  • Govt to train 1,500 Niger Delta youths

The Federal Government will train no fewer than 1,500 youths from the Niger Delta  in various skill acquisition programmes this year.

Siegener Sabithos Nigeria Limited, one of the organisations partnering government in the training, made this known in a statement yesterday.

Its Chief Consultant, Dr Tunde Anifowose-Kelani, explained that the training was part of government’s efforts at increasing the human capital development in the country as well as check agitations and unrest, particularly in the Niger Delta areas.

Anifowose-Kelani said that 30 youths from the Niger Delta, were already trained in fish production, farming, Information Communication Technology (ICT), business development and entrepreneurial skills.

Anifowose-Kelani said the empowerment programme was not only a means of fast tracking development but an avenue to actualise the human capital development programmes of the federal government.

“This empowerment programme is not only a means of fast tracking development of the entire region, but one of the ways to actualise the federal government’s human capital development programme.

“It is the belief of the federal government that in addition to infrastructure, human capital development is quite vital and essential for the growth and development of any nation.

“Most of the crises we have in Nigeria today are as a result of the long-time neglect of human capital development, so this training will help reduce agitations in the region,” he said.

He commended the initiative by the federal government as well as the commitment of the Minister of Niger Delta, Mr Usani Uguru Usani, to the programme.

Anifowose-Kelani urged those who had already benefited from the programme to replicate the knowledge gained in their respective communities for the overall development of their people.

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s government should be appreciated in …the N-Power programme, which has directly and indirectly touched … youths. “We have observed the… efforts being put in place by the Minister of Science and Technology …Dr. Christopher Ogbonnaya Onu, which has continued to empower youths.”

The group noted that “the Ministry of Science and Technology under Ogbonnaya Onu  has remained committed towards intensifying research and innovation, as well as increase the awareness among the people in the country of the importance of science and technology to their daily needs.”

  • Stop plot to rig next elections, Ohuhu elders, youths urge Buhari

A group, Ohuhu Youths for Change (OYC) and elders of Ohuhu community have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, foil the plot by some hoodlums sympathetic to the son of a former governor, in collaboration with top INEC officials in Abia State to rig the next House of Assembly and governorship elections in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A statement by OYC, signed by the President, Akuagaba Ezerendu, said “the people of Ohuhu in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State have unmasked a plot by the son of a former governor of Abia state in conjunction with a top Abia INEC staff to shortchange the will of its people by manipulating the House of Assembly election in favour of the incumbent PDP member, Hon. Kelechi Onuzurike.”

Ndudim said the plot was hatched and used during the last Presidential/NASS election, a development that made it possible that even though the Ohuhu people voted massively for President Muhammadu Buhari and all APC candidates, they discovered that most polling units had no pulling unit result sheets and ward collation result sheets. This gave rise to PMB and the APC candidates being highly shortchanged by INEC officials who shamelessly manipulated the figures to suit the PDP candidates.”

The group said, “Ohuhu people are using this medium to call on the INEC chairman to warn its staff against a repeat of this sinister plot as it will be greatly resisted by its people during the governorship and House of Assembly elections.”

OYC also called on security agencies to deploy tight security in all its five wards’ collation centres as they would not tolerate any false security breach guise to make INEC collate its results outside the constituency’s ward collation centres.

  • ‘Youths are positive agents of change’

Youths have been described as vanguards of progress and positive change agents in their respective communities if their boundless energies are well harnessed and directed.

This was the submission of former Chairman, Ondo State Teaching Service Commission, Prof. Francis Igbasan, while speaking as a guest speaker at the fourth annual lecture series of Ikale Youth Ambassadors, which held last Thursday at the United Grammar School, Ode Irele.

The event witnessed donations of over 1,000 branded exercise books to pupils of the school. The gesture was in honour of the Patron of the group,  a distinguished son of Ikale land and Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun.

Igbasan in his lecture identified ages 15-35 as the most active segment of the youth and conceded that those above 35 years, but who share the ideas of a progressive society, are also regarded as youths.

His words: “Youths represent a vast and often untapped resource for immediate and long term community development efforts. So, the youth constitute the major resource base for any country that want to embark on any meaningful community development programmes.

“A whole range of community development activities such as construction of bridges and culverts, schools, markets, music and drama, preservation of natural environment, vocational skill training seminars, membership empowerment and awareness raising campaigns, are some of the roles performed by youths.”

He cautioned that for youths to be effective agents of community development, they must adopt the concept of active participation, which makes them a subject rather than object of development. According to him, it also guides them to appreciate that success could be achieved when they participated willingly in their own affairs.

Igbasan also listed poverty, low level of awareness, illiteracy, unemployment, lack of cooperation among youths, lack of skills and opportunity as factors militating against the potential and effectiveness of youths in their community development efforts.

Earlier, Co-ordinator of the group, Mr. Olusola Bobola and Secretary, Dr. Gbenga Daso, charged participants to see themselves as beacons of hope and agents of transformation in their communities. The duo noted that the era of absolute dependence on government is gone, adding that youths should position themselves as drivers of the emerging change in global developmental efforts.

The Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr. Seun Akindele, who gave the vote of thanks, appreciated the organisers for their support and cooperation.

Other speakers at the event called on the youth to rise up to the challenge of contributing their quota to the socio-economic development of their communities.

The event also witnessed cultural dance and display by members of staff and pupils of the school, as well as members of the group and other guests.
