Chief Kingsley Moghalu, presidential candidate of the Young People’s Party (YPP), says the endorsement of a particular candidate by Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo is in vain.

“We in the South East now know that our elders in Ohanaeze have been economical with the truth, they tell us what they want us to believe for reasons best known to them.

“This time around the youth in the region have decided to vote for candidates that appeal to them in terms of development plans for the country,” he said.

Moghalu said he has done much for Nigerians to deserve their votes in Feb. 23, poll.

  • My Presidency quest Nigerian, not Igbo, says Moghalu

Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, the Presidential Candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) on Friday said that he was contesting for the office of the President as a Nigerian and not as an Igbo man.

Moghalu, who was a former deputy governor of the CBN, said that Nigeria’s problem was not about tribes, but socio-economic problems that touched every part of the country.

The candidate, in a statement he made available to the News Agency of Nigeria  in Lagos, said that any creative limiting his presidential ambition to any tribe was the handwork of mischief makers.

“Almost a year since I started to engage Nigerians on my candidacy and vision for the country; I have held town hall meetings in nearly all the states in the country, with more still to be done.

“We all, as Nigerians, have the power to choose something new, something different that will redirect the country into an upward trend.

“Our politics has always been plagued by the scourges of tribalism, nepotism, and corruption, a colonial tool that the political class has exploited in order to divide and control us,” Moghalu said.

According to him, Nigerians cannot afford to keep thinking about whether a candidate is Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Efik, Ijaw or Ibibio.

He said that Nigeria needed competent and trustworthy leaders which had been the focus of his talks about his aspiration.

“It is time to put aside these differences and aim for something that unites us all, to deliver a country that works for every citizen,” he added.

  • YDP seeks de-registration of YPP

The Young Democratic Party (YDP) has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to void the registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Young Progressives Party (YPP), saying its name is similar to its own.

The suit, with YDP and its Acting National Secretary, Iliyasu Mohammed Makaye (as plaintiffs), has INEC, its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, YPP and it’s National Chairman, Bishop Emmanuel Amakiri as defendant.

The plaintiffs alleged that INEC breached Section 82(2)(a)(b)(c) of the 2010 Electoral Act (as amended) by registering YPP with “a similar acronym with YDP,  being an existing political party.”

They want the court to declare the registration of YPP by INEC as unlawful, void and of no legal effect for non-compliance with provisions of the 2010 Electoral Act as amended.

The plaintiffs urged the court to declare that the act of  registering YPP by the INEC and Yakubu was deliberate and aimed at frustrating their progress.

In a supporting affidavit deposed to by YDP’s National Deputy Organising Secretary South, Nwachi Francis Nnali, the plaintiffs stated that the 2nd defendant ( Amakiri) was once a National Youth leader under the umbrella of YDP and was suspended and subsequently expelled from the party for anti-party activities.

They accused INEC of conniving with Amakiri in registering YPP and alleged that INEC is aware that the 2nd defendant was expelled from YDP, because INEC was formally notified of the development.

INEC issues certificates to APDA, four others

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday presented certificates of registration to five newly-registered political parties in the country.

The parties are – Advanced People’s Democratic Alliance (APDA), Action Democratic Party (ADP), All Democratic People’s Movement (ADPM), New Generation Party of Nigeria (NGP) and the Young Progressive Party (YPP).

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, while presenting the certificates to the parties in Abuja, urged them not to consider their registration as an end in itself.

Yakubu said the registration should be seen as opportunity for the political parties to exercise their critical roles in the best interest of the nation’s democracy.

He said, “As you are aware, political parties are at the heart of our democracy. Under the Constitution, no Nigerian can contest an election conducted by lNEC unless he/she is sponsored by a political party.

“Similarly, under the Constitution, you are registered to operate as national political parties.

“As such, you should remain committed to the politics of principles and development of the entire nation as articulated in your party constitutions and manifestos which you submitted along with your applications for registration.

“You must eschew the politics of division, bitterness, mudslinging and hatred.

“You must also be inclusive in all your activities by giving opportunity to all citizens, especially disadvantaged groups such as women, youths and persons with disabilities.”

He assured that the new parties would enjoy equal rights and privileges of recognised political parties under the Constitution, the Electoral Act as well as INEC’s regulations and guidelines.
