of the police.

“What have they done to assist the police? Have they volunteered any credible information that was not followed up by the police to arrest criminals and kidnappers?”
