    Enugu assures youths on growth

The Enugu State government has assured youths that it would continue to provide the enabling environment and other logistical support for them to thrive.

The administration also challenged the youths to identify their passion and talent, match it with their skills and go ahead to find solutions to critical problems facing the people, if they are to survive and flourish.

Declaring open a two-day youth development seminar in Enugu, the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Charles Ndukwe, who was the special guest, submitted that people who have passion and adequate skills would have capacity to attract the funds needed to establish and expand any enterprise.

Ndukwe, described as a doyen in youth development in Africa, assured that society must be willing to pay anyone that could find solutions to problems.

He said, “While I urge you to look beyond government for jobs, I assure you that if you focus on your passion and match it with action, you can sustain yourselves and even go further and employ others, remember that little drops of water make the ocean and Rome was not built in a day, have patience, I am convinced, you can make it, and don’t forget that the richest people in the word are not government workers.

The commissioner, who was rather emotional, emphasised that young people who discovered their talents early, had brighter chances to succeed in life, as the era when people looked up to government for jobs had gone.

The seminar titled “How to identify business ideas and exploit them” was organised to help the youths create wealth in the midst of economic difficulty.

He praised the national coordinator Human Rights Volunteer Corps and founder of the Greater Tomorrow Initiative, Nigeria, Larry Oguego, who organised the free seminar, for his contribution to youth development in the country, especially in the south-east zone and Niger Delta regions and prayed God to bless and reward him abundantly.

In his opening remarks earlier, the convener of the workshop and national coordinator, Human Rights Volunteer Corps, Larry Oguego, advised the participants to manage time well if they hoped to succeed as entrepreneurs, stressing that every problem in Nigeria presented an opportunity to create wealth if anyone could address the problem.

Oguego, stated that as part of his new year plans, the organisation would soon commence an entrepreneurship and mentorship programme, designed to capture a greater number of young people based in rural communities and give them hope, especially those of them who though that the world was over for them. He, however, solicited the partnership and support of government and corporate bodies, as well as good spirited individuals in the society to sustain the project.

One of the participants from Anambra State, Chigozie Agulu, said that the seminar had positively challenged him to stop dreaming but to start doing something, pointing out that the workshop went beyond his expectations and imagination.

While commending Larry Oguego for the brain-storming seminar, Mr. Chigozie thanked them for the double gifts he received on the occasion and called on Nigerian Youths to think positively and contribute to nation building rather than constituting problem in the society.

The commissioner for youth and sports, Mr. Charles Ndukwe, later presented gifts to participants who were punctual at the event on behalf of the organisers.

More than 100 participants attended the seminar from different parts of southeast and Niger Delta regions of Nigeria.

FCMB promotes savings culture among youths

First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited has urged Nigerian youths, especially students, to expand their knowledge base on financial literacy and its principles. This, the bank stated, can be achieved by imbibing a savings and investment culture at an early age, which will help to empower them and secure their future in a sustainable manner.

Speaking yesterday during an outreach programme organised by FCMB for students of Federal Government Girls College, Akure in Ondo State, the bank’s Vice President/Group Head, Corporate Affairs, Diran Olojo, who represented the Group Managing Director/CEO, Ladi Balogun, said imbibing financial principles at an early age will go a long way to help students and the youths manage their resources effectively, appreciate how money works and how it can be channeled to productive ventures.

FCMB adopted the school for a full year as part of its financial literacy programme support. This adoption will result in the participation of the bank’s staff in various mentoring projects, the provision of teaching services to the students and other support activities during the next 12 months. In addition, the Bank also announced the donation of a power generating set to the school.

The outreach session forms part of activities to commemorate the 2016 edition of the Global Money Week and Financial Literacy Day celebration, an initiative of the Bankers’ Committee in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The financial literacy programme is focused on educating youths in Nigeria on the country’s economic environment, the importance of saving, financial control, planning and knowledge of basic financial concepts, amongst other benefits.

Principal of Federal Government Girls College, Akure, Mrs. Florence Ejikeme, praised the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and FCMB for committing both human and financial resources to execute the financial literacy initiative.  She described the outreach programme organised by the Bank as, ‘’an eye-opener and empowerment tool not just for students, but also the members of staff of the school’’.

  • Youths seek completion of projects in Niger Delta

The Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM) in Ondo State has urged the Federal Government to review cases of abandoned projects embarked upon by the Niger Delta Ministry in the Niger Delta region, especially in Ondo State.

While briefing reporters at Mahin in Ilaje Local Government Area, President of the youth group, Agbejoye Adetoye and the Secretary Akinjeji Friday, decried lack of federal presence in the area.

They said despite the immense economic and political contributions of the people to national growth, they have nothing to show for it.

The group, however, denied attacking the Minister of Niger Delta during the visit to the area as reported by some media houses.

The group explained that the youth only protested against the refusal of the minister to visit some projects undertaken by the Ministry of Niger Delta in the area, particularly the housing project at Kofawe in Igbokoda.

Agbejoye and Akinjeji accused the contractors handling some of the projects of shoddy jobs and in an attempt to cover it up, manipulated and diverted the minister’s visit to Aboto to inspect Ondo State Oil-Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) projects instead.

This, they said, infuriated the youth who, in turn, compelled some members of the minister’s entourage to inspect the Kofawe housing project to ascertain the group’s claim.

They further accused the contractors handling the ministry’s projects in the area of causing the protest, adding that their efforts to manipulate the minister’s itinerary sparked the protest.

NYDM lamented that many of the ministry’s contracts for projects awarded by previous administrations to transform the area had been abandoned after the contractors had collected over 70 per cent of the sum earmarked for the projects.

“We want to tell the world that Dangote Group is very much welcome to Okpella to do his business, and to say that every support that he will need from time to time, he will get at all times.”

  • ‘Buhari needs youths to succeed’

    ‘Buhari needs youths to succeed’

Hon. Aliu Mukaram is the Oyo South Senatorial District Coordinator of the Buhari Youths Organisation (BYO). He is the former House of Representatives candidate for Ibarapa North/Ibarapa Central Constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In this interview with JEREMIAH OKE, he speaks about the activities of the group and other issues.

What is the importance of Buhari Youth Organisation?

The Buhari Youths Organisation (BYO) is a platform organised to support those who share the same vision with President Muhammudu Buhari, especially in his effort to get rid of corruption in Nigeria. It is also centred mainly on how to create employment for youths in Nigeria because it is the fact that youths worked for emergence of President Buhari in 2015. This is not limited to a region, state or geo-political zone, but it cut across the country. President Buhari had emphatically said that his intention is to ensure that he drives poverty out of Nigeria and this is one of the ways he intends to do it. It is not a political association and it has no political affiliation. This is because the President knew that his victory at the 2015 poll was not based on political party affiliation, but the love of Nigerians. So, that is why he invited youths from South, West, North and East o join him in taking Nigeria to the next level. As one of the youths, I use to tell people who fall within our age bracket to support him because Buhari has no house to build again; he has no car to buy and he has no future to secure for himself at his age. But, he is working hard to better our future. Buhari is fair to all Nigerians. He needs more youths and we should support him.

You said BYO has no political affiliation, but you are a politician and a senatorial coordinator of the group. How will you explain this?

Yes, it has no political affiliation. We cannot ignore politicians, if they intend to share Buhari’s view. We cannot say because they belong to a political party they are not qualified to join us. Mind you, not all politicians are corrupt. I am a politician and I am ready to support President Buhari’s vision and mission to rebuild Nigeria. If you look at it, you will see that the state coordinator in person of Mr. Adeniyi Stanley is not a politician, but a technocrat. So, being a politician does not suggest that one is not qualified to belong to BYO. Buhari set up this association to give back to the masses who voted massively for him during the last election.

You said Buhari believes in fair play. But, why is his anti graft war centred on the opposition?

It is not centred on opposition. It is against corrupt individuals. I repeat it: Buhari is fair in all his dealings. You know that corruption is endemic and it has gone into the marrow of some of our people, especially the so-called politicians. Now that our President is ready to go after those who had bastardised our economy, some corrupt elements are not comfortable. If not for democracy, all those who are standing trials today as a result of misappropriation of fund should have gone to jail immediately government discovered their fraudulent deal. To start with, many lives were lost in the battle against Boko Haram in the Northeast, while some unfortunate few people are busy siphoning the fund meant to procure ammunitions for the military. How can you explain this? Secondly, former President Goodluck Jonathan refused to block the loopholes, so that his boys can steal our resources. Jonathan even commissioned Dasuki to disburse cash to his corrupt associates when Nigerians were suffering. That is highly inhuman. If President Buhari refused to go after them, won’t you say he is equally corrupt? Let us face reality, these people had killed our economy and Buhari must recover some cash from them to help our economy. I trust our President; he will deal with whoever steals our money even if it is his own blood. So, all we need now is to support him in his effort to rebuild Nigeria. I am not surprised at what the opposition is saying; it is because majority of them are political vampires.

You said this programme is for the masses. As the Oyo South senatorial coordinator, how do you intend to take it to the grassroots?

I have begun awareness in my senatorial district. I have gone to all the local governments in my senatorial district to tell people about the programme. I have talk to Senator Olusoji Akanbi, who happens to be a father to me and he has agreed to support us. If you know Senator Akanbi very well, you will know that he is the kind of the leader we need in this kind of group because he is politically and morally decent. Also, I have visited my good brother representing Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa North at the House of Representatives, Hon. Ayoola Gbenga to inform him about the development and he has also agreed to sensitize his supporters at home. I have also contacted our youths and some of our traditional leaders in the area to tell them Buhari’s vision for us.

Let me tell you, by the end of this year, Buhari Youth Organisation will be known throughout my senatorial district and we shall massively empower our youths. That is what I have done in my own jurisdiction and I believe other coordinators are also working tirelessly to ensure the masses are being carried along.

Are you sure the politicians will not hijack the project?

I am very sure it can’t be hijacked. I said president Buhari has structured it in such a way that politicians are kept away from the project. It is mainly for the youths who believe in the future of this great nation. if you attend our meetings, you will discovered that we don’t allow politicians to have a say as against the none politicians. We are doing this to ensure that they don’t use it for campaign platform when election comes. You will also discover that we don’t want them to woo us with money and forget our sense of reasoning. If you come for the first time, we will tell you that it is not a group where we share rice, money or any immediate gains but it is a group that was organised to better our future. So, anybody who wants to do politics should look for another platform to play politics and not BYO.

  • Group to train 50,000 youths

The Forum of South-South Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (FOSSCIMA)  plans to train over 50,000 youths in the region.

The Southsouth comprises Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers states.

Fosscima President Billy Gillis-Harry said the forum would train over 50,000 unemployed youths and empower them on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs).

The forum will hold its first-ever regional International Trade Fair in Port Harcourt in April.

“It is a four components trade fair. One, is for campaign of peace and security in the zone. It is  for economic progress of the region and we are going to utilise the trade fair to register over 50,000 unemployed youths across the Southsouth zone and see how best the forum can help in training and empowerment. Lastly, it is the trade fair itself,” he said.

He regretted that many youths now engage in armed robbery, kidnapping, car snatching, illegal bunkering and fuel sales, and illegal importation of arms, most of which have reached alarming levels in several Nigerian cities.

In the Southsouth zone especially, Harry bemoaned that youths have formed different gangs engaged in kidnapping, blowing up of oil pipelines, raping, oil bunkering and operation of illegal refineries, among other criminal activities.

“Hundreds of jobless and poor youths have died from explosions trying to scoop petrol from broken oil pipelines or overturned oil tankers,” he said.

Harry said over 500 companies from across the country and the West African sub-region would participate at the event which he is optimistic would be one of the best trade fairs in Nigeria.

According to him,  renowned corporate groups from the European Union will equally grace the event as the foreign firms have duly expressed their readiness to participate in the fair.

He said: “The 1st South-South International Trade Fair is a multidimensional trade fair which will provide an ideal and perfect business matchmaking platform for manufacturer, importers, service providers, investors and visitors to meet and discuss business opportunities.”

  • Group decries cultural neglect by youths

Group decries cultural neglect by youths

Centre for Igbo Arts and Culture (CIAC) has decried the  neglect of indigenous languages and culture by youths. The group said it was disheartening that Nigeria with over 250 ethnic groups continued to use English as its official language when the government and leaders should make efforts to promote the study of Nigerian languages, especially at the primary school level.

They added that the government needs to revisit the national policies in the educational system to ensure that at least Nigeria’s three major languages are taught in schools to resuscitate the already dying languages.

Chairman, CIAC Ezeani Kanayo Okoye spoke in Abuja on the need to teach the three major Nigerian indigenous languages in FCT primary schools. Okoye who was represented at the occasion by the Administrative Manager CIAC, Atueyi Ifeanyi said that indigenous languages especially Igbo may likely go extinct, which makes it paramount for it to be taught in schools.

His words: “It is deeply disheartening that Nigeria, a country with over 250 different ethnic groups, continues to use English as it’s general language of communication, our government and leaders should make every effort to promote the study of Nigerian languages in FCT schools especially at the primary level which is the foundation stage in a child’s life.

“Although the Federal Ministry of Education has made it compulsory for students to study and register at least one Nigerian language at Senior Secondary School examination, while accommodating the study of indigenous languages in education curriculum, implementation of the policy remains lukewarm.

“The government should re-visit the national policies in our educational system to ensure that at least Nigeria’s three major languages are taught in primary school levels as a step towards resuscitating ýour already dying languages.”

  • ‘We’ll empower women, youths’

    ‘We’ll empower women, youths’

In line with the Federal Government’s resolve to alleviate the suffering of the people through sound and people-oriented policies and programmes, the President of the Zion Assembly of Christ for All Nations, the Most Rev. Apostle Samuel Olawumi Ayodele, has promised to empower women and offer scholarships to students in the fold and other qualified Nigerians. This, according to him, will address the economic and educational challenges of its members. He added that “by so doing, they will be encouraged to serve God and humanity justly.’’

Apostle Ayodele stated this after his inauguration as the President of the Zion Assembly of Christ for All Nations at Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

He said for effective administration of Zion Assembly, a group of 200 independent Zion churches, four departments had been created. These, he said, include Theology/Evangelical Department; Children and Women Department; Youth Department, Education and Governmental Affairs Department.

Apostle Ayodele, who was ordained a minister in 1959, said Zion churches had been operating under different   denominations and leaders before now but the Holy Spirit has called for a unity of purpose where they will now operate under one umbrella with one voice to address spiritual and social issues. When this is done, white garment churches of Zion stock will be more respected.

On what the church can do to cushion the effects of the harsh economic conditions on members, Apostle Ayodele said: “We are quite aware of this and that is why we are creating jobs through our co-operative societies and micro-credit schemes to engage our women and men. Our skills acquisition programmes are there to lend helping hands to the jobless so that they can be useful to the society. Education is vital to us, that is why we are pooling our resources to establish scholarship schemes for our children in both secondary schools and higher institutions of learning.”

On why this relationship is just coming at this time, he said: “God’s time is the best. As He has power over the affairs of men, He specifically directed this move. The church as one fold must worship under one shepherd. What is left for me as a privileged servant is to do my utmost based on experiences garnered from several masters before me, including the late Most Rev. Apostles E.L .Ogunfeyimi and Orogbemi, to lead the group aright.

He said  it is the plan of the group to build youths that  are sound  in character and will be  the pride  of the nation, adding “we have religious and social institutions to handle this aspect of our life’’

On members’ participation in politics, he said: “We encourage our members to go into politics and make positive changes. Take it from me; it is a man that fears God that can govern well in the midst of temptations. It is a man that fears God that will not steal public money. It is he that will know that his position is transient and therefore would make life better for the masses. We have all the necessary mechanism to mould the character of our members and equip them for such offices so that they can make the necessary changes and impacts on the lives of the people’’.

He said his group is conscious of the right of the other person, even as it is out for spiritual and social changes and so our focus remains integrity.
