Religious leaders, speakers urge Nigerian youths to take charge of nation’s future

Prominent religious leaders and motivational speakers have called on Nigerian youths to take ownership of the nation’s future by remaining focused on its goals and vision, and by actively contributing to its development.

Speaking at the ‘Men on The Move Conference 2.0’ themed ‘Love, Equip, Align, Deliver (LEAD)’, the speakers urged youths not to lose hope in the country despite its challenges, warning that meaningful change cannot happen without their active involvement.

Among the notable speakers were nation builder Pastor Fela Durotoye, Convener and Senior Pastor of Harvest House Christian Centre, Akobo, Ibadan, Rev’d Gbeminiyi Eboda, business coach Dr Olumide Emmanuel, brand and leadership consultant Dr Leke Alder, and former Attorney-General of Oyo State, Seun Abimbola (SAN).

The event, which featured plenary sessions, panel discussions, breakout sessions, musical performances, and a raffle draw, focused on empowering men and encouraging national transformation through purposeful leadership.

In their various sessions, the speakers emphasized the urgent need for a national reset driven by visionary and responsible leadership.

They challenged Nigerian youths to stop shifting blame and instead take responsibility for shaping the country’s future through positive actions and values-driven leadership.

Speaking on the topic: “Developing Investment Mentality”, Dr Emmanuel, urged men and youths to eliminate what he described as toxic mindset in order to maximise opportunities. The pastor charged youths to rise up, saying foreigners would not solve Nigerian problems.

He said: ‘’Don’t give up. No one will do anything for you. No one will solve any problem for you without your direct involvement. So, get involved in your own life and take responsibility with consistency and focus, you will get there’’.

In his presentation, a brand and strategic leadership consultant, Alder, said focus was pivotal in achieving great vision and plans. He urged the youths not to look at the situation of the country as a reason for their failure but to remain focus.

Alder said: ‘’Don’t look at the situation of Nigeria. Nigeria has nothing to do with your future. Don’t lose focus. Trial will come; even in your trial, you must be a leader. You cannot afford to give up. If you give up on your nation, if you give up on your future, you have given up on your heritage. You have to fight it.

He emphasized the need for a central vision to reset the country and his firm belief in the capacity of the Nigerian youth to achieve greatness, saying “to reset the country, we need to rally it around a central vision, send it to them so that they can see. There is nothing this generation cannot accomplish. Some people have to sit down round the table and fashion out a vision for the country’’.

Also speaking, Durotoye urged Nigerian youths to become nation builders by accepting responsibility and embracing excellence adding that great nations were built by those that wanted to do their best in their little ways.

“Nation-building is accepting responsibility, not looking for people to blame. Blaming is not a leadership skill. The point is what each and every one of us will do what we should to solve the problems we can solve individually with what we have. The leader that we need is in front of the mirror. Go there and you will find the leader”, Durotoye said.

A former Attorney-General of Oyo State, Abimbola (SAN), speaking during one of the syndicate sessions said anyone holding a leadership position must leave lasting legacies for generations to come.

Speaking on the essence of the conference, the Convener, Pastor Eboda said the event was in response to men’s celebration in the month of June globally as well as a the need to create a platform for boys and men to get focus and attention.

Describing men and endangered species, Pastor Eboda said men are usually under intense pressure, hence the need to create an ecosystem for men to thrive and mingle without been judged.

He said, “As you are aware, every June globally men are celebrated. You all know that there are so many things that are focused on just the female gender. We are not against that. We are just saying it’s also important that the man is well looked after.

“To a large extent, everything revolves around the man. If you can fix the man, you can fix the world. Everything started with one man. So, God started with Adam, and from Adam we had the formation of the woman, and we had the rest of humanity. There is so much pressure on the male gender. The male gender is an endangered species.

“So, we put it upon our heart to organise an ecosystem for men, where men can rise, thrive, and lead. It begins with self-leadership. Last year was our first event. We had a huge turnout of over 3000 men gathered. This year we have crossed that number. That also tells us that there is a need in men for community.

“Men need spaces where they can connect with other men, where they can be vulnerable without being judged, where they can be open, where they can be mentored. No matter where one is in his journey, he still needs mentorship’’.

He added that this year’s edition is also bringing the age gap by introducing competition for boys across the various schools in the state.

The conference concluded with the public presentation of Pastor Eboda’s new book entitled “Anchorman Man” as well as presentation of cash prizes to outstanding students at the earlier conducted school competitions.

  • Experts urge youths to embrace visionary thinking

Experts urge youths to embrace visionary thinking

Experts from various fields have urged youths to embrace visionary thinking, strategic goal-setting, and self-discovery as vital tools for personal growth and national development.

This was the consensus at the leadership summit with the theme: “Vision and goal setting session 2025,” on Saturday February 8, 2025, at the NECA Auditorium, Alausa, Lagos.

The event, which drew over 200 participants from diverse backgrounds, explored themes such as personal vision, agenda setting, and the role of young people in shaping a sustainable future. Speakers emphasized the need for young individuals to clearly define their aspirations and align them with actionable goals. They also highlighted that without a well-structured plan, potential remains untapped, and progress becomes difficult to achieve.

One of the facilitators, Usen Ekong Udoh emphasized the purpose of the program, stating that through the exercises participants are made to go through, it opens their minds beyond the normal and pushes them beyond their supposed limits to achieve greater things.

“You’re forced to introspect, you’re forced to dig deep and you’re forced to stretch your mind beyond the mundane, around what you wish for yourself, what you think you can do and because you have so many people around you with testimonies, with structure, with frameworks to guide you, you’re pushed beyond your boundaries, you’re pushed beyond your limits, your supposed limits and that push is what causes them to then do these wonderful things and then throughout the year, because you have these coaches who are available, you have access to them, you can ask them when you have challenges, they help, they act like a sounding board to help you navigate your year and those who have done it diligently, those are the testimonies you’re hearing.” He said.

Guest speaker, Dr. Peter Akindeju, stressed the importance of self-discovery in achieving success, emphasizing that true growth begins with a deep understanding of one’s strengths, passions, and unique abilities. He noted that many young people struggle to find direction because they have not taken the time to explore their purpose and what truly drives them. According to him, self-awareness serves as the foundation for setting meaningful goals and making informed decisions that lead to long-term success. He encouraged attendees to engage in continuous learning, seek mentorship, and remain adaptable in their pursuit of excellence.

He said: “Life is a marathon, it’s not a sprint, it’s important that you discover who you are and your spot in life, in the ecosystem of things, it’s important that you discover who you are and your spot in this scheme of things and you do that right early so that you can start building on your discovery.

“If you look at the number of years of active service that is expected from anybody, it’s usually between 30 and 35 years. All right, and it starts from like your early 20s, so, the earlier you discover who you are, what your makeup is and where you think you can best fit in, the better for you and then you can start building from there.

Coach Lara Yeku emphasised the importance of youths prioritising purpose over merely chasing jobs or financial gain. She explained that while money and career opportunities are essential, true fulfillment and long-term success come from aligning one’s work with a deeper sense of purpose.

She said: “As youths who are in an environment where things are not going on right, what I will usually say to youths is have a purpose for your life. Because you’re a youth, looking for a job is not the ultimate, but rather it’s your purpose.

“What are you on earth for? When a youth has clarity in terms of their purpose, then it’s easy for them to navigate through the different situations that they encounter. So for instance, a youth who is out of a job and currently thinking of looking for a job, the thinking and the mindset at that moment is not the best.

” The thinking and the mindset should be, what can I do to bring a solution to the world? If you’re thinking in that light that would help you enhance your employability, because you’re not just looking for a job, but rather you’re looking for a meaningful place where you can contribute your skills, your strengths, your gifts to make an impact in the job that you’ll be assigned to solve.”

Participants at the summit shared inspiring testimonials of how clarity of vision had transformed their careers and personal lives. Many expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from experts and network with like-minded individuals who are committed to growth and positive change.

  • ‘Impacting youths with entrepreneurial skills my passion’

‘Impacting youths with entrepreneurial skills my passion’

As a businesswoman, Mrs. Ozichi Bribena of OneSource Mart has two strong passions – treating customers’ right and impacting the young with entrepreneurial skills. And driven by her passion to demonstrate what excellent customer service should feel like, in the last 10 years, she dedicated her life touching lives and inspiring the young. In this write-up by EVELYN OSAGIE, she shares her journey, her passion and more.

ALL through her working career, before going into private enterprise to establish OneSource Mart, Mrs. Ozichi Eniye Bribena’s singular focus has been to treat customers’ right.

This, perhaps, explains why she has remained passionate about giving young people an early start in developing a customer-centric attitude in the workplace and even in general life situations. This is seen in the warm smile she easily bestows on people, like a gift and a blessing. Her experience covers areas such as Inbound, Outbound, Blended Call Centre, Coaching, Training and development etc. She has pioneered several projects including setting up new Contact Centers at three different states.

The exposure to the way large convenience stores operate overseas while studying for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, and then working in Airtel (formerly ECONET) for eight years, rising to become the Customer Care Manager of the telecommunications company and five years in another telecom firm, gave Mrs Bribena, ample experience on how service-based organisations should treat customers: always conscious that the person who walks to make a purchase or transact business is a king that should receive royal treatment and pampering.

In fact, her decision to break out and set up OneSource, which is set to grow into a chain of convenience superstores in the key urban centres across the country, was triggered by a particularly bad experience at a store in Lagos. And since starting out, quality service delivery and giving customers a beautiful, enduring experience has been the staying power of the company. She shares her journey.

Before establishing One Source Mart, what were you doing; and how did the experience prepare you to embark on an entrepreneurial journey?

Before OneSource Mart, I worked in three other companies. After completing my NYSC, I joined the global Auditing and Management Consulting Firm, Arthur Anderson, which is presently known as KPMG as a Customer Relationship Officer. After about two and a half years, I moved to ECONET Wireless, which is the present day Airtel, as one of the pioneering staff in Customer Care. I spent eight years there and rose to the position of Customer Care Manager. I later moved to a private company, Adonai Net, a company that partnered with Airtel to offer closed user group services, as Head, Customer Services. I spent five years with the company before the birth of OneSource Mart on December 20, 2014. My career in customer service has been very useful from the inception of One Source Mart, by positioning the company as a customer-centric business, offering excellent customer service. And since starting out, quality service delivery and giving customers a beautiful, enduring experience has been the staying power of the company

At what point did you decide to set up One Source Mart?

Two years prior to emergence of One Source Mart, we partnered with one of the major supermarkets in Lagos where our involvement assisted in re-positioning the brand and growing it. One day my husband and I visited a family in Amuwo Odofin area in Lagos and stopped over at a neighbourhood supermarket to buy a gift for the family. We got the worst customer experience we had ever encountered and felt, we or anyone for that matter didn’t deserve such shabby treatment. We thought and felt residents in that neighbourhood deserved much better.

Out of a passion to demonstrate what excellent customer service should look and feel like, we commissioned a real estate agent to commence the search for an appropriate location within the Amuwo Odofin area. A few months later, we got a place and that became our first store. At this juncture, I resigned my job at Adonai Net to focus on achieving the strategic objectives for establishing the business. Now, the rest is history and we have expanded to open a branch in Victoria Island and another that will open in the last quarter of the year in Ikeja GRA. We now have OneSource Mart across several locations in the Lagos metropolis.

What lessons did you learn from COVID-19 pandemic/the lockdown experience and how have you adapted such to the operations to foster growth, boost sales and income?

The experience led us to incorporate delivery service to our customers, on request, especially those living on the Island and its environs. Of course, home delivery brought about an increase in sales and customer loyalty.

We have had instances where merchandising enterprises with a track record of credibility have deployed their platforms to exploit win-win opportunities that support worthy causes in education, health and other social endeavours. In such instances the businesses attract patronage by offering part of specific sales to such worthy causes.

What ways is your organisation giving back to society?

We have a robust programme that provides opportunities for students on holiday to do vacation  jobs, where they get hands-on opportunities to observe and learn the workings of the business. Watching young people learn about and practice customer service in real-time, in other words exhibiting a customer-centric attitude, gives me joy and really excites me. We have been laser-focused on achieving this objective with each cohort of young people that have passed through our holiday programme. We also collaborate with a Christian ministry that sends relief items to prisons.

In your view, what are some of the attributes should young women entrepreneurs pay attention to that can make a business standout?

Using OneSource Mart as a case study consistency in quality service delivery is key.

You once shared your beautiful story of how you met your husband, saying it made the union between the East and the Niger Delta happen?

We met in church, Wordbase Assembly to be precise. My tall, handsome husband is excitingly friendly, strong man of faith, who is passionate about the things of God.

      What is style to you?

For me, style means that what I wear must first be comfortable, decent, clean and beautiful

When you are not thinking about OneSource Mart, how do you unwind?

I watch television, especially documentaries on important events, inventions, news and comedy. I also spend time bonding with my family and returning calls and emails I couldn’t attend to while at work.

What kind of books do you read apart from Christian books?

I love to read books by renowned entrepreneurs and leadership books written by great leaders.

    What’s new?

We are open to exploring any mutually beneficial partnerships with worthy causes on an ongoing basis.
