  • AFCON qualification: Ebonyi soccer fans hail Amuneke’s Tanzanian feat

Soccer fans in Ebonyi are celebrating the Taifa Stars of Tanzania’s qualification for the 2019 AFCON with former Super Eagles winger, Emmanuel Amuneke as its helmsman.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the former Zamalek of Egypt winger’s team defeated Uganda 3-0 on Sunday to qualify for the competition, incidentally being staged in June by Egypt where he plied his trade as a player.

The qualification was also historic because it was the country’s first AFCON appearance since the 1980 edition which was incidentally staged by Amuneke’s home country, Nigeria.

Desmond Ome, Ebonyi Football Association (FA) Secretary, congratulated Amuneke and Nigerians for the feat, noting that it was achieved through dint of hard work.

“The victory was achieved because the players, officials and the Tanzanian FA members keyed-into Amuneke’s hard work mantra.

“He made it clear from the onset that the AFCON qualification was his target and sought the collaboration of relevant stakeholders to achieve the feat,” he said.

Ejike Egbo, Colombian FC of Abakaliki striker, said that Amuneke had an illustrious playing career and is excelling as a coach.

“Amuneke was an AFCON winner, an Olympic Games gold medalist, played for the great Barcelona FC of Spain and became the fifth coach to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup for Nigeria in 2015.

“The Tanzanian FA should be commended for reposing confidence in him with the required support as this should serve as a lesson to other soccer federations,” he said.

Chief Joseph Igboke, a Timber Merchant, said that Amuneke’s feat showed that no matter how much they are despised, Nigerian coaches are full of potential.

“Nigeria’s five triumphs in the FIFA U-17 World Cup, two silver medals in the U-20 category among others were achieved by local coaches who are still sought after around the world.

“The late Stephen Keshi led lowly-rated Togo to its first World Cup in 2006 and Amuneke’s feat shows that with equal opportunities like their white counterparts, Nigerian coaches are always successful,” he said.

Mrs Rose Okoro, a teacher and football enthusiast, urged Nigerians to pray for Amuneke to lead the team creditably in the AFCON, this June.

“Many of such historic feats have been eclipsed by shambolic performances at the main tournament and this makes the world forget the qualification feat.

“The Tanzanian team should prepare adequately for the competition because it would be stiffer than the qualifiers,” she said.

Fans chide soccer authorities over clubs ouster from CAF

Football fans in Abakaliki have chided Nigerian soccer authorities over the ouster of its clubs in all categories of the African Football Confederation (CAF) competitions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Enugu Rangers International beat Zamalek of Egypt 2-1 in Enugu on Sunday in the CAF Champions League round of 32 clash but lost 3-5 on aggregate after a 1-4 first leg loss.

Rivers United also lost 0-4 on Saturday to El-Merriekh of Sudan and lost 3-4 on aggregate after winning 3-0 in the first leg in Port Harcourt.

The fans who spoke to NAN on Monday in Abakaliki described the situation as appalling, noting that both teams’ subsequent qualification to vie in the Confederation Cup was not enough consolation.

Dickson Ojeh, Team Manager of National Amateur League Side, Alter Nite FC of Abakaliki, said that the soccer authorities and clubs did not understand the politics involved in such competitions.

“El Merriekh frustrated Rivers United with their fans pelting our players with stones, while Rangers were not allowed to record the proceedings of their first leg game in Cairo.

“In a sharp contrast, Rivers United gave El-Merriekh a queens treatment in Port Harcourt, while Zamalek officials were flaunting their television relay rights in Enugu and moving freely as if they were in Cairo,’’ he said.

Supporting this assertion, Chika Nwangele, Ebonyi United FC skipper, said that El-Merriekh and Zamalek had the full support of their nation’s soccer officials when prosecuting their matches.

“How many Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) officials were involved in prosecuting both matches in Nigeria or accompanying the teams to Ombdurman and Cairo?

“Zamalek and El-Merriekh players were visibly more motivated than their Nigerian counterparts who grapple with allowances and bonuses whenever they want to travel,’’ he said.

Chief Okechukwu Nshii, former Head of Sports Department in Abakaliki Local Government Council, blamed the development on fatigue occasioned by a congested domestic schedule.

“It is sheer madness for the Nigerian Professional League Board to organise matches during mid-week as top football nations in the world don’t practice such.

“Clubs play as much as two matches in a congested week and this also affected Ifeanyi Ubah and Wikki Tourists FC who were eliminated in the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup,’’ he said.

Mrs Peace Okenwa, a don and soccer buff, called on soccer authorities to consult former Abia Governor, Chief Orji Uzor-Kalu, for tips on his magic wand for Enyimba in 2003 and 2004.

“Uzor-Kalu as a soccer strategist has the key of repeating Enyimba’s back to back winning success as Nigerian clubs have been groping in the dark since then.

“CAF should also look-into the complaints lodged by Rangers and Rivers United against their opponents and treat them on merit because football no matter how keenly contested, should not be war,’’ she said.

CAF Champions League: Rangers beat Zamalek 2-1, crash out

Nigeria Professional Football League champions (NPFL) Enugu Rangers have been dumped out of the CAF Champions League despite beating Egyptian side Zamalek 2-1.

The Nigerian side lost the first leg 1-4 in Egypt and immediately set out to cancel the deficit by taking the lead in the game courtesy of a goal from Tope Olusesi few minutes from the half time break.

Zamalek equalised in the second half through substitute striker Bassem Morsi in the 71st minute to restore their goal advantage leaving the Nigerians with a mountain to climb, as they needed to score four goals to progress to the next round.

Godwin Aguda restored Enugu Rangers’ lead via the spot but the 2-1 win was not enough for them to progress to the next round, which is the group stage.

Just like Rivers United, Rangers will now drop to the CAF Confederations Cup where they will be hoping to make atonement for their poor showing in the CAF Champions League.

CAF move Zamalek vs Enyimba to Monday

THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) have confirmed that a CAF Champions League Group B tie between Zamalek and Enyimba will now be played on Monday.

Enyimba protested against a sudden shift of the match from Sunday to Saturday, saying they do not have enough players in Egypt to honour the game as five of their players were on their way to Egypt from a playing tour of Spain.

Enyimba need to win this match to stay in contention of qualification for the semifinals of the competition as they are without any points after two rounds of matches.

Zamalek have three points, while Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa have already won the three-team group with nine points from three matches.

Enyimba lose at home to Zamalek

Visiting Egyptian giants, Zamalek yesterday pipped Enyimba 1-0  in a CAF Champions League Group B match played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa now top the group with three points following their 2-0 win at Algeria’s Entente Setif on Saturday.

Bassem Morsy headed Zamalek in front in the seventh minute, when his effort lobbed over goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai.

The waterlogged pitch caused by the heavy rain in Port Harcourt virtually made it impossible for both teams to string passes on the pitch for a large part of this encounter.

Kester Kelly forced a save from Zamalek goalkeeper, Ahmed El-Shennawy after 21 minutes.

Enyimba continued to press for an equaliser and in the 37th minute Ahmed Tawfik made a timely clearance to keep the Nigeria champions at bay.

Joseph Osadiaye’s  free kick in additional time missed the target narrowly as both teams retired to the changing rooms with the Egyptians holding on to their lead.

In the second half, Enyimba pressed even more in search of the equaliser, while Zamalek relied on quick breakaways to destalibise their hosts.

New signing Ifeanyi Onuigbo was denied by a timely block inside the box on 54 minutes.

Sundowns host Enyimba on June 29 in continuation of the competition.

  • Zamalek drop skipper

Zamalek have left out injury-hit skipper Mahmoud Shikabala, but named Nigeria’s Moruf Youssef and Zambia forward Emmanuel Mayuka on a 19–man squad for Sunday’s CAF Champions League Group B tie at Enyimba.

Playmaker Ayman Hefny has also been left because of injury.

Nigerian Moruf Youssef is also on the squad to Port Harcourt as are several Egypt internationals including goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawy and Hamada Tolba.

The Egyptian champions will be counting on former Southampton striker Mayuka for goals in Nigeria against Enyimba.

The Champions League group game will be played on Sunday and kick-off time is 4pm local time.

    Ahly battle Zamalek for Ohawuchi

The bitter rivalry between Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek has shown up in the impending transfer of Nigeria striker Stanley Ohawuchi as it appears now to be a straight fight between the Cairo clubs.

Wadi Degla, who bought the former Bayelsa United and Heartland striker for a meager $70,000, have put a price tag of $2 million on him now.

It is now believed that double Egyptian champions Zamalek have tabled $1.8 million, while Ahly, who are also keen to sign the ex-Nigeria U20 star Ohawuchi, are expected to make their offer shortly.

Ohawuchi, who previously featured for Sliema Wanderer in Malta, is the leading scorer in the Egyptian premier league with six goals from five matches.

His contract with Wadi Degla has a year left and the Cairo club have moved quickly to extend it while proposing to double his salary.

His exploits in Egypt have also sparked off interest in the Gulf.
