  • Ganduje lauds FG over release of Zainab Aliyu

    Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has applauded the federal government for securing the release of Zainab Aliyu falsely accused of drug peddling in Saudi Arabia.

    A statement signed by Commissioner for Information, Youth and Culture, Malam Muhammad Garba , explained that by succeeding in establishing Aliyu’s innocence, the Nigerian government, through the NDLEA confirmed her as victim of a drug cartel at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.

    It said the Governor also welcomes confirmation by the Nigerian Mission in the Kingdom that the second Nigerian involved in the case will be released to the Nigerian Embassy in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

    The statement further commended the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice; Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister of Aviation, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora and the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia for the intervention.

    Ganduje stressed the needs for vigilance at the nation’s airport to protect Nigerians from falling prey to cartels that specialise in planting drugs in the bags of unsuspecting travelers.

  • Lagos lawmaker lauds FG over release of Zainab Aliyu

    A Lagos Lawmaker, Mr Segun Olulade, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for securing the release of Ms Zainab Aliyu, who was arrested by Saudi Arabian authorities for alleged possession of codeine.

    Olulade, a member representing Epe Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, also congratulated Zainab’s parents and applauded the Federal Government for the role it played in her release.

    The two-term lawmaker wondered why some individuals would have the guts and confidence to plant drugs in luggage belonging to other people.

    “If not for the swift intervention of the Federal Government and other well-meaning individuals, only God knows what the fate of Zainab and Ibrahim Abubakar would have been.

    “This calls for serious concern, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has a lot to do to ensuring that those responsible for this dastardly act are seriously dealt with.

    “Every other concerned security agency must rise up to the occasion and ensure that security at our airports is tightened.

    “I see no reason why drugs should scale through our security here at our airports and get to another country.

    “If the security agencies responsible for securing the airports are doing their jobs diligently, then people should not jet out of the country, only for them to get to their destinations and be caught,” the lawmaker said in a statement.

    Olulade, a former Chairman, House Committee on Health Services as well as Information and Strategy, also commended the Senior Special Assistant to the president on Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, for taking up the matter and ensuring the release of the two Nigerians.

    NAN recalls that Zainab Aliyu, a final year student of Yusuf Maitama-Sule University, Kano, was arrested in Saudi Arabia on Dec. 25, 2018, for alleged drug trafficking.

    She travelled to Saudi Arabia for lesser Hajj with her mother and elder sister.

  • Saudi releases Nigerian girl Zainab

    Zainab Aliyu, the Nigerian girl arrested in Saudi Arabia   for alleged drug trafficking, has been released by the Saudi authority, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mustapha Sulaiman, announced yesterday.

    She was released to the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia yesterday.

    The official also announced that Ibrahim Abubakar, who was arrested for drug-related crime will be released by the Saudi government.

    Zainab Aliyu, a student of Maitama Sule University, Kano, who travelled for Lesser Hajj in December 2018, was detained in the holy land for allegedly being in possession of banned substance.

    But, the permanent secretary, who was full of joy at a news conference, said that Abubakar would “be released to the mission in the in the next couple of hours.”

    Sulaiman posited that the ministry made great efforts to establish the innocence of the Nigerians.

    He said: “I am pleased to inform you that in the last few minute ago the girl and the gentleman have been released.

    “I am happy to announce to you that in the last couple of minute Zainab is with our mission in Saudi and we believe that the other gentle man would be released before tomorrow.

    “Because by the time they were able to get his file, it was a closing hour and before they get to his location where he is being kept, it was already late.”

    Sulaiman, said their release was as a result of intense diplomatic engagements between the Nigerian Government and Saudi Arabia.

    He also noted that government mounted lots of pressure for it to be able to secure their releases.

    He said: “We piled up pressure of interventions and there have been discussions at various levels between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Saudi authorities.

    “All available diplomatic channels to secure her release were used. In addition to that, our ministry in conjunction with the mission in Saudi has been able to bring to the attention of Saudi the level of innocence of these people.

    “We have engaged in other diplomatic ways, we have written several note verbal, we have also from here sent the same note to the Saudi embassy here and the consulate in Kano

    “We have several intervention and various discussions between the minister of minister of foreign affairs and attorney general of the federation on this same issue

    “We have passed documents relating to the trial of the suspects that were arrested in Kano we have also passed same information of the judicial process.”

    He further said that the news of her release was heart-warming to the Federal Government and members of her family.

    He said that investigations by the Nigerian authorities revealed that a drug cartel in Nigeria package drugs in her luggage, which led to arrest.

    Sulaiman added that the drug culprits had been arrested and will be prosecuted.

    President Muhammadu Buhari had on Monday directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, to intervene in the case of Nigerian student and others detained by Saudi Arabia Authority.

    The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, gave the hint in a statement by her Media Aide, Mr. Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

    The statement read: “President Muhammadu Buhari gave the directive immediately the matter was brought to his attention about two weeks ago.

    “My office has been working with the AGF as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in that regard,” she said.

    The Presidential aide assured that progress was being made in Zainab’s case along with two others held in similar circumstances in Saudi Arabia.

    “Zainab, although detained, had not been put on trial by the Saudi Arabia government.

    “And with the hard evidence that those who implicated her have been arrested, a strong legal case is being made to the Saudi authorities,” she said.

    Zainab’s father, Mr. Habib Aliyu, had appealed to the Federal Government to intervene in her daughter’s case and save the ‘innocent’ lady from being executed wrongly.

    He also called on the Saudi authorities and the international community as well as well-meaning individuals to intervene.

    Zainab’s father had expressed displeasure over his daughter’s arrest and detention in a Saudi Prison in spite of the recent discovery that she was framed by some drug cartel.

    He had explained that the allegations of Zainab entering the country with Tramadol was absolute falsehood as recent events and arrests had confirmed the girl’s innocence.

    Zainab had travelled from Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in company of her mother, Mrs Maryam Aliyu, and sister Hajara Aliyu.

    She was later arrested over allegations that a luggage, bearing her name tag, contained the unlawful substance.

    Zainab, who was accused of entering Saudi Arabia with an illegal dose of Tramadol was later discovered to be a victim of a cartel that specialised in keeping hard drugs in travellers’ bags.

    According to the statement, some members of the drug cartel, are already in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

  • Students protest in Kano over Zainab Aliyu

    Hours before she was released, hundreds of students of Maitama University, Kano on Tuesday protested the detention of their colleague, Zainab Aliyu by Saudi Arabia authorities over alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

     Aliyu, who was arrested and detained in Saudi Arabia on December 24, 2018 over a bag which allegedly contained hard drugs, was however released today.

    The students, who marched through state road to the Zaudi Consul General Office, carried various inscriptions and placards.

    Some of them read: “Zainab Habibu is innocent and “the drug was planted as confirmed by NDLEA” among others.

    But the Saudi Arabian Consul General in Kano refused to see the protesters despite several calls on him to come out of his office to address them.

    But he declined comment while the protesters turned down the offer of fellow Nigerians to talk to them on his behalf.

    Speaking on behalf of Kano Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the Secretary to the State Government Alhaji Usman Alhaji, urged them to be calm and law-abiding.

    “We expect you to back to school and continue with your studies as everything is being handled by the authorities concerned,” he stated.

    Their spokesman, Comrade Anan Mohammed, insisted Aliyu had no hand in the drug- related issue, claiming NDLEA had since uncovered the hidden motives and the perpetrators of the act

    He said six suspects were already apprehended after thorough investigation by the drug agency and they have since confessed to committing the crime.

    Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Development, Hajiya Surayya Sai Mama, affirmed the innocence of Aliyu.

  • Drug case: Buhari directs AGF to secure Zainab Aliyu’s release

     

    President Muhammadu Buhari, according to a statement from the office of the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa,  has directed the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mr. Abubakar Malami, to immediately intervene in the case.

    The statement issued in Abuja yesterday and signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, media aide to Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa  said the President gave the directive two weeks ago when the matter was brought to his attention.

    “President Muhammadu Buhari gave the directive immediately the matter was brought to his attention about two weeks ago.

    “My office has been working with the AGF as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in that regard,” Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa revealed.

    She also assured that progress was being made in Zainab case, along with two others in similar circumstances in Saudi Arabia.

    Mrs. Dabiri Erewa said Zainab, though detained, has not been put on trial by the Saudi Arabia government.

    She said with the evidence that those who implicated her have been arrested, a strong legal case is being made to the Saudi authorities.
