NAFDAC cautions youths against illicit drugs

The National Agency for Food, Drug, Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned youths against use of illicit drugs because of its adverse effects in the society.

NAFDAC’s Kwara State Coordinator Mrs Roseline Ajayi gave the warning in Ilorin while fielding questions from reporters yesterday.

She expressed concern about the rate at which youths over dose on drugs, which she describe as a challenge facing the agency due to the harmful effect on health.

According to her, the agency is scaling up enlightenment campaign in schools, markets and other public places, and with youth corps members in various languages on the need  to be aware of drug abuse.

She highlighted logistics as one of the problems NAFDAC faces in meeting some of its responsibilities.

Ajayi said as a regulatory body for drugs and foods, it also monitor the products of manufacturers until it gets to the end consumer or user and ascertain that marketers do not stock expired drugs or other products.

The coordinator, who is a deputy director, said it always collaborated with the state and other security agencies in the war against drug abuse, but noted the difficulties due to inadequate logistics.

She said another major problem the agency faces in the state was bread bakers who, she claimed, bake their products in hygienic premises.

Ajayi refuted claims by some bread bakers in the state that the agency was making life difficult for them.

The coordinator explained that they were only asked to bake on a stainless tray, keep a clean environment and get the right premises for proper hygiene as well as pay their yearly dues.

  • Ondo youths hail governor

Some youths under the aegies of Ondo Youth Coalition (OYC) have described Governor Olusegun Mimiko-led administration as innovative.

According to the coalition, Mimiko has been able to draw a line between governance and politics in the implementation of people-oriented projects. The youths said the global attention drawn by the state under the governor attested to the governor’s impact.

In a statement by its President (Adekanmbi Oluwatuyi), Secretary (Michael Oluwole) and Public Relations Officer (Obanoyen Abiola), the OYC said the Mimiko-led government will be leaving a legacy at the end of its two-term early next year.

The statement reads: “The Mimiko-led government has impacted much on the lives of residents in the state with its lofty ideas and record creating innovations which have in no small measure raised the bar of governance in the state.

“The Mother and Child Hospitals, the urban renewal success which earned the governor a United Nations (UN) scroll of honour, Cocoa revolution and the government’s job creation activities as powered by its wealth creation agency as well as its economic diversification programmes have arrested global attention.

”Before now, no programme of note had warranted other states in the country to visit Ondo with the sole aim to understudy, but there are countless number of such visits under the Mimiko-led government with the latest being Kogi state.”

Re- echoing the call by the former Governor of old Kaduna State Alhaji Balarabe Musa that Mimiko should lead the progressives because of his people-oriented programmes, the youths caution the governor’s successor against jettisoning his laudable projects.

  • Stop linking Jonathan to avengers – Ex-President’s kinsmen

Stop linking Jonathan to avengers – Ex-President’s kinsmen

Youths from Ogbia, the Local Government Area of former President Goodluck Jonathan, in Bayelsa State, Saturday, warned against linking Jonathan to the notorious militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).

Rising from their meeting in Ogbia, the youth wing of the famous Ogbia Brotherhood defended Jonathan saying it was unthinkable for the former President to contemplate violence against anybody especially against Nigeria, a country he loves so much.

The National President, Ogbia Brotherhood Youth Wing (OBYW), Dr. Laguo Gilbert, insisted that Jonathan has no avenging traits, describing him as a man of peace and father of modern democracy in Africa.

Gilbert said: “History has it that even from his youth, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been a humble peace-lover who values good and quality education. This is why with such great thoughts he was able to grow to this current political position not minding his background.

“Moreover, Dr. Jonathan’s political activities from deputy governor to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria were in line with his true thoughts and characters which anchor on of peace, integrity and drive for quality education. Truly, this has been demonstrated in last 2015 general election”.

He said it was senseless and stupid to think that Jonathan who saved Nigeria from bloodshed by willingly handing over to the opposition would think of sponsoring a violent gang against the same country.

“This is why, the Ogbia Brotherhood youths wonder why detractors and enemies of progress would at this time come up with falsehood to intentionally deceive the public and discredit the former president”, he said.

Gilbert said while in various offices as political a leader, Jonathan recorded tremendous contributions towards nations building, and has remained consistent in that position as a former president.

He said: “Therefore, it is totally unreasonable for any group to intentionally drag this famous name to the mud. We the Ogbia Brotherhood Youths have discovered that the recent publication is not just senseless and baseless but also lacks merit and extremely unreasonable. It does not reflects the true character of Dr. Jonathan.

“We the Ogbia people are equally affected negatively by the activities of the militant groups in the Niger Delta just as every other Nigerian. We have been on the same page with other good Nigerians to finding lasting solutions to resolve this menace. Therefore, will not allow unreasonable utterances against the name of Dr. Jonathan.

“The Ogbia Brotherhood youths and the entire good people of Ogbia Kingdom condemn and reject these good-for nothing-elements and their wicked attitude. We warn that this must stop. Time for elections are far gone and what is required now is reasonable contribution towards moving Nigeria forward.

“We appeal to the general public to continually disregard these disgruntled elements capable of inciting negative impacts in society as their view remains senseless and selfish.

“Ogbia is known for peace and will at all time demonstrate peaceful coexistence. We encourage all well-meaning Nigerians to join hands with the government in making a better Nigeria”.

  • Foundation grooms youths for leadership

    Foundation grooms youths for leadership

In his desire to make youths in his constituency be relevant in national and international leadership, the member representing Epe 2 State Constituency at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olusegun Olulade, has organised special empowerment programme that aims at unlocking their potential. Oziegbe Okoeki reports.

The people had expected the usual form of empowerment which philanthropists and lawmakers hand out to the needy or members of their constituencies. That explains the huge crowd that converged on Bishop Abiodun Adetiloye Comprehensive College, Igboye in Epe for the Eleniyan Youth Empowerment summit.

As early as noon that day, youths from all the communities  had begun to throng the arena. There was spontaneous jubilation as Hon. Olusegun Olulade, popularly known as Eleniyan and his entourage made their way into the venue.

The roomy venue was largely suffused with traditional dancers who entertained the people. It was, indeed, an empowerment programme with a difference.

The lawmaker, who represents Epe 2 State Constituency at the Lagos State House of Assembly, introduced new vista in empowering his people. Those who are familiar with empowerment programmes organised by politicians or lawmakers, looked forward to gifts such as tricycles, motorcycles, sewing and grinding machines and other items to assist them start one form of business or the other or expand existing ones.

However, they were disappointed as the lawmaker introduced a new dimension to rendering help to his people. He did not want to give them fish. Rather, he decided to teach them how to fish in order to be self-reliant and contribute their quota to societal development. He decided to   empower them in a different, more enduring and impactful way. He was interested in their mental development.

In the circumstances, over 1, 000 youths across the state gathered at the Eleniyan Youth Empowerment Summit under the auspices of Eleniyancares Leadership Foundation organised by Hon. Olusegun Olulade, popularly known as Eleniyan.

The summit with the theme, ‘’Unlocking the Potential Within: Making Your Ideas Work”, was aimed at making the youth become conscious of their innate talents and work towards realising them in order to enhance their socio-economic well-being as well as contribute to the development of the their environment.

At hand to motivate and galvanise the youth to action was a motivational speaker, career/business coach and a social reformer, Mr. Muyiwa Afolabi, who was the Guest Lecturer. There was also a seminar session featuring publisher of Ovation Magazine, Chief Dele Momodu, member of the Lagos State House of Assembly and Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot. Other Nollywood actors such as Chioma Chukwuma and Kate Henshaw were present. Agriculture expert, Samuel Damola Andre, ICT expert, Victor Diali and another motivational speaker, Dayo Israel were also present.

In his address to welcome the participants, Mr. Olulade urged the youth to identify their various potential, unlock them and use them to better themselves and their communities.

He said: “I am inspired by my humble background to start a youth-based foundation to bridge the gap between the youth and their aspirations to be part of our country’s journey to glory. Youths should be seen as assets and not liabilities. This programme is one of the focal points of my foundation.

Olulade stated that if the youth could realise their talents, they would discover that they have something to offer the world. He said: “Keep your dreams alive. Understand that to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”

According to the Project Co-ordinator, Mr. Abiola Hamid, the vision of the foundation “is to see a pool of credible, ethical, responsible and accountable leaders who can promote economic and socio-political status of Nigeria and Africa. Therefore, we are all out to discover young people who have leadership potential, provide them with needed supports and encouragement through training programmes, scholarships, exchange and mentorship opportunities and then immerse them into a networking system that gives them power to influence their communities and the nation.”

The Eleniyancares Leadership Foundation, he said, was aimed at raising credible African young leaders through capacity building and training.

The guest speaker defined potential as the ability or the capacity to do or become something. According to him, one’s potential is one’s ability to do something, adding that the youth should be greater and better than they currently are.

He noted that everyone is born with blank minds but that people’s minds are shaped by their environment.

“The people around you make impressions on your mind; then your mind begins to develop and grow. Your mind now becomes a mind-set. The people that set your minds are your parents and siblings,” Afolabi said.

He informed them that God did not create and put them in Nigeria by mistake, but that He put them there to make a difference.

“You must stop the blame game and accept responsibilities. The greatest kind of hard work is the work you do on yourself. It is working very hard on your character, emotions and skills. Find the right association. Don’t get emotional about your mistakes. Never give up on your skills, life would test and challenge you. You also need to fear God so that you would do the right thing when nobody is watching you,” he stated.

Publisher of Ovation Magazine advised them not to be afraid of challenges, saying that he was able to achieve success in life based on his tenacity of purpose. He said he studied Yoruba as first degree and later pursued a Master’s degree in Literature in English.

“I joined Concord Newspaper against my wish in 1988 when I couldn’t get a job. I later got several promotions in the media house before I left for Classique Magazine. I also sold bread for some time.”

He informed them that it is better to try something and fail rather than not trying at all, saying that “something must shake you in life, but if you stay focussed, you would get there.”

Other discussants shared their experiences and how they achieved successes in their various careers, even as they urged them to believe in themselves and be determined to be successful in life.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, congratulated Mr  Olulade on his ability to put the programme together for the youth, saying, “it is timely because it falls in line with my passion and enthusiasm to ensure that both the youth and the state are developed.”

Represented by the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mr. Babatunde Durosimi-Etti, Governor Ambode said: “The programme falls in line with the strategic youth plan being developed in the state.”

In his goodwill message, Senator Olorunmibe Mamora commended Mr. Olulade for being a man of the people and for his passion for the youth.

“You have done well because you have taken the concept of effective and efficient representation which is the most important role of legislators very serious,” he said.

Mamora, who urged the youth to be positive-minded, said every destiny was a product of thinking.

“Be positive in your thinking; ideas rule the world. When you come up with big ideas, you can make a lot of money. Take maximum advantage of this summit,” he said.

One of the participants, Taiwo Yusuf said though the expectation of most of the participants was different from what they experienced and different from their idea of empowerment, they received something useful from the event as they were empowered in a different way.

“We needed something tangible such as capital that can enhance or better our living condition because it is not easy to start up a business as banks are not forthcoming with assistance.”

He, however, thanked the lawmaker for exposing them to the programme and giving them the necessary motivation to believe in themselves and forge ahead in life.

  • School denies attack by Hausa youths

Hausa youths did not attack Lagooz School in Agege, Lagos, last Tuesday, the proprietor and the Arewa Council of Chiefs, Agege Kingdom, have said.

At a press conference in the school, the proprietor, Mr Yomi Otubela, and representatives of the Arewa Council of Chiefs said the report could create ethnic tension in the community.

Otubela said there was a fight at the school’s car park after a valedictory service last July 16, which the police contained.

He said a teacher, Mr John Nwakam, was hit in the eye while attempting to separate the brawlers.

The proprietor said nobody entered the school or vandalised its property, adding that there was also no theft and the woman principal was not attacked.

He said the fighters were released by the police the next day and have since apologised for causing trouble.

“We distance ourselves from the report that the school was vandalised by the Hausa community. This is an area that is tense with a lot of political/tribal tension, so spreading this kind of news is not right.”

“The fight happened outside the school; they did not in any way come into the school. It involved two young well wishers of the graduating pupils. One of them unintentionally used his car to hit the other and an argument ensued between the two car owners that consequently led to a brawl. When the school management noticed it could not control the situation anymore, they had to involve the police at Elere Police Station. However, parents of the detained persons visited the school to plead and an understanding was reached. The culprits were later released by the police.”

The Arewa Council of Chiefs, spokesperson Alhaji Kabiru Dinar, condemned the report, which he said could tarnish the Hausa community’s reputation.

He said: “We are no more considered as settlers; we are part and parcel of this community and have a track record of peaceful coexistence. We don’t allow our children to cause trouble. This kind of publication can cause ethnic crisis. We are not happy because it can tarnish the reputation of our community which we worked hard to build.”

The group’s Mogaji Alhaji Zango Abubakar, said the incident was reported to him on the day it happened and he met with Otubela the next day and all was amicably resolved.

The principal, Mrs Olivet Otubela, and Nwakam denied being beaten.

Parent of one of the arrested youth, Alhaji Sabiu Rabiu, said the story misrepresented the incident.

  • Youths to Melaye: apologise to Tinubu or face protests

A group, the Grand Council of Yoruba Youths, has asked Senator  Dino Melaye to apologise to Senator Oluremi Tinubu for attacking her.

The group said it would mobilise 3,000 youths to protest at the National Assembly within seven days should Melaye fail to say sorry.

The Kogi West Senator came under attack for charging at Senator Tinubu during the executive session of the Senate on July 12.

The group, in a statement by Mr. Awa Bamiji, said Melaye used “other abusive, derogatory, arrogant and immoral language” against Mrs. Tinubu during a media briefing after the incident.

“We, therefore, demand that he should tender an open apology to the entire country,” the group said.

According to the group, no woman deserves such an abuse by any man, no matter the circumstance.

It said Melaye does not only owe Mrs. Tinubu an apology, but the nation for using derogatory language against a woman and a mother.

“His action can be best described as ‘Ijangbon de part 2’, considering what he did at House of Representatives before.

“If he’s so bold to do what he did openly, how much more if he got angry in the dark?

“We give him a week ultimatum to tender an apology, failing which we shall mobilise 3,000 Yoruba youth to protest against his ungodly behaviour at the National Assembly,” the group added.
