Some beneficiaries have used these stipends to further their education. Some are are currently sponsoring their siblings to schools today at all level of schools. The list goes on. • Youths back Jonathan for second term

Youths back Jonathan for second term

Young  business entrepreneurs who were assisted with funding and training under the Federal Government’s  youth empowerment programme have formed campaign group for the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The youths under the auspices of the Nigerian Young Entrepreneurs said over 5,400 have been empowered by the Federal Government under the ‘You-Win Programme.’

They promised to secure over 2.5 million votes for President Goodluck Jonathan at the poll.

Speaking in Abuja, the group’s Director of Media, Mr. Bello Muritala, listed some of the programmes being implemented by  President Jonathan to include, the launching of Venture Capital Fund and the provision of N220 billion to support small and medium scale businesses.

Others include the launching of Nangrooreneur to empower about 750,000 Nigerians in self employment, launching of new Automobile policy and the disbursement of special intervention fund through the Bank of Industry and Bank of Agriculture as well as the Central Bank of Nigeria Agriculture Intervention Fund.

Bello also praised President Jonathan for promoting the entertainment industry, through the Project Advancing Creativity and Technology (PACT) in collaboration with Nollywood. According to Muritala through the synergy with Nigerian entertainment industry, the sector has been provided with a N3 billion grant to further help the development of the sector.

In the same vein, Bello said the government has thought the implementation of the Sure-P scheme, been able to engage 320,000 youth’s useful activities.

He said the group is interested in collaborating with the government to make life better for the people.

Muritala said: “Out of the system that is good, there are still curtains things that are good that needs to be encouraged. We believe the president has done something good and will need to be supported to do more.

“After considering all the achievements and the need for continuity to avoid policy somersaults the coordinating committee and over 400,000 of the Nigerian Young Entrepreneurs across the country hereby declare support for the re-election of President Jonathan.

“We hereby declare our support for the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan. We urge him to go ahead with his aspirations and we promise him nothing less than 2.5 million votes through our efforts across Nigeria.”

Many of the beneficiaries spoke on how the government intervention has impacted on their lives and how their new businesses have grown in the last two years after they got support from You-Win.

  • NGO trains 500 women, youths

Worried by the awful plight of the downtrodden, the Blessed Gumpat-Foundation (BGF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has expressed its concern over the alarming rate of poverty in the country, even as it said many are busy accumulating wealth for themselves.

Founder of the NGO, Pastor Prisca Timpaul has continued to advocate the need to uplift the living standard of the people, including women and youths by empowering them in order to be self-reliant.

She said there is no going back in building a more economically viable society that will provide a favourable environment for the needy.

According to her, empowering women and youths with skills is the best option in checking the rate of social vices such as stealing, kidnapping, rape, prostitution and under age marriage, among others that are prevalent in the society.

She said the government is not doing enough to put in place adequate infrastructure that will enhance job creation for the people. She, therefore, appealed to public-spirited individuals, non-governmental organisations and the church to be more aggressive in tackling unemployment in the country.

Timpaul also said her skill acquisition centre does not only train its participants but also equips and empowers them to be financially independent and self-sufficient.

According to her, participants are trained in such areas as hat making, bead making, snacks (pastries), cake making, event decorations, dishes (African), tie-dye and production of liquid soap, bleach, hair/body cream, air freshener, stove thread, shampoo, cocoa beverages, disinfectants such as izal and dettol.

“We will no longer hear any woman say I am not doing anything in this church. The intention is to make sure that our people don’t complain that I they are not doing anything, and that has been accomplished. As an organisation, we are building people, empowering them and making sure that they are avenues through which the lives of others would be affected positively,” she said, adding that the training was free for all participants.

The foundation, which she said began about eight years ago in Ikotun-Egbe, a Lagos suburb, before it was relocated to Ogun State, was borne out of the need to reach out to the indigent women many of whom, she said, were living with men but were not legally married to them due to poverty.

On what informed the establishment of the Social Welfare for the Needy and Unemployed, Timpaul said it was an act of God.

The Social Welfare for the Needy and Unemployed in Nigeria and in the Diaspora led by the Chief Executive Officer/President, Peace Ambassador Joy Kolawole had donated much hospital equipment, ranging from beds, crutches, needles, syringes and mattresses to the Blessed Gumpat-Foundation to be distributed to hospitals.

Receiving the donation, Timpaul said Ajuwon Health Centre, Akute, Otta General Hospital and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) are among the beneficiaries.

While appealing to the federal and state governments and other public-spirited individuals to support the organisation, Pastor Timpaul urged those who have received the training to give freely to others. She expressed disappointment that after the training, some of the beneficiaries find it very difficult to help others.

While donating the items, Mrs. Kolawole decried the rate of unemployment in the country. She urged the Federal Government to put in place adequate infrastructure that would help in the establishment of small and medium enterprises that would create job opportunities.

She said the organisation has secured employment for over 125 members in Agro Farm at Mokolo-lucky community in Ogun State. She called for sponsorship from groups and individuals, corporate bodies and government agencies in carrying out the selfless service.

Contributing, Israel Nneke said the country will be a heaven for all when those who are richly endowed begin to use their riches to help the less-privileged.

He, therefore, appealed to Nigerians to support the good work of the organisation.

  • Chams’ chief urges youths on entrepreneurship

The Group Managing Director, Chams Plc, Sir ‘Demola Aladekomo, has urged Nigerian youths to take up the challenge of entrepreneurship.

He said globally, entrepreneurs drive  thrive the economy and account for majority of new job creation and innovation.

Aladekomo who made spoke  while delivering a paper titled The Entrepreneur as a Nation Builder at the 2nd Oladele Olashore Memorial Lecture at Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ikeji – Arakeji in Osun State at the weekend noted that only a paradigm shift in the social consciousness of the literate youth could stem rising youth unemployment in the country.

He lamented the inability of the  youths, especially graduates, to recognise societal needs as business opportunities that could be leveraged upon to create value and an enduring wealth for themselves and the nation at large.

Dismissing the myth that entrepreneurs are born and but not made, Aladekomo described Nigeria as a land of opportunities for innovative and enterprising young people.

Aladekomo who is immediate past president, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), said: “It is ironic that we have lots of unemployed graduates when there are lots of societal needs that are not being met in the Nigerian market.”

He wondered if it was lack of ideas or a false belief in how entrepreneurs are made that has kept the youths jobless at a time when the export market for cassava is grossly underserved.

He said: “The scenario is the same across thriving sub-sectors of the national economy with an increasingly ageing workforce in which opportunities abound for energetic youth and new ideas.”

According to him,  entrepreneurs are created through education, experience and mentorship, adding that nobody was born with exceptional entrepreneurial insight, ability or skills.

He said: “With the right skills and attitude, any Nigerian youth with ambition and ideas can go far because of the existing limitless opportunities in the market.

“Nigeria represents an exceptional and extremely exciting opportunity for young and smart entrepreneurs with guts.”

While narrating his entrepreneurial journey which started informally in food supply and transportation, the Chams chief urged the youths to get over the fixation for paid employment and to boldly venture into the uncharted informal sector to raise service standards.

“It is indeed delightful that Joseph Ayo Babalola University is striving to produce a new generation of youths that are self-sufficient, self-reliant, and competent,” he said.

He advised the undergraduates to emulate America’s youthful entrepreneurs’ 25.8 million small businesses that employ more than 50 per cent of the private workforce, generating more than half of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP).

  • Youths enjoined to participate in elections

Youths have called upon to participate actively in next year’s election, as part of their contribution to the deepening of democracy. The founder and President, Young Achievers Campaign Organisation of Nigeria (YACOON), Temitope Adewale, gave this admonition in an interview with The Nation. He stressed the need for youths to avoid the mistakes of  past leaders.

The youth leader said he was inspired by the need for the younger generation to contribute to political, social and economic emancipation of the people. He lauded some of the nation’s leaders, who assumed such positions at a very young age, saying this has helped to ensure the unity of the country.

“History, many will argue, always has a way of repeating itself, which, in my opinion, should only be so for positive historical experiences. Today, as Nigeria builds up to the 2015 elections, various youths have indicated interest to vie for political offices, but I am worried,” he said.

Adewale said that, despite being a leading and vocal campaigner for youth involvement in politics, he is worried that the situation is not changing for the better and that a negative part of Nigeria’s history is repeating itself because the younger generation has been avoiding politics.

He said: “First, I must commend Nigerian youths for demanding more by  organising debates for electoral candidates, interviewing them,  paying solidarity visits, organising rallies, bidding for campaign printing contracts, singing politicians to victory during and before the elections among other roles. It’s encouraging to know that many youths are asking for more involvement, hopefully because they have a plan.”

According to him, a driving force to this new passion in politics can be linked to the school of thought that power is never given freely, but forcefully. “I believe in this school of thought, but as 2015 draws nearer, it is becoming more obvious to me that most youths lack the understanding of what power is, who is in possession of the power, who is qualified to take it and when the qualified needs to make a move to take it. The youth power block is perhaps the most divided in Nigeria today,” he said.

Adewale said he was worried that most youths interested in politics lack a basic understanding of the constitution. “How can you be running for a legislative or an elective position without an in-depth understanding of what the constitution says? It’s better to enter university without writing WAEC, as the worst that you can get is a personal failure whereas as a politician you are risking the entire lives of the millions or more that you seek to represent as a result of your poor preparation and lack of understanding of both the Nigerian constitution and the party constitution,” he said.

Adewale encouraged every youth interested in politics to be ready to pay the price. He said: “You are seeking to officially lose your right to privacy, you are willing to have people that may ordinarily not have access to you shout you down and speak to you as they like. You are basically seeking to live a life of sacrifice and will be willing to leave the scene financially poorer and physically more stressed than you came in.

“To those ready for the real deal, I say welcome to the arena of sweat and toil where true leaders are made. Many youths will be made in 2015, but the extent of their preparation will determine their relevance and success post 2015.”

He said he had met with a number of youths, who spoke to him about their ambitions and interest in politics. Many of such youths, he said, explained that, in one way or the other, they lost interest because of fear that leaders of their party are not carrying them along or giving them the necessary access to reach their goals.

  • NGO empowers 1,000 youths

As part of its efforts to reduce the rate at which youths are lured into thuggery, particularly during election periods, the Great Elevation Care Initiative (GECI), a non-government organisation (NGO), has empowered 1,000 youths in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The beneficiaries were selected from the six local government areas of the Northern Senatorial District of Ondo State.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the National Coordinator of the NGO, Pastor (Mrs.) Grace Abebi Aruwajoye emphasised the need for all to be actively involved in the development of the state, adding that government alone cannot provide all amenities needed by members of the community.

She decried the civil service-driven orientation of the people, even as she said other sectors are left unattended to, thereby suffering neglect.

“We discovered that a lot of people are working for the government; it is only civil servants that you can get in Ondo State. Everybody depends on the government and this leads to an increase in the rate of unemployment,” she said.

Aruwajoye said such state of affairs informed the initiative’s training of the unemployed youths in the state by giving them the necessary skills and available resources to be self-reliant in order to be useful to themselves and the society.

As a result of her commitment to community development, Pastor Aruwajoye had to relocate to Nigeria from the United States of America. She appealed to well-meaning Nigerians in the Diaspora to come back home and improve the living condition of the people, adding that there is the urgent need to complement government’s efforts towards reducing the rate of poverty among the people and to encourage entrepreneurship in the country.

“Now that elections are fast approaching, we have to do everything possible to engage the teeming army of unemployed youths so that they will not be engaged as thugs by some unscrupulous politicians for their selfish interests. It will be very difficult to engage someone who has something doing,” she said.

She, however, enjoined other sister organisations not to give out money to the people but make it basically a training and empowerment programme.

She assured that the gesture would be replicated in the three senatorial districts and 18 local government areas of the state.

Chairperson on the occasion, Mrs. Solape Elegbeleye, wife of the Director-General of National Sports Commission (NSC), urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the training programme.

  • Youths back senatorial aspriant

    Youths back senatorial aspriant

Despite the crisis rocking the leadership Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, youths yesterday stormed Abagana in Njikoka Local Government, saying only loyal members would represent them in political offices.

They took the decision while endorsing one of the senatorial aspirants for Anambra Central, Chief Sylvester Okonkwo.

The over 4,000 youths  converged on Igwebuike Primary School, Abagana, for a rally.

They said they endorsed Okonkwo because of his consistency.

The aspirant is contesting the ticket with five others, including Prince Osita Ezenwa, Chief Annie Okonkwo, Dr. Obiorah Okonkwo and Chief Sam Ikefuna.

At the rally, the leader of the party’s youth wing,  Kenneth Ejike Ayiba, warned aspirants who sought a waiver to run, to join the queue and wait for another turn, rather than jumping from other parties to the PDP and seeking to take the front seat.

Clems Ezika, the former legal adviser, who was also at the rally, urged youths to support only tested and trusted members.

Another chieftain, Kennedy Onyeka Okonkwo, said the choice of Okonkwo was because of his philanthropy.

  • NDDC’s good music for youths

    NDDC’s good music for youths

it is my belief that when we develop and empower young people, we are bound to reduce crime and violence in the Niger Delta region. We also check kidnappings and vandalism of public infrastructure, especially oil installations, which are negatively affecting our economy today.” That succinctly summarises the position of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, as espoused by its Managing Director, Sir Bassey Dan-Abia, at the 1st Niger Delta Regional Youth Conference on Ethics and Value Re-Orientation, held at the Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt.

At that crucial conference, the NDDC articulated a 3-point agenda of capacity building, wealth creation and employment generation for the youths of the Niger Delta region. The action plan was the interventionist agencies’ affirmation that the youths of the region hold the key to the peaceful development of the future.

According to the Managing Director, the 3-point agenda for youths was significantly focused on deepening youth development and empowerment through re-orientation; rehabilitation and re-integration, to enable them contribute positively to the growth of the region.

Sir Dan-Abia said that the new action plan was a timely prescription to addressing the myriads of challenges faced by youths of the region with a view to creating a peaceful, secured and prosperous Niger Delta for all. “We are of the view that sustainable youth development and empowerment that will unlock the potentials of young people is a must do,” he said.

The NDDC boss stated that the youth conference was aimed at deepening development in the region with emphasis on raising world-class youths with the requisite skill and inventiveness to meet contemporary challenges in the oil-rich region.

He said that it was only through moral rejuvenation and ethical re-orientation that we could achieve sustainable youth development and empowerment, noting that the philosophy of the conference was hinged on the bed-rock of a deep concern and the need for total re-orientation of youths of the region.

The Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw, spoke along the same line, noting that the commission was putting a lot of emphasis on taking care of the youths of the Niger Delta. He observed that the youth conference was part of the new thrust of the NDDC to enhance its service delivery.

Senator Ewa-Henshaw assured the youths that the commission would partner with them for appropriate training and mentorship, stating that the commission was determined to transform the Niger Delta in line with the development agenda of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

The NDDC Director of Youths, Sports, Culture and Women Affairs, Prince W. Alazigha, said that the importance of youths in any society could not be over-emphasized, adding that they bear the brunt of most societal inadequacies. On account of this fact, he said that the NDDC had since inception mounted various skill acquisition programmes to train the youths of the Niger Delta.

The views of the captains of the NDDC show that they understand that youths represent the collective dreams of a stable and prosperous society where commerce and industry thrive, and people develop their fullest potentials in peace and security.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the  key aspect of NDDC youth development scheme appear to focus on enabling the youths to gain useful skills with which they could be gainfully employed. The fruits of this strategy are beginning to manifest as statistics made available by the commission indicate that a total of 5,765 youths across the Niger Delta Region have so far benefited from various skill programmes of the commission.

To further improve the lot of the youths, the NDDC recently announced plans to engage 450 Niger Delta youths as part of its youth empowerment programmes. The new initiative involves the selection of 50 young men and women from each of the nine states of the Niger Delta region to carry-out periodic environmental sanitary services, traffic decongestion and control, clearing of grasses and weeds on the sides of major roads, cleaning and opening up of blocked drainages, security surveillance on oil/gas facilities and installations (pipelines) and other related matters under a special scheme.

The empowerment programme, meant to reduce unemployment in the region, has been aptly tagged as the Niger Delta Volunteer Scheme. Throwing more light on the programme, Barr.George Turnah, the Special Adviser to the NDDC MD on Youth, Sports, Culture and Women Affairs, said that the first phase would focus on engaging the skills of the youth in environmental sanitation, while the second phase would emphasize collaboration and cooperation between the commission and its development partners with a view to increasing the number of youths under the scheme.

He said that the final phase of the scheme would ensure that the young people were given opportunities to be employed in highly skilled jobs to enable the programme contribute to the economy of the region in terms of wealth creation and employment generation.

Turnah, noted that NDDC would continue to intervene in the provision of employment to the youths of the Niger Delta. “It is the hope of the NDDC that the volunteer scheme will provide multiple benefits for young people in the region where employment options are otherwise limited. The 450 Niger Delta youths participating in the scheme will earn a monthly stipend as a form of support to enable them give their best to community development in the region and in particular for their productivity.”

As would be expected, the youths were very excited by the new programme. The Chairman, Niger Delta Youth Leaders Council, Mr. Ebis Orube, said the new initiative by NDDC to help the unemployed youths in the Niger Delta was a laudable programme that would go a long way in reducing social vices associated with youths as a result of idleness.

He said: “I just hope it will accommodate as many youths as possible and at the same time become a sustainable programme. So, I advise that they involve those that are really in need of jobs in order for them to have a means of livelihood and not give out the opportunities based on political considerations.”

Mr. Joseph Nwabuakwu, a youth leader from Aniocha North Local Government Area in Delta State, was one of the many others that hailed the programme. He said he was optimistic that a better Niger Delta was in the offing, noting that the current efforts of the NDDC to turn the tide for the region were encouraging. “We can hope for a greater future for the Niger Delta, because the NDDC is transforming this region and in no distant time we shall see a greater Niger Delta region. The inclusion of the young people in its development plans also means it is going to be sustainable,” Nwabuakwu said.

He added: “We have not yet gotten to where we should be, but it doesn’t mean we are still curled up where we used to be. The tough situation we experience in the region can be conquered when all hands are on deck. It involves the coming together of government, major stakeholders and the youths as well. The youths will take the mantle some day. So, whatever issues or programmes we have should have their interest at heart.”

For the former National President, Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM), Mr. Godspower Odenema, the programme was a welcome initiative as it had the potential of not only meaningfully engaging the Niger Delta’s jobless youths, but also giving impetus to the transformation agenda of the Federal Government.

According to Odenema, “I am happy that the NDDC is making efforts to transform the Niger Delta into an economically prosperous, socially stable and politically peaceful region with this programme. The Niger Delta Volunteer service scheme will surely resolve many knotty problems inherent in the region.”

The NDDC, he said, did very well by starting a programme that would take many youths off the streets. He further said that it would reduce the problem of youth restiveness in the region and promote stability and peace.

Before the introduction of the Volunteer Service Scheme, the NDDC had intervened in several rural communities, where many less-privileged people were empowered through skill acquisition programmes. In some of these communities in Cross River State, the beneficiaries of the empowerment programmes were full of praises for the interventionist agency.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Christiana Eyamba, from Obanliku Local Government Area of the state, said the cassava grinding machine she received through the programme would boost her garri production. She said she had since longed for a grinding machine to enable her to process more cassava and produce garri in commercial quantity. “I needed it, because we plant plenty of cassava in our area; with this machine I can now employ people to help me to grind.

Eyamba said that the skill acquisition programme and the starter packs given to them would go a long way in assisting the beneficiaries, because it would enable them to make more money and train their children in school. “We are going to produce garri in large quantity and we will sell to people from far and near; it will yield more money to us and the community,” she enthused.

Another beneficiary, Mrs. Roseline Adie, from Ikom, said the programme which was organised by the NDDC with the aim of fighting poverty at the grassroots, was a good and progressive effort. She noted that the sewing machine she got from the commission would assist her to expand her business and take care of her family.

Northern youths donate N2m for Jonathan’s form

The Northern Youth Forum (NYF) yesterday in Kano donated N2 million for the purchase of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) presidential nomination form for President Goodluck Jonathan.

NYF Chairman Bello Bichi said the token was not political, but “a clear indication that northern youths support Jonathan’s transformation agenda, as well as to enable him accomplish a second mandate”.

Describing Jonathan as “a detribalised leader”, Bichi said northern youths would not succumb to sentiments aimed at dividing the nation.

Minister of Education Ibrahim Shekarau collected the N2 million cheque on behalf of the president at Marhaba Cinema in Kano.

Shekarau said the gesture was more important than the amount donated.

He urged every PDP supporter to play his/her part to ensure Jonathan’s victory next year.

Present on the occasion were Minister of Youth Affairs Boni Haruna; Minister of Foreign Affairs Aminu Wali; Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs Ahmed Alkali and PDP stalwarts in the state.
