  • Excitement greets Buhari’s branded campaign wristbands

    The flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 presidential election, President Muhammadu Buhari, now has new
    campaign wristbands.

    The wristbands were shared at The Eagle Square, Abuja venue of the party’s recently held primaries thus highlighting an early start to
    his campaign.

    Excitement greeted the distribution of the branded wristbands, as 7,000 APC delegates gathered to endorse Buhari for a second term at the Square on Saturday October 6.

    The branded wristbands were distributed by Directors of the Good Governance Ambassadors of Nigeria (GOGAN) and the Buhari Unity Band (BUB) namely, Hajia Zainab Mohammed, Dr. Abayomi Oyekoya and Mr. Yinka Oladunjoye.

    A statememnt signed by the Director, Communication and Media, BUB, Dr. Kunle Hamilton, said printed leaflets titled “Ahead 2019 Presidential Election” were also distributed along with the Buhari wristbands.

    Billionaire business mogul Chief Felix Idiga is the Chairman and National Coordinator of GOGAN and BUB.

    The statement also said National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Secretary to the Federal Government, Boss Mustapha, were the first to wear the wristbands. Mustapha then distributed the bands to the hierarchy of the party.

    APC Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, wore the new wristband, which bears an arty image of Buhari and showed the president who also wore one with excitement.

    Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Governor Nasir El Rufai equally shared Buhari’s excitement.

    According to Chief Idiga, who has just picked up a House of Representatives ticket in the Imo State APC primaries, “We believe in the second term candidacy of President Buhari for his exemplary discipline, integrity and commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria.

    “GOGAN is committed to the same ideals and will continue to cooperate with our party leadership in ensuring strict implementation of our party manifesto.”

    The new wristband, which thousands of people at the APC presidential converge squabbled for, has the inscription, “Buhari for one more term; Nigerians’ 1st Choice” plus APC’s logo. The four versions of the wristband made available at the Eagle Square were in English, Yoruba, Ibo and Hausa.

  • Kaduna: Two mechanics face trial for alleged assault

    Two auto-mechanics, Aminu Isa and Mohammed Mustapha, on Wednesday, appeared before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Daura, Kaduna for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

    Isa, 20, and Ibrahim, 19, both of Ungwan Sanusi in Kaduna, are facing a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, possession of offensive weapons and causing harm.

    The prosecutor, Insp Felicia Samson, said on March 29 at about 2.00 p.m., a team of policemen on patrol, intercepted a group of youths called Sara Suka gang at Sabon Gari area of Ungwan Sarki in Kaduna.

    The prosecutor told the court that the accused persons, who were among the youth, were allegedly armed with knives and cutlasses before they were arrested.

    Samson said that during the arrest, Isa allegedly stabbed one of the police officers in the hand with a broken bottle.

    Samson noted that the offences contravened Sections 59, 67, 22 and 77 of the Penal Code, Laws of Kaduna State 2017.

    The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The magistrate, Mrs Zainab Mohammed, granted bail to the accused persons each in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in the like sum.

    Mohammed said the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and one of the sureties must be a biological parent of the defendants.

    Mohammed adjourned the case to May 10 for hearing.

    Football agent jailed one year for absconding with player’s N.9m

    A Daura Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna on Wednesday,  sentenced a 40-year-old football agent Olumide Otule, to one year imprisonment for absconding with a player’s N900,000.

    Magistrate Zainab Mohammed in her ruling, gave the convict an option to pay N50,000 fine.

    Mohammed also ordered Otule pay back the N900, 000, being the amount owed the complainant.

    Otule, a resident of No 7 Kofar Gamji Complex in Kaduna, was first arraigned on May 1, 2016 on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    The Prosecutor, Sunday Baba, told the court that Adebayo Owolabi of No DD5 Kabba Road in Kaduna wrote a letter of complaint to the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State on April 18, 2016.

    According to Baba, sometime in 2015, the accused approached the complainant on the pretext of securing a football club for him in the Republic of Philippines as a player.

    The prosecutor said the accused deceitfully collected the sum of N900, 000 from the complainant and told him to travel to Philippines where another agent will pick him up at the airport.

    “On reaching the Philippines airport, the complainant was left stranded without anybody to pick him at the airport neither was any club arranged for him.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    2018 budget goes to NASS this month – budget minister

    The Executive has concluded plans to submit the 2018 budget to the National Assembly before the end of this month.

    This disclosure was made by the minister of state for Budget and National Planning Hajia Zainab Mohammed at a press briefing to mark the end of the 23rd Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja on Thursday.

    Hajia Mohammed said the prepared 2018 budget will be presented to President Muhammadu Buhari shortly for the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval before the budget is finally transmitted to the National Assembly.

    “We are working closely with the legislature. We want to ensure the budget is passed in December so that it start to work from January 2018” she said.

    Zainab Mohammed who was silent on when the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) will be presented to the National Assembly said she was optimistic that the 2018 budget will passed in time to meet the January commencement of the fiscal year as planned.

    The MTEF is supposed to be submitted to the legislature months before the budget but with the minister’s revelation that the budget will be submitted this month, it is unclear if the budgeting process will not be thrown into another controversy.

    The MTEF is supposed to guide the legislators in passing the main budget and pointing them in the general direction of government’s fiscal activities for the coming three years.

    Speaking on the power sector tariff crisis, Zainab Mohammed stated that “it is clear no new investor will come without tidying the issue tariff adjustment. They insist the current tariff is not sustainable but the new tariff will be a joint agreement with all stakeholders.”

    The Federal Government she said: “will carry out another privatisation exercise for the power sector because what we sought to achieve by the previous privatisation has not been achieved. It has not worked well.”
    According to her, “government is still a shareholder in the current arrangement and so we want to call all existing stakeholders to the table and agree on way forward. We will agree on the level of shareholding and other issues so that this power issue can be addressed once and for all.”

    Power she said “is key to economic development and it is something the government is determined to ensure it works.”

    On private sector players’ worry that government heavy local borrowing has crippled banks’ ability to lend to them, the Minister said “the government will reduce local borrowing for private sector to get adequate credit to operate.”
    Regarding recommendations aggregated for the successful execution of the government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), she said: “We will review them and we have said the functional economic laboratories will be set up across the country in two weeks from now. We are not waiting for months. It is part of the recommendations.”An issue that generated a lot talk at the summit was the multitude of bills pending before the National Assembly which if passed will accelerate economic growth. Zainab Mohammed on her part said “there are pending bills and we always try to carry out economic impact on them. For instance, the Competition Bill has the capacity to create 381,000 jobs annually, generate revenue of N148.3 billion yearly. It will also lead to a 10 per cent reduction in price of goods.”

    “For the National Transportation Commission Bill, it will also boost job creation and government revenue”.

    Despite these positive outlook, the bills have been pending in both chambers of the National Assembly for years.

    Presidential committee to deliver 260 truck of grainsto IDPs in Adamawa

    The Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Distribution in North East is to deliver 260 trucks of assorted grains to the returnee IDPs in Adamawa.

    Hajia Zainab Mohammed, Minister for State, Budget and National Planning, made this known on Monday at a courtesy visit to Gov. Mohammed Bindow in Yola.

    Mohammed, who is the chairperson of the committee, said that 86 trucks had already been delivered to 3,000 people.

    The minister explained that the committee had conducted  census of the households in the affected area and was to deliver food items to 17,000 households in the state.

    She added that a total of 79,000 people were to benefit from the entire food distribution excercise in the state.

    She said that the distribution would ensure  respect to human dignity as the beneficiaries would get their food items at their door steps.

    According to the minister, the era of queueing for food distribution is over.

    Mohammed commended the governor for supporting the committee to carry out its mandate.

    In his remark, Bindow commended President Muhammadu Buhari for ensuring that insurgency was fought to standstill.

    Bindow also assured the committee of security in the state and advised them to ensure transparency and fairness in the distribution of the items.

  • Ritualists remove woman’s eyes

    A woman’s eyes were removed after gunmen attacked her on her way from a coronation ceremony in Lukshi village of Dass Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

    Police spokesman Haruna Mohammed said Zainab Mohammed was attacked and two of her eyes removed by three men inside a bush at Lukshi village while on her way home after attending a coronation at Gimbiyar Lukshi.

    He said police detectives attached to Dass Division visited the scene of the attack and rushed the victim to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital for treatment.

    Haruna said investigation was on and efforts being made to arrest the fleeing suspects.
