50,000 indigent persons receive N900m Zakat

Nasfat Agency for Zakat and Sadaqah (NAZAS) said it has disbursed N900 million Zakat and Sadaqat funds to 50,000 indigent persons since its inception in 2014.

NAZAS, however, distributed N174 million to beneficiaries for the year.

The humanitarian agency also celebrated maintaining an annual collection threshold above N100 million for the fourth consecutive year, despite a challenging economic environment.

The distribution highlighted NAZAS’ Annual General Meeting, where Board Chair, Prof Maruf Adelekan, detailed the organisation’s resilience and accomplishments.

He said 2024 was shaped by sustained implementation of fiscal and structural reforms, including removal of fuel subsidy and unification of the foreign exchange market.

The chairman noted that naira’s volatility, trading between N1,400 and N1,500 to the United States dollar, coupled with hike in fuel prices (N850–N900 per litre), contributed to a cost-of-living crisis, eroding purchasing power.

Despite these economic pressures, which often reduce charitable giving, Adelekan lauded the agency’s adaptability and resilience.

NAZAS General Manager, Mufutau Adelotan, said: “When we started in 2014, we were raised about N15.3 million. As of December 2024, we raised N189 million, and this year, we have raised over N200 million.

‘‘One of our key products is the Train-To-Fund Scheme, which enables us to train small and medium-scale enterprise owners and empower them with funds and tools to boost their businesses. We need more awareness to tell them that they need to pay their Zakat. There are benefits and consequences for not paying Zakat in Islam.”

He noted that funds are often insufficient to cater to growing applicants seeking relief for health, scholarships, and debt.

Senior Special Assistant to Lagos State governor on Wealth Creation and Employment, Saheed Tijani, assured NAZAS of government support, saying the agency’s work tallies with the aim and objective of the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment.

“What you are doing at NAZAS deserves commendation and support. I’m assuring you that the ministry will work with you to achieve more success,” he said.

No fewer than 150 Muslims have benefited from the N119 million Zakat distribution by The Companion (An Association of Muslim Men in Business and Professions).

Speaking at the 2025 distribution Ceremony,  the former Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Alhaji Zikrullah Hassan, who was the guest lecturer, stressed the societal impact of almsgiving, stating that it facilitates wealth distribution.

He urged the recipients to maximize the support provided for them, expressing optimism that they would grow to support others in return.

Alhaji Hassan said:  “Zakat helps to redistribute wealth and bring love among the muslims. I want to advise the wealthy ones to see this as a means of contributing to reduce the tension in the society and to those who are receiving, we are hoping you can return next year with testimonies of the impact and as donors.”

Chairman, Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, Senator Shuaib Salis, the ho chaired the event, commended the organisation for its structured and transparent system for collection and disbursement of the funds.

Senator Salis who noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, admonished the beneficiaries  to effectively utilize the support they were given.

Lagos District Amir of The Companion, Abdulkabeer Baruwa, explained that the selection process was meticulously designed to ensure that only truly deserving beneficiaries received the donations.

He explained that the Zakat foundation, formerly a subsidiary of The Companion, now operates independently with full administrative staffing.

Baruwa noted that the nationwide organisation recorded the highest amount of Zakat collections this year, with a target of 250 million set for 2026.

According to him, beneficiaries fall under various categories, including scholarships, business support, medical intervention, and empowerment.

“The Companion has just recorded the highest number of zakat donations so far. The percentage increase is very huge and it is a reflection of trust of the muslims out there. I can assure that next year will be in excess,” he said. “We have people who fall under scholarship, business support, medical intervention, and empowerment. Over 150 people are being supported today in Lagos alone. The Companion operates in six states, with distributions already concluded in other locations. Lagos is hosting the grand finale,” he added.

A recipient, Azeez Akinbode, recounted how the support enabled him to finish his PhD programme. He encouraged other beneficiaries to use the assistance judiciously and for its intended purpose.

Like other recipients of this year’s distribution, Toheeb Adeogun, who is currently a corps member commended the organization’s effort, asserting that the financial support will help scale up his business.

The former Chairman of National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Alhaji Zikrullah Hassan, has applauded the Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF) for transparency and integrity in the disbursement of zakat to less privileged Nigerians.

Alhaji Hassan spoke during the 20th edition of Zakat Distribution at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Ikeja, Lagos.

The event was the climax of the disbursement of N385,303,007 to over 2,897 beneficiaries across 27 states of the federation.

Among the beneficiaries are two christians.

Alhaji Hassan lauded the foundation for continuing to alleviate poverty in the country over two decades.

He said: “For the organisers, this is a very simple evidence of integrity because they are not just doing it but transparent about it. I believe that the organisers should be supported more and by the time we come here next year, they will be doing double of what they are doing to the benefit of the Muslims Ummah,” he said.

The former Hajj Boss advised the recipients to channel the materials given form the purpose it was given.

He said: “My main message for the beneficiaries is to remind them that it takes some people to do business and make money and from the proceed of their income, they are able to give zakat.

“They now have a duty to reposition their lives, particularly for those who are into business and when they do that, they will know that they are also meant to be contributing to the future of the zakat institution.

“They should not see what they benefit today as freebies, which they can sell. This is not a national cake but rather, an amanah (trust). They should utilize appropriately so that they too can become zakat payers in the nearest future,” he added.

Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of ZSF, Prince Sulyman Olagunju, said this year’s disbursement exercise began in June with the distribution of N30 million to 300 widows and indigent students.

Olagunju noted that there was 31 per cent increase in this year’s zakat disbursement over last year’s.

“To date, we have disbursed zakat across 27 states in the country to over 2,897 beneficiaries to the tune of N385,303,007 as against N294,680,412 disbursed last year to 3,624 beneficiaries respectively.

“Alhamdulilah, the figure increased by almost N100,000,000, which represents a 31 percent increment in zakat disbursement. The reduction in the number of beneficiaries was not unconnected with the adverse effect of inflation on the purchasing power of the naira,” he said.

According to him, Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation has disbursed over N3 billion of zakat alongside other charitable funds within the span of 20 years its operations.

The fund has been given to over 100,000 direct beneficiaries and over 1,000,000 indirect beneficiaries across 27 states of the federation, he added.

Chairman, Board of Directors of the foundation, Prof Tajudeen Yusuf, urged beneficiaries to judiciously used the materials given to them, assuring that the foundation would always support them in their needs to make them become self-reliant.

A beneficiary, Christiana Benson , a non-Muslim, thanked the foundation for extending humanitarian supports to her despite being a Christian.

She said: “I did not know there’s something like this and that Muslims can be this generous, giving out support to a Christian. They did not say because we are not Muslims, they accepted us with lots of love. God’s kindness will always show in everything the organisation does. God will always support the organisation and God will bring helper that will move this foundation to the best place God wants it to be.”

A visually-impaired beneficiary, Ahmad Adebowale Junaid, thanked the foundation for giving him a deep freezer, which he said will assist his business to grow.

He said: “I sell ice-blocks and drinks. One of the challenges I regularly encountered is poor electricity supply. If they are not cold, nobody will want to buy them. That’s why I applied and after going through screening, I was shortlisted.”

Your continuous payment of zakat and sadaqat for onward disbursement to the rightful beneficiaries has made the foundation a household name across the country.”

Rector of Yaba College of Education (YABATECH), Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, who chaired the occasion, applauded zakat payers, who have been consistent in paying zakat to ameliorate the suffering of the less privileged in society.

Zakat, he said, was not just a financial responsibility, rather It has a lot to do with moral and social responsibility.

“It’s having empathy for people around you and having a feeling about how to cater to the needs of the less privileged in society.

“That is why we appreciate our donors for their consistency. May Allah reward them abundantly. Apart from that, we also call on the elites in the society to identify the issue of observing their social responsibility, especially as regards the payment of zakat so that they can reduce poverty in the community,” he said.

The Rector enjoined the beneficiaries to have a mindset of emancipating themselves from poverty and start by giving sadaqah till they can reach the level of zakat payers.

Chairman of ZSF’s Board of Directors, Prof. Tajudeen Yusuf, lamented that the major economic reform Nigeria is passing through is having great effect on the rich and poor.

This, he said, puts more pressure on the committee during the screening of the applicants.

He appealed to applicants not shortlisted due to insufficient of funds not to lose hope.

“Our role as intermediary between zakat donors and beneficiaries is a very sensitive one and of trust. Some donors may suddenly shift their patronage from us due to pressures from other channels while applicants may not be happy with us for not acceding to all or none of their requests,” he said.

  • UNILAG Muslims to govt: eradicate poverty through Zakat

UNILAG Muslims to govt: eradicate poverty through Zakat

The University of Lagos Muslim Community Chairman Prof Kasali Adegoke has urged Federal and State governments to consider instituting Zakat in their bid to reduce poverty in the country.

Zakat, the third pillar of Islam, he said, could eradicate poverty if well harnessed.

Adegoke spoke at the Ramadan Lecture organised by the community at the Mosque hall, Akoka.

He appealed to wealthy Muslims not to jettison payment of Zakat, saying Zakat is also meant to bring about a peaceful co-existence between the lower and upper class.

He said: “Many Muslims who perform the first three pillars of Islam neglect or give less concern to the fourth pillar before they move to the fifth pillar – Hajj, which is contrary to how Allah has stipulated it. The religion has laid down the pillars systematically. The fifth pillar being the last has not been made compulsory. It is clearly stated that it should be done if one can afford it. The five pillars of Islam are fundamental. Therefore, one cannot jump to another without observing the one before. Observing Salat without paying Zakat is not fair, they should be interwoven. Many people ignore paying Zakat because they do not know its implication. It simply means that your money is not pure if you fail to pay your Zakat as a Muslim.

“If Zakat is well harnessed, it would turn the situation of things around in the country. The essence of Zakat is to take care of the need of the less privileged in order to enhance peace. Let every rich man pay Zakat, there will be peace. Also in Christianity, there is what they call Tithe which is likened to Zakat. If everybody pays it regularly and the money is well disbursed, things would change.

“If government can regulate religious activities in the country, Zakat foundation can be established for the Muslims while the Tithe payment can be established for the Christians. The population of the lower class would be minimal if government regulates them.

“It is surprising to know that 85 per cent of the wealth in this country is in the hands of the upper class while just 15 per cent of this wealth is what the less privileged are left with.”

Zakat foundation gives succor to indigents in Ibadan

No fewer than 39 people benefited from the proceeds of Zakat in Ibadan , Oyo State capital on Sunday as  Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF) staged the maiden edition of its Zakat Distribution Ceremony (ZDC) at the Government Secretariat, Agodi. TAJUDEEN ADE-BANJO and WASIU ADEYEMI report.

For AbdulSalam Hafeez, the joy of gaining admission into the University of Ibadan has been tempered by constant difficulty in sourcing funds to finance his undergraduate studies.

A student of Economics, Hafeez’s joy knew no bounds the day he received his letter of admission, but when he thought of how and where to raise the money for his education, his spirit went down. Hafeez is indigent.

Like him, Kasali Taiwo, is also facing his own financial challenge. A physically challenged person, Taiwo decided not to become a burden on the society, hence his decision to learn the art of shoe making. But as a cobbler, Taiwo is bereft of the needed tools to design and make shoes.

The same financial limitation also affects Mrs Sariyu Lasisi, a trader who could not meet up with her customers’ increasing demand.

Last Sunday, the burden of the trio and 36 others was reduced courtesy of Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation (ZSF).

Taiwo got a shoe-making machine, Mrs Lasisi went home with Deep Freezer while Hafeez received cheque.

The foundation is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization established in 2000 and incorporated by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

ZSF is inspired by Islamic faith to provide welfare and humanitarian services to the poor and needy Nigerians.

The House of Chiefs inside Governor’s Office, Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi in Ibadan North Local Government was filled to capacity.

Eminent Ibadan sons and daughters came in early for the foundation’s first Zakat Distribution Ceremony (ZDC).

Among them were Chairman, Oyo State Muslim Council Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sanni; The Nation columnist and Chairman, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) Media Committee Alhaji Femi Abbas; Alhaja Sekinat Tijani; Alhaji Isiaq Folorunsho; Alhaja Rahmatallah Olaegbe; Hajia Fasila Sulaiman and Hajia Fatimah AbdulWahab.

The sum of One million, three hundred and thirty-seven thousand one hundred and eighty naira (N1, 337,180) were disbursed to 39 beneficiaries. Out of this amount, economic empowerment for the beneficiaries took 65 per cent;  some of the beneficiaries went home with sewing machine, welding machine, vulcanizing machine, washing machine and various cash awards among others to support their initiatives to become entrepreneurs and self-reliant.

In his remarks, ZSF Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer Imam Abdullahi Shuaib described as historic the arrival of Zakat foundation in Oyo State.

“As some of you may be aware, we have organized similar ZDCs in Ebonyi, Anambra, Osun, Lagos, Abia, Bayelsa and Rivers States. Today, it is the turn of Oyo State for three reasons. First and foremost, we are here to identify with the less-privileged people of Oyo State who have suffered a lot of deprivations, marginalization and neglect; secondly, to bring the good news of Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation’s readiness to wipe off their tears and soothe their pains and thirdly; to empower some of them economically so that they can attain economic independence and become self-reliant,” he said.

Imam Shuaib said the foundation is committed to the welfare of the poor especially those living below $1US Dollar a day who are more than 63 percent of the over 160 million Nigerians that have been pauperized and traumatised by the mismanagement of the nation’s resources and bad leadership.

He said: “Against this background, ZSF therefore intervenes by utilising the windows of Zakat (compulsory Alms-giving) and Sadaqat (charity) Fund to accomplish its welfare and humanitarian services to Muslims and non-Muslims suffering from abject poverty in the midst of abundant resources.

“At ZSF, our commitments to the well-being of these Nigerians are driven by our passion to help add values to the life of the poor and needy people and to also complement the welfare service being rendered by government to its people.

It is our fervent believe that when individual avoid the culture of extravagance and wastefulness such as indulging in expensive Aso Ebi, organizing multi-million naira marriage, burial and house warming ceremonies while corporate citizens of Nigeria also demonstrate genuine concern about the plights of more than 113 million poor Nigerians and give helping hands to them by donating part of their profits for charity; then, we would be seen as fulfilling our socio-economic and spiritual responsibilities to our brothers and sisters as enjoined by Prophet Muhammad who said ‘Whosoever wakes up in a day and does not feel concerned about the welfare of his fellow brethren, he is not one of them.’ If we all exhibit this kind of positive attitude and disposition to the less-privileged, we have no doubt that it will go a long way to add value to their lives and our country.”

Imam Shuaib enjoined successful beneficiaries to make the best use of the opportunity at their disposal to be self-reliant in future.

Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah of Southwest Nigeria (MUSWEN) Prof Daud Noibi described Zakat as a veritable tool for socio-economic integration, unity and national development.

According to him, Zakat is likely to reduce jealousy and hatred towards the wealthy if well institutionalized.

“The various vices that stand in the way of unity and progress are likely to be reduced to the minimum if not totally eradicated. This is likely to be fostered by the reduction of greed on the part of the wealthy, as the joyful payment of Zakat on a regular basis reduces the inordinate love of wealth,” Prof Noibi said.

Former Oyo State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General Alhaji Adebayo Shittu praised the foundation for reviving the age-long prophetic tradition.

“What the foundation gave out today are not below what politicians give to empower the people despite lots of fund allocated to them but here is an NGO without allocation from either Federal, State or Local Government empowering the people in the real sense, this foundation deserved commendation and be supported,” he said.

The aim of Zakat, Shittu said, is to bring about practical redistribution of wealth.

“During the time of Prophet Muhammad, poverty was eradicated through the instrumentality of Zakat. If we can replicate the same thing in Nigeria, we can also eliminate poverty in our country,” he said.

A senior lecturer at the department of Education Foundation and Counseling , Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Dr Monsurat Musa described the foundation’s gesture as worthwhile.

Dr Musa who is the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN) Public Relations Officers (PRO) said vices in the society will be reduced if the welfare of the populace is properly addressed.

Taiwo thanked the foundation for the giving him hope to live a normal life, devoid of begging.

“If more of people like me receive this kind of gesture, street begging will maximally reduced,” he said.

Hafeez, a student of Economics said he can now concentrate on his studies without fear of funding.
